Stop politicising insecurity- Kwankwaso cautions Nigerians

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State, Iliyasu Kwankwaso, has cautioned Nigerians to stop politicising security issues.

Kwankwaso noted that the politicisation of security matters was hindering smooth progress in the fight against insecurity by the federal government.

He gave the advice while addressing newsmen in Kano, commending the efforts of the ministry of Defense in supporting the military relocation to Sokoto.

He expressed sadness over how some “political jobbers” engaged in causing rift between the former Zamfara Governor Bello Matawalle and the member representing Birnin Magaji/Kauran Namoda Federal Constituency, Aminu Sani Jaji.

The APC chieftain also praised the efforts of Matawalle announcing a reward of N20 million to whosoever gives fruitful information that will lead to the arrest of the bandits.

He said: “Initially, people were condemning the defense ministry for inaction, and now that steps have been taken for the fight against the terrorists, the same people are condemning the ministry. This is very hypocritical.

“Those engaging in this act are beneficiaries of the terrorism that is killing our people out there, that is why they have turned the matter into politics.”

Kwankwaso queried: “People are being killed by these terrorists, and the situation had gone bad, now that the ministry has taken steps towards dealing with the situation, to the extent that about 80 terrorists were killed yesterday, why would any right thinking person come out to condemn the action?

“I want to call on our people to please join hands together and support the efforts of the government in this fight against terrorism put in place by President Bola Tinubu.

“We should support the efforts of the defense ministry as well as the military to achieve the needful,” he appealed.

He further averred that those criticising the federal government’s giant steps in the area of security were only interested in blackmailing the president, with political interest in 2027, which he noted, is not in the interest of the nation.

He also called on northerners to desist from the act of attacking themselves needlessly, as, according to him, that was hindering development in the region.

  • It’s difficult to defend Tinubu’s govt’, Nigerians react to Ajuri’s leave of absence

It’s difficult to defend Tinubu’s govt’, Nigerians react to Ajuri’s leave of absence

Following the announcement of the Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Media & Publicity, Chief Ajuri Ngelale, to embark on an indefinite leave of absence, some Nigerians have taken to the social media platforms to share their thoughts.

Ajuri, in a statement on his Facebook page on Saturday, said he had informed the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, of his intention to proceed on an indefinite leave of absence, citing health matters involving his nuclear family.

Reacting to the development on X, formerly Twitter, Senator Shehu Sani @ShehuSani wrote: “Ajuri can now rest well, sleep well, eat well, switch off his phone and even add some weight.”

FEJIRO @realFejiro: “It’s no surprise to hear that Ajuri Ngelale has resigned. Do you realize how difficult it is to defend someone like Tinubu? You would have to abandon all sense of integrity and logic to do so. You’d end up calling black white and white black. Best of luck to Ajuri Ngelale!”

Ifeanyi Ejechi @ifeanyi_ej53035: “What kind of semantics is “indefinite leave of absence*’? Okay! I can now understand. It means Ajuri Ngelale was gently shown the door, without necessarily being pushed out.”

Adamu Ibrahim Aliyu @hrh_aia: “I have a lot of respect for Ajuri, because he has proven to be one of the spokespersons that have regards for the citizens. Very careful with his choice of words when addressing the citizens. I wish him the best in his future endeavours.”

Mazi Ifeanyi Nweze said: “His conscience no allow him to continue defending obvious failure of a president. He wants to exonerate himself from the mess they call governance in Nigeria. Good of him, he can still regain his image and dignity.”

Okpueze Emerueh: “Kudos to him. He has a conscience. It’s very difficult to defend a clueless government. Let the Lagos boys take over as usual.”

Muhammad Gaddafi Rabiu: “The biggest PR has resigned. He may be tired too for incompetencies. May his former principal be next to resign.”

  • JAPA: British Home Office to scrap Biometric Residence Card for Nigerians

JAPA: British Home Office to scrap Biometric Residence Card for Nigerians

Nigerians living in the UK will no longer receive biometric residence cards (BRCs) or biometric residence permits (BRP) as from December 31, 2024 as the Home office is replacing them with a new online e-Visa system.

According to the Central Association of Nigerians in the United Kingdom (CANUK), part of the UK government’s programme to replace all physical migration documents with digital versions, the eVisa, has been aggressively promoted throughout 2024 and by the end of the year, such physical documents will replace the current hard copy visa regime altogether.

CANUK noted that it means Nigerians who have BRCs and BRPs will no longer need them as they will now get a digital version, “which saves them from having to carry any physical documentation around”.

eVisa is an online record of your immigration status and the conditions of your permission to enter or stay in the UK.

CANUK Publicity Secretary, Rose Graham and Assistant Publicity Secretary, Mohammed Yiosese in a statement on Sunday, said, “Nigerians affected by the change will need to create a UKVI account to be able to access their eVisa.

“At a meeting with the Nigerian community leaders yesterday, Home Office officials stressed that updating a physical document to an eVisa does not affect the immigration status or the condition of anybody’s permission to enter or stay in the UK.

“During a four-hour meeting with representatives from the Central Association of Nigerians in the UK (Canuk), the Nigeria in Diaspora Organisation (Nido) and high commission officials at the Home Office, a presentation was made on the new regime.”

CANUK quoted the Home Office as saying, ‘In the future, you’ll be able to use an eVisa to travel to the UK. You will not need to carry a physical document, except for your current passport, which must be registered to your UKVI account. Until the end of 2024, you will need to continue to carry your physical document when you travel, if you have one.

‘All BRP holders should visit www.gov.uk/evisa now to create a UKVI account to access their eVisa. Holders of other physical immigration documents, including passports containing vignette stickers or ink stamps and BRCs, can also find information there on what they need to do to create a UKVI account to access their eVisa

‘Once you have created your UKVI account you will be able to view the details of your eVisa online, for example your type of permission, when it expires and your conditions of stay in the UK. Your eVisa will be linked to your passport in your UKVI account.

‘You must keep your passport or ID card details up to date in your UKVI account and tell us about any changes so that your immigration status can be easily identified at the UK border. You’ll still need to carry your current passport with you.’

It noted that at the meeting, Home Office officials pointed out that eVisas will remain valid even when passports expire, and new ones have been applied for.

CANUK was formed by the Nigeria High Commission in the UK in 2005 in recognition of a need to unite the various Nigerian groups under one umbrella organisation to ensure that the welfare, views, and community interests of Nigerians in the foreign country are represented in a harmonious and organised manner.

BREAKING: NLC Orders Nigerian workers to embark on Nationwide procession

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has directed all its affiliates nationwide to embark on a peaceful prayer procession on Aug. 29.

Mr Emmanuel Ugboaja, General Secretary of NLC, revealed this in a letter addressed to all affiliates and state councils on Wednesday in Abuja.

The letter is titled, “Mobilisation for Peaceful Procession and Prayer Session in Solidarity”.

Recall that the Police had invited Joe Ajaero, NLC president for interrogation on charges related to alleged “criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion and cybercrime”

Ugboaja said that the procession is in response to the recent invitation by the Police to Ajaero, to appear for interrogation on trumped-up charges in Aug.

“We call on all NLC affiliates and state councils to mobilise their members in Abuja and across the states to show solidarity.

“All Central Working Committee members resident in Abuja and other members, are expected to assemble at the National Headquarters of the NLC by 8:00 am on Aug. 29.

“This is to accompany the President to the Police for the scheduled interaction,”he said.

He said that those in the state capitals should gather at their respective state secretariats of Congress.

Ugboaja urged them to embark on a peaceful procession to their State Police Headquarters, where they will hold a prayer session until the President’s interaction with the Police is concluded.

“This peaceful march is a united stand against the unjust actions aimed at intimidating our leadership and stifling the voice of Nigerian workers.

“We urge all members to remain peaceful and orderly throughout the procession and prayer session.

“ If for any reason, the President is detained; all workers nationwide shall proceed on indefinite strike.

“Your unwavering support and solidarity at this critical time are crucial to defending Civic rights and the integrity and rights of the labour movement.

“Together, we shall overcome these challenges and continue to uphold justice, fairness, and democracy in our dear nation,” he said.

  • NAFDAC speaks on recent call for Nigerians to avoid eating bread

NAFDAC speaks on recent call for Nigerians to avoid eating bread

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has distanced itself from recent claims urging Nigerians to avoid eating bread due to safety concerns.

The agency addressed the issue following a statement made by Roseline Ajayi, NAFDAC’s South-West Coordinator, which was reportedly misinterpreted in the media.

Ajayi had initially commented on the use of saccharine in bread production, noting that some producers were resorting to the substance due to the high cost of sugar.

“We are not unmindful of the prevailing economic challenges, but the agency will not compromise its standards. It is pertinent to note that the quality and safety of regulated products cannot be compromised,” Ajayi stated.

However, after Ajayi’s remarks, a reporter released a video suggesting that Nigerians should completely avoid consuming bread, a claim that quickly gained traction online.

In response, NAFDAC Director-General, Mojisola Adeyeye, issued a statement on Tuesday clarifying the agency’s position.

“At no time during that engagement with stakeholders did NAFDAC suggest that Nigerians should avoid bread baked and sold in Nigeria,” Adeyeye said.

She emphasized that the content of the video does not accurately reflect the agency’s observations.

“NAFDAC dissociates herself from the comment of the reporter in the circulating video about avoiding bread in Nigeria. This is the personal statement of the reporter who does not speak for the Agency. NAFDAC wishes to reassure the public that the Agency remains fully alive to her responsibilities of safeguarding the health of the public,” Adeyeye added.

The agency also cautioned bakers against using unapproved food additives, specifically highlighting the illegality of using saccharine in bread production.

“Any baker found to be using unapproved food additives, in this case, saccharine, is appropriately sanctioned in line with the extant regulatory provisions,” the statement noted.

NAFDAC reiterated that the Nigerian Industrial Standard (NIS) and the Codex General Standard for Food Additives (GSFA) do not permit the use of saccharine in bread.

  • Corruption in Tax Administration: Nigerians urge govt to leverage technology

Corruption in Tax Administration: Nigerians urge govt to leverage technology

To curb corruption and arbitrariness in tax administration, governments at all levels have been urged to leverage technology and desist from using touts in collecting revenue.

The call for federal, state, and local government to address the problem of tax fraud and other forms of irregularities was made by participants during an anti-corruption radio program, PUBLIC CONSCIENCE, produced by the Progressive Impact Organization for Community Development, PRIMORG, Wednesday in Abuja.

It follows separate investigative reports published by the International Center for Investigative Reporting (ICIR) on how millions of naira generated from cattle taxes in Kano State end up in private pockets.

It was also reported that residents of Ardo Kola and Gassol Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Taraba State continue groaning under ‘excess taxation and corruption.

Speaking during the radio programme, financial analyst Agaba Wilson Agaba cautioned that tax administration in Nigeria will remain ineffective and laden with corruption if authorities continue using touts popularly called ‘agberos’ to collect revenues rather than deploy technology.

Agaba noted that arbitrary taxes at the local government level have become a norm over the years, lamenting that the situation is killing the economy of several communities.

He knocked state governments, allowing the corruption in tax administration to fester. At the same time, citizens bear the brunt, blaming state governors for deliberately allowing non-state actors to collect arbitrary taxes as political patronage.

“Touts or ‘agberos’ collecting tax should be abolished. Let us legislate so that these kinds of activities are removed. We shouldn’t have non-state actors collecting taxes on behalf of the government in days when we have technology that can do that.

“People in the LGAs should have their IT departments to monitor these kinds of software, and these revenues can be collected. There should be accredited agent bankers within the markets, just like POS operators, to collect the taxes and issue receipts, and then you can do your checks and balances and give them a small commission.

“What you see in many states is that since the governors loot the local government funds, they leave the people at the grassroots to find other means to fund themselves – our democracy is highly corrupted.

“The reasons these things happen are political, and once you leave these kinds of things to non-state actors, they are bound to do whatever they deem fit,’ he warned.

Agaba called on citizens to demand accountability from leaders that are superintending over their taxes while applauding PRIMORG for educating Nigerians on their rights and responsibilities vis-à-vis tax administration.

“What your organization (PRIMORG) is doing today is commendable – creating awareness and public awareness. I call on more NGOs and organizations to go out there and do more of these kinds of enlightenment,” Agaba stated.

On his part, a member of the Ardo Kola LGA, Taraba State, Pius Naphtali, corroborated ICIR’s investigative report and lamented that residents and business owners in the community are facing excessive taxation, alleging that 50 percent of the taxes are diverted.

Naphtali stated that not all tax payments are given receipt for, adding that the ripping off of residents and business owners through arbitrary taxes was happening across the state.

He urged the government to look into the problem as the people are running out of patience and beginning to resist paying indiscriminate taxes to touts working for the local council.

“It’s quite endemic and something that needs to be looked into for a change. If Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) have to be encouraged, multiple taxations need to be dealt with, the reason being that local government authorities come up with various means of taxation without checking how much the business owner is earning. They just give a fixed amount in tax without trying to match the corresponding income.

Asked to justify the allegation that the local government tax collectors are diverting revenues into their pockets, Naphtali said, “It has often been observed that people that pay tax are given receipts, but sometimes, the receipt is foul. A situation where people who pay more than N5,000 are given receipts and people who pay less are not given receipts; instead, their names are written in a tax book.

“It got me wondering where the funds go because I believe it goes into individual pockets. Fifty percent doesn’t get into the government coffers. It’s something that needs to be brought to a stop, “Naphtali said.

Earlier, Investigative Journalist Shamsiyya Hamza Sulaiman called on the Kano state government to take a close look at the investigation and stop arbitrary taxes slammed on cattle businesses in the state.

Sulaiman explained how millions of naira generated from cattle tax are diverted and do not get to the government coffers, saying that cattle markets at Wudil, Dambatta, and Bichi generate at least N120,000,000 each. Still, the state government gets nothing from them.

She revealed that each market receives no fewer than 5,000 heads of cattle each week at N500 per head. Additionally, cattle traders are sad over the multiple taxation and do not get a receipt every time they pay.

“Kano State government is aware of this investigation, but they said they are unaware of arbitrary tax at the cattle markets. Local government authorities are not interested in the accountability of the taxes collected.

“No law indicates that cattle tax should be collected in Kano State. There used to be a rule 50 years back, but it’s been ruled out.

“The traders said that they don’t see the use for the taxes, they are not comfortable, and that they are forced to pay. Sometimes, they don’t get to make sales, yet they pay taxes on each cattle. Still, the market union said they use the tax to pay for the refuse bin, the cleaning and tidying of the market square, security, road repairs, electricity bills and water supply,” Sulaiman stated.

Public Conscience is a syndicated weekly anti-corruption radio program PRIMORG uses to draw government and citizens’ attention to corruption and integrity issues in Nigeria.

The program has the support of the MacArthur Foundation.

  • I understand your pains -Tinubu tells  Nigerian

I understand your pains -Tinubu tells  Nigerian

President Bola Tinubu has appealed to Nigerians to be patient with his administration, assuring that the country is about to enter a new dawn.

Tinubu made this appeal on Wednesday, acknowledging the hardship Nigerians are going through as a result of fuel subsidy removal.

In an official video released by the State House, Tinubu acknowledged the ongoing hardships orchestrated by the removal of the fuel subsidy and the floating of the naira.

“Fellow Nigerians, this period may be hard on us and there’s no doubt that it is tough on us but I urge you all to look beyond the present temporary pains and aim at the larger picture. All our good and helpful plans are in the works. More importantly, I know that they will work. Sadly, there was an avoidable lag between subsidy removal and these plans coming fully online,” he said.

The president assured that the measures his government has taken would get the country out of the lingering economic crisis, urging Nigerians to have faith in his administration.

“I plead with you, please, have faith in our ability to deliver and in our concern for your well-being. We will get out of this turbulence and due to the measures, we have taken, Nigeria will be better equipped and able to take advantage of the future that awaits her.

“For example, we shall fulfil our promise to make education more affordable to all and provide loans to higher education students who may need them. No Nigerian students will have to abandon the higher education system because of lack of money.

“Our commitment is to promote the greatest good for the greatest number of our people. On principle, we shall never falter, I assure you, my fellow countrymen and women, that we are exiting the darkness to enter a new and glorious dawn. Now, I must get back to work to make this vision come true,” he added

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has cautioned Nigerians wanting to travel to the United Kingdom (UK) against increased risk of violence in the place.

Amb. Eche Abu-Obe, Spokeperson of the Ministry disclosed this in a statement on Monday, in view of violence alert to citizens planning to travel to the UK.

“There is an an increased risk of violence and disorder occasioned by the recent riots in the UK, stemming from the killing of three young girls at a concert.

“The violence has assumed dangerous proportions as evidenced by reported attacks on Law enforcement agents and damage to infrastructure.

“To this end, citizens are advised to be extra vigilant, avoid political processions and protests, rallies or marches.

“Avoid crowded areas and large gatherings, be vigilant and self aware at all times.

The spokesperson said demonstrations by far right and other extra-parliamentary groups in parts of the UK in recent weeks have been large and in some instances unruly.

According to him, these disturbances have only been aggravated by the unfortunate deaths of the three girls.

“It has spawned an anti-immigration narrative, with particular emphasis on Muslim immigrants or persons of colour being targeted.

“This advisory remains under review,” he added.

  • Protests, Counter-protests and allied Matters – Hope Eghagha

Protests, Counter-protests and allied Matters – Hope Eghagha

So it was that some Nigerians, exasperated, dissatisfied and angry with the existing socio-economic conditions in the country, gave a long notice to the Nigerian state that there would be a ‘day of rage’ come 1st of August, a day when Nigerians would take to the streets and express their umbrage about living conditions in the country. It was notice long enough for a new city to be built to accommodate a new generation of Nigerians; it was notice long enough for dialogue and policy direction change to whittle down the notches of anger in the land! At a point I thought the protesters were not serious, what with the full gear of negative reactions from the purveyors of the commonwealth. I thought that they were simply trying to rattle the government and move on, just to make a point that the Jagaban had not and has not put the conscience inside the pocket of complacency and money.

But, the state preferred threats, cajoling, labeling, and bullying tactics to scare the angry citizens in the land! Some of the spokesperson of government, official and unofficial, compromised and uncompromised, with some speaking from both sides of the mouth, made sure that the polity became a parliament of fowls! Was that ugly and arrogant statement credited to Senate President true?
There were also attempts to ethnicize the protests. Which was unfortunate. Hunger and inflation do not recognize ethnic boundaries. A hungry man from Sokoto can be as angry as a hungry man from Nembe. So, one of the features of underdevelopment reared its head: ethnicity as a basis for supporting or opposing the bad governance protest. Is being foulmouthed, insulting, and rude some of the requirements for being a presidential spokesman? Bayo Onanuga, what is wrong?

To be sure, the removal of fuel subsidy and the runaway inflation which unleashed itself on both the rich and poor compounded matters for everyone. As with the seller, the Bible says, so with the buyer! Garri, the poor man’s staple food, became gold. Rice? Chicken? These have become luxuries that only the upper middleclass can afford. Amidst these, there rumours of scandalous expenditures on luxury items in the seat of government. Rumours of humongous sums disappearing from the national coffers into the pockets of elected and appointed rulers. How did we enter this foretold hardship while a supposedly democratic government held sway?

The media, both social and mainstream, could not identify the leaders of the proposed strike. The federal government was insanely jittery. And it took desperate measures. The IG fingered mercenaries. A presidential spokesman fingered a former presidential candidate as the sponsor of the protests. Some ‘owners’ of the city of Lagos warned protesters against taking to the streets in Lagos, that they should go to their home states to stage their protests, that masquerades will be released into the streets to unleash the power of the Oro juju on protesters.

From this point on, a comedy of sorts grew wings like the proverbial horse in Greek mythology as government went on the offensive, recruiting foot soldiers to condemn the very idea of a national protest, and threatening brimstone and fire on protesters. Indeed, days before the protest was supposed to start, some groups who did not want the August 1st protests took to the streets with their placards, that is protesting the protest that was yet to take place! What an absurdity?

The protest took off. Arise TV gave us a big objective peep into the actions of protesters. Most states in the federation preached against the protest. Of course, they were protecting their infrastructure. They did not necessarily support the regime of hunger and hardship which the President unleashed on the nation as soon as he took over. But everyone knows the implication of a breakdown of law and order in any environment.

The President’s failure or refusa0l to address the nation before the protests is a minus. Asiwaju Bola Tinubu is a veteran of many battles. He has led protests, sponsored some and had established his credentials as a democrat. But in handling the ANISARS and Bad Governance protests, he did not acquit himself as a democrat. What has happened to the activist? Has he been caged by security forces and the henchmen who parade the corridors of power?

Protests are a part of democracy. Indeed, the very fact that people can protest is an ingredient of democracy. The protesters may not be right. But they have the right to be wrong. Often people who are in power get disconnected from the people they lead or rule over. It is a weakness in human nature. A protest is a way of jolting the powers-that-be into reality. It is true that often protests lead to violent actions. Some persons see protests as an opportunity to break all the rules of the land. They burn. They loot. They steal. They kill. Yet, this does not give the state the right to ban protests. Good governance minimizes protests.

President Tinubu should address the nation. He missed the opportunity to prevent the protest when he refused to negotiate with its leaders. He has unilaterally made some concessions by approving the new minimum wage with such speed as was never recorded before in our history. There is the naira concession to Dangote Refinery which if properly managed could bring down energy costs. But he must tackle inflation. He must do something about the value of the naira in relation to foreign currencies. He must step in vigorously into farmer-herder conflicts in the country which have affected production of food crops. The almighty rice must be taken on frontally now. Increased domestic production of rice has not brought down the price of rice. He should target garri production and its costs. Tinubu is a fantastic negotiator who can negotiate with the devil and get a reprieve or a bonus. He should do same with those who hold the levers of rice, wheat, and garri production and distribution.

There is too much anger in the land. It is fueled by lack of access to food. Food! Food! That people are hungry and angry is no news. Not even obsequious aides can hide this from the president. Hunger now wears a coat, adorns it with agbada and babaringa and parades round homes in the country. The energy behind efforts to thwart the protests should have been directed into meeting the demands of the protesters. As a democrat, Tinubu should side with the people, the people he had led to the trenches when he was on the other side. Let it not be said that he fought the system only because he wanted to inherit power. That would be a tragedy. Things ought to change, Mr. President, Sir!

  • Avoid planned protest – Akume appeals to Nigerians

Avoid planned protest – Akume appeals to Nigerians

Secretary to the Government of the Federation, (SGF) Senator George Akume, has called on Nigerians not to embark on the planned nationwide protests slated August 1.

Akume made the call during a press briefing in Abuja on the eve of the planned demonstrations in the 36 states of the federation and the FCT.

According to him, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration is making concerted efforts to solve the myriads of challenges confronting the nation.

“We therefore appeal to Nigerians of whatever persuasion, belief, demography, gender and status to shun calls for protest against hunger by prioritising peace and progress,” the SGF said.

He expressed optimism that with the several interventions by the Federal Government, the hardships Nigerians were experiencing would be a thing of the past.

“The ongoing economic hardships would abate very soon and we shall all enjoy endless prosperity.

“For the avoidance of doubts, the government of President Tinubu recognises the right to peaceful protest but circumspection and vigilance should be our watchwords.

“Government is weary of the dangers associated with protests that are vulnerable to being highjacked by bandits, insurgents and other criminals. Rather, we request that dialogue should be advanced and we remain open to such,” he said.
