If clean Nigerians shun politics, dirty ones will make laws – Prof. Oba

Emeritus Prof. Shuaib Oba, Kwara’s New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) governorship candidate, says politics should not be seen as a dirty game left to politicians alone if Nigeria is to be fully developed.

Oba, who spoke on Wednesday, urged Nigerians, especially the youths, to be actively involved in party politics.

“Saying politics is a dirty game is wrong. Politics should be for the clean people as well, for us to reach the promised land,” the former Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin said.

Oba said that clean people should not leave politics for the dirty people.
He said, instead, they should be involved through active participation so as contribute to cleaning the Augean stable.

“If all clean people leave politics to dirty people, we will have a dirty nation of dirty people who will make dirty laws that will be obeyed by good people, whether they like it or not.

“So, if you are going to be a victim in that case, it’s only appropriate that good people should also take an interest.

“Politics is too serious to be left to politicians alone. If people of goodwill attempt damage control, people will appreciate it,” the NNPP governorship candidate said.

On why he joined NNPP to actualise his Kwara governorship ambition, Oba said it is because, among other things, the party is devoid of corrupt leaders and members.

“I joined NNPP because it has people who have a clean bill of health against corruption.
“Our presidential candidate, Dr Rabiu Kwankwaso is one of those who have not been chased around by anti-corruption agencies in the country,” he said.

Oba said part of The Strategic Action for Change in Kwara (SACK) programme is zero tolerance for corruption and, in the process, inspires good governance.

He asserted that zero tolerance for corruption is achievable through value re-orientation and sensitisation of the public service, including strategic and innovative investments of workers’ pensions to assure geometric bumper return on investment that safeguards their future.

Oba said another way was showing good leadership by example, whereby the leader would make it clear through his actions that he would not tolerate corruption.

“Waste reduction and elimination, as well as getting value for money, will go a long way in eradicating corrupt practices.

“Moreover, probity, the sanctity of property rights and good governance will inspire private sector confidence.
“These will also reduce transactional costs and attract excellent symbiotic public-private partnership investment that will unlock unparalleled socio-economic inclusive growth for Kwarans,” he said.

According to Oba, good governance is relatively inexpensive.
“Still, bad governance is destructive and has catastrophic intergenerational ramifications if not stemmed,” he said.
Oba promised that he would entrench good governance from the onset once he is sworn in as the next governor of Kwara.

“So, Atiku should first apologies to Nigerians for the way and manner they expended N16 million dollars for power holding and yet we don’t have 24 hours power supply.

“Atiku should explain to us the maladministration of the privatisation exercise they embarked on which of course cumulated into insecurity and the prospect of Nigerian economy today was a result of the exercise by the PDP which was chaired by Atiku Abubakar,” he said.

The Senator however, called on Nigerians to support the presidential candidate of the All Progress Congress (APC) Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and Kashim Shettima adding that they were both men with great antecedents.

“What Nigeria needs now is a man with great vision so that our foreign reserve will be enhanced, so that we will enjoy security of lives and property and the country’s economy will move to a higher level,” he said.

He described Tinubu and Shettima as a great combination from rich background and not coming to steal from Nigerians but to make the country regain its lost glory.

Ezekwesili laments over level of decay in Nigeria

Ahead of the 2023 general elections, a former Minister of Education, Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, has advised Nigerians not to expect immediate results from whoever emerges as the next president of the country following the “level of decay” in the system.

She urged the presidential candidates to tell Nigerians the truth about the state of the nation, instead of promising immediate results.

Ezekwesili, who spoke as a guest on Channels Television’s Political Paradigm, said regardless of who emerges president next year, immediate results may not be achieved in four years, because of the level of decay in the system.

In her words: “Candidates who are running for elections must tell electorates the bitter truth. The bitter truth is that the country is not in a place for any President to immediately deliver results.

“What matters is that you have a President who understands the problems that need to be solved and has an idea of how to go about solving it.

“Any candidate who is promising instant results after the 2023 elections is not being fair to you. So it is important that we understand that citizens must be ready for the work ahead because it is going to require everybody working together to make this happen.”

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that the 2023 general elections would kick off with the presidential and National Assembly polls on February 25.

Be hopeful, God has not forsaken Nigeria – CAN President

Archbishop Daniel Okoh, President, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has urged Nigerians not to lose hope due to challenges,  stating that God has not forsaken the nation.

The CAN president noted that the story of Christmas depicted God’s intervention in hapless situations that afflicted mankind, therefore, as a people,  we should not lose hope.

In a Christmas message on Saturday in Lagos, Okoh said the mystery of the birth of Jesus Christ as a Messiah came in handy now that the nation is on the verge of transition to new leadership that would pacify the people from anxieties.

According to him, the 2022  Christmas celebration amidst uncertainty in the face of challenges,  can be likened to the sufferings of the Israelites as a result of the disobedience of their leaders to forsake God because of material things.

“God will always save us through our Lord Jesus Christ.

“The message of Christmas is of peace and oneness. It is to express love to our neighbours regardless of their religion, ethnicity or political leanings.

“Our political leaders especially those jostling to lead the country, should use the season to reflect on the good ways of Jesus Christ to give them directives when they assume office.”

The CAN president appealed to Nigerians not to allow the fear of insecurity in the land to hinder them from coming out enmass during the forthcoming general elections to vote for credible candidates of their choice.

He prayed for God’s protection of all Nigerians.
