2023: NNPP denies endorsing Bola Tinubu

The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in Osun has denied the claim that it has endorsed the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress(APC), Sen. Bola Tinubu.

The Caretaker Chairman of the party in the state, Alhaji Abdussalam Abdullateef, who made the rebuttal at a news conference on Saturday in Osogbo, urged Nigerians to disregard the claim.

Abdullateef said four members of the party, who purportedly endorsed the APC presidential candidate, were “on their own.”

According to him, the only presidential candidate known to the NNPP is Sen. Rabiu Kwankwaso, “who has all it takes to give our dear country a new lease of life come May 29, 2023 and beyond”.

“We in the Osun NNPP want to reaffirm our support for His Excellency, Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the Presidential Candidate of NNPP.

“He is the most qualified of all the presidential candidates in Nigeria, in terms of education, work experience, political maturity and closeness to the grassroots,” he said.

Abdullateef stated that some past leaders of NNPP in the state were in the habit of using the party to trade for personal interest, which he said led to the change of leadership of the party.

“It may interest the world to know that the leadership of NNPP at the National level has decided to put a stop to this betrayal habit, resulting in the change of the State leadership in Osun State.

“The after effect of the change was the show of shame by four candidates of the party, who purportedly endorsed another presidential candidate as witnessed.

“If candidates of a political party endorse the presidential candidate of another party while still holding on to the mandates of NNPP, their action did not come to us as a surprise.

“Once again, we outrightly dissociate Osun NNPP from people of unstable credentials and anti-party characters.

“As for the genuine members of the party in the state, we further affirm that all candidates of NNPP in Osun State are working towards success at the 2023 polls”, he said.

Four candidates of NNPP in the state in the 2023 elections had on Wednesday declared support for the presidential candidate of APC.

President of Senate Ahmad Lawan read the letter, announcing his official defection.

Shekarau in the letter said his defection and that of thousands of his supporters in Kano from NNPP to PDP, was to actualise their political aspirations in a party that accommodates them.

After the announcement, PDP senators led by the minority leader, Philip Aduda and the minority whip, Chukwuka Utazi embraced Shakarau for defecting to their party

Kwankwaso in Warri, inaugurates Delta South campaign office

The Presidential candidate of the New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP), Dr Rabiu Kwankwaso, has inaugurated the Delta South Senatorial candidate’s campaign office in Warri ahead of the 2023 general elections.

Kwankwaso who arrived in Warri on Saturday to inaugurate the campaign office, solicited support for retired Commodore Omatseye Nesiama, the party’s Delta South Senatorial candidate.

The NNPP presidential candidate noted that official campaign had not started.

He said that the large turnout of party faithful to welcome him in Warri attested to the popularity of Commodore Nesiama and the party.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Kwankwaso and his entourage were earlier received by Commodore Nesiama and other party faithful at the Osubi Airstrip in Okpe Local Government Area.

Before the arrival of Kwankwaso,  scores of party supporters had dumped their engagements for NNPP during a “Hope Walk” on Saturday.

The hope walk was organised by Nesiama’s Campaign Organisation as part of the activities lined up for the arrival of Kwankwaso and inaugurating the Delta South Senatorial office of Commodore Nesiama.

The movement began from McDermott Junction in Igbudu community and traversed Deco Junction, Okumagba Avenue,  Estate, Okere Market and terminated at the secretariat of the Nesiama’s campaign office at Odion Road.

The party faithful said they were tired of failed promises and that their “former parties were not carrying them along in the scheme of things.”

Addressing them, Nesiama urged the people to have their Permanent Voters Card (PVC), noting that the card was the tool for them to elect candidates of their choice in the forthcoming general elections.

While noting that elections were not a do- or- die contest, Nesiama stressed that the hope of the people had been rekindled with the presence of people like him in the race.

“The movement is to sensitise the people to the need for them to collect their PVC’s because without the card, you can not vote. In other words, you have forefeited your rights to decide on who you want.

“I encourage people to replicate the zeal they displayed during the voters registration in the collection of their PVCs. They should protect their vote and ensure it counts.

“The people of Delta South have moved out to show that they love the Commodore of hope, they love the NNPP coming with new possibilities for them.

“That is the joyful thing. I am elated. I am overwhelmed and I thank God for that opportunity and for the impetus to do more.

“It’s obvious with the turn out of people that nobody was hired. Nobody was bought. People came out enmasse to support this movement,” Nesiama said.

  • 2023: 9,800 supporters dump PDP, NNPP for APC in Sokoto

2023: 9,800 supporters dump PDP, NNPP for APC in Sokoto

Over 9,800 supporters of the PDP and NNPP in Goronyo local government area have dumped their parties for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

This is contained in a statement issued on Sunday in Sokoto by Bashar Abubakar, Special Assistant on New Media to APC leader in the state, Sen. Aliyu Wamakko (APC-Sokoto North).

Abubakar said that the defectors included NNPP State House of Assembly candidate in the area, Alhaji Maniru Malami, alongside hundreds of his supporters.

Abubakar said that Malami dumped the party alongside all his local government and 11 ward executive committee members.

The new entrants into the APC also included an ex-State House of Assembly aspirant, Alhaji Shehu Dan-Tsamaye and the incumbent Financial Secretary, Alhaji Hamza ‘Yar-Dole.

Others were the Chairman, Forum of wards Chairmen in the area, Alhaji Amadu Dan-Kansila and another PDP bigwig, Alhaji Hamisu Mai-Alewa.

Abubakar said that they were received into the fold of the APC by the party’s Gubernatorial candidate for the 2023 General Elections, Alhaji Ahmed Aliyu.

Aliyu said that the mass exodus into the APC was a sign of the increasing acceptability of the party.

Aliyu said,” PDP in the state has failed to redeem all the promises it had made to the people of the state since 2019.”

The state Chairman of the party, Alhaji Isa Sadiq-Achida pledged to treat the defectors equally with the older members of the party.

Sadiq-Achida said,”we are hopeful that APC will emerge victorious during the forthcoming general polls at all levels.”

APC Zonal Secretary, North West, Alhaji Bello Goronyo and it’s Senatorial candidate for Sokoto East, Alhaji Ibrahim Lamido, said the party at the national level was strategising towards successful campaigns in the country.

APC Chairman in Goronyo Local Government, Alhaji Kabiru Sarkin-Fulani lauded the defectors for “ taking the right decision, at the right time.”

A cross section of the defectors cited the alleged failure of the PDP-led state government to deliver the dividends of democracy to the people of the state as one of their reasons for dumping it.

  • ANALYSIS: 2023: Who will NNPP’s Kwankwaso forge an alliance with?

ANALYSIS: 2023: Who will NNPP’s Kwankwaso forge an alliance with?

The New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) prides itself as “the beautiful bride in the North” and hopes to expand its reach to all parts of the country and the diaspora, as part of strategies toward the 2023 general elections. In recent months many political bigwigs from the All Progressive Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have joined the NNPP to form what many regard as a third force.

A major selling point for the party is the emergence of a former governor of Kano state Rabiu Kwankwaso, as its presidential candidate. Kwankwaso, a former House of Representatives member, senator, and minister enjoys immense popularity and support in Nigeria’s north, particularly Kano state where he is rated as one of the best governors the state has produced, owing to the infrastructural development and scholarship programme for students which he implemented during his tenure.

Prominent politicians who have registered with the NNPP include another former governor of Kano state Ibrahim Shekerau, a former minister of youth and sports, Solomon Dalung, President Muhammadu Buhari’s estranged right-hand man Buba Galadima, Chief of Staff to the current Governor of Kano state Abdullahi Ganduje, Ali Makoda, deputy speaker of the State House of Assembly Zubairu Hamza, the House of Representatives member representing Tofa/Dawakin Tofa/Rimin Gado, Tijjani Jobe, and the member representing Dambatta/Makoda Federal Constituency, Badamasi Ayuba among others.

National Chairman of the NNPP Rufai Ahmed Alkali, said his party was repositioning itself to provide an alternative platform that will rescue the nation from the stranglehold of the two main political parties APC and PDP, and deliver the gains of good governance including tackling insecurity, restoring the value of the Naira, creating job opportunities, promoting gender equality in government appointments, reviving moribund industries, etc.

“Let me once more assure Nigerians that unlike what is happening now, the NNPP administration would give every Nigerian a sense of belonging as nobody would be treated as a second-class citizen or discriminated or marginalized on the basis of tribe, religion or sex,” Alkali said.

NNPP’s quest to build a formidable team

Despite welcoming a vast array of members into the party within the last three months, the NNPP has remained committed to forming new alliances, especially outside of the north to secure victory at the polls in 2023. The party has been in the spotlight for months over its attempts to negotiate a strategic merger that can oust the ruling party.

The NNPP first considered an alliance with the Labour Party (LP) in June where Kwankwaso and the Presidential candidate for LP Peter Obi were to fly a joint ticket, with one of them stepping down their ambition to serve as vice for the other. Both men had been members of the PDP but defected to pursue the same ambition – to run for president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. While Kwankwaso joined the NNPP in March, Obi waited two months before pitching his tent with the LP in May.

Kwankwaso has his foothold in the north, but Obi’s traction is among youths in the south and a merger of this sort some analysts said, would unsettle even the ruling APC. But after weeks of discussions through a committee that was set up, the anticipated marriage between both parties failed to happen against permutations and public expectations.

“From the discussion with Labour Party, the main issue was who becomes the president if the parties merge. At the end of the day, some of our representatives thought that there should be a criteria in terms of age, qualification, offices held, performance, and so on,” Kwankwaso said. Obi, on the other hand, said he would not be constrained by ethnic sentiments to settle for vice president and believes that the elections should be based purely on the merit of his campaign promises and proven track record as a former governor of Anambra state.

Speculations also emerged that the NNPP was now considering an alliance with the PDP, but the spokesperson of Kwankwaso’s Presidential Campaign Organisation Ladipo Johnson, dispelled the rumours, insisting that the party’s presidential flag bearer would not step down his ambition for the opposition’s candidate Atiku Abubakar.

Kwankwaso, who is making his second attempt to become Nigeria’s president, had tried unsuccessfully to clinch the PDP’s ticket in 2018 but lost to Abubakar who is yet again the party’s flag bearer. The presidential campaign spokesperson stressed that Kwankwaso is in the race to win and would contest the 2023 presidential election to the end as he joined the race of his convictions that he would make the desired change in Nigeria.

“I do not know how and why people come up with these assertions and speculations. Kwankwaso cannot and will not step down for anyone. Kwankwaso is not in the race to negotiate. He has the capacity, track record for competence and political will to lead Nigeria to greater heights. Our candidate has no reason to step down. His path to victory and chances are very high. Competitive yes but his chances are very high considering his acceptance nationwide as a man of integrity,” he reiterated.

There were also reports that Kwankwaso had stated during an interview with Arise TV that he will be willing to throw his weight behind the presidential candidate of the APC Bola Tinubu if he sensed he was unable to win the election. But his aide Muyi Fatosa said nothing could be farther from the truth.

“For the records and avoidance of doubt, in the interview with Dr. Reuben Abati of Arise TV where Dr. Reuben Abati asked Sen. Kwankwanso of his opinion about Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso stated clearly in his response that “Bola Tinubu is my friend of many years, if I had not contested, I would have recommended him. I do not play politics of bitterness. We are both in the presidential race but I am a better candidate.”

“It is unfortunate to see many people taking the above statement to mean an endorsement of Tinubu and promoting such misconstrued message on the media. The Campaign Organisation strongly described as untrue the report that HE, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has in any way endorsed Bola Tinubu,” Fatosa said in a statement.

The NNPP said it will continue with its nationwide consultations which have so far been receiving positive feedback and while analysts say the party will have no chance without securing a strong alliance with the west, it is not clear which direction the party will swing, with just about two weeks before the official flag off of campaigns.

BREAKING: Kwankwaso speaks about stepping down for Atiku, Tinubu

Mr. Ladipo Johnson, the spokesperson of the Sen. Rabiu Kwankwaso Presidential Campaign organisation, has dispelled speculations that the candidate is considering backing other candidates.

Johnson was reacting to speculations on social media that the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) presidential candidate, Kwankwaso, was considering stepping down for either the PDP presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar or the APC candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

In a statement in Lagos on Sunday, Johnson said: “Kwankwaso is in the race to win.

“I do not know how and why people come up with these assertions and speculations. Kwankwaso cannot and will not step down for anyone.”

He said that Kwankwaso would contest the 2023 presidential election to the end as he joined the race of his convictions that he would make the desired change in Nigeria.

“Kwankwaso is not in the race to negotiate. He has the capacity, track record for competence and the political will to lead Nigeria to greater heights.

“Our candidate has no reason to step down. His path to victory and chances are very high. Competitive yes but his chances are very high considering his acceptance nationwide as a man of integrity.”

He said that the party was ready for the campaigns and would transverse the entire country to convince Nigerians and to explain the reasons why they should support the NNPP.

Johnson said it was time for Nigerians to take what they read on social media with a pinch of salt, stating that as campaigns drew nearer, a lot of lies would be unleashed to confuse Nigerians.

“I advice we check all information and be sure its truth before believing them.

“There will be a lot of campaign of calumny against politicians that are more acceptable to the people but we are ready to put such campaigners to shame.”

He said that the NNPP as a party has a clear vision of its intentions for Nigerians and would not be dragged into unnecessary criticisms but would face the task of convincing Nigerians of the fresh ideas it would be bringing on board if elected.

  • 2023: NNPP drags INEC to court, seeks disqualification of APC candidates in Kaduna

2023: NNPP drags INEC to court, seeks disqualification of APC candidates in Kaduna

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has dragged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) before Justice Hadiza Shagari of a Federal High Court sitting in Kaduna.

The party is challenging the list of the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidates for Governorship and State Assembly seats published by INEC on July 22, for the General Election.

The NNPP alleged that the candidates did not emerge through a legal process or due process as prescribed by the Electoral Act and other extant laws.

The party, is therefore, asking the court to compel INEC to do the right thing by removing the candidates of the APC from the list of eligible candidates for the 2023 General Elections in Kaduna State.

The case which came up for mention in Kaduna on Friday, was adjourned to Sept. 15 for hearing.

Justice Hadiza explained that the case was adjourned on grounds that all the parties were yet to be served by INEC the critical documents and processes it filed to the court.

The NNPP Lead counsel, Wole Agunbiade, SAN, had told the court that he was yet to be served by INEC.

On his part, APC Lead Counsel, Sule Shuaibu said he was served, adding however, that he needed more time to process all the documents and thereafter appealed for time to file his motions.

Counsel to INEC, Halima Gachi, had earlier told the court that she was not certain that all the parties were served, explaining that she took over the case from her colleague in the office.

Kaduna: NNPP guber candidate unveils running mate

The Kaduna State governorship candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Sen. Suleiman Hunkuyi, has unveiled Mr Sani Mazawaje as his running mate in the 2023 elections.

Unveiling his running mate on Friday at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna, Hunkuyi assured of the readiness of the party to strictly govern by justice, fair play and equity if given the mandate to lead the affairs of the state.

He also said that every section of the state would be carried along to ensure peaceful coexistence.

He said: “The state is sharply divided on religion and section, the essence of democracy by the people has been defeated in the state.

“Kaduna State needs a leader with a strong political will to ensure inclusiveness to quickly give the people hope of togetherness and doing things as expected in an ideal society.

“Presently as it is, the citizens of the state are in dire need of a leader that will unite and ensure equality in all spheres of governance to enable the people work together as a family for the overall development of the state.”

He also decried the level of insecurity in the state, saying it had caused the loss of lives and property at an unimaginable proportion.

He, therefore, urged the people to vote wisely in the coming general elections.

In his remarks, Mazawaje said that the forthcoming elections provided Nigerians especially the citizens of Kaduna State another opportunity to vote in their large numbers for credible leaders.

“The 2023 general elections provide eligible voters to vote in credible leaders into the affairs of governance to correct so many things that have gone wrong in Kaduna State and the country at large,” he said.

  • Pains of Niger Delta run through my veins – NNPP Senatorial candidate

Pains of Niger Delta run through my veins – NNPP Senatorial candidate

Candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) for Delta South Senatorial District for the 2023 elections, Commodore Omatseye Nesiama (rtd) has said the pains of the Niger Delta region run through his veins.

Nesiama, who said this during a consultative visit to the President of the Ijaw National Congress (INC), Professor Benjamin Okaba in Bomadi on Tuesday, lamented that the development of the Delta South Senatorial District is not commensurate with the resources domiciled in the district.

He ascribed this to the inabilities to influence positive developments from the centre to the district, while also alluding to the fact that the people have resorted themselves to fate with the belief that they cannot change the tide to their favour.

“The truth is that the Delta South Senatorial District, despite the resources, is still very poor when compared to some other senatorial districts in the country. Why it is so is not farfetched. There are certain things that have been in place for a while, and we have started growing used to those things being that way. We are made to believe that it is impossible for us to make changes that will better our well-being. But I dare say today that it is possible for us to get up and go higher,” Nesiama said.

The NNPP candidate who further said that “the pains of the Niger Delta run through my veins” appealed to the INC President to help him carry the message of hope in the language the people understand and that all hope is not lost as his candidacy, which is running with the slogan “It Is Possible,” is focused on a quality representation that is leveraged on the many years of his expertise and experience for the general benefit of the district.

In his remarks, Professor Okaba commended Nesiama for exhibiting competence and for his vision of quality representation in his drive to represent the people of the oil-rich Delta South Senatorial District at the Red Chambers come 2023.

Okaba noted that one of the major problems, among others facing the country is poor leadership-cum-representation. He promised to set up political machinery in a couple of weeks to engage political contestants to “let us know what they want to provide for the Ijaw Nation”.

Presented with the manifesto of the NNPP’s candidate, the INC President noted that though the country’s constitution is skewed to favour a section of the country, the issue of the south is worsened by those who offer poor representation in the centre.

“We have people who are lily-livered, we have people who are ignoramus going there to serve the interest of the people worsening the situation. Even if we don’t have the majority, we should have the say and be heard. Look at Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State giving quality representation to the Niger Delta on issues because he has the mental capacity, the experience and all,” Okaba said.

Speaking further he added: “I have accessed you; you have displayed content and you have displayed competence. You have the dexterity to move on, the assurance I want to give to you is that we are taking very serious note of you and what you represent. We have taken serious consideration of the quality representation you are, and we are going to provide another platform where you will address the wider section of the Ijaw people of Niger Delta”.

2023 Elections: Thugs attack Rabiu Kwankwaso in Kogi state

The presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, Dr. Rabiu Kwankwaso was pelted with sachet and bottled water by hoodlums and louts in Kogi state on Wednesday.

The presidential candidate of the NNPP had traveled to Lokoja the state capital to launch the party’s secretariats and his campaign office in the state before being pelted with sachet water.

On getting to a popular hotel where he was meant to address his supporters, suspected hoodlums invaded the venue and started throwing sachets of water at the candidate.

Kwankwaso had earlier visited Ogbonicha, the country home of late Abubakar Audu, where a similar scenario played out.

The political thugs accused him of masquerading under the canopy of a former governor in the state to woo some of the All Progressive Congress (APC) supporters in the state.

However, Kwankwaso’s media aide, Musa Yunusa, confirmed the incident and described the action as normal in the political terrain, saying the Kogi is the home of the  NNPP presidential candidate.
