  • Popular Hollywood actor, Donald Sutherland dies

Popular Hollywood actor, Donald Sutherland dies

Veteran actor, Donald Sutherland has given up the ghost.

The enigmatic Canadian actor whose lengthy career encompassed films including “The Dirty Dozen” and “The Hunger Games,” has died, his son said Thursday.

Sutherland was 88 when he died.

“With a heavy heart, I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away,” actor Kiefer Sutherland wrote on X.

The elder Sutherland had a distinctive look — and piercing eyes — that brought a depth and mystery to the huge range of roles he essayed over half a century on the big screen.

He played dashing leading men as well as antiheroes and villains, most recently making a name among a new generation of fans as the evil President Snow in “The Hunger Games” franchise.

“I personally think (he was) one of the most important actors in the history of film. Never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly. He loved what he did and did what he loved, and one can never ask for more than that. A life well lived,” wrote Kiefer Sutherland.

After what he himself termed a “meandering” start to his acting career, Donald Sutherland came to prominence in Robert Aldrich’s “The Dirty Dozen,” where 12 convicts are tasked with carrying out what appears to be a suicide mission in occupied France.

Starring alongside luminaries such as Charles Bronson, Lee Marvin and Telly Savalas, Sutherland’s impish charms caught the attention of producers of “MASH.”

The sophisticated satire on the Vietnam War, in which he was cast opposite Elliott Gould, turned Sutherland into a household name in 1970s America, and opened the door to a durable career that would see him work with some of the biggest names in show business.

  • There is hunger, people are suffering’ – Veteran actor, Lere Paimo

There is hunger, people are suffering’ – Veteran actor, Lere Paimo

A veteran Nollywood actor, Lere Paimo has made a public appeal to South West governors to control the activities of herders in the region, as farmers could no longer access their ancestral farms due to insecurity.

The Yoruba actor in a recent interview said there’s hunger in the land which has led to increasing suffering because peasant farmers are unable to carry out their usual farming due to fear of destruction by herders.

The renowned actor suggested that South West governors to work together and implement strategies to curb the activities of violent herders to guarantee food availability in the area.

Furthermore, Oyo State-born actor emphasized that by ensuring security, improving infrastructure, and offering support to farmers, the South-West could sustainably feed its citizens and the entire nation.

Expressing his belief, Paimo, who is widely recognized as Eda Onile Ola, noted that with proper security, infrastructure, and encouragement for agriculturalists, the South-West region could provide for its population and the whole country.

The veteran said: “Let every South-West governor control the activities of herders, who always clash with farmers. This has sent many away from their ancestral farms, and the attendant hunger is staring us in the face.

“The herders have brought a lot of losses to many farmers by making their cattle to feed on farms while some farmers have also lost their lives in the process. Many have left their farms over this.

“This is very bad. Each governor has the authority and power in their various states to ensure that herders are tamed for people to have the confidence to go back to farm without fear of any loss.

“People are suffering and hungry because many people have deserted farms because of security. If we want food security like before, we need to do something in that direction.

“Let each governor in the region take it as a personal responsibility to ensure stiff penalties for any herder who leads his flock to feed on people’s farms.”

Lere Paimo advocated ranches for herders as part of efforts to turnaround the current food crisis in the country.

He added: “We must take actions now to ensure security in the region, especially for farmers to enhance food security.

“South-West has enough arable land to growth its food and also feed the entire nation.

“The herder-farmer clashes is creating a lot of fears for the farmers in the region and our leaders must take urgent action before it will be too late.”
