    NiMet forecasts rain, thunderstorms, flash floods nationwide

    The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecasted rainy and thundery weather conditions across the country from Monday to Wednesday, warning of possible flash floods in some areas.

    NiMet’s weather outlook, released on Sunday in Abuja, predicted thunderstorms with moderate rainfall on Monday morning over parts of Jigawa, Zamfara, Kano, Kaduna, Bauchi, Yobe, and Katsina States in the northern region.

    “The remaining parts of the region are expected to experience sunny conditions with patches of cloud.

    “Thunderstorms with moderate rain are expected during the afternoon or evening hours over parts of Jigawa, Zamfara, Kano, Kaduna, Bauchi, Yobe, Katsina, Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba States,” the agency stated.

    “However, there are chances of flash floods occurring over parts of Bauchi, Jigawa, Katsina, Kaduna, and Kano States during the forecast period.”

    It said in the central region, cloudy skies are anticipated in the morning, with light to moderate rainfall expected in parts of Niger, Benue, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Plateau, and Nasarawa States.

    “Later in the day, rains are expected in Plateau, Nasarawa, FCT, Kogi, Benue, and Niger States.”

    NiMet also noted a high risk of flash flooding in parts of Plateau State.

    For the southern region, cloudy skies would be expected in the morning, with light to moderate rainfall predicted in parts of Ondo, Imo, Abia, Enugu, Ebonyi, Anambra, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom States later in the day.

    On Tuesday, sunny skies with patches of clouds would be expected over the northern region.

    The agency said thunderstorms with moderate rain were anticipated in the morning over parts of Adamawa, Taraba, Yobe, Kaduna, Bauchi, Gombe, Jigawa, Katsina, and Kano States.

    According to NiMet, later in the day, thunderstorms and rain are forecast over Adamawa, Taraba, Jigawa, Kano, Kaduna, Katsina, Sokoto, and Kebbi States.

    “In the central region, light to moderate morning rain is expected over Niger, Benue, FCT, Kogi, Plateau, and Nasarawa States, with moderate rainfall anticipated in Plateau, Niger, FCT, Kwara, Kogi, and Nasarawa later in the day.

    “Over the southern region, cloudy skies are forecast in the morning, with a chance of rain in parts of Akwa Ibom and Cross River States.

    “In the afternoon and evening, moderate rainfall is expected across Abia, Delta, Rivers, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Bayelsa States.”

    On Wednesday, the northern region would be expected to see sunny skies with patches of clouds.

    “Morning thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected over Kaduna, Kebbi, Taraba, Sokoto, Zamfara, Yobe, Jigawa, Kano, and Katsina States.

    “Thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are expected later in the day in Borno, Jigawa, Kaduna, Taraba, Adamawa, Bauchi, Yobe, Gombe, Zamfara, and Kebbi States.

    “The central region will experience cloudy skies with chances of morning thunderstorms and rain in Plateau, Niger, FCT, and Nasarawa States. Moderate rainfall is expected later in the afternoon and evening in the FCT, Plateau, Niger, Benue, and Nasarawa States.”

    According to NiMet, in the southern region, morning rains are forecast in Ebonyi, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Cross River States, with cloudy skies expected elsewhere.

    “During the afternoon and evening, moderate to heavy rains are likely across Ebonyi, Abia, Enugu, Imo, Anambra, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom States.”

    NiMet warned that states at risk of flash floods should activate emergency response systems.

    It advised the public to avoid driving during heavy rains, ensure vulnerable individuals dress warmly due to low night-time temperatures, and take precautions against strong winds that might precede thunderstorms.

    “Ensure that loose objects are fastened to prevent damage. Disconnect electrical appliances during storms and avoid sheltering under tall trees,” the agency advised.

    NiMet also urged airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports (flight documentation) from its offices for effective planning.

    The agency envisaged cloudy skies over the southern region with prospects of light rains over parts of Anambra, Abia, Ebonyi, Imo, Bayelsa, Delta, Cross River, Akwa Ibom and Rivers  during the morning hours.

    It predicted moderate rain to continue into the afternoon or evening hours.

    According to it, there are prospects of thunderstorms on Tuesday with moderate rains over parts of Adamawa, Gombe and Kaduna States during the morning hours in the northern region.

    It forecast thunderstorms with moderate rains during the afternoon or evening hours over parts of Sokoto, Kebbi, Katsina, Kano, Bauchi, Gombe, Adamawa, Taraba, Bauchi, Bauchi, Yobe, Jigawa, Borno and Zamfara.

    “For the central region, morning thunderstorms with light to moderate rains are anticipated over parts of Plateau and Nasarawa States.

    “Afternoon or evening thunderstorms with moderate to heavy rains are anticipated over most parts
    of the region.

    “For the southern region, there are chances of morning rains over parts of Abia, Ebonyi, Imo, Anambra, Enugu, Edo, Ondo, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Rivers and Bayelsa States,” it said.

    The agency anticipated moderate to heavy rains over the entire region during the afternoon or evening periods.

    NiMet predicted morning thunderstorms on Wednesday with rain over parts of Taraba, Jigawa, Kebbi, Kano, Katsina and Kaduna States.

    It forecast thunderstorms with moderate rain over parts of Kebbi, Zamfara, Adamawa, Taraba, Kaduna, Borno and Yobe States later in the day.

    “For the central region: there are chances of thunderstorms with moderate rains over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Benue, Plateau, Kwara, Kogi, Nasarawa and Niger.

    “Thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa, Plateau and Benue states during the afternoon to evening periods.

    “For the southern region, there are prospects of morning coastal rains over parts of Cross River, Delta, Akwa Ibom and Bayelsa States during the morning hours.

    According to it, the remaining parts are expected to be cloudy. Moderate to heavy rains are expected across the Southern region during the afternoon or evening periods.

    NiMet urged the public to take adequate precaution as strong winds might precede the rains in areas where thunderstorms are likely to occur.

    “Ensure that loose objects are fastened to avoid collision. Driving under heavy rain should be avoided. Disconnect electrical appliances from electrical sockets.

    “Stay away from tall trees to avoid impact from falling branches and broken trees. Airline operators are advised to get airport-specific weather reports (flight documentation) from NiMet for effective planning in their operations.

    The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted thunderstorms and sunshine over the country from Friday to Sunday.

    NiMet’s weather outlook released on Thursday in Abuja envisaged thunderstorms in the northern region on Friday.

    It predicted light to moderate rains during the morning hours over parts of Taraba, Borno, Yobe, Jigawa and Bauchi States, while the remaining parts of the region would be sunny with patches of cloud.

    According to it, thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected during the afternoon or evening hours

    “In the central region, sunny skies with patches of cloud are expected over this region during the morning hours.

    “While thunderstorms with moderate rains are anticipated over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa, Kogi, Kwara, Benue, Niger and Plateau states during the afternoon and evening,” it said.

    The agency predicted cloudy skies over the southern region with prospects of morning light rains over parts of Rivers, Cross River and Akwa Ibom.

    It anticipated moderate rains over most parts of the region later in the day.

    NiMet predicted sunny skies in the northern region on Saturday with patches of clouds during the morning hours.

    It envisaged isolated thunderstorms with light rains over parts of Adamawa, Taraba, Jigawa, Bauchi, Borno, Katsina, Zamfara, Yobe and Kaduna States.

    According to it, thunderstorms with moderate rain are expected during the afternoon or evening hours over parts of Sokoto, Kebbi, Katsina, Kano, Borno, Bauchi, Adamawa, Taraba, Zamfara and Kaduna States..

    “On the central region, early morning thunderstorms with light rains are anticipated over parts of Niger and Plateau states.

    “Afternoon or evening thunderstorms with moderate to heavy rains are anticipated over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa, Kogi, Kwara, Benue, and Plateau states.

    ‘’Cloudy skies are expected over the southern region with chances of morning rain over parts of Abia, Ebonyi, Ogun, Ondo, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Rivers and Bayelsa states,”  it said.

    It envisaged moderate to heavy rains  over the region during the afternoon or evening periods.

    NiMet predicted thunderstorms for Sunday in the northern region and envisaged moderate rains during the morning hours over parts of Taraba, Borno, Jigawa, Yobe, Kano, Katsina and Kaduna States.

    It said that the remaining parts of the region would be sunny with patches of cloud.

    He added that thunderstorms with moderate rains would be expected during the afternoon or evening hours over parts of Kebbi, Zamfara, Adamawa, Taraba, Kaduna, Borno and Yobe States.

    According to it, cloudy skies are anticipated over the central region during the morning hours with chances of thunderstorms with moderate rains over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Benue, Nasarawa, Kwara, Niger and Plateau States.

    It envisaged light to moderate rains  over parts of Benue, the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa and Plateau states later in the day.

    NiMet anticipated morning rains over parts of Ondo, Edo, Ogun, Cross River, Bayelsa and Akwa Ibom during the morning hours in the southern region with the rest of the day being cloudy.

    It added that moderate to heavy rains would be expected over the southern region during the afternoon or evening periods.

    It urged the public to take extra care as strong winds might precede the rains in areas where thunderstorms would likely occur.

    “Ensure that loose objects are fastened to avoid collision. Driving under heavy rain should be avoided. Disconnect electrical appliances from electrical sockets.

    “Stay away from tall trees to avoid impact from falling branches and broken trees,’’ it said.

    JUST IN: NiMeT issues flash flood alert for 16 States

    The Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a flash flood risk alert across major cities in the country.

    The agency, in a statement, identified 16 States likely to experience flooding due to the start of the rainy season.

    The States include Sokoto, Kaduna, Zamfara, Yobe, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Jigawa, Adamawa, Taraba and Niger

    Other States listed as flood risks include Nasarawa, Benue, Ogun, Ondo, Lagos, Delta, Edo, Cross River, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom.

    NiMet urged residents in these areas to take precautions, such as relocating if needed, clearing drainage systems, preparing emergency kits, shutting off electricity and gas during floods, and reinforcing measures to prevent mudslides.

    “In the North-central region, partly cloudy atmosphere is expected during the morning hours. Later in the day, isolated thunderstorms with rains are anticipated over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Kwara, Benue, Kogi, Nasarawa, Plateau and Niger.

    “In the southern region, morning rain showers are anticipated over parts of Cross River, Bayelsa, Delta and Akwa Ibom.

    “In the North-central region, patches of clouds with sunshine intervals are expected with prospects of thunderstorms with rains over parts of Benue and Kogi States in the morning hours,” it stated.

    NiMet forecast thunderstorms with rains over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Kwara, Benue, Kogi, Plateau and Nasarawa States in the afternoon and evening hours.

    According to the agency, in the southern region, a cloudy atmosphere is expected with chances of morning rains over parts of Ogun and Lagos States.

    NiMet forecasts 3-day thunderstorm, rain from Wednesday

    The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted thunderstorms and rain from Wednesday to Friday across the country.

    NiMet’s weather outlook released on Tuesday in Abuja envisaged  early morning thunderstorms on Wednesday  over parts of Taraba, Kaduna and Adamawa  in the northern region.

    It anticipated thunderstorms with rain over parts of Kebbi, Taraba, Zamfara, Katsina, Kaduna, Kano, Sokoto, Gombe and Bauchi States later in the day.

    According to it, early morning thunderstorms are expected over parts of Benue, Kwara, Niger, the Federal Capital Territory and Nasarawa States in the North central region.

    “Later in the day, thunderstorms with rains are anticipated over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Nasarawa, Kwara, Kogi and Plateau States.

    ”In the southern region, a cloudy atmosphere is expected with chances of morning rain over parts of Ondo, Ekiti and Edo States.

    “Later in the day, isolated thunderstorms with rain are anticipated over parts of Imo, Enugu, Abia, Ebonyi, Anambra, Ondo, Oyo, Ogun, Ekiti, Edo, Delta, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa and Rivers  during the afternoon or evening hours,” it said.

    NiMet envisaged prospects of morning thunderstorms on Thursday over parts of Kaduna, Kebbi, Zamfara, Adamawa and Taraba  in the northern region.

    “Later in the day, thunderstorms with rain are anticipated over parts of Taraba, Adamawa, Kebbi, Kaduna, Zamfara, Kano, Gombe and Bauchi States.

    ”In the North-central region, patches of clouds with sunshine intervals are expected with prospects of early morning thunderstorms to affect parts of Niger, Nasarawa, Benue and the Federal Capital Territory.

    ”Later in the day, thunderstorms with rain are anticipated over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Nasarawa, Kwara, Kogi, Benue and Plateau States,” it  said.

    According to NiMet, morning thunderstorms are expected over parts of Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom and Cross River States in the southern region.

    It envisaged isolated thunderstorms with rain over most parts of Imo, Enugu, Abia, Ebonyi, Anambra, Imo, Ondo, Oyo, Ogun, Ekiti, Edo, Lagos, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Delta, Bayelsa and Rivers States later in the day.

    “On Friday, prospects of morning thunderstorms are expected over parts of Jigawa, Gombe, Bauchi, Adamawa and Taraba  in the northern region.

    ”Later in the day, thunderstorms with rains are anticipated over parts of Taraba, Adamawa, Kano, Kaduna and Bauchi States.

    ”In the North-central region, patches of clouds with sunshine intervals are expected with prospects of thunderstorms with rain over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa, Kwara and Niger,” it said.

    NiMet forecast thunderstorms over parts of Kwara, Benue and Kogi  in the  afternoon or evening hours.

    According to it, cloudy atmosphere is expected in the southern region with chances of morning rain over parts of Oyo, Enugu, Imo, Ebonyi, Akwa Ibom and Cross River.

    It predicted isolated thunderstorms with rain over most parts of the region later in the day.

    “Strong winds may precede the rains in areas where thunderstorms are likely to occur, public should take adequate precaution and ensure that loose objects are fastened to avoid collision.

    “Driving under heavy rain should be avoided.Disconnect electrical appliances from electrical sockets.

    “Stay away from tall trees to avoid impact from falling branches and broken trees.

    “Airline operators are advised to get airport-specific weather reports (flight documentation) from NiMet for effective planning in their operations.

    “Residents are advised to stay informed through weather updates from NiMet. Visit our website www.nimet.gov.ng,” it said.

    FEMD issues alert on expected rains in FCT

    The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD) has issued an alert on expected rainfall in parts of the territory and its neighbouring states from Sunday to Tuesday.

    The acting Director-General of the department, Mr Abdulrahman Mohammed, who raised the alarm in a statement in Abuja on Saturday, appealed to the residents to avoid driving into pools of water.

    Mohammed further advised the residents to always wait for the water levels to recede before driving during  downpours.

    He also appealed to them to take adequate precautions by switching off all electrical appliances during the rain.

    The FEMD boss encouraged the residents to always use  the 112 emergency toll free number in the event of an emergency.

    This is coming after the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) had predicted thunderstorms and rains from Sunday to Tuesday across the country.

    NiMet, in its weather outlook released on Saturday in Abuja, predicted a cloudy morning over the north-central region on Sunday.

    It added that thunderstorms with rains should be anticipated over parts of the FCT, Niger, Nasarawa State, Kwara, Kogi, Benue and Plateau.

    The agency also predicted morning thunderstorms with moderate rains over parts of Taraba and Adamawa in the Northern region.

    It also revealed the prospect of thunderstorms with rains over parts of Taraba, Adamawa, Katsina, Kano, Zamfara, Kaduna, Jigawa, Borno, Gombe and Bauchi States in the afternoon and evening hours.
