    NiMet predicts 3 days hazy weather condition

    The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted hazy weather condition from Tuesday to Thursday across the country.

    NiMet’s weather outlook released on Monday in Abuja predicted thick dust haze over the Northern region throughout the forecast period on Tuesday.

    According to the agency, moderate dust haze should prevail over North-Central and inland cities of South with horizontal visibility values ranging from 2,000m to 5,000m and localised horizontal visibility of less than or equal to 1, 000m throughout forecast period.

    “Morning fog or misty atmosphere with few patches of clouds are anticipated over the coastal cities of the South within the forecast period.

    “However, slim chances of isolated rains are anticipated over Bayelsa, Rivers, Lagos, Ogun and Delta in the afternoon or evening period,” it said.

    The agency forecasted thick dust haze over the Northern cities throughout the period on Wednesday.

    It further forecasted moderate dust haze with visibility values ranging from 2,000m to 5,000m over the North-Central and inland cities of the South throughout the forecast period.

    “Fog or mist is anticipated in the morning hours over coastal cities of the South.

    “Afterwards, the coastal cities should be under hazy atmosphere with few patches of cloud within the forecast period.

    “Also, slim chances of isolated rains are anticipated over Rivers, Bayelsa and Eket in the afternoon and evening period,” it said.

    According to NiMet, moderate dust haze with visibility values from 2,000m to 5,000m is expected over the Northern region within the forecast period on Thursday.

    It anticipated moderate dust haze with horizontal visibility values ranging from 2,000m to 5,000m and localised horizontal visibility values of less than 1,000m over the North-Central and inland cities of the South throughout the forecast period.

    Flash flood damages houses, vehicles in Lagos

    The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) says a flash flood caused by downpour on Sunday damaged several houses and vehicles in some parts of the Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State.

    NEMA also advised residents and motorists in the area to exercise outmost caution as some electric poles fell due to the downpour.

    Mr Ibrahim Farinloye, Acting Zonal Coordinator, South West Zonal Office, NEMA, gave the advice in a statement he issued in Lagos.

    He said the downpour affected Oko Oba, Ekoro, Akowonjo, Egbeda and Ekoro axis.

    Farinloye said: “Rainfall that started around 1.20 p.m has led to flash flooding which affected many buildings and disrupted normal activities in many communities.

    “The water overflowing from the canal entered into residential houses. Several houses were affected and the enumeration cannot be done today. ”

    Farinloye also disclosed that Ikeja Electric Plc has been contacted to isolate the areas were electricity poles fell down to prevent electrocution.

    “Motorists are advised to exercise utmost cautions as the traffic gridlock is terrible due to every motorist trying to access the junction at the same.

    “Upon assessment about 25 vehicles were found to have their engines affected with floodwaters and the owners have been advised to avoid driving the vehicles.

    “As at now, there is no report of loss of life,” he added.

    The Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NIMet) had on Aug. 25 warned of flash floods in 34 states, including Lagos.

    NiMet predicts thunderstorms, rain in 26 states

    The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has urged Nigerians to prepare for heavy rainfall in 26 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

    It, therefore, warned intending road and air travellers to reconsider their plans to commute to the affected states.

    The agency said heavy rainfall was expected in parts of Kaduna, Niger, Plateau, Bauchi, Enugu, Anambra, Ebonyi, Imo, Abia, Benue and the FCT between July 31 and August 1, while moderate to heavy rainfall was expected over parts of Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, Yobe, Borno, Gombe, Adamawa, Taraba, Kwara, Kogi, Nasarawa, Cross River and Akwa Ibom states.

    In its impact-based weather forecast for July 30, 31 and August 1, NiMet said the states were at risk of experiencing flooding of roads, low-lying settlements, streams and river channels.

    It also said flight operations could be disrupted due to poor visibility.

    Several lives and property have been lost to the devastating effect of flooding from heavy rains in different parts of the country.

    On July 23, at least 19 persons were confirmed dead in Kano after the vehicle they were travelling in was said to have been swept away in the Doguwa Local Government Area of the state.

    On Wednesday, several farmlands, including 150 hectares of rice farm, bridges and culverts were reported to have been destroyed by flood in some villages in the Bogoro Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

    Also, heavy rains on July 15 had left many residents of Lagos stranded as flood ravaged different parts of the state.

    However, the NiMet forecast dated July 29, 2021, read in part, “During the forecast period, heavy rainfall is expected over parts of Kaduna, Niger, Plateau, Bauchi, Enugu, Anambra, Ebonyi, Imo, Abia, Benue and the FCT.

    “Furthermore, there are chances of moderate to heavy rainfall over parts of Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, Yobe, Borno, Gombe, Adamawa, Taraba, Kwara, Kogi, Nasarawa, Cross River and Akwa Ibom states. However, light rains are expected over the rest of the country.

    “As a result of the heavy rainfall expected and the presence of a good amount of soil moisture over most places in the next three days, there are chances of flooding of roads, low-lying settlements, streams and river channels.”

    It added, “Also, disruption of traffic due to flooded or closed roads, reduction in visibility, delay in flight operations, damage to mud houses and makeshift structures, possible damage to roads and bridges.

    “Thus, the public is advised to exercise restraint and wait till after the rains to commute, emergency agencies are to be prepared and keep monitoring, avoid low-level areas and fast-flowing runoff waters. Hence, the public is advised to be prepared for these events to avoid damage from rain-related hazard. Elsewhere, no hydrometeorological hazards are anticipated.”

    Flood kills 26, destroy 1,000 houses in Kano State

    The Kano State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) said on Friday that flood killed 26 people and destroyed over 1,000 houses in four Local Government Areas of the state from April to date.

    The Executive Secretary, Kano SEMA, Dr Saleh Jili, who confirmed the figures in an interview in Kano, said that 50 other persons sustained injuries due to the the flood and windstorm.

    According to him, the affected local government areas are Bunkure, Minjibir, Tarauni and Doguwa.

    He said that the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet) had earlier predicted that there would be flooding in 25 local government areas of the state this year.

    The SEMA boss said the agency had visited the affected areas to sympathise with the victims on behalf of state government and distributed relief materials to them to alleviate their suffering.

    “The items distributed included bags of cement, bags of rice, maize, millet, roofing sheets and toiletries,’’ he said.

    The executive secretary, however, commended Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje and the state Commissioner for Special Duties, Mr Muntari Ishaq, for supporting the agency.

    He called on donor agencies and wealthy individuals to assist in supporting the victims.

    “Our economy is down due to COVID-19; the government cannot do it alone,’’ he said.

    Jili also called on those living close to rivers and ponds in the state to vacate the areas for one to two months period.

    “If the rivers and ponds are over filled with water, please vacate your houses,’’ the SEMA boss advised.

    He further urged residents of the state to clear the drains in front of their houses to prevent flooding.

    “I urge those who are not yet affected by the flood to do everything possible to prevent it by clearing their drainages, collecing refuge and taking it to the appropriate place,’’ he said.

    Jili added that the agency would not relent in its effort to ensure protection of lives and properties.

    NiMet’s weather outlook released on Wednesday in Abuja also predicted cloudy skies over the Northern region.

    It also predicted thunderstorms over Kano; Kaduna; Zamfara; Sokoto; Borno; Adamawa; Gombe; Yobe ; and Kebbi states during the morning hours.

    According to NiMet, there are prospects of wide spread thunderstorms across the Northern region in the afternoon and evening period.

    NiMet anticipated cloudy skies over the North central region in the morning hours with chances of thunderstorms and rains over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Kwara and Nasarawa states.

    “ Later in the day, isolated thunderstorms are anticipated over parts of Plateau, Benue, Kwara, Kogi and the Federal Capital Territory.

    “The Inland and the Coastal cities of the South are expected to be cloudy in the morning hours with chances of rains over parts of Lagos, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Imo, Ondo, Bayelsa and Ogun.

    “ Later in the day, thunderstorms and rains are anticipated over parts of Enugu, Imo, Ondo, Benin, Cross River, Delta, Rivers and Lagos, “ it said.

    The agency envisaged cloudy skies over the Northern region in the morning hours on Thursday with isolated thunderstorms over parts of Borno, Yola and Bauchi states.

    NiMet anticipated thunderstorms over parts of Katsina, Borno, Gombe and Bauchi later in the day.

    “The North Central region is expected to be under cloudy skies with chances of isolated thunderstorms and rains over parts of Niger, Nasarawa and Plateau in the morning hours.

    “ Later in the day, isolated thunderstorms are anticipated over parts of Kwara, Kogi, Benue, Niger and the Federal Capital Territory.

    “Cloudy skies are anticipated over the Inland and the Coastal cities of the South with chances of thunderstorms and rains over Ondo and Ebonyi in the morning hours,” it said.

    The agency also forecast thunderstorms and rains over parts of Oyo, Ondo, Enugu, Osun, Imo, Abia, Cross River, Delta, Akwa Ibom, Lagos and Rivers later in the day.

    According to NiMet, cloudy skies are anticipated over the Northern region on Friday with chances of thunderstorms over parts of Katsina, Kano, Bauchi, Gombe and Yobe in the afternoon and evening hours .

    It predicted cloudy skies to prevail over the North central region in the morning hours with chances of moderate rains over Kwara, Niger and Kogi.

    NiMet anticipated isolated thunderstorms over parts of Benue, Nasarawa and the Federal Capital Territory later in the day.

    The agency anticipated cloudy skies over the Inland and Coastal cities of the South with chances of thunderstorms over parts of Rivers during the morning hours.

    NiMet predicted prospects of thunderstorms and rains over the Coastal cities and parts of Ondo; Oyo; Ogun; Umuahia; Imo; and Enugu states in the evening.

    According to it, there are prospects of isolated thunderstorms over parts of Taraba, Kaduna, Adamawa, Zamfara and Kebbi while Sokoto has prospect of thunderstorms with little or no rains later in the day.

    The agency forecast the north central cities to be cloudy with intervals of sunshine in the morning hours.

    It further forecast chances of thunderstorms over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Nassarawa, Kwara, Niger, Benue, Kogi and Plateau later in the day.

    “Cloudy skies should prevail over the inland cities of the South with chances of isolated thunderstorms over parts of Ogun, Edo and Ondo state in the morning hours.

    “ Later in the day, thunderstorms are expected over parts of Imo, Oyo, Enugu, Osun, Anambra, Ekiti, Edo, Delta, Abia, Cross River and Ondo during the afternoon and evening hours.

    “The Coastal cities of the South are expected to be cloudy with chances of thunderstorms over Lagos, Delta and Bayelsa in the morning hours, “ it said.

    NiMet envisaged chances of thunderstorms over parts of Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Cross River and Bayelsa during the afternoon and evening hours.

    According to the agency, cloudy skies with intervals of sunshine are expected over

    the northern cities in the morning hours on Monday.

    It, however, forecast chances of thunderstorms over parts of Kebbi, Zamfara, Kaduna, Adamawa and Sokoto during the afternoon and evening hours.

    NiMet predicted cloudy skies with intervals of sunshine over north central region during the morning hours with chances of thunderstorms over parts of Benue, Kwara, Niger, Plateau, Kogi and Federal Capital Territory during afternoon and evening hours.

    “ Cloudy skies are expected over the Inland cities of the south with chances of thunderstorms over parts of Ogun state in the morning hours.

    “ Later in the day, thunderstorms are expected over parts of Imo, Ogun, Osun, Anambra and Ondo State during the afternoon and evening hours.

    “The coastal cities of the south are expected to be cloudy with chances of thunderstorms over Bayelsa, Cross River, Rivers and Akwa Ibom in the morning hours,“ it said.

    NiMet anticipated chances of thunderstorms over parts of Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Cross River and Lagos during the afternoon and evening hours later in the day.

    The agency predicted sunny skies with patches of cloud over the northern region with chances of morning rains over Kaduna and Kebbi on Tuesday.

    It envisaged cloudy skies with intervals of sunshine over the north central region with prospects of morning rains over parts of Niger state.

    “There are chances of isolated thunderstorms over parts Federal Capital Territory, Kwara, Taraba, Niger and Kogi.

    “The inland and coastal cities of the south are expected to be cloudy in the morning hours with chances of rains over Lagos, Cross River, Rivers and Bayelsa.

    “Later in the day, isolated thunderstorms are expected over parts

    of Ondo, Edo, Osun, Imo, Anambra, Cross River, Rivers and Bayelsa,“ it said.

    President Muhammadu Buhari has approved some reorganizations, and made new appointments in agencies under the ministry of aviation.

    This, James Odaudu, Director, Public Affairs, Ministry of Aviation in a statement, said was in line with the administration’s commitment to the implementation of the Aviation Development Roadmap.

    According to the statement, President Buhari approved the appointment of Professor Bako Mansur Matazu as the new Director-General of the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NIMET).

    He replaces Professor Sani Abubakar Mashi.

    “Professor Matazu holds a PhD in Geography (Applied Meteorology), with membership of the Nigerian Environmental Society, African Forestry Forum, Nigerian Meteorological Society, the Climate Change Network, Nigeria and the renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency, Nigeria (REEN).

    “He was, until his appointment, the General Manager, Meteorological Research in the Agency.

    “Also approved by the President is the appointment of Captain Modibbo Alkali Mahmud as the new Rector of the Nigeria College of Aviation Technology, (NCAT) Zaria.

    “The new Rector holds the Airline Transport Pilot Licenses of the Federal Aviation Administration, USA, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Embraer, Citation and other international professional certifications.

    “Until his appointment, Captain Modibbo had served in various capacities, including Pilot in Training, Fleet Captain at Dornier Aviation Nigeria, Max Air and other organisations and has clocked about 6000 hours of flying career.

    “In a related development, the President has also approved the reappointment of Engr. Akin Olateru as the Commissioner / Chief Executive Officer of the Accident Investigation Bureau, Nigeria.

    “An Aircraft Maintenance Engineer with Nigerian, UK and USA licenses, Olateru began his career in engineering maintenance with Pan African Airlines and the Nigerian Police Air Wing after which he left Nigeria for further studies abroad.

    “He has also worked with multiple airlines in Europe including KLM, Martin Air in Holland, British Aerospace Engineering and British Midland Airways.

    “He attended City University, London and graduated with an M.Sc. in Air Transport Management with specializations in research and simulations into accident investigations.

    “All the appointments are with immediate effect.

    “It should be noted that the reorganisation is a continuous exercise that will involve other management staff of all agencies of the Ministry,” the statement reads.

    NiMet`s weather outlook released on Friday in Abuja predicted sunny and hazy conditions over the northern region on Saturday.

    According to it, the North Central region should be in sunny condition with partly cloudy skies over some parts of the region throughout the forecast period.

    “Partly cloudy skies with intervals of sunshine are expected over the inland cities with prospect of few thunderstorms over parts of Edo, Delta and Ogun in the afternoon and evening period.

    “The coastal cities of the South should be mostly cloudy with chances of few thunderstorms over the coastal parts of Rivers, Bayelsa and Cross Rivers in the morning hours.

    “Later in the day, few thunderstorms are expected over parts of Akwa Ibom, Rivers and Cross Rivers, ” it said.
    The agency forecast sunny and hazy conditions over the region in the morning hours of Sunday.

    It further forecast dust haze over the northern region later in the day.

    NiMet envisaged the North Central region to be in sunny condition in the morning and partly cloudy skies with intervals of sunshine in the afternoon and evening period.

    According to it, partly cloudy skies with intervals of sunshine are expected over inland and coastal cities with prospects of few thunderstorms over parts of Cross river and Akwa Ibom state during the afternoon and evening period.

    The agency anticipated dust haze conditions over the northern regions on Monday.

    “The North Central region should be in sunny condition in the morning, while partly cloudy skies with intervals of sunshine are expected in the afternoon and evening period.

    NiMet’s weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja predicted sunny and dry conditions over northern region throughout the forecast period on Monday.

    According to it, North central region is envisaged to be sunny and dry as well. Partly cloudy skies with sunshine intervals are anticipated over the inland within the forecast hours.

    “The coastal cities however, are expected to be in partly cloudy to cloudy conditions with chances of few thunderstorms over Lagos, Ijebu, Akwa Ibom in the afternoon and evening hours,” it said.

    Sunny and dry conditions are anticipated over Rivers and the northern region throughout the forecast period on Tuesday.

    According to NiMet, North central cities are also expected to experience sunny and dry conditions throughout the forecast hours.

    “Partly cloudy and sunny conditions are anticipated over the inland while partly cloudy to cloudy conditions should prevail over the coast during the morning hours.

    “There are chances of few thunderstorms over parts Cross River and Rivers state in the afternoon and evening period.

    It forecasts dust haze conditions over River, Lagos, Ogun while envisaged sunny and hazy conditions over the North central region within the forecast period on Wednesday.

    NiMet further forecast partly cloudy to sunny conditions over the inland cities throughout the forecast hours.

    NiMet`s weather outlook released on Wednesday in Abuja predicted cloudy conditions over the northern region on Thursday with prospects of early morning thunderstorms and rains over parts of Kano, Katsina, Sokoto, Kebbi, Bauchi and Kaduna.

    According to the agency, there are prospects of thunderstorms over parts of Sokoto, Zamfara, Kano, Kaduna, Gombe, Bauchi, Adamawa and southern Borno later in the day.

    “The north central cities should be predominantly cloudy with chances of early morning light thunderstorms and rains over parts of Abuja, Niger and Benue.

    “During the afternoon and evening hours, thunderstorms are expected over parts of Kwara, Benue, Plateau, Niger and Abuja.

    “There are prospects of light thunderstorms and rains over parts of Oyo, Edo, Ondo, Lagos, Ogun, Bayelsa and Akwa-Ibom, while other parts of the southern region should be in cloudy condition during the morning hours,“ he said.

    The agency forecast thunderstorms and moderate rains over most places in the region during the afternoon and evening periods.

    NiMet envisaged cloudy skies over the northern region in the morning hours of Friday with thunderstorms over parts of Borno, Kano, Kaduna and Sokoto later in the day.

    “There are prospects of early morning thunderstorms and rains over parts of Nassarawa, Abuja and Plateau state.

    ”Later in the day, thunderstorms and moderate rains are expected over parts of Kwara, Abuja, Niger and Plateau state.

    “Cloudy condition should prevail over most cities of the inland and coastal region with prospects of light to moderate rains over parts of Edo and Delta during the morning hours.

    “ Later in the day, light thunderstorms and rains are expected over most parts of the southern region, “ the agency said.

    Also, cloudy skies are anticipated over northern region in the morning hours of Saturday with prospects of thunderstorms over parts of Sokoto, Gombe, Bauchi, Kano and Kaduna later in the day.

    The agency predicted cloudy skies over most cities in the north central region during the morning hours with prospects of thunderstorms over Minna.

    “Later in the day, few thunderstorms and rains are expected over parts of Niger, Plateau, Benue and Abuja.

    “ There are prospects of thunderstorms and rains over most cities in the southeast inland and parts of Cross River, Akwa-Ibom and Lagos in the morning hours.

    “Few thunderstorms and rains are expected over most cities in the southern region during the afternoon and evening periods,“ it said.
