Expert advice: How to care for children, elderly this rainy season

Dr Segun Adeoye, a public health specialist, has advised Nigerians to adopt healthy habits to stay warm and avoid illness as cold weather continues across parts of the country.

In an interview on Tuesday in Abuja, Adeoye warned that exposure to intense cold could lead to pneumonia, influenza, respiratory infections, and aggravate conditions like asthma and arthritis.

He explained that the ongoing spell of chilly mornings and evenings was due to seasonal weather changes bringing damp and windy conditions.

The Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet) recently warned of lower-than-normal temperatures, especially at night and in the early morning, possibly lasting into September.

Vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and the immunocompromised are most at risk.

To stay protected, Adeoye recommended: Dressing in layers of breathable, warm clothing, Using thick blankets, insulated bedding, and proper home insulation and light physical activity like exercise or dancing generating body heat.

Speaking in the interview with NAN, he also advised drinking hot beverages like tea or cocoa, eating nourishing hot meals like soups, stews, and porridge, taking warm baths and using heating devices where available.

Adeoye also cautioned against prolonged exposure to cold and wet conditions and urged the use of scarves, hats, gloves, and thick socks when outdoors.

“Prevention remains the best protection,” he said, adding that many Nigerians underestimate the health risks of cold weather. Adeoye called on parents to ensure children were properly dressed during the day and kept warm at night.

  • Oyo, Ogun, Kwara step up preparations for flood as NiMet warns of heavy rains

Oyo, Ogun, Kwara step up preparations for flood as NiMet warns of heavy rains

Governments of Oyo, Ogun, and Kwara states have put in place proactive measures to mitigate the impact of flooding following predictions by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) of possible heavy rainfall in parts of the country.

The state governments said on Monday that public sensitisation, infrastructural interventions, and multi-agency coordination had been prioritised to reduce disaster risks in flood-prone areas.

NiMet had forecasted increased rainfall and potential flooding in several states between July and August 2025, urging governments to implement preventive actions.

In response, state officials in Oyo, Ogun and Kwara said a series of preparatory efforts had commenced to safeguard lives and property.

Mr Daniel Ajayi, Operations Officer of the Oyo State Emergency Management Agency (OYSEMA), said the agency had collaborated with relevant stakeholders to ensure an effective response system.

“We have pre-positioned relief materials including foodstuffs, building materials, and household items in our warehouses to support affected residents if flooding occurs,” he said.

Ajayi noted that medical teams, in collaboration with the Red Cross, had been placed on alert. He added that continuous sensitisation campaigns were ongoing via radio, television, marketplaces, and public areas.

“We have also alerted residents in flood-prone communities to prepare for possible heavy rains,” he said.

According to him, the state government had cleared several river channels, particularly in high-risk zones, and warned residents against indiscriminate dumping of waste in drains.

Also speaking, the Head of Operations, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) South-West, Mr Kadiri Olanrewaju, said the agency had conducted stakeholder engagements across affected local government areas in Ibadan, including Lagelu, Ona-Ara, and Egbeda.

He said, “The initiative aims to promote early action and preparedness. We’ve met with council chairmen and community leaders to develop coordinated responses.”

Olanrewaju stressed the need for inter-agency and inter-governmental collaboration, calling on local and state governments to take proactive steps.

“There is an urgent need to dredge waterways and deploy waste management trucks across the state. Many flooding incidents are preventable,” he added.

Mr Johnson Adekola, Technical Officer with the Ibadan Urban Flood Management Project (IUFMP), said the agency had intensified its flood preparedness response since NiMet’s alert.

He said major rivers such as Agodi, Ogunpa, Ogbere, Omin, and Onipepeye had been cleared to ensure smooth water flow.

“Our structural and non-structural interventions include early warning systems, improved drainage channels, and sensitisation of residents along riverbanks,” Adekola said.

In Ogun State, the Commissioner for Environment, Mr Ola Oresanya, said the government had begun its annual flood preparedness campaign since March, following NiMet’s prediction.

He stated that rainfall in the state was expected to range between 965mm and 1805mm, with dry spells projected between April and July.

“Flooding is part of our seasonal cycle, and we must prepare adequately. Our flood alerts help residents anticipate periods of heavy rainfall,” Oresanya said.

According to him, the first rains peaked in July with over 360mm of rainfall, while the second phase is expected in mid-August through September.

Oresanya explained that ongoing infrastructural interventions include the de-silting of over 988.3km of waterways, construction of 698 metres of drainage channels, and the dredging of the Opa Aro River.

“These efforts have reduced flood duration in areas like Isheri from six weeks to three weeks. We are also working closely with community leaders and CDAs at the grassroots level,” he added.

He urged residents, especially in flood-prone areas, to heed relocation advice, noting: “We are committed not only to reducing flood impact but also to achieving zero fatalities.”

Mr Saheed Akiode, Zonal Director for NEMA South-West, also issued a flood alert, warning of possible flooding in several communities over the next 28 days.

“We’ve mobilised all relevant agencies, including the Ministries of Water Resources, Environment, and Health, to scale up preparedness,” he said.

Akiode urged state governments to clear blocked canals, monitor vulnerable communities, and stockpile relief materials.

Meanwhile, the Kwara State Government has advised residents to stay alert in anticipation of heavy rains accompanied by lightning and thunderstorms.

Mr Agboola Olanrewaju, Director of Public Orientation in the Ministry of Communications, said the state had embarked on public sensitisation, particularly targeting those living near rivers.

“Relocation of residents in vulnerable areas is ongoing to prevent avoidable loss of life,” he said.

Olanrewaju also warned against movement during heavy rainfall and advised residents to unplug electrical appliances to avoid power surges.

He added that the state government was currently dredging the Asa River and clearing drainages within the metropolis to enhance flood control.

  • Flood: Benue Govt. sounds urgent alarm for residents to relocate

Flood: Benue Govt. sounds urgent alarm for residents to relocate

Following the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet)’s prediction of an impending flood in Benue, the state government has advised residents living along flood-prone areas to relocate to safer areas.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Dr James Iorpuu, told NAN on Wednesday in Makurdi that government had also taken steps to mitigate the negative effects of the impending flood.

Iorpuu said that the ministry and the committee on flood embarked on a series of enlightenment campaigns.

The permanent secretary advised those residing on waterways to immediately relocate to safe areas.

According to him, the government cleared all blocked drainages within the urban areas for easy flow of water.

Iorpuu, who is also a member of the Technical Committee on Disaster Response in Nigeria, said the government also launched e-emergency platforms on how emergencies are reported, analysed, and responded to.

He said the ministry had already written to the government requesting funds to take care of impending flood victims.

Iorpuu, who is also the Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency, said the ongoing multi-billion naira Idye drainage was one of the proactive measures taken by government to mitigate the impact of flood.

“I also want to use this platform again to appeal to Benue people to vacate flood-prone areas.

“They know themselves. Year in year out, when there is a flood, they vacate, and when it is no more, they go back to their shelters along the river bank.

“Some have built their houses on waterways; we are begging them to vacate such areas. You also see what the governor is doing within the state capital, building roads and water channels for free flow of water.

“This flood is not only going to affect animals; it will affect human beings and farmlands, amongst others.

“We need to change our attitude on waste management too. You saw what happened in Adamawa few weeks ago, so I am begging people to move to safe areas,” he said.

The government had already earmarked camps for would-be Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).

Meanwhile, a Makurdi resident, Mr James Ejembi, told NAN that the only permanent solution to the problem was the dredging of River Benue and the completion of Kamshimbila Dam.

Ejembi said that the dredging and completion of the dam would absorb the water that comes from Lagdo Dam, located in Cameroon.

NiMet lists northern states to experience above-normal rainfall

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted that Gombe, Kano, Bauchi, and seven Northern states will experience above-normal rainfall in the coming days as the country approaches the peak of the rainy season.

This is contained in the agency’s August weather outlook predictions and made available by the NiMet Meteorological Manager for Gombe, Gayus Musa, on Tuesday in Gombe.

According to the agency, other states to experience downpour include Sokoto, Zamfara, Jigawa, Katsina, Yobe, Borno, and Kebbi.

The agency said that August was expected to bring increased rainfall intensity and frequency, especially in the extreme northern regions.

In view of the predictions, NiMet warned that the situation could result in increased soil moisture and rising river levels, which could significantly heighten the risk of flash and riverine flooding.

The agency advised flood-prone and riverine communities to remain alert, follow local evacuation instructions when issued, and keep essential documents and valuables in waterproof containers.

It also advised emergency management agencies to act on NiMet’s frequent updates by sensitising and preparing communities in flood-prone areas for possible evacuation or risk mitigation measures.

The agency also urged community leaders to activate local flood response plans and raise awareness on flood safety, hygiene, and health measures.

NiMet further stated that temperatures in August were expected to remain relatively low, particularly during the night and early morning hours, which may affect vulnerable populations.

“The public is advised to dress infants and young children warmly and boost immunity through proper nutrition, especially increased Vitamin C intake, to reduce the risk of seasonal illnesses.

“Cooler mornings and nights may lead to cold-related illnesses; dress infants and young children warmly,” it said.

NiMet also forecast that parts of Taraba, southern Adamawa, and the Federal Capital Territory were predicted to experience slightly below-normal rainfall.

It also said that the Southwest was predicted to experience a brief dry spell in early August, with gradual recovery of rainfall expected later in the month.
