NEDC accelerated resettlement process in N/East – Official

The Chairman, Governing Board, North East Development Commission (NEDC), retired Maj.-Gen. Paul Tarfa said that the Commission has accelerated resettlement of persons displaced by the Boko Haram insurgency in the region.

Tarfa said this on Tuesday in Maiduguri at a three-day capacity building workshop on conflict sensitive reporting, organised by the Commission for journalists.

He lauded President Muhammadu Buhari for the feat, adding that the establishment of the Commission fast track speedy return of peace to the troubled region.

“The activities of the NEDC fast track the return of relative peace to the troubled areas as victims of insurgency were being resettled and getting back their normal routine life,” he said.

He also commended journalists for publicising its activities, adding that this had made the public to be more aware of the existence and objectives of the Commission.

Also, NEDC’s Managing Director, Mr Mohammed Alkali said the training was designed to expise the participants to the necessary skills required in reporting conflict in a sensitive environment like the North-East.

He noted that the journalists based in the North-East region had done well in reporting the activities of NEDC since inception.

Alkali urged the participants to reflect in their reports the true situation of things in the region, stressing that, “what people outside the zone often hear was far from the reality on the ground”.

“Peace has been restored in the zone, and people are going back to their normal day business activities.

“In Maiduguri; now you can walk freely, go anywhere and do whatever legitimate business you wish to do. Unlike five or 10 years ago, I don’t think I’ll even want all of you to come here,” he said.

The Managing Director appreciated the Federal Government for its resolve towards tackling insecurity across the country through various channels, including NEDC.

    2023 elections: Tinubu’s chances in North-East predicted

The North-East Coordinator of the Tinubu Support Organization, Gov. Muhammad Yahaya of Gombe, says the chances of APC Presidential Candidate, Bola Tinubu in the region in the 2023 General Elections are very high.

Yahaya said this on Saturday in Minna when he visited ex-Nigerian leaders, retired Generals, Abdulsalam Abubakar and Ibrahim Babangida.

“Our chances in the north-east are very high indeed.

”We are strong in our resolve to win the 2023 General Elections and we shall succeed.

“It does not matter that the PDP presidential candidate is from North-East. Both Tinubu and Atiku are all my brothers.

”Nigeria is one and we are struggling to maintain it as a united and indivisible country.

“It doesn’t matter where they come from, what we need is the best for Nigeria,” Yahaya said.

Speaking about his visit to Minna to pay a visit to the elder statesmen and check on their health especially Abdulsalami who is just recuperating.

Yahaya said: “Abdulsalam is our father and elder statesman.

”Knowing him has been a blessing to us. I came to greet him as he recovers from his recent ailment.

” I pray that God will continue to see him through his life. “

He said that the two former leaders were carrying out their duties in guiding and advising the people on how to live together as one, saying that their efforts should be applauded.

Speaking about the state of insecurity across the country,  Yahaya, said that the state has been able to maintain its peace amidst diversity.

This, he said, was because the people had realized their differences early and worked to address them.

“In Gombe, you will find that some families have both Christians and Muslims,

” it is a cosmopolitan settlement and a small Nigeria.

“We realized our differences early on and seek to address them.

” We have tried to maintain peace and understanding in the spirit of nationhood and brotherhood”, Yahaya said.

Military eliminates 57 terrorists, top commanders

Troops Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) have eliminated more than 57 terrorists in different operations conducted from Aug. 11 to 25 in the North East, Defence Headquarters says.

The Director, Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Musa Danmadami, made this known at a bi-weekly news briefing of the Defence Headquarters on Thursday in Abuja.

Danmadami said the operations were conducted through land and air raids on the Boko Haram and Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) enclaves in Borno and Yobe.

He said the operation also led to the killing of unspecified number of terrorists in a number of airstrikes, with more than 18 of them seriously wounded.

He added that eight suspected terrorists and four terrorists’ logistic suppliers were apprehended as well as rescue of four civilian victims during the period.

According to him, a total of 1,652 BHT members and their families comprising of 320 adult males, 442 women and 890 children surrendered to troops at different location within the period.

“The air component on Aug. 20, carried out strikes on terrorists’ enclaves in Sambisa Forest and the Tumbuns in Borno with various degree of success recorded.

“Acting on credible intelligence about the gathering of terrorists at a location revealed to be the enclave of a notorious terrorist being hosted by a top-ranking commander.

“He is believed to be the ISWAP leader of Sambisa Forest who took over the leadership after the demise of Abubakar Shekau.

“Consequently, the air strikes were carried out on the enclave. Feedback revealed that 25 of the terrorists were neutralized in the strikes with 18 serious wounded.

“Among those neutralised was a high-profile commander known as Uzaifa, who was the ‘MINZIR’, which connotes the fourth in line of the terrorist leadership structure.

“Similar air strikes were conducted in the Tumbuns near Lake Chad at a location revealed to be the training camp of the terrorists.

“Reports revealed that scores of the terrorists were neutralised in the strikes.

“All recovered items and rescued civilians were handed over to relevant authorities while the surrendered Boko Haram terrorist members and their families were profiled for further action,’’ he said.

  • North East, only alternative to South East presidency – Orji Kalu

North East, only alternative to South East presidency – Orji Kalu

The Chief Whip of the Senate, Sen. Orji Kalu, says the North East remains the only alternative to the South East presidency.

Kalu, in a statement on Sunday in Abuja, reaffirmed his support to the North East in the absence of the Presidency being zoned to the South East by political parties.

Kalu said his position was because no Igbo man loved the Igbo people than he does.

A foremost nationalist, Chief Mbazuluike Amechi, had criticised Kalu for seemingly abandoning the quest for South East presidency and throwing his weight behind Senate President Ahmed Lawan.

Newsmen reports that Kalu who had been advocating for a South East presidency in 2023, had also in January announced his personal interest in the office.

However, in a recent statement, the former governor of Abia said he decided to withdraw from the race since there was “no zoning in APC’’.

“I have known Chief Mbazuluike Amaechi for the past 30 years and I have great respect for him.

“However, I totally disagree with him and his opinion about my support for the Senate President, Dr Ahmad Lawan.

“If we should stick to every of the expectations enumerated in the statement he allegedly signed, we would be making similar mistakes we made in the past.

“There is no Igbo man that loves Igbo people more than I do,’’ Kalu said.

Describing himself as a detribalised Nigerian, Kalu added that he remained a very realistic and optimistic Igbo man.

According to the former governor of Abia, people easily forgot the too many prices I have paid in defence of Ndigbo.

“Good politicians win elections before the elections take place and I genuinely want the South East to win.

“I expected that the president, after President Buhari, will emerge from the South East.

“That was why I was constantly urging all the political parties to be fair to every region of this country.

“The fairness which I talked about was about the South East and the North East, the two zones that are yet to produce the President of Nigeria.

“Unless the two parties zone their tickets to the South East, there is no fairness. I believe the zoning was the best means a South Easterner could become president,’’ Kalu said.

According to him, the South East supported the South West in 1999 and also supported the South South in 2011 and 2015.

“Former President Olusegun Obasanjo became President in 1999 because the South East and the South South supported the South West.

“Former President Goodluck Jonathan became president in 2011 because the South East and the South West supported the South South.

“So, what stops South West and South South aspirants from withdrawing from the race to support only the South East aspirants?

“In my previous statements, I applauded a couple of South West and South South elders who extended their support to our region and also called on other regions to consider the South East for President.

“However, we cannot continue to rely on oral support and mere statements when what is needed most is practical action.

“And what is this action? persuading and stopping your sons and kinsmen to drop their presidential ambition for the South East. Anything less than that is hypocritical and we cannot fall for it again.

“If all we do is to rely on statements and speeches of elder statesmen without taking decisive steps, we would be left behind politically again and we don’t want that to happen.

“If I am right, let posterity applaud me, if I am wrong, let it judge me,’’ Kalu said.

Governors donate N20m to Zamfara banditry victims

The North East Governors Forum on Monday donated N20 million to victims of banditry in Anka and Bukkuyum local government areas of Zamfara.

Gov. Babagana Zulum of Borno presented the cheque to Gov. Bello Matawalle on Monday in Government House Gusau.

Zulum who expressed sadness over the incident called on the traditional and religious leaders as well as the people of the state to embark on consistent prayers to end the menace.

He described the incident that led to the killing of 58 persons in eight communities of Anka and Bukuyum local government areas as devastating.

“On behalf of northeast progressive governors forum, we commiserate with Zamfara state government and people affected with bandits attack,” Zulum said.

Zulum noted with concern the alarming rate of banditry and kidnapping in Zone and called for collaboration between the government and the people to end the situation.

“I didn’t say people should take up arms but communities, religious leaders, traditional institutions and all critical stakeholders must work together to find a lasting solution of insecurity in the northwest,” the governor said.

He said Borno and Zamfara were faced with similar insecurity situations.

He said Borno was winning the fight against the insurgents.

Receiving the cheque, Matawalle thanked the Forum for the support and promised to work harder to end the insecurity situation in the state.

Matawalle said with different measures being taken by his government, the insecurity in the state would soon be history.

He thanked the forum and Gov Zulum for their love and show of concern to the people of Zamfara.

Zulum was accompanied by the Chairman Senate Committee on Army, Mohammed Ndume, Muhammed Munguno, among others

UN relief chief pledges support for Nigeria in rebuilding Northeast

The UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Martin Griffiths has pledged to support Nigeria to help rebuild the lives of those affected by violence in the Northeast.

The UN humanitarian affairs chief who made the pledge at the end of his four-day visit to Nigeria, said the UN would do everything to support the country.

According to him, UN will help Nigeria to build the lives of vulnerable families who have been impacted by violence in the Northeast.

The UN humanitarian affairs chief travelled to Nigeria to see firsthand, the humanitarian situation and response in the Northeast.

He was also in Nigeria to raise international awareness about the deteriorating humanitarian situation and bring attention to the ongoing regional conflict affecting the Lake Chad Basin.

The UN relief chief met the Vice-President, Yemi Osinbajo, the Chief of Defence Staff Lucky Irabor and some federal government officials

He also met with the Governor of Borno State, Babagana Zulum, where the extremist group Boko Haram launched its Islamist insurgency in 2009 that has spread to neighbouring countries, Cameroon, Niger, and Chad.

In the northeast, he met with Nigerians who have been affected by the violence, as well as humanitarian partners, in Maiduguri, Bama, and Damasak.

The conflict in the Lake Chad basin has taken a heavy toll on communities across border areas of the affected countries, putting more than 10 million people at risk and in need of humanitarian assistance.

During his visit to Damasak, on the border with Niger, Griffiths heard from women and families displaced by the violence.

They told him of their hopes to return home, yet they despaired that they were unable to plan for a better future given continuing insecurity and attacks by armed groups.

Griffiths said: “It’s heartbreaking to see the deep impact of the violence and repeated displacement for so many.

“Yet the people I met demonstrated amazing courage in the face of vicious violence, killings, kidnappings, repeated displacement and sometimes bare survival.

“In Bama, women told stories of having escaped from years of armed group captivity only weeks ago. It is our duty to help them rebuild their lives.”

He said the governor of Borno State, had conveyed the commitment of authorities to improve security and build resilience for the most vulnerable.

“We will redouble our collective efforts to improve protection of civilians and humanitarian access, and seek durable solutions out of crisis wherever possible,” the UN humanitarian chief added.

“It is clear we share a common objective: upholding the dignity of Nigerians and finding ways to ease the suffering too many of them face today.

“People are yearning for security, livelihoods and better access to social services, and we stand ready to make this a reality with the Government and our humanitarian partners,” he said.

Griffiths heard firsthand from those working on the aid frontline: “Brave humanitarian workers, most of them Nigerians themselves, work tirelessly and often at great personal risk to help others.

“I deeply admire their commitment and, in turn, commit myself to advocating for their safety, and for the necessary support to the people they serve.”

In 2021, the humanitarian community reached more than five million people in need in Nigeria.

The 2022 Nigeria Humanitarian Response Plan, slated for launch in February, requires over one billion dollars.

It sets out the humanitarian community’s plan to assist 8.4 million people in need this year.

Its time to conclude North-East insurgency and move on to other businesses – COAS

The Chief of Army Staff, Major-General Farouk Yahaya on Saturday said the army is committed to ending the insurgency in the North-East.

The army chief made the comment while on an operation visit to frontline troops of Sector 2, Joint Taskforce of the Nigeria Army ‘Operation Hadin Kai’ in Damaturu, Yobe State.

Major-General Yahaya said ending the insurgency will allow the army move on to other things.

The North-East insurgency has roiled on for over a decade, spearheaded by terrorist groups such as Boko Haram and now ISWAP.

“We want to conclude this operation in the North-East,” Major-General Yahaya said, “so that we can do other things; and that is the drive now.”

After inspecting the Quarter Guard in his honour, the Chief of Army Staff was received by the Commander of the Sector 2, Brigadier-General Adamu Nura, alongside other senior officers of the command.

Addressing the troops, the Chief of Army Staff said the purpose of his visit was to familiarise himself with the challenges faced by the troops and ensure those challenges are tackled.

He pledged to work with other military branches, host communities, and sister agencies to restore peace in the region.

“We have been recording some modest success in all areas and we intend to sustain that drive,” he said.

Major-General Yahaya was last at the command on the entourage of the immediate past late Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant-General Ibrahim Attahiru on March 14.

Earlier on Friday, Major-General Yahaya had visited the Shehu of Borno, HRH Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai Elkanemi to seek the collaboration of the traditional institution, as part of strategies to end the insurgency.

The army chief, at the meeting, said such collaborations have paid off in the past.

The Shehu said his institution was committed to supporting the military in the area of intel gathering but warned military authorities against revealing the source of their information like they did in the past.

This unprofessional conduct of early commanders of the counter insurgency war had endangered many leading to mistrust for the military, the traditional ruler said.

The Shehu also said the COAS should prioritize building on past successes by keeping remote roads safe for farmers’ ease of passage.

North East region peaceful because of your collective efforts – Buhari salutes Army

President Muhammadu Buhari has urged the military and other security agents not to give breathing space to terrorists and criminals in the country.

The President gave the charge on Thursday while addressing personnel of the Armed Forces and security agencies in Operation Hadin Kai at the Maimalari Cantonment during a visit to Borno State.

He said the war against insurgency must be concluded with the restoration of peace and reconstruction of all the affected areas.

“While acknowledging your collective efforts at decimating and degrading the terrorists and reaffirming the inviolable sovereignty of our nation, I also wish to extol your steadfastness and untiring efforts in the face of the difficulties you experience in the Theatres of Operation.

“We should not allow our adversaries the opportunity or breathing space to challenge or undermine our national interests and core values. The defence and security agencies should rest assured of the Federal Government’s unalloyed commitment to winning the battle against terror and criminality.

“Your collective efforts have resulted in the relative peace being enjoyed in the region today. Under my watch, the Armed Forces of Nigeria have been provided a firm strategy and clear sense of direction to safeguard the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country,” the President said.

President Buhari also said the nation owes a debt of gratitude to military men and women, and security agencies currently tackling security challenges in the country, particularly the many who paid the supreme price.

He assured that the government will continue to support all the loved ones.

” I want to seize this opportunity to put it on record that our nation will forever be indebted to you, for your patriotic commitment to the defence of our fatherland against insurgency and criminality.

“I, therefore, commend you and remember all the personnel who have paid the supreme sacrifice in ensuring that Nigeria remains an indivisible and secure entity.

“As I send my heartfelt condolences to the families of our fallen heroes and pray for the souls of the departed, I want to assure you that my administration will spare no effort or resources to ensure that the widows and children of our fallen heroes who paid the supreme price in defence of our beloved country are well cared for,” he said.

The President said wounded comrades will get the best medical attention towards their full recovery and commended the military and security agencies for the synergy that translated into successes in restoring peace and order.

“I am particularly happy to note the increasing understanding and cooperation within the military, as well as the inter-agency cooperation in the fight against the terrorists and other criminal elements in the North East.

“The outcome of this synergy is evidenced by the successes recorded in the ongoing Operation TURA TAKAIBANGO which has so far degraded the insurgents’ capabilities in the Timbuktu Triangle, Sambisa Forest and the Lake Chad Region. I am therefore pleased to acknowledge that the military and other security agencies including civilian stakeholders are adhering to the true spirit of Operation HADIN KAI which implies “jointness, synergy and cooperation.”

“By pooling together the collective resources and comparative advantages of the Armed Forces and other security agencies, we hope the enemy will now feel the ferocity of our firepower and the weight of our resolve,” the President said.

Buhari also assured that his administration is developing a strategy for post-war reconstruction and peace-building.

“Concerted efforts are being made to fast-track reconstruction and development programmes in the affected communities in the North East.

“I am hopeful that this will lead to the speedy resettlement of displaced persons, as well as the restoration of bubbling community life as people return to their homes.

“Alongside investment in development and reconstruction, we will sustain our investment in the Armed Forces in a manner that balances the carrot and stick,” he said.

The President said several interventions by the Federal Government had led to the procurement and delivery of large consignments of critical combat enablers, including high calibre weapons and ammunition.

“Many have been injected into the Theatre and soon other equipment that have just arrived in the country would also be deployed to the Theatre of operations. Much more equipment will be procured for the Armed Forces to cater for both the short and long-term requirements.

“I would like, at this point, to also commend the hierarchy of our Armed Forces for their strategic foresight in ensuring that some of our critical military equipment are fabricated locally.”

In his remarks, the Commander of Theatre Operations HADIN KAI, Maj Gen. Felix Omoigui, assured troops of the President’s confidence and commitment to their welfare, especially in bringing the war to a conclusive end.

The Commander thanked the President for the visit to the troops, which he said will greatly boost the morale of all those fighting to keep the country in peace.

Governors of Borno and Yobe State, Babagana Zulum and Mai Bunu respectively, Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Leo Irabor, Chief of Army Staff, Maj. Gen Farouk Yahaya, Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Awwal Gambo, Chief of Staff, Air Vice Marshal Isiaka Amao and National Security Adviser, Maj Gen. Babagana Monguno (rtd), were also at the event.

NCC assures on restoration of full telecoms service in North East

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has assured telecommunications operators of speedy restoration of service in North East, following vandalisation of telecoms fibres in Borno and Yobe.

NCC Executive Vice-Chairman, Prof. Umar Danbatta said this at a Stakeholders Consultative Forum on Implementation of the National Broadband Policy 2020-2025, on Monday in Abuja.

Danbatta said that the fibre infrastructure has been vandalised again by unknown persons cutting millions of people off lines in the North East.

He assured operators of quick restoration of service, while noting that the development constituted a breach of national security.

The operators had earlier complained that some North Eastern cities had been cut off from communications from both within and outside.

Responding to concerns raised by representatives of MTN and Airtel, Danbatta assured of immediate action on the problem.

“Yes, we are aware of the cut of fibre infrastructure in the North East last Friday. We took up the matter immediately.

“But reports reaching me right now indicate that some labourers are responsible. And that they have cut it again as of today,” he said.

Danbatta said that the attention of the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) as well as that of the Borno Government had been drawn to the issue.

He said that the matter would be addressed through dialogue, just like the NCC engaged the Nigeria Customs Service in dialogue when it ordered the stoppage of supplies of diesel to base stations in border communities in the country.

Dr Isa Pantami, Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, urged NCC and stakeholders to create a database of critical telecommunications infrastructure and their locations in order to halt incessant attacks on telecoms infrastructure in the country.

Mr Ubale Maska, Chairman, Broadband Implementation Steering Committee (BISC), tasked the stakeholders on robust deliberations that would lead to successful implementation of its goal.

The event featured a presentation, outlining the blueprint of the committee, indicating its targets.

Heads of Agencies under Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy were in attendance at the event.
