NNPP strategises ahead of 2025 Anambra guber election

The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Anambra State, said it had commenced mobilisation and re-strategising to fully participate and win the Anambra State gubernatorial election in 2025.

Mr Patrick Ottis, Deputy Chairman, NNPP Anambra State, disclosed this at a meeting with party stakeholders from the 21 local government areas of the state, on Tuesday in Awka.

Ottis vowed that NNPP would take the lead at the governorship race.

“We are happy that a revived NNPP has emerged in Anambra State and this meeting is for us to ensure that all hands are on deck to take the state, come 2025.

“We need to put membership drive and mobilisation strategies in place ahead of the 2025 governorship election. I want to assure you that NNPP will be the party to beat in the election.

“We are calling for unity among party members in the state because we need to work with one mind and voice to achieve success,” he said.

Ottis said the party was solidly behind the duly elected Gov. Abba Yusuf of Kano state, and urged the judiciary to do the needful and not toy with people’s mandate.

He pledged the party’s unalloyed supports for the National Working Committee under the leadership of Alhaji Ali Kawu and the National Leader of the party, Dr Rabiu Kwankwaso.

Kano NNPP Chairman reacts over Appeal Court judgement

The Kano Chairman of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Alhaji Hashimu Dungurawa, has described the judgement of the Appeal  Court that sacked Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf as a threat to the survival to democracy.

Dungurawa disclosed this while speaking with newsmen in Kano on Friday.

“This judgement pose a great threat to our nation’s democracy because the electorates elected Governor Yusuf through the electoral process,  in a free, fair contest only for the Appeal Court to do otherwise.

“The judgement is very unexpected. We never expected it will happen this way. The way things are going and with the way the judicial system is, definitely democracy is coming to an end in this country.

“I see no reason why a person will go to the grassroots and introduce himself to the people, they will go to polling booth to cast their votes, and the Independent election umpire will issue him a certificate of return.

“He will enter office and just one, two or three people will sit down and remove him. This is very unbecoming and is not helping matters”.

Dungurawa described democracy as a game of numbers which his party had proven to be ahead of other contenders in the state but their expectations had been dashed by the Appeal Court’s verdict.

“Democracy is said to be a game of numbers and the person in question happens to get the highest numbers in the election.

“In all the Assembly members we are having 26 out of 40, we are having two out of three senators. And even the Presidential candidate is from the state and has the highest votes in a state in the presidential contest.

“We are not happy with this judgement and consider it not acceptable. We will take all the necessary steps to reclaim our stolen mandate.

“Because this is a stolen mandate and we will not allow it. People of Kano state are not happy with it, NNPP people are not happy with it,” he declared.

NNPP debunks merger talks with other parties

The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) said on Thursday in Lagos that it is not engaging in merger talks with any political party.

This is contained in a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji AbdulRazaq AbdulSalam.

“NNPP is an independent political group as such we stands firm in our commitment to respect all political parties and refuses to engage in merging with any party to combat another.

“Our party values inclusivity and maintains a non-partisan approach.

“It is crucial to note that those engaging the merger talk have been expelled from NNPP, and the party currently faces internal conflicts, pending court resolution.

“Until proven otherwise, these internal matters take precedence,” the NNPP spokesman said.

According to him, the resolution of the NNPP Board of Trustees (BOT) remains that the Abba Kawu-led National Working Committee (NWC) is dissolved and Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso is expelled from the party.

“While we note the merger proposal, the stance of our party is clear: we are not interested in the merger offer at this point,” AbdulSalam said.

The crisis within the NNPP started when the NWC of the party loyal to Kwankwaso, announced the suspension of the NNPP founder, Dr Boniface Aniebonam and the National Publicity Secretary, Dr Agbo Major on August 24.

Consequently, the National Executive Committee of the party announced the expulsion of Kwankwaso, the party’s 2023 Presidential Candidate, following his alleged refusal to appear before the party’s disciplinary committee.

The crisis within the party has continued to fester.

Mr Dave Akunyili has emerged the acting Chairman of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Anambara State chapter, to replace Mr Felix Chukwurah who was expelled due to alleged involvement in anti-party activities.

Onwuekelu said that Akunyili was unanimously chosen by the party faithful in the state, including state executive members, local government party chairmen and other stakeholders.

He said that the nomination of the acting Chairman would require the approval of the National Working Committee (NWC).

“The national leadership of the party recognised that getting a state chairman is a step towards the harmonisation of the party structures in Anambra.

“The turnout of party stakeholders and faithful shows that they are supportive and loyal to the growth of the party under the leadership of Sen. Rabiu Kwankwaso and the National Chairman, Alhaji Abba Kawu Alli, ” he said.

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has sacked Musa Ilyasu Kwankwaso of the All Progressives Congress and reinstated Yusuf Umar Datti of the New Nigeria People’s Party in the Kura/Madobi/Garun Malam Federal Constituency Election.

The three-panel led by Justice Tunde Oyebamiji Awotoye allowed an Appeal by Yusuf Datti and averred that the tribunal was wrong to have counted the date of the Appellant’s resignation on the date of his party’s primary election and that Section 77 of the Electoral Act was misapplied, saying no court has jurisdiction on the issue of membership of the party.

APC chair, Ganduje receives defectors from NNPP

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje on Tuesday received defectors from the opposition New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) assuring them of fair treatment by the party.

He described the APC as a strong political institution made up of personalities of knowledge and wisdom that were conversant with problems and aspiration of Nigerians.

Ganduje lauded the defectors for joining the APC, saying their decision was a well thought out one.

He said that the APC was endowed with a strong structure capable of resolving conflicts among the ranks of its supporters across the country.

He assured them that the APC remained a truly Nigerian party with members drawn from various ethnic and religious backgrounds.

“The APC is a party that is an expert in the management of diversity, you have returned home to where you rightfully belong.

“The APC will take the people of Nigeria to the next level and I assure you that you are now full members of the party.

“You are coming into the party at the right time when you can take an active role, here in the APC, we practice internal democracy and you can aspire for any position,” Ganduje said.

He assured them that he would make a formal arrangements to receive them in their domains where they would be fully integrated into the party’s fold in due course.

Earlier, Prof. Rufa’i Alkali, former NNPP National Chairman who led the defectors congratulated Ganduje on his emergence as APC National Chairman.

He said that Ganduje assumed the party’s leadership at a critical time in the nation’s history when Nigeria was going through challenging political transition period.

“But we have no doubt, given your wealth of experience in politics and governance.

“You are more than equal to the task, and you are therefore destined to succeed and make your mark in the party administration,” he said.

He also congratulated President Bola Tinubu and the Vice-President, Kashim Shettima on their election and their subsequent victory at the Presidential Election Tribunal and at the Supreme Court.

This, he said, had finally put to rest all contending issues relating to the 2023 presidential elections.

Alkali said they joined the APC because they believed it had a better vision for the country, adding that there was no reason for the oppositions to challenge President Bola Tinubu’s electoral victory in courts.

“People who went to court would have congratulated the President instead of going to court.Today, we have all decided to move forward with the APC.

“The good news we are bringing to you and to the APC today is that we are here as representatives of the multitude of hundreds of thousands of our supporters.

“Friends, associates and well wishers within the NNPP and PDP nationwide who were earnestly waiting for this historic day.

“As the events of today come to an end, we shall all go back to our respective States, Local Government Areas and our Wards to commence the mop up operations,” he said.

This, he said, was to ensure that no one was left behind in the journey of salvaging the country.

He said that given the numerous challenges confronting the country at this point of its political history, all Nigerians deserved peace and tranquility to go about their normal life.

He added that to achieve this, there was need to preserve the country, saying that democratic principles  must be protected and the government must be supported.

Tinubu’s CSU certificate controversy: You’re on your own, NNPP tells Atiku

The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has asked former vice president and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, to leave the its party out of his quest to challenge the election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Supreme Court.

Atiku had last week in a press conference called on Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwakwanso, presidential candidates of the Labour Party and the NNPP respectively to team up with him to expose the ‘dirty’ secrets of President Tinubu

But addressing journalists at the NNPP national secretariat in Abuja, the acting deputy national chairman, Prince Nwaeze Onu, said that unlike Atiku and the PDP, the NNPP is not in court and would not want to be seen as an interloper in a case that it is not involved in.

He said the NNPP should not be dragged into things affecting other parties, saying the party decided not to approach the court because of its love for Nigeria.

  • Why Kwankwaso will remain presidential elections serial loser – Ganduje

Why Kwankwaso will remain presidential elections serial loser – Ganduje

The national chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Abduallahi Ganduje has predicted that the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Kwankwaso would remain a serial loser at presidential elections.

He made this prediction while hosting the Bauchi state NNPP governorship candidate in the 2023 election, Haliru Dauda Jika, who formally returned back the APC at the national secretariat of the party in Abuja

Ganduje said that the pursuit of selfish interest as against national interest would continue to hinder the realisation of Kwankwaso’s presidential ambition.

He also blamed Kwankwaso’s inability to maintain a principled stand in party politics over the years as another factor that made the former minister of defence a perpetual loser.

The APC chairman, who hailed and described the decision of Jika to return back to the ruling party as a step in the right direction, noted that the former NNPP flag bearer in Bauchi state by now must have realised that the ‘Kwankwasiyya backed’ NNPP as “deceitful and exploitative.”

Receiving Jika with the entire NNPP structure in Bauchi state, Ganduje said: “When I got the news that you were coming to see me in my house to discuss the way forward, I knew I was meeting a very formidable politician in the person of Senator Jika who is a household name in Bauchi state.

“He is returning to a party that is very progressive and focused when we look at where he was coming from. He is coming from a party that used to be a decent party and highly respected but was later hijacked and polluted by the kwankwasiya group.

“We are happy that the original NNPP is taking back its proper position and leaving the kwankwasiya group deserted and thrown out completely.

“The Kwankwasiyya group headed by the former kano state governor was forced to go into a sabbatical leave for eight years before it found its way back to Government House in Kano.

“The Kwankwasiya head who wears a red cap is the person who prefers to be a king in hell than be a servant in paradise. He specializes in decieving people. He was first in PDP, came back to APC when it was formed. That was when the nPDP merged with the legacy parties to form the APC.

“Instead of staying in APC because of his ambition, he decided to leave APC after failing to pick the presidential ticket to go back to the PDP. He could not stay there again when he failed to pick the ticket.

“He still went on his own to contest the presidential poll and was defeated twice. He is a professional contestant for presidential elections and would remain a professional failure. He loves himself so much. I am happy you have dumped the red cap . It is a very sensible action that you have taken.”

The chairman then promised the returnees of inclusiveness in the running of the party in the state as part of ongoing effort to reposition the party ahead of the 2027 poll, stressing that the party regretted its performance at the just concluded general elections in the state.

The national chairman then carried out a symbolic change by removing the red cap, usual worn by the Kwankwasiya group and replaced it with the unbroken chain insignia cap of President Bola Tinubu to receive Jika and his group to APC fold.

Addressing newsmen after the ceremony, the former NNPP candidate said his decision to return to APC was informed by the wishes of his teeming supporters in Bauchi state.

He said: “My dumping NNPP for APC has nothing to do with the presidential candidate of NNPP. I have no issue with Kwankwaso. The interest of Bauchi State informed my returning back to APC.”

  • NNPP petitions Justice Anya for alleged uncomplimentary remarks

NNPP petitions Justice Anya for alleged uncomplimentary remarks

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has petitioned the National Judicial Council (NJC), over alleged uncomplimentary comments credited to Justice Benson Anya, against the party and its members while delivering judgment on the Kano governorship elections.

Justice Anya was alleged to have said in his submission at the tribunal that, “Instead of some Kano politicians to be allowed to use banditry and violence to abort democracy in Kano State, justice will be used to stop them from destroying democracy in Kano and upward.”

Speaking with Journalists in Kano, the state Chairman of the party Hashimu Dungurawa, said it was a clear fact that the party was denied justice based on emotion and sentiments.

According to him, the party had petitioned the NJC against the judge’s remarks, saying, “We shall see whether he is right to use personal sentiments and quashed our victory and also seeks justice on this.”

He said, ” A judge cannot just sit down because of unfounded death threats to be impartial in our judgement. This clearly showed to us that you are not been fair and just in this election verdict.

“We are not taking lightly the comments credited to Justice Anya that, ‘the gang of red cap wearers who, are like a violent and terrorist cult, chased us out of Kano and put us in the fear of our lives.’

The NNPP Chairman frowned on the judge’s remarks which he quoted as: “Instead of some Kano politicians to be allowed to use banditry and violence to abort Democracy in Kano State, justice will be used to stop them from destroying democracy in Kano and upward, we do not want Anarchy and terrorism as being promoted in Kano State and as threatened by them.”

The NNPP Chairman vehemently objected to such language, which, he said, was unbecoming of a Judge and defender of justice and the rule of law.

“Of course, these libelous, and outright condemnable comments credited to the panel and especially those portions where Justice Benson Anya went beyond his judicial bounds of immunity and acted as if he is an interested party in the matter by casting aspersions on the leadership and members of NNPP.”

  • Governorship election: NNPP to appeal tribunal’s judgement in Kano

Governorship election: NNPP to appeal tribunal’s judgement in Kano

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) says it will appeal against Wednesday’s judgment by the Kano State Election  Petition Tribunal that upturned the election of its Gov. Abba Kabir-Yusuf.

Acting Deputy National Chairman of the party, Prince Nwaeze Onu told a news conference on Thursday in Abuja that the judgment that sacked Kabir-Yusuf as governor was “most unfair’’ .

He added that the judgment was capable of eroding confidence in the judiciary.

The tribunal declared on Wednesday that Alhaji Nasiru Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress (APC) won the March 18 governorship election in Kano State.

It directed INEC to give the Certificate of Return in the election to Gawuna in place of NNPP’s Kabir-Yusuf.

“The judgment nullified the free, credible and globally acclaimed fair election of our governorship candidate.

“The tribunal arrived at this unjust judgment by unfairly subtracting 165,663 votes from Kabir-Yusuf’s tally in order to enable it to unfairly award the election result to the candidate of the APC.

“In doing so, the tribunal obviously affirms its belief that the vote tally of the APC candidate was sacrosanct.

“The Supreme Court in many cases has stated its position on this matter in earlier judgments,’’ Onu said.

He added that it would be a hard nut to crack for the tribunal to convince non-partisan Nigerians that the NNPP won all other elections in Kano State, but that of the governorship race.

“For emphasis, NNPP’s presidential candidate, Sen. Musa Kwankwaso, defeated the candidate of the APC, Sen. Bola Tinubu in Kano State with a wide margin.

“In the same vein, NNPP won two senatorial seats as against APC’s one seat. NNPP won 18 House of Representatives seats as against APC’s four.

“At the House of Assembly elections, NNPP won a clear majority of seats as against APC’s meagre number of seats.

“And yet the tribunal believes it was over-voting that gave NNPP majority votes in the governorship election,’’ he observed.

Onu expressed the belief that the NNPP would get back its mandate freely given by the people Kano State within the ambit of the law and the provisions of the 1999 Constitution.

“We call on the Judiciary to do the needful. We look forward to a more impartial judgment in the next round of litigation,’’ he stressed.

Onu also called on NNPP supporters in Kano State and in Nigeria as a whole to remain calm, be law-abiding, and maintain the peace.

He stressed that “the glaringly lopsided judgment cannot stand the test of natural justice and fair play’’.

He described the declared 24-hour curfew on Kano State as an attempt to deprive the people of their God-given freedom of expression, freedom of movement and their livelihoods.
