NNPP suspends 4 NASS members over alleged anti-party activities

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Kano Chapter, has suspended four of its National Assembly members for alleged anti-party activities.

Alhaji Hashimu Dungurawa, the state chairman of the party, announced the suspension while addressing newsmen on Monday in Kano.

The suspended lawmakers represent Kano South, Rano/Kibiya, Dala Federal, and Rogo/Karaye Federal Constituency of Kano State.

He named the suspended lawmakers Kawu Sumaila, Ali Gini, Sani Rogo and Kabiru Rurum.

“These members were elected under the NNPP platform but have recently been acting contrary to the party’s wishes, beliefs and values,’’ he said.

Dungurawa said the suspended members were given complementary tickets during the party elections but began to work against the party’s interests after being elected.

He cited a recent event where Sumaila inaugurated projects at his university in Sumaila without inviting party members as an indication of the anti-party activities.

He explained that a committee would be set up to investigate the issue and address it once and for all.

In spite of the suspension Dungurawa said there was still room for dialogue, adding that if their relationship with the party improved, they could be readmitted into the fold.

NAN reports that development comes amidst reports of internal crisis within the NNPP in Kano State with some members allegedly feeling marginalised by the party’s leadership.

NNPP reportedly dumps Kwankwassiya faction, picks new leadership

The National Chairman of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Dr. Agbo Major, has announced fresh reforms within the party following its just-concluded National Convention in Lagos.

Addressing a press conference at the party’s national headquarters in Abuja, Dr. Major confirmed the ratification of new leadership and the official expulsion of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Buba Galadima, and the entire Kwankwassiya faction.

The convention, held at Rockview Hotel in Apapa, Lagos on February 4, 2025, came after months of legal tussles and internal strife.

Dr. Major emphasized that the party’s actions were in full compliance with the Abia High Court judgment delivered on November 1, 2024, which mandated the Board of Trustees (BOT), led by Dr. Boniface Okechukwu Aniebonam, to take control of the party pending the resolution of court cases.

Major decision at the convention included the ratification of all congresses from the ward to zonal levels, expulsion of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Buba Galadima, and the Kwankwassiya group following the expiration of the MOU that facilitated their entry into the NNPP.
Others are the election of a new National Working Committee led by Dr. Agbo Major as National Chairman and the rejection of the controversial logo change and reinstatement of the party’s original basket of fruits on the Nigerian map emblem.

Dr. Major did not hold back in criticizing the Kwankwassiya faction, labeling them as “unemployed characters” and “sinking clowns” attempting to destabilize the party.
He singled out Dr. Ahmed Ajuji for spreading misinformation, accusing him of misleading Nigerians about court judgments and the party’s internal affairs.

“It’s unfortunate that at this stage of our national life, a misguided and obviously mentally unstable Dr. Ajuji would make such claims,” Dr. Major stated.
He further accused Ajuji of ignoring critical judgments, including a Federal High Court ruling in Kano that affirmed the legitimacy of candidates presented by the Dr. Agbo Major-led NNPP for the Kano local government elections.

The NNPP’s leadership also confirmed that all necessary documentation has been submitted to INEC, and changes in party records are expected in the coming days. Dr. Major urged INEC to uphold the rule of law and reflect the party’s new leadership structure in its records.

In a firm warning, Dr. Major called on the remaining members of the Kwankwassiya faction to peacefully exit the party, advising them to seek political relevance elsewhere.
“It is our hope that any other political party will consider their treacherous and deceitful antecedents before welcoming them,” he added.

The NNPP leadership remains focused on consolidating its gains and preparing for the 2027 general elections. Dr. Major concluded by urging the press to disregard distractions from expelled members and reaffirmed the party’s commitment to unity and progress.

  • NNPP denies holding national convention in Lagos

NNPP denies holding national convention in Lagos

The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) on Thursday says the party never conducted any national convention  or inaugurate a new National Working Committee (NWC) members of the party in Lagos State.

The party National Chairman, Dr Ajuji Ahmed, stated this during the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) meeting with the NNPP National Assembly members led by Sen. Rufa’i Hanga at the party headquarters in Abuja.

Ahmed said that the current NWC of the NNPP was constituted in the year 2022 under the supervision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

According to the chairman, there is only one NNPP under his leadership and one national headquarters located in Abuja known to law and the INEC.

Ahmed added that the only logo of the NNPP known to law was the one with red, white colours with a book and academic cap in the middle, with the slogan “Education for All”.

He said it was clearly against the law, and against common decency, for any group under the guise of any identity different from those enumerated above, to refer to itself as NNPP.

“We want to use this medium to inform and confirm to the world that the NNPP does not operate from Apapa; we did not hold any convention this year in any hotel lobby in Lagos.

“Visit the INEC website and confirm for yourselves that our party is never chaired by Dr Agbo Major.

“Our NWC was inaugurated here in Abuja in April 2022 for a tenure of four years which ends in April 2026, and it is here in Abuja that our party is headquartered and operates from in accordance with the laws of the land,’’ he said.

He explained that Major and his expelled group parading themselves as NNPP leaders had been suspended and expelled from the party.

Ahmed said that immediately after the 2023 general elections, some members of the NNPP who openly played anti-party activities were subjected to proper disciplinary procedures and were found wanting.

He said that those members were duly sanctioned, but instead of exploring the party internal mechanisms to address their grievances, they decided to release themselves as willing tools to distract the party.

He added that the expelled members had been going from one court to the other, “and swiftly losing one case after another, including courts in Abuja, Ekiti, Port Harcourt, Awka, Kano, and Katsina.

“In November 2024, they took themselves to Court in Abia State, in the name of NNPP.

“Meanwhile, an Abuja Federal High Court as far back as April 2024 had ruled that, as expelled former members of the Party, they should stop parading themselves as NNPP members or leaders in any shape or form.

“The Federal High Court judgment of April 18, 2024, declared them as impostors, having been expelled by the party, and as such can neither sue in the name of the party nor against the party,’’ he said.

Ahmed expressed concerns that Major and his group could defile the above court judgments and orders claiming to be holding an unauthorised “national convention’’ for the party.

“For the purpose of clarity, on Jan. 16, 2025, the High Court of FCT, gave an order restraining them and their privies, proxies and whosoever from carrying out any official duty or activity for or on behalf of NNPP.

“The said orders were served on them, they have briefed their lawyers, they have appeared before the courts and filed their processes.

“Yet with brazen disregard to the orders of the court, the same group have gone ahead to hold this unlawful meeting and have purported to have elected members of a kangaroo National Working Committee.

“We are in court today Feb. 7, 2025, and INEC has filed their process denying knowledge and existence of the so-called convention in Apapa and the purported election,’’ he said.

The Labour Party (LP) 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has opened up on a merger deal with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) or any other party.

Peter Obi made this disclosure on Thursday morning during a press conference in Abuja on the state of the nation, stating that no agreement has been established with other parties.

The former Governor of Anambra State called on all lovers of Nigeria in the political space to unite in 2027 and defeat the All Progressives Congress (APC), which he accused of mismanaging the country’s resources.

According to him, the level of corruption in Nigeria remained high, including the cost of governance, which has led to an astronomical increase in public debt under the current administration of President Bola Tinubu of the APC.

Peter Obi maintained that government officials willfully mismanaged public funds in 2024 through incessant foreign travels.

Speaking further, Peter Obi frowned at the insecurity situation in the country, stating that it is unfortunate that Nigerians are dying needlessly due to banditry, terrorism, and kidnapping-for-ransom.

Meanwhile, the NNPP 2023 presidential candidate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has dismissed the purported report of reaching an agreement with the opposition presidential candidate of PDP, Atiku Abubakar, and Peter Obi, to share power by alternating terms.

The genius Media nigeria reports that Kwankwaso, in an interview with the BBC, expressed anger over the lies.

He stressed that he was unaware of such a claim but had heard reports that Atiku’s camp had been meeting with regional leaders, including clerics, to propagate the narrative.

The former governor of Kano State also explained that he had found peace since leaving the PDP for the NNPP and distanced himself from the power-sharing agreement.

2027: We will defeat you in Kano – APC brags to NNPP

Kano State chapter of All Progressives Congress (APC) says it will beat Sen.Rabiu Kwankwaso-led New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in the 2027 general election in the state.

The Chairman of the party, Prince Abdullahi Abbas, said this in a statement on Thursday in Kano. He advised Kwankwaso to channel his eneergy towards preparing to the ‘looming defeat’. The party cautioned against any action capable of compromising the outcome of the 2027 elections.

“Our teeming supporters in the APC have no cause to worry’,” he said. The APC assured that it was already waiting in the wing to reclaim the state from NNPP.

Recall that Kwankwaso recently boasted that NNPP would diminish APC influence on Kano State.

He said this in Kano while receiving some former councillors and senior special advisers,  who served during the administration Dr Abdullahi Ganduje. Ganduje is now the national chairman pf APC which rules at the federal level.

”The New Nigeria Peoples Party achieved this remarkable feat despite being a new political platform coupled with the late start of its campaign. Now, it’s our turn to diminish APC’s influence.

”We will work tirelessly to ensure their votes are reduced to less than 15,000 in Kano come  2027,”  Kwankwaso said.

Gombe NNPP governorship aspirant defects to PDP

Alhaji Khamisu Mailantarki, the governorship candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in Gombe State, has defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), alongside thousands of his supporters.

Mailantarki stated this at a political gathering organised to welcome the decampees into the PDP, on Saturday in Gombe.

He expressed confidence in the party under Ibrahim Dankwambo, adding that his quality leadership was a driving factor behind his return to the PDP.

“We initially began our political journey with the PDP, later becoming founding members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and along the way, we chose to join the NNPP.

“However, we are now back home in the PDP, reassured by the leadership of Dankwambo,” he said.

He also lambasted the APC administration in the state, stressing that it was not for the poor, and expressed concern over the treatment of the economically disadvantaged class.

He claimed that the APC government had seized land and implemented mandatory biometric attendance for public workers.

“This requirement has unfairly impacted those who struggle to reach the office daily due to the harsh economic conditions, especially as some states have reduced workdays to just three per week,” he said.

The PDP Chairman in the state, Gen. Abner Kwaskebe (rtd), whi formally presented the party’s membership card to Mailantarki, reaffirmed strong PDP roots in the state.

“In 2027, we will do everything humanly possible to regain leadership in Gombe State,” he said.

He assured that the party would embrace both old and returning members equally to foster unity.

  • Ondo 2024: Court declines to disqualify NNPP candidate

Ondo 2024: Court declines to disqualify NNPP candidate

An Ondo High Court in Akure on Thursday set aside the suit challenging the candidature of Mr Olugbenga Edema as the flag-bearer of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) for the Nov. 16 governorship election in the State.

Delivering judgment, Justice Oluyemi Osadabay, held that the court lacked jurisdiction to entertain the suit filed by a factional candidate of the party, Mr Michael Akintan, and his deputy, Mrs Kemi Fasua.

They are challenging the emergence of Edema as the candidate of the party.

Edema , a former lawmaker, emerged as the candidate of the party on June 5, after the former candidate, Mr Oluwatosin Ayeni stepped down for him. He chose Dr Rotimi Adeyemi as his running mate.

Ayeni was later made the official spokesperson of the candidate and the Director-General of Ondo State NNPP Gubernatorial Campaign Council after his resignation as a candidate.

However, in an originating summons filed by Akintan,  Fasua, Dr Gilbert  Agbo, and Comrade Oginni Olaposi, members  of the party, questioned  the emergence of Edema as the candidate of NNPP and his running mate.

In the suit, plaintiffs through their counsel, Mr Monday Mawah sought the court’s judgment on whether, in light of Sections  77 (2) and 77(3) of the Electoral Act 2022, the party was required to submit the register of members to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) no later than 30 days before the party’s primary.

The primary held on April 26.

They also asked whether, based on section 77(3), the defendant, whose name did not appear in the submitted register of the party, could  validly claim membership in the party as at the party’s  primary date.

The claimants were  seeking injunctive and declarative reliefs, including a perpetual injunction to restrain Edema from presenting himself as a member and the candidate of the NNPP in on the state  for the Nov. 16 governorship election.

But the defendants, through their lawyer, Mr Rotimi Olorunfemi, asked the court to dismiss or strike out the suit for constituting a gross abuse of the court process.

Olorunfemi said the suit was supposed to be filed at the Federal High Court, being a pre-election matter.

He stated that the issue of jurisdiction was a matter that would go  to the root and the competence of a court with adjudicatory power on a suit before it.

“Since the court has no jurisdiction, the case should be dismissed with cost against the claimants,” he said.

In her judgment, Justice Osadabay struck out the suit for lack of jurisdiction.

She said since the case fell within the pre-election matter, it was only the Federal High Court that could decide  to entertain the case.

The judge awarded N100.000 against the claimants.

Reacting to the judgment, Edema said the judgment had  led to rest the issue of whether he was a member or a candidate of NNPP.

“We knew a lot of people who are our adversaries were looking forward to dividing us. But thank God, apart from the judgment of this court, we have come together as a party to be one family.

“So, we are going to walk into this election as one family of NNPP. So, to the glory of God, the people of NNPP should rest assured that their candidate of NNPP is now on the ballot in the eye of the law and squarely.

“And come Nov. 16,   we will win with the support of the people of NNPP and God,” he said.

Similarly, Akintan said he was ready to accept Edema as the candidate of the party.

He said the court had decided the candidate and he would abide by the decision. Edema was also the  Chairman of Ondo State Oil Producing Area Development Commission (OSOPADEC).

Kano lawmaker debunks rift in NNPP

The leadership of Kano State House of Assembly says there is no faction or rift within the ruling New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) as being speculated by some online media outlets.

The Majority Leader of the house, Lawan Husseini, said this while briefing Assembly correspondents on Monday in Kano.

He said that the news conference was in reaction to a news report by an online media that 23 out of the 26 NNPP members were in support of political slogan, “Abba Tsaya da Kafarka” meaning “Abba, stand on your feet”.

Husseini also described the report that Gov. Abba Kabir-Yusuf snubbed meetings and refused to pick the calls of the party chieftain, Sen Rabiu Kwankwaso, as a “fabricated story by the opposition”.

The house leader also accused the opposition of trying to create another toxic situation in the state.

According to him, Abuja-based opposition politicians are the ones creating unnecessary tension to distract the governor from fulfilling his campaign promises.

“This is a fabricated story spread by mischief makers; their aim is to cause disharmony between Gov. Yusuf and his political mentor.

“We, honorable members, are hundred per cent loyal to party leadership under Sen Kwankwanso and also solidly behind Gov. Yusuf.

“Abuja based opposition politicians are hell bent to create rancour or chaos between Kwankwaso and his political son.

“The relationship between this two gentlemen existed for decades and is beyond politics. We are not aware or heard of any movement or slogan calling for disunity among party members,” he said.

The leader then restated the house members commitment to ensuring effective service delivery.
