  • How I battled depression after Oloture – Beverly Osu

How I battled depression after Oloture – Beverly Osu

Nigerian actress and model Beverly Osu has shared her struggles with depression following her role in the critically acclaimed Netflix film Òlòtūré.

In a candid interview with BBC Pidgin, Osu revealed that the intense nature of her character led to an identity crisis, plunging her into a three-month bout of depression.

Osu explained that as a method actress she fully immerses herself in her characters, making it challenging to detach from them after filming ends. “What we are is what they call method actors. I can’t just read a script, execute it, and then in two days become another person. It takes a lot of mental detox before I can enter into another character,” she said.

Osu’s experience with depression was a result of her deep involvement in the film. “When I shot Òlòtūré and left the set, I was depressed for three months because of an identity crisis. I was trying to search and piece together fragments of Beverly in order to bring myself back,” she added.

However, this experience has profoundly impacted Osu, shaping her interest in mental health and inspiring her to raise awareness about the importance of mental well-being. She emphasized that many people, particularly in Nigeria, tend to overlook mental health issues, which can have severe consequences.

Through her platform, Osu encourages others to prioritize their mental health and seek help when needed. Her advocacy stems from her own experiences and the positive feedback she’s received from fans. “I’ve noticed that many people neglect it. I hear testimonies where people tell me, ‘Beverly, the way you carry yourself inspires me,’ or ‘What you said helped me understand myself before trying to understand others.’ Those words give me joy,” she said.

Osu’s story serves as a reminder of the importance of prioritizing mental health, especially in the entertainment industry where actors often take on intense roles that can impact their well-being. By sharing her struggles, Osu hopes to inspire others to prioritize their mental health and seek help when needed.

Why I stopped going to church – Actress Sarah Martins opens up

Nollywood actress, Sarah Martins has revealed that her decision to stop going to church came after a  repeated experience of pastors trying to make unwanted advances toward her in every congregation she joined.

The actress during a recent interview also disclosed that she was once active in church activities but later realised that attending services alone does not guarantee favour with God.

She added that this discovery led her to focus on building a personal connection with God, noting that she now expresses her faith through charity work and private worship, which she said has brought her answered prayers.

“I am not an atheist. I’m a Christian, and I used to be very active in church, but over time I realised that going to church alone doesn’t make you God’s favourite. It’s what you do behind closed doors that really matters.

“Unfortunately, in every church I attended, the pastors started making advances at me. So, I stopped. I built a personal relationship with God and made a promise to stay faithful to Him by doing things that please Him. Since then, every time I go down on my knees, He answers. So yes, the pastoral advances pushed me away, but I now worship God in my own way—through charity and personal devotion.”

  • Yvonne Jegede reveals she almost rejected role in 2Baba’s African queen video

Yvonne Jegede reveals she almost rejected role in 2Baba’s African queen video

Yvonne Jegede Nollywood actress has opened up about her unexpected journey into the spotlight as one of the vixens in 2Baba’s legendary 2004 music video for African Queen.

In a recent interview on Nollywood Radio, Jegede shared behind-the-scenes details of how what seemed like a random decision turned into a memorable moment in Nigerian pop culture history.

According to the actress, she initially turned down the offer to appear in the music video, explaining that her heart was firmly set on acting and she had no interest in being a video vixen.

When the director of African Queen first called me, I bluntly said, ‘No, I’m not interested,’” Jegede recalled. “I didn’t even know what African Queen was. Tuface had just gone solo from Plantashun Boiz, and I hadn’t heard any of his new songs. I just wasn’t paying attention.”

It wasn’t until she spoke with a friend later that evening that her stance began to change. Jegede casually mentioned the offer and the song’s title, only for her friend to react with wild excitement.

“He screamed, ‘I love that song! Go and do it!’ That was the moment I started to reconsider. I thought, maybe I should give it a shot,” she said.

By that night, she had called the director back, received instructions for the shoot, and got herself ready. The next morning, she found herself on set , and face-to-face with the music legend himself, 2Baba (then known as Tuface Idibia).

It felt surreal,” she said. “Meeting him for the first time on that set… it hit me that I was part of something big. But even then, I knew that was not my path. I didn’t want to be a video vixen. I kept saying, ‘I just want to act.’”

Following the African Queen video, Jegede made another brief appearance in Djinee’s music video for Ego, but she clarified that it was more of a favour to a friend than a career move. The director of Ego was someone she knew personally and who was also working on music videos for groups like Styl-Plus at the time.

I was even supposed to feature in Styl-Plus’s Olufunmi video,” she revealed. “But I was stuck in traffic and missed the shoot. That would have been another one for my CV.”

Despite these high-profile appearances, Jegede insists her heart remained rooted in film and storytelling.

My acting career has been fulfilling,  I’m not going to lie,” she said with pride. “Yes, African Queen gave me visibility, but my passion has always been acting. I never had the desire to build a career in music videos or to dance in front of the camera. I just wanted to act and tell stories.”

Reflecting on the experience, Jegede acknowledged that sometimes life takes unexpected turns, and seemingly small decisions can lead to iconic moments.

Looking back, I’m glad I did it. It was one of those once-in-a-lifetime moments. But I knew from the start: acting is where I belong.”
