Why banks don’t give loans to Nollywood filmmakers-Jim Iyke

    Popular actor and filmmaker,
Jim Iyke says financial institutions can’t give enough loans to Nollywood filmmakers because the industry has not been able to achieve a structural framework that makes it appear bankable.

The outspoken role interpreter made this known in a chat with HipTV.

“There’s a lot we need. People say banks and financial institutions don’t do nearly enough for us,” Iyke explained.

“When you walk into a bank, the first point of interest is the ROI. They’re giving you money and want something in return. They want to understand that you’re a bankable entity. We’ve not made that happen yet.

“Everyone is fixated on the creative aspect of it: creating content, superseding themselves, getting into Hollywood, and making sure it’s a Netflix film. We’ve been fixated on the show for too long. They forget there’s a business to it.”

Iyke emphasized on the need to push for laws, safeguard the products of Nollywood, and build a stronger financial base.

“It’s called show business. Let’s bring the needed experts; push our government to make laws that will safeguard our products. This will leave our legacy and residues intact; make this legacy viable for our children,” he added.

“Everyone is just playing the keeping-up-with-the-Joneses game: buying the latest cars, owning the nicest houses, and earning the biggest bank accounts. We forget that these are just very trivial parts of the big picture.

“The big picture is building a strong financial base that is viable so that any thespian of worth can walk into a bank and take what they need to expand their horizon. All that is happening with financial institutions now is charity.

“They give you [loans] and they go and have a meeting behind the scenes like, ‘you know we’re not expecting this money back.’ That shouldn’t happen in an entity as big as ours. It’s the second-largest industry worldwide.

“There’s just so much potential and I don’t understand why our country as a whole doesn’t want to see that.”

  • Sex-for-roles still order of the day in Nollywood- Charity Nnaji

Sex-for-roles still order of the day in Nollywood- Charity Nnaji

Outspoken actress, Charity Nnaji got many talking during the week when she stated that “being a female celebrity is more like advanced prostitution”. Many condemned her for the unusual comment.

Nnaji has however insisted that it is the order of the day in Nollywood.

According to her: “It is the order of the day in Nollywood and they (filmmakers) have even upgraded. Sometimes, they would promise one a role, have sex with one, collect one’s money, and then give one the script of a movie that has already been shot. It is that bad in Nollywood. Young girls who are desperate to be famous are usually taken advantage of”, she told Punch.

Speaking further, Nnaji said her instagram post was triggered by her findings on the scandal between another actress, Tonto Dikeh, and her ex-lover, Prince Kpokpogiri.

She said, “What actually triggered the post was the voice note I listened to on my colleague, Tonto Dike’s Instagram page. The person she was having the conversation with, Merit, is a close friend and I called the person to find out what led to the voice note. I found out that almost all the girls mentioned in the voice note had slept with Prince Kpokpogri. Yet, those are the same people that pretend a lot. They claim to be building careers but are actually into ‘runs’ (prostitution) behind closed doors. After listening to that voice note and getting more information from Merit, it dawned on me that this (being an actress) is more like advanced prostitution.”

“I used to be sad and broke down on what people wrote about me.

“Every time someone say something negative about me, I go home and absolve it; I let the negativity get me so much that I became what people thought I am,’’ Dikeh said.

The philanthropist said God gave her a second chance to build on her dreams and service to humanity.

According to her, I have since then decided to use every stone thrown on me for my personal good.

“In the past, everyone thought I would amount to nothing but today, the story is different as everyone wishes to be like Dikeh without minding the pains behind it.

“I have mastered my pain and controversy,’’ she said.

  • People feel women can’t succeed on their own in Nollywood- Linda Osifo

People feel women can’t succeed on their own in Nollywood- Linda Osifo

Actress, Linda Osifo has said that people have the wrong perception about actresses in Nollywood.

Shedding light on why women succeed more than men in the movie industry, Osifo who was a guest on ‘Rubbin Minds’ said:“As a woman, I’ve more options to get jobs than a man, I can advertise hair, shoes, clothes…I don’t think a man can really do that because we have more women population than men,” she said.

“So a woman gets more jobs that would create more avenues to make money for her. For instance, I’m a brand ambassador for skincare brands and that’s an industry where most men are unable to conquer because who’ll be their customers?

“Therefore, women have more opportunities to make money, that’s the way I see it. Is that why women succeed more that men in Nollywood? I don’t know but that’s how I see it.”

“We have this mindset that most women cannot succeed. In my case, I rejoice for my family whenever I achieve something and notice negative comments on the social media,” she added.

“I got to know people feel that most women can’t do it themselves and that’s a problem because there are many women who can.”

  • There is no longer discipline in Nollywood-Oga Bello

There is no longer discipline in Nollywood-Oga Bello

Veteran actor and filmmaker, Adebayo Salami has averred that discipline is now absent in the movie industry. The role interpreter made this known in a chat with Punch.

According to him: ”What I miss about the old movie industry is discipline. There is no longer discipline in the industry like before. In the good old days, we kept to time. Now people stroll to movie sets any time, though they make exceptions for veterans like me. I think it should not be like that. But, I must say that we have more talents in the movie industry. The industry is improving on a daily basis in terms of equipment, quality of movies and research.”

On why he is always in the midst of women, he said:” I like discussion, especially with females. Let people think what they want but I know what I’m gaining from them. Both old and young women are knowledgeable and it helps me when I want to write my stories. I always build my stories around women. Women are usually at the receiving end and I like to weave stories about their plight. I am not around them because I want something else from them. I am still young and I’m a content man. I have peace of mind. I don’t let things bother me and nothing shakes me. I only pray and leave all my worries at the feet of God. I’m also not a party goer; except the hosts are people close to me. I always spend at most one hour at any party I attend. I neither drink nor go to joints to take pepper soup. I like to watch the news and listen to music a lot.”

I have been sexually harassed in Nollywood -Anne Icha

Rising actress, Anne Icha has opened up on her sexual harassment experience in Nollywood.

The curvy role interpreter noted that there are things she would do and there are things she wouldn’t do.

Speaking in a chat with Pulseng, she said: “Yes I have been sexually harassed in Nollywood.I think I will still be sexually harassed. The truth of the matter is that I have come to a place in my own evolution as a person to know that there are things I will do and things I will not do. I will own the things I do and I will not apologize for the things I don’t do. If I am not interested in you, you can come with anything on the planet, I am not interested. It is a matter of value for me. If I am giving myself to someone, there has to be something behind it.For me, it’s a deeper thing beyond fame or a phone. Even if it is just pleasure, pleasure is deeper than a material thing. It is unfortunate that some women have to bend to it”.

Speaking further, ‘The Castle and Castle’ actress averred that fame is not her motive for becoming an actress.

“The reason why I am doing what I do is because I feel like there are people’s stories that needs to be told. One of the fundamental human needs is the need to be seen, that someone has noted your existence. That is why I want to tell stories .If I get to do it one time, I have fulfilled my purpose”.
