‘I was jobless for a year after Etisalat fired me’ – Popular Nollywood actor opens up

Nollywood actor, Uzor Arukwe, has opened up on his journey into the movie industry, recalling how a popular telecommunication Company, Etisalat sacked him in 2012.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that Uzor during a recent chat with media personality, Chude Jidenonwo, said he was sacked while hoping for a promotion from specialist to manager after years with the telecom firm.

According to the thespian, he ‘took the fall’ for an incident in his department since he was the team lead.

Uzor said an attempt to get into Nollywood also failed, stressing he was jobless from November 2012 to November 2013 with nobody calling him for movie roles.

However, when he eventually started getting roles, he was paid N1,000, N2,000, and N10,000 and even received “thank you for coming” as payment at one point.

He said, “I worked in telcos. I worked in retail and sports. To be honest, I was fired from Etisalat, actually. I do not think my mum even knows. I was fired sometime in 2012. Something happened in my department. I was heading the team at the time. Then something happened I had to take the fall as the leader.

“…Five years after, when I came to a place where I was hoping to become a manager, I had become a specialist, and then this happened. It was one of the hardest things ever. They stripped me of everything that makes you think you have a job. I tried to get into film sometime in 2012, but it was really slow.

“The only gig I got between 2012 and 2013 when I got my second job was some stage drama. Seyi Babatope got me the gig. That was the only gig I got between November 2012 when I was fired till December 2013. I was at home for one year and had no job. Nobody was calling me for films. It was terrible.

“I was like I think I should go back. I dusted my certificate again. And somehow I got a job again. There then for another five years. And then in 2018, I was like I think I am done. I think I have tried. I left my company in April 2018 and got my first gig with Iroko on August 28, 2018. At this time, I was broke, busted down, and had no money. It was so bad that I was saying prayers at noon.”

New details on how Nollywood actor Jnr Pope Died In boat tragedy emerges

New reports have shown that Nollywood actor, John Paul Odonwodo, popularly known as Junior Pope, did not have access to a life jacket, countering viral stories that he had turned one down before the tragic boat incident on April 10 at the Anam River in Anambra State, which claimed his life and that of four others.

The committee chairman, Prince Uvo Kevin Oghogho, who was set up by the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) to investigate the accident, refuted the claims that the boat operators offered a life jacket to the late actor.

“No life jacket was provided to the late actor,” Oghogho stated. He noted that only two passengers, the Director of Photography and the Sound Engineer, were wearing life jackets, which they had hired from the boat operators.

When the accident occurred, the operators quickly brought out new life jackets. They had not been making life jackets available to passengers previously,” he said.

Oghogho, made this known during an interview with Vanguard, shortly after presenting his committee’s findings to the National Executive Council of the guild in Lagos. The report was issued three months after the accident.

Detailing the events leading up to the mishap, Oghogho explained, The outboard engine fibre boat conveying the cast and crew of the movie, produced by Adamma Luke departed Asaba jetty with Ononno jetty as destination. As they embarked on the journey, at about 12.30 pm, according to the survivors, Jnr Pope was making a video, while his colleagues on board were catching fun with him.

“The boat driver’s attention was drawn to the scene, as he was looking back to catch a glimpse of the action, while he was at high speed. He eventually crashed into a crossing local fishing canoe, leading to the speed boat capsizing and emptying all the occupants into the Anam river. Five passengers died on the spot, while seven were rescued alive,” Oghogho recounted.

Oghogho dismissed rumors that Jnr Pope was killed and then thrown into the river, explaining that another victim also bled from the nose, not just Jnr Pope.

He added that the doctor attached to the marine police, who recovered Jnr Pope’s body and that of another victim named Friday, performed CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) on-site and confirmed them dead before their bodies were taken to the morgue in Asaba.

Oghogho’s committee recommended that the Ministry of Transportation or the Inland Waterways should mandate the provision of life jackets for all passengers before boarding water transportation.

  • Kanayo criticises ‘sugar daddies’ for funding actresses, says they make male actors look lazy

Kanayo criticises ‘sugar daddies’ for funding actresses, says they make male actors look lazy

Veteran Nollywood actor, Anayo Modestus Onyekwere, popularly known as Kanayo O. Kanayo, has criticised wealthy Nigerian men who spend lavishly on actresses in the entertainment industry.

The 62-year-old actor said that such financial support creates the perception that male actors are not working hard.

According to the veteran actor during a recent episode of “The Honest Bunch” podcast, financial disparities between entertainers, jeopardises the careers of their male counterparts.

“Many Nigerian rich men patronize our women and give them benefits that make us look like we are not working hard. Nigerian rich men spend money on our girls to the extent that it impoverishes us and makes it look like we don’t work hard,” he said.

Kanayo elaborated on the disparity: “You call a girl, she says she wants to do a production, she’s your girlfriend from whatever benefits she gives you. How much is she asking for this production, N150m, N100m? But me wey be KOK, go and work hard my friend, we all men.”

The veteran actor further pointed out that male actors often face financial difficulties without any support: “It’s not a good situation. Have you seen any lady ask for financial help for medical expenses? No, it’s only the men. We are an endangered species.

“Many girls are desperate to act, telling a man do with me whatever you want. When you offer a man and say, Oga give me that role, I will come to your hotel, what is this, I am not a child. What do you expect?” he queried.

The veteran actor said it’s now a trend for actresses to undergo cosmetic surgery to fit into the industry.

“You go do BBL, you have it and puff it up. Most of the girls are coming to Nollywood to learn how to act. You don’t come to Nollywood to learn how to act; you come to Nollywood to exploit your trade and make it better. Acting is in you, if it’s not in you, go and sell crayfish,” he added.

Kanayo further spoke on lack of unity within the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN). He lamented that many actors who have achieved stardom fail to participate in guild activities.

“People who hit stardom say, ‘I have no business with this.’ There needs to be a clarion call for everybody to know that we are better off being under a guild, We are better of being under an association, protecting our general interest.

“But when you have people who do not have that kind of feeling it becomes bad. So, it’s a work in progress, its the continuum to call on the actress and AGN president, which is executive to keep on working to bring in actors together and for actors to know, not just when we go for burial hours, not when we have candle nght. Team work makes the gym walk that we need to work as a team and we will have more respect if we work as an association that we have more respect,” he said.
