Internet Access: Google tasks FG on policies

Internet search giant, Google on Tuesday called on the Federal Government to formulate policies to deepen internet access by Nigerians.

Mr Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, the Communication and Public Affairs Manager, Anglophone West Africa of the company, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja.

Kola-Ogunlade said that the government always played a role in web content development by ensuring citizens had access to internet.

“For people to find content on the web they need to be online in the first place; we need adequate policies enabling the web search.

“Sometime ago, the Federal Government launched the broadband plan to enable many Nigerians connect online.

“Policies like that will really help.

“Out of about 68 million Nigerians internet users now, how many of them go online to read stories?

“The web helps us not only to consume information but also to export our own cultural stories,” Kola-Ogunlade said.

The officer commended Nollywood, the country’s movie industry, for playing a good role in exporting the stories of Nigeria.

According to him, many YouTube content creators produce their contents based on Nigeria’s cultural heritage and they have been able to attract target audience from all over the world.

He identified education as a great tool the government could employ to empower people in the area of acquiring digital skills and access to internet.

“Educating people on digital skills can improve the number of online entrepreneurs in the country.

“Education is also very important because it can avail people the access to the web.

“When we (Google) make our intention known to train a million people on digital skills in Africa last year, the Nigeria government was very supportive of it.

“Many young people have been able to attend the training; the government, through the office of the Vice President, organised some of the training.

“I won’t be surprised to see Nigeria’s online entrepreneurs from this initiative in the next few years if this training on digital skills is consistent.’’

The communication officer said that acquiring digital skills could only be driven successfully by the government.

In April 2016, Google at a news conference in Johannesburg, South Africa, announced its commitment to train one million young Africans in digital skills in the next one year.

The training was to enable young people, seeking to develop a digital career, become empowered in the area.

“Some actors are unknown, yet already packaging”- Bolanle Ninolowo

Bolanle Ninolowo is the new hunk in town, getting roles and showing that you can be talented and hot. The British returnee who has starred in movies like Husbands of Lagos isn’t happy with the way some of his colleagues carry themselves in Nollywood.

Speaking on what he doesn’t like in Nollywood, Bolanle condemns actors who are unknown but already believing their own hype. He made this known in a recent chat with Goldmyne Tv.

“Work your own journey that is what I see. A lot of people have so much fear in them and they are so competitive. Without understanding that everybody has a unique gift and a niche they could carve .

You need to ask God what you are made for. A lot of people are in this industry and they are not even supposed to be there.I used to run a record label, I spent 30million on it and I didn’t make a dime from it. After that I cried to God, got back up and asked him what is next for me.He said : “Go back to Nollywood, try again”. A lot of actors are nobody and they are already packaging. For who ? How can you want to grow and you already packaging, saying this is who I am” he said.

  • My problem with Nollywood- Mary Lazarus

Beautiful and talented Mary Lazarus is a role interpreter who strides Nollywood without a scandal. The African Magic Viewers Choice Awards(AMVCA) nominee started out as a model before she caught the acting bug.

In an interview with TheNewsGuru, the actress opened up on reasons she doesn’t appear in many movies .She also revealed that being stereotyped is one problem she has with Nollywood.

According to her:” I am selective when it comes to the roles I play and the scripts I get. I am selective because there are certain things I look out for in a script. I don’t like to be stereotyped. Take for instance, because I played the role of a maid in a film called Desperate House girls, and I got an award nominated for it, I just kept on receiving calls to come play that same role. The thing about filmmakers in Nigeria is that once you act a role and you bring the best out of it, they just keep giving you that kind of role and if care is not taken, you just see yourself playing only one particular role. “

  • We will deal with perpetrators of sexual harassment in Nollywood- Victor Osuagwu

Victor Osuagwu is a renowned actor and comedian in Nollywood known for his unique comic roles. The Former chairman of Lagos State chapter of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), in a recent interview spoke about the trend of sexual harrasment now prevalent in Nollywood.

In his words “It has been my nature to see challenges as entertainment. If you face it the hard way, you will not succeed. That was the way I handled some of the sexual harassment cases we had. This is sounding a note of warning, we will get you wherever you are and deal with you. What this set of people do is to organize ‘auditions’ and at the end of the day mess up girls.”

He also complained about the state of the industry , how upcoming acts do anything in the name of fame: “These days, before you are auditioned, you pay money, before you act, you pay money, to see yourself on screen, you pay money and that is why we are having wishy-washy production all over. This is not the AGN we are looking for.”

“Sometimes you also blame up and coming ones. When they tell you that they are ready to do anything, what do you do? A gullible producer, director, production assistant, personal assistant will rip you off because you can do anything. People are even buying laptops and expensive gifts just to be on posters but when you check their act in the whole film, it is just one scene.”

“And do you know one funny thing; this attitude has encouraged some green horns to buy their way into acting. They are not really actors. I remember in those days, once you are auditioned and you pass, you go through rehearsals but these days it doesn’t happen anymore.”

Moses Babatope, COO of FilmOne Distribution said:” 2016 has been an amazing year for Nigerian cinema. With returns of well over N200 million, The Wedding Party is on track to deliver numbers we have never seen before for a Nigerian film.
