How I bonded with the surrogate who made me a mother – Ini Edo

Ini Edo, the Nollywood actress, has shed light on the emotional and ethical dimensions of her surrogacy journey.

The movie star, who welcomed her child via surrogacy in June 2023, revealed that she chose this path after experiencing multiple miscarriages. Her desire to become a mother, despite not being married, motivated her decision.

Speaking at the Meet Surrogate Mothers free IVF conference, Edo emphasized that her surrogate was much more than just a carrier of her child.

She explained that she and her surrogate shared a deeply collaborative and emotionally charged relationship, and that she was actively involved in every aspect emotionally, medically, and personally. The award-winning actress also stressed that surrogacy should never be reduced to a mere business arrangement.

“For me, the journey was intimate and not transactional. The surrogate who carried my child was not a stranger from a nameless system. She was a woman with her own family, her values, and her dreams,” she said.

‎”She wasn’t a vessel. I was involved every step of the way. Intended mothers are typically involved in parental care, prenatal care, medical decisions, and emotional bonding during pregnancy.

“Even though they are not physically carrying this child, they walk the journey together. Even though they are not physically carrying this child, they sort of walk the journey together.”

Edo also called for stronger legal protections and urged society to approach surrogacy with empathy and transparency.

The 43-year-old actress commended recent legislative efforts in Nigeria, including a proposed bill by the house of representatives to ban commercial surrogacy.

“…We need a new narrative that champions ethical surrogacy grounded in informed consent, legal protection, and mutual respect,” she added.

“The world where no woman is being exploited but also where no family is ever denied hope simply because their path to parenthood looks different. Surrogacy is not perfect, it needs regulation, transparency, empathy but it’s not a factory.

‎”It’s a bridge between despair and joy between strangers who become families between the impossible and the miraculous.

“Talking about regulation, I was happy to recently read in the news that the House of Representative moved to ban commercial surrogacy in Nigeria and further proposed the jail term and two million find on corporate other keep provisions of the bill.

“Other key provision of the bill apart from the ban on commercial surrogacy are the agreements must be strictly altruistic which means no financial profits is involved, except for re-enbossing medical and pregnancy related expenses.

“Two, explicit protection against coercion of forced surrogacy arrangements, amongst others. We need legal protection and clarity.

“The Nigerian law should recognise and protect the right of mothers through surrogacy, ensuring full legal parentage and avoiding court to disputes. Surrogacy deserve respect not stigma.”

Nollywood actress Remmy Njoku raises alarm over high circulation of fake drugs in Nigeria

Nollywood actress Mary Remmy Njoku has raised an alarm over the circulation of potentially fake or ineffective medications in Nigeria, citing her personal experience with food poisoning on a film set.

The mother of four via Instagram recounted how she purchased a certain medication from a well-known pharmacy chain in Nigeria, but after taking the medication for three days, her symptoms persisted.

However, when her husband bought the same medication from abroad, she experienced rapid relief within five minutes.

Njoku questioned the quality of medications sold locally, noting that this was not an isolated incident. She urged the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to take immediate action, warning that substandard drugs pose a serious public health threat.

In her words she said, “I want to share a recent experience: I had food poisoning on a set and sent a staff member to buy Imodium from a well-known pharmacy chain in Nigeria. A medication I’ve used many times before. I took it for about three days, but my symptoms persisted. Then my husband bought a tiny tablet of the same Imodium from abroad, and after taking it, my stomach issues subsided within just five minutes.

“This isn’t the first time I have noticed a difference. So I have to ask: What exactly are we being sold in Nigeria? What’s going on with our drugs? This is a public health risk, and NAFDAC must take it seriously. This is very dangerous.”

“I thank God I stood with my dignity. That is what I am enjoying today. I held on to my virginity. I stand out among them now.”

She also narrated how a late female colleague, who also rejected sexual advances, was turned away by a marketer at Arena.

“The lady at the time told me to continue with my nobility,” she said.

“Many people come online saying how can I have two children for two different fathers, they do not even know my story. Nobody prays to have children for different fathers. That is why I tell people that I am a widow and it was not because I was divorced.”

She said, “We had a court wedding. When the issue of extramarital affairs came up, I was already living with him. When I gave birth, he was working in a fuel station, while I took up a teaching job.

“When I was done with the day job, I did extra lessons too. I started noticing that he was acting strangely, he was no longer loving. He would be on long midnight calls claiming he was talking to his boss but I knew it a woman.

“You know we all have our limits and when I got to mine, I told him.”

Why I supported Princess during Baba Ijesha’ rape case– Iyabo Ojo

Iyabo Ojo, the popular Nollywood actress has opened up on the reason she threw her weight behind comedienne Princess during the Baba Ijesha alleged rape case.

Iyabo during a recent interview cited her own personal experiences of being molested multiple times, which according to her, drove her to speak against the abuse, emphasising the need for societal change.

Iyabo who expressed her disappointment on how adults manipulated the story and attacked the victim and Princess, stressed the importance of setting a positive example as entertainers.

In her words: “I was taken aback when I saw adults manipulating the story and even coming for the child and Princess, and that made me know we have a long way to go in Nigeria.

“You’ll notice when I kick, I kick when my fellow entertainers do wrong, because I feel like we are supposed to do right by our people, that’s why we are entertainers. We are also evangelist because if we’re playing a bad role something bad must happen to the person playing the bad role, we are preaching, we cannot be preaching and doing the same bad thing that we’re telling people that is wrong, so for me it gets to me more when a known person does something wrong.”
