2027: Kwankwaso currently has no platform to run against Tinubu – NNPP

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) says its 2023 presidential candidate, Sen. Rabiu Kwankwaso do not have its platform for contest against President Bola Tinubu and or  any other  presidential  candidate at the moment in 2027.

The NNPP  National Chairman,  Dr Agbo Major made this known in a statement  on Saturday.

Major was speaking on the backdrop of claims by Elder Buba Galadima that Kwankwaso will stay and run for presidency on the NNPP platform.

Galadima, who claimed that there is no evidence that Kwankwaso is joining the All Progressives Congress as speculated, said they would “strategically stay in the NNPP until the whistle is blown for 2027  politics”  urging Nigerians to support Kwankwaso to take over as president.

Agbo stated that the NNPP platform is closed to Kwankwaso and Galadima, who had long been expelled from its fold for anti party activities.

‘The NNPP had long expelled Kwankwaso and Galadima and so,  they no longer speak for us nor can they use our platform for any political contest.

“Our Memorandum of Understanding with the Kwankwasiya Movement, led by Kwankwaso ended shortly after the 2023 presidential election.

“We cannot even allow Kwankwaso for whatever reason to return on the NNPP fold because of the problems and internal wranglings he created for us.

“Kwankwaso  led us into unnecessary litigations and even changed our party logo to the Kwankwasiya logo, all in an attempt to hijack the leadership of the party.

“It was the Court’s interventions that led to INEC changing back to our Logo that they submitted after a Kangaroo convention in Abuja,” he said.

He said that Kwankwaso must be counting on another free ticket like he got for the 2023 presidential election but it would not happen again.

“Certainly, Kwankwaso  can never join any political party where he will not have the chance of leadership.

“Kwankwaso and his group remain expelled and we will not readmit them because they betrayed our trust massively.

“He does not have the pedigree to match President Tinubu in any contest and so his ambition is dead on arrival,” he said.

The NNPP chairman insisted that though it is Kwankwaso’s right as a Nigerian to seek to contest for any office, he should do so without getting the party involved in any of his antagonisms against the President.

He disclosed that the NNPP is being approached by some intending aspirants and  shall dwell on that at the appropriate time.

“Whoever will emerge as the NNPP 2027 presidential candidate will do so, following due process and constitutionality.

“We will no longer handover our ticket on a platter of gold, and definitely not to someone who betrayed our trust and is no longer on the party,” Major  added.

He urged Nigerians to disregard utterances against the Presidency and APC by Kwankwaso and his group,  claiming they are speaking  for the  NNPP.

“The NNPP as a party believes in constructive criticisms of issues and not against personalities or other political parties. We advise Kwankwaso to float his own party and use it for his own agenda.

“NNPP has moved on and can’t be dragged into unnecessary controversies again,” he added.

  • Democracy: Ongoing realignments, defections not out of place – NNPP

Democracy: Ongoing realignments, defections not out of place – NNPP

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has said it is utterly out of place to consider ongoing political realignments and defections as an attempt by the Federal Government to make Nigeria a one party state.

Dr Boniface Aniebonam, Founder and Chairman, Board of Trustees of the NNPP, made the assertion in his June 12 2025 Democracy Day message on Thursday in Lagos.

Recall President Bola Tinubu while addressing the Joint Session of the National Assembly to mark the June 12 Democracy Day, said that Nigeria is not sliding into a one party as rumoured.

Tinubu said: “To those who ring the alarm that the APC is intent on a one-party state, I offer you a most personal promise, while your alarm may be as a result of your panic, it rings in error.”

According to the President, at no time in the past, nor any instance in the present, and at no future juncture shall I view the notion of a one-party state as good for Nigeria.

Aniebonam noted that in every democracy, the power to associate remains sacred and even enshrined in the Nigerian constitution.

“As we approach 2027, Nigerians have the democratic right to move across political parties, it’s only incumbent on political parties to do more to plug holes created by the exit of such members.

”Any attempt to stop these movements is clearly an infringement on the rights to association and free movement which democratic principles clearly uphold.

“The fear of Nigeria’s democracy drifting into a one party system does not arise, as individuals moving from one party to another do not mean a realignment of registered political parties with similar ideology , therefore, movement of individual politicians are inconsequential to the subject matter.

“Political elites who have access to government should reach out to government through direct engagement and or memo on the best way to reinvent Nigeria than playing to the gallery through media interventions.”

The NNPP scribe urged prayers and support for the Federal Government.

He said that though it is not yet uhuru, Nigeria has made tremendous progress as a nation, looking at the journey so far and uninterrupted democratic rule.

“What temporarily divides us as a people are  elections and political elites, once it’s over, we are expected to unite in the interest of the people in order to enjoy the full gains and dividends of democracy.

“We,  therefore, urge all well meaning lovers of democracy to lay down their political differences , embrace unity and responsible partnership with the government.

“We call for a united Nigeria, a united people that are determined to sustain the development of our dear country.

“We must use this celebration as a moment to reflect on our journey so far, and to what extent we have tapped into our religious, cultural and ethnic diversities going forward.”

While praying for an end to insecurity leading to incessant loss of  lives, Aniebonam urged the government to do more in securing the lives and property of innocent and tax paying citizens.

”The government must be decisive to halt ongoing senseless killings in many parts of Nigeria, including Plateau, Benue, Niger, Zamfara, Borno and several other states  and restore sanity for economic activities to thrive optimally.

“Tinubu is known for taking tough decisions and should, therefore, activate all state coercive forces to stop elements and sponsors of insecurity in Nigeria.”

According to him, the President and his cabinet have done well by showing strong leadership, judging from where the administration began.

“However, NNPP believes that it is time for Nigerians to participate fully in building a new Nigeria of our dreams, carrying long list of complaints cannot help other than responsible partnership with the government.

”All tiers of government, federal, state and local councils as well as Nigerians must ensure the survival of our democracy by adhering strictly to the rule of law and constitutionality.

“All instruments of democracy must be protected, activated and made to function optimally. Yes, we can do it  through participation and mass movement against the evils of the society as we keep this conversation going , God bless everyone,” Aniebonam added.

The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has refuted recent media claims suggesting that its national leader, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, is considering a political alliance with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement released on Saturday in Abuja by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, the NNPP described the reports as false and the handiwork of mischief-makers.

The party made it clear that the alleged press release did not come from Kwankwaso, adding that the former Kano governor has deliberately chosen not to comment on current political matters and will maintain that position for the time being.

The NNPP urged the public to disregard unofficial reports and instead rely on verified information from Kwankwaso’s official channels and the party’s authorised platforms, cautioning against being misled by fabricated statements.

He ,however, said that the date for the primaries had not been fixed , assuring that it would hold within the window provided by the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC)

He added: “We are fully involved and participating in the local government election in Lagos.

NNPP reacts over defection of 2024 governorship candidate

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in Ondo State says its governorship candidate in the state’s 2024 election, Olugbenga Edema, did not utilise the opportunities offered by the party.

Pastor Peter Olagookun, NNPP state Chairman, said this on Sunday in a telephone interview, while reacting to Edema’s resignation from the party.

Edema, on Sunday, resigned from NNPP, citing internal crisis in the party coupled with its ‘unserious attitude’ in achieving success.

“The leadership of the party in Edema’s local government is yet to brief me officially, but don’t forget that he is under suspension, and if he decides to leave the party, we wish him well.

“NNPP has tried by giving him the governorship ticket for the 2024 election, even though he did not use it very well nor show capacity, it has added to his political profile,” he told NAN.

Ondo NNPP gov’ship candidate dumps party

Mr Olugbenga Edema, the candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in the Nov. 16, 2024 governorship election in Ondo State, has resigned from the party.

Edema’s resignation letter addressed to the NNPP chairman in Mahin Ward 11, in Ilaje Local Government of the state, was made available to newsmen on Sunday in Okitipupa.

He lamented the internal crisis in the party which he said was not good for any serious party ready to win elections.

Edema, in the letter dated May 9, 2025, also said that the activities of party leadership negates the ethics of political parties, and as such responsible for his resignation from the party.

According to him, since joining the party in June 2024, the party has being characterised with internal wranglings and rancour that have stunted its growth.

“This is not healthy for any serious-minded party that intends to win elections, which is the major objective of all political parties.

“Furthermore, the activities of the leadership of the party negates the ethics of political parties; which is to form Government at various levels,” he said.

Edema, a former Chairman, Ondo Stare Oil Producing Areas Commission (OSOPDEC) also expressed displeasure over the alleged treacherous attitudes of the NNPP leadership in the state, which he said frustrated him over the withdrawal of his case in the court in favour of opposition party.

“Since my over 35 years in active political party participation, I have never seen a political party with a leadership so treacherous to the extent of frustrating its candidate by withdrawing a legitimate case in court in favour of an opposing party against its candidate.

“It is apparent that the objective of the party is radically different from the above stated objectives of any serious-minded political party.

“From the foregoing, it is obvious that I am not on the same page with the leadership of the party as to what a party’s objectives and values should be.

“By this letter therefore, I hereby cease to be a member of the New Nigeria People’s Party with effect from today, no doubt, lessons have been learnt,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Edema did not indicate the new party he would join after dumping the NNPP.

NAN reports that Edema, a former governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC), defected to the NNPP, after Gov. Lucky Aiyedatiwa emerged winner of the APC governorship primary.

Kano senator dumps NNPP to join APC

The Senator representing Kano South Senatorial District under the platform of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) Sen. Kawu Sumaila has defected from the party to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio read the letter of the lawmaker’s defection at plenary on Wednesday.

According to Sumaila in his letter his decision to leave the NNPP is anchored on compelling and undeniable developments within the party, which have rendered the party severely divided and dysfunctional.

The letter is titled ”Notification of defection from the New Nigeria People’s Party, (NNPP,) to the All Progressive Congress (APC).

”Pursuant to section 68, subsection 1 of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, as amended, I write to the Senate President on behalf of the Senate.

“I write to formally notify the Senate through your esteemed office of my defection from the NNPP to the APC, the largest party in Africa.

“My decision to bid goodbye to the NNPP is anchored on compelling and undeniable developments within the party, which have rendered the party severely divided and dysfunctional.

“Over the past months, I have observed a growing number of litigations that have practically torn the party apart and left its structure fractured.

“All of which clearly centered on issues of party disunity, functional leadership, and the legitimacy of its operations.

“These legal battles have not only eroded internal cohesion but have created parallel and conflicting authorities within the party,” he wrote.

The lawmaker added that a further manifestation of the division was the existence of multiple factions each with its own distinct party logo.

This, he noted underscored the depth of the division and reflected a clear and public splintering of the party’s identity in both form and substance, as the party was divided in form and substance.

“Therefore, in the spirit of democratic accountability and in line with my constitutional right, I have moved to APC , a national platform, an international platform, which I believe will better support my legislative responsibilities and aspirations of the good people of my senatorial district,” he said.

NNPP reacts over reports on Kwankwaso’s defection

The New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) in Kano State has denied reports that Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso is planning to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Chairman of the party in the state, Alhaji Hashimu Dungurawa, said this while briefing newsmen on Friday in Kano.

Dungurawa said that Kwankwaso did not need to consult anyone before making any political decision, but emphasised that there were no plans for defection.

“We have no business with APC, and do not have any intention to defect,” Dungurawa said, dismissing the rumours as mere mischief.

He described the speculation as baseless and motivated by desperation.

He expressed confidence that the NNPP administration in Kano State is taking shape and restoring law and order in the area.

Chairman of APC in Kano State was quoted by the media as saying that the party’s door was open to Kwankwaso and other Nigerians who wished to defect.

APC has no role in our internal issues- NNPP to El’Rufai

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP),  says allegations by former governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El’Rufai that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) caused its crisis is false and condemnable.

The party spoke on the backdrop of the recent allegations by El’Rufai, that the crises in PDP, Labour Party and NNPP were caused and fueled by the APC.

The former Kaduna state governor had alleged that the APC was behind the internal crises rocking the opposition parties.

In a viral video on X on Tuesday, El-Rufai claimed that President Bola Tinubu’s administration was deliberately sponsoring disputes within these parties to weaken their leadership.

In a statement in Lagos on Wednesday, NNPP’s National Chairman, Dr Agbo Major said the party was compelled to respond to El’Rufai because his utterances linking the NNPP challenges to the APC were misguided .

“El’Rufai’s assertions were inaccurate information he may have gathered from enemies of NNPP’s internal democratic processes.”

Major pointed out that the crisis in NNPP which had been resolved, was as a result of the inordinate ambition of some members in total disregard to agreements and party rules and regulations.

”The genesis of the crisis in NNPP erupted shortly after the 2023 general elections as a result of termination of a Memorandum of Understanding that struck a temporary union, between the NNPP, The National Movement (TNM) and the Kwankwassiya Movement.

“The genesis and progress of the disagreement has been vigorously put there in the open, using all media platforms since 2023.

“If the ordinary and uneducated Nigerians are familiar with the facts about the raging crisis,  then it’s disappointing for El’rufai to come to the open media to make such unguarded and unacceptable statement.

“Nigerians are no longer to be deceived, El’rufai must know that the choice of who rules Nigeria come 2027 can never be determined by him.”

The national chairman urged El’Rufai to stay away from NNPP issues, as the party is not an opposition to any other, including the APC..

He said the subject matter in Nigeria should be welfare and wellbeing of all Nigerians through good governance, hard work, collaboration and observance of the rule of Law.

I remain NNPP member – Suspended Kano lawmaker

Rep. Kabiru Rurum, member representing Rano/Kibiya/Bunkure Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has rejected his suspension from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) Kano State chapter.

Rurum disclosed in Kano on Monday that his suspension was baseless and in  contempt of court, saying he remained a member of the party.

Rurum said that he and his other allegedly suspended colleagues belonged to a different NNPP faction.

He accused the Kano NNPP leadership of defying legal rulings, stating that they were not legitimate party leaders.

Rurum cited a court judgment that dismissed their claims and maintained that they took him to an Abia High Court, adding that the court was yet to rule on the matter.

He alleged that the party’s leadership, including its national leader, Rabiu Kwankwaso, was invited to Sen. Kawu Sumaila’s, one of the affected lawmakers, daughter’s wedding but they chose not to attend.

Rurum dismissed the suspension as meaningless, stating that his faction operated independently.

He emphasised that the suspension only applied to the faction that issued it, as his group was not affiliated to them.

This development adds to the deepening rift within the NNPP, with ongoing legal battles and political tensions further widening the divide between the two factions.

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Kano State Chapter, earlier on Monday announced the suspension of four of its National Assembly members over alleged anti-party activities.

Alhaji Hashimu Dungurawa, the state chairman of the party, announced the suspension while addressing newsmen.

He told newsmen that the suspended lawmakers were Kawu Sumaila, Ali Gini, Sani Rogo and Kabiru Rurum.
