I used to believe my elder sister, Niniola was jealous of me

Popular Nigerian female singer, Teniola Apata, simply known as Teni, has revealed that she once belived that her elder sister and singer, Niniola, was jealous of her talent because of her harsh criticism of her voice.

Teni while granting interview in an episode of the Tea With Tay podcast, recalled rehearsing with her sisters during her childhood.

She said their eldest sister, Doyin told her that she had a melodic voice, but Niniola insisted that her voice was not “sweet.”

She said the latter’s harsh criticism made her think she was jealous of her.

Teni said, “My elder sister, the one that’s older than Nini [Niniola], Doyin, maybe she was deceiving because she didn’t want to hurt me; she used to tell me I have a melodic voice whenever I sing during my childhood. Nini, on the other hand, would tell me my voice isn’t sweet. So, I thought she was jealous of me.

“She [Niniola] called me aside and told me not to let Doyin deceive me. She now said, ‘You sing from your stomach.’ So, everytime Nini sings, I would watch her sing. So, I also started singing from my stomach.

“There was a time my school organised an event, I sang and the whole school stood up and was clapping for me. I said, ‘I’ve arrived.’ I went back home to tell Nini that I sang in school and everybody was clapping and she said I should sing what I sang. I sang it and Nini too clapped for me. I said, ‘Okay, we are up to something.’”

  • Dan Foster’s words were rough but smoothened me- Niniola

Dan Foster’s words were rough but smoothened me- Niniola

Sonorous singer, Niniola Apata has opened up on how late Nigerian-American broadcaster, Dan Foster was one of those who inspired her to take music serious.

The ‘Addicted’ crooner made this known during a recent episode of #WithChude where she reflected on her career trajectory.

TheNewsGuru recalls that Foster, who passed away in June last year, was a former judge of the Idols (West Africa TV series).

On how Foster’s constructive feedback alongside Dede Mabiaku, inspired her to flourish, she said: “When I heard about Dan Foster’s demise, it hurt me so much because I said I was going to look for him and hug him because his words were like sandpaper. They were rough but smoothened me,” she said.

“Dede helped with my confidence and helped me realise and maintain that the voice is there. He said ‘You have it, don’t let anyone tell you don’t have it; all you can do is work on it, harness it’. I told myself after West African Idol that I was going to work on myself and be so good that no-one will be able to question my craft.”

Asked about the importance of hard work, Niniola averred: “Hard work is very important, and it will never go in vain. Just be yourself, and the world will listen to you,” she added.

Niniola recently won the female category of ‘Best Vocal Performance’ at the 14th edition of The Headies.

  • Why I have lot of X-rated lyrics in my songs-Niniola

Why I have lot of X-rated lyrics in my songs-Niniola

Crowned queen of house music by her fans, Niniola has over the years metamorphosed into a prolific singer and performer.

Nini who has a love for deploying X-rated lyrics in some of her songs said that, the kind of liberation she has makes her tread that part. The ‘Addicted’ singer said, she cannot leave it to me to talk about women’s body.

The award winning sexy songtress in an encounter with Showbiz writer, Joey Akan said:”It’s because of the liberation that I have. First of all, I am from a polygamous family and I’m Yoruba and there’s nothing like one person is more superior to the other. Everyone is equal. So that freedom to be who you want to be started from my family, my immediate family. And also, the fact that women talk a lot about so many things. And laugh about so many things, and I’m like you know what? I’m going to put it in my music. And then you want that shock value, that when people hear it, they’re like ‘ehn?’ Like I said earlier, it’s about the lyrics but not really. It’s about the melodies, how it hits you. So when I’m singing, you don’t get the lyrics first. You don’t. It’s the melody. So you can sing something, use the same lyrics or similar lyrics and it won’t hit home like mine, because I’m dropping it musically. Let me just say, the shine is more on the music than the lyrics. But then the lyrics come, and then you get that shock wave. So yeah, that’s the formula.

How will it be an issue? It cannot be an issue. It cannot be an issue because it’s life. Why should I leave it to men to talk about women’s bodies and interactions? Let me tell it from another angle. Because you have people talking about these things. Why is it not acceptable for women to talk this way when in reality, we talk this way? So it’s a way of ‘that guy is singing ‘my body, your body’. And I’m telling you ‘it’s my body, I’d do however I want to.’ And because it’s dance music, dance music has a formula. It has to be catchy and interesting. There has to be something catchy about it so, yeah. If you want to listen to gospel music, you go to church”.
