PSG star Neymar denies sex assault claim

US sportswear giant Nike says it stopped working with Brazilian footballer Neymar because he “refused to co-operate in a good faith investigation” into an allegation of sexual assault against an employee.

The alleged incident happened in 2016 and was reported to Nike in 2018.

Nike said its investigation was inconclusive.

A spokeswoman for Neymar said he denied the sexual assault and split with Nike last year for commercial reasons.

“Neymar Jr will vigorously defend himself against these baseless attacks in case any claim is presented, which did not happen so far,” she told the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) newspaper, which first reported the news.

Nike parted ways with Neymar in August 2020, ending one of its most high-profile sponsorship deals. The company gave no reason for the split at the time.

In its statement on Thursday, it said: “It would be inappropriate for Nike to make an accusatory statement without being able to provide supporting facts.”

But it added: “Nike ended its relationship with the athlete because he refused to co-operate in a good faith investigation of credible allegations of wrongdoing by an employee.”

Nike said the employee reported the allegations in 2018 but initially wanted to avoid an investigation and keep it confidential. It said it commissioned an independent investigation into the matter the following year, when she expressed an interest in pursuing it.

The alleged victim has not been named, with Nike saying: “We continue to respect the confidentiality of the employee and also recognise that this has been a long and difficult experience for her.”

Neymar currently plays for French side Paris Saint-Germain.

He previously denied accusations of rape in 2019, in a case that was eventually dropped.

  • Man City replaces Nike with £650m Puma kit deal

Premier League champions Manchester City have signed a long-term kit deal with Germany’s Puma, replacing their current agreement with Nike.

The size of the deal was not disclosed, but media reports suggest it could be worth up to £65m a year for 10 years.

It will come into effect in July and also covers sister clubs in Australia, Spain, Uruguay and China.

Puma chief executive Bjorn Gulden said it was the biggest deal his firm had ever done.

He said Puma wanted to “maximise on-field performance as well as football culture, in areas such as music, gaming and fashion, to connect and inspire the fanbase of each team”.

Ferran Soriano, boss of the club’s holding company City Football Group (CFG), said: “It is a historic day for us. What we are doing has not been done before. It is an unprecedented partnership.”

Mr Sorriano said the sponsorship agreement would “reset the model for sports partnerships on a truly global scale”.

The other clubs covered by the deal are Melbourne City, Girona, Club Atletico Torque and Sichuan Jiunjiu.

  • NFF signs improved long-term contract with Nike

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has signed an improved four-year contract with Nike, till 2022 with an option to extend the deal by another four years.

The “improved” agreement was signed on Tuesday at a ceremony attended by officials from both organisations in Asaba, Delta state capital.

The four-year deal has a renewal clause that will extend the partnership to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

President of the NFF, Amaju Pinnick, wearing a Nigeria home kit, expressed his satisfaction at the new deal from Nike highlighting the progress made compared to past years.

“I am happy we are here now. We now have an improved offer. We are Nike’s beautiful bride. We are one of only two countries they are sponsoring in Africa.

“A few months after we came on board for our first term in office, I was told that we needed to buy jerseys for the National Team to play a football match.

“That was how bad it was because the kit sponsor at that time terminated the contract.

“So, I made contacts with some highly connected persons and worked hard to convince Nike to come on board. We were coming from a weak position but they made the agreement flexible for us.

“Today, we are happy we teamed up with Nike because after we qualified and participated at the FIFA World Cup in Russia, the company was the one chasing us for a new improved contract.

Shehu Dikko, chairman of NFF marketing, sponsorship and TV rights committee, said all the national teams “are captured” in the new deal.

Tina Salminen, Nike’s sports marketing director (African Football), said the company is “very happy with its relationship with Nigeria”.

Salminen added: “The jersey we designed for Nigeria for the FIFA World Cup won the award as for best-designed jersey and was hugely popular.

“It has remained a source of reference in Nike meetings and events ever since. Nigeria is one of the big teams in world football and we are happy to get them to sign a long-term contract.”
