Gov Ganduje isolated as Sen Ibrahim Shekarau dumps APC for NNPP

Kano Central Senstor, Ibrahim Shekarau, has resigned his membership of the All Progressives Congress and joined the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) thereby isolating the  state Governor, Ibrahim Ganduje.

With his defection, the power equation has shifted  in the state as a combination of Shekarau and Musa Kwankwaso will make it difficult for APC to retain power in the state.

The lawmaker in a defection letter read during plenary by the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, informed the chamber that his decision to quit the ruling party was due to marginalization and lack of internal democracy in the Kano Chapter of the APC.

The full text of the letter reads, “I kindly write to formally notify you of my resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC), and declaration for the New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP).

“My resignation from the APC was born out of the marginalization of all major critical stakeholders, and lack of internal democracy, in the Kano State chapter of the APC, plus the total absence of the principle of inclusiveness in the affairs of the Party and its Government at all levels in the State.

“All efforts to resolve the long protracted crisis in the State, in the last two years, including the involvement of the national Headquarters of the APC, failed due to the non-cooperation of the Kano State Governor and party leadership in the State.

“Consequently, after due consultation with like-minds and millions of our supporters in the State, we decided to withdraw our membership of the APC and moved to the New Nigeria People’s Party.

“Accept, please, my fraternal goodwill and continued cooperation at all times.”

  • Rabiu Kwankwaso, Peter Obi joint ticket: Committee submits report

The joint panel set up by the Labour Party and the New Nigeria People’s Party to work out an alliance between Rabiu  Musa Kwankwaso and Mr Peter Obi has submitted its report for consideration.

Kwankwaso, a former Kano State governor and presidential candidate of the NNPP, is said to have strong followership in the North with his Kwankwasiyya movement, while Obi, a former Anambra State governor and LP presidential candidate, is having an increasing support base among youths in the southern part of the country, Middlebelt and Abuja; and in the social media.

While it is no longer possible for political parties to merge, in line with Section 81 (2) of the Electoral Act, both presidential candidates are working on a joint ticket with the hope of defeating the ruling All Progressives Congress, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party and others in the February 25, 2023 presidential election.

The Section 81 (2) reads, “Political parties intending to merge shall each give to the commission nine months’ notice of their intention to do so before a general election.” Already, the 2023 general elections will commence on February 25, which is less than nine months away.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) recalls that Kwankwaso, in an interview about a week ago, confirmed that a committee was set up to work on the alliance and that conversation was ongoing. He said, “We are in talks with Peter Obi and a committee is working to look into how to form a merger between us.

“The merger is important because as you can see, both the ruling All Progressives Congress and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party did not pick their running mates from the South-East.”

As the deadline for the substitution of candidates and running mates for the presidential and National Assembly candidates draws near, there is mounting anxiety among the supporters of the two candidates over the progress made in the alliance talks.

The running mate to Obi and director-general of his campaign organisation, Dr Doyin Okupe, confirmed that the panel had concluded its sitting and ongoing talks on the way forward.

Okupe said, “A committee was set up before now and the committee has completed its work. There have been informal meetings and third-party stakeholders interventions and we have had structured official meetings too.

“In all, we came to two agreements; one is that we are going to work together as political parties in order to achieve this change that we all desire. What we did not agree upon is who would be the president and who would be the vice-president. We didn’t agree on that. But we left it open.”

Asked if the parties would agree on the issue before the deadline for political parties to submit the names of their final running mates, Okupe said, “We are aware of the deadline, and we are working on it. When we adjourned our last meeting, we adjourned sine die.

:So, if there is a change, we will reconvene. But we are moving on. There is no problem. We have agreed to work together to create a platform for a national coalition, so that objective is still in place.”

Also, the National Chairman, NNPP, Prof Rufai Alkali, hinted that the party was engaging with the people and getting support and solidarity from many places.

When asked who would become the candidate and running mate between Kwankwaso and Obi, Alkali said, “Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso is a seasoned politician and he knows the country very well. Certain decisions have to be taken at the appropriate time in a way and manner that would bring more strength and credibility to this journey.”

Asked if a decision had been reached on it, he said, “When we do, you will be among the first to know. No decision yet.”

  • Just In: Two Senators abandon APC and PDP for Labour Party, NNPP

Two serving Senators on Wednesday announced their defection from Peoples Democratic Party and All Progressives Congress.

Senator Francis Onyewusi (Imo East) who is a first-timer in the Senate, was a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and he defected to Labour Party (LP). His counterpart in Bauchi, Haliru Dauda Jika (Bauchi Central) was a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and he defected to the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

Their letters of defection were read on the floor by the Senate President.

The defected Senators cited injustice and inequity in their former political parties that made them fail the primary elections.

TheNewsGuru.com, recalls barely 24hours ago three serving Senators had tendered their resignation from the two major parties in Nigeria, the PDP and APC.

  • Just In: We are in serious talk with Peter Obi, Kwankwaso confirms, speaks on President, VP allocation

The Presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party and national leader of the Kwankwasiya movement, Rabiu Kwankwaso has confirmed that NNPP is in serious talk with Peter Obi on the possibility of a merger.

The former Kano State Governor confirmed this in an interview with BBC Hausa.

There have been speculations that the NNPP and LP are working towards a third force against the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

While some party insiders have affirmed the possible political shifts, some have described the viral reports as mere speculations.

However, Kwankwaso in a barely three minutes video clip shared by BBC Hausa on Saturday morning, confirmed he is privately deliberating with Obi over the possible merger.

Kwankwaso had earlier revealed that a southern Christian would be picked as his running mate for the 2023 election.

Speaking ahead of the 2023 elections during the interview with BBC Hausa, Kwankwaso said he is truly in talks with Peter Obi. He said consultations are ongoing in his camp and he believes the same is happening with the Labour Party.

The NNPP leader said it is worthy to note that both APC and PDP did not consider a presidential candidate or vice president from the South East, hence it would be okay if both NNPP and Labour Party could make a move in that direction.

Translation: “Truly we are in talk with him [Peter Obi]. Consultations committee are working towards a merger. I understand Obi’s camp is also making consultation about the possible merger for the 2023 election.

“If you look closely, both the APC and PDP did pick their presidential candidate or vice-presidential slot from the South-East

Speaking about who will take the presidential and VP slot between him and Obi, Kwankwaso said:

“For the merger, there would be a consideration on who is the senior and who is junior amongst us then the appropriate slot would be accorded to the rightful candidate while the other would be given the VP slot.”

He noted that though the two camps have submitted names of their running mate, the names submitted are just a camouflage for now.

The spokesman of LP, Dr Yinusa Tanko had confirmed to TheNewsGuru com, (TNG) on Wednesday that the Obi camp was having serious consultation with NNPP.

NNPP celebrates people who sacrificed their lives to enthrone democracy

The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has paid tribute to the heroes and heroines of Nigeria’s democracy, particularly those who sacrificed their lives in the struggle to enthrone democracy in the country.

The party paid the tribute in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr Agbo Major, in Abuja on Sunday.

Major saluted Nigerians on the occasion of the occasion of 2022 Democracy Day.

He said that Nigeria was irrevocably placed on the path of democratic governance after years of military dictatorship, civil war and political upheavals that threatened the nation’s corporate existence.

He, however, said that the 2022 Democracy Day called for sober reflection, prayers and collective action to terminate social injustice.

He said that it also called for collective efforts to end marginalisation, terrorism, insurgency, militancy, kidnapping, hunger, unemployment, poor infrastructure and resolution of issues that led to the elongated ASUU strike.

He, however, said that the forthcoming general election provided citizens an opportunity to take their corporate destiny into their hands and massive vote for a new, better, greater and prosperous Nigeria, whoch he said NNPP symbolised.

“It is time for action. All eligible voters should quickly go and register and obtain their permanent voter cards, ensure they vote and their votes count in the overall result as power belongs to the people.

“This is the only way to restore the nation’s unity, greatness, prosperity and dignity in the comity of nations.

“We are going to improve the aviation industry to make it more effective and affordable so that many people as possible can travel either by road by water or by air in this country,” he said.

He urged all party members and supporters to register and get their Permanent Voter Cards before the suspension of registration by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) by June 30, to enable them vote in 2023 general elections.

Peller, while fielding questions from  some of his supporters after the visit, denied plans to defect, he told them his visit wasn’t politically related.

He said it was a private visit, saying Olopoeyan and his late father, Professor Peller, had a very good relationship and that he also had been relating well with his father’s ally.
