  • Sultan to Northern Governors: We must stop being lazy to solve our problems

Apparently angry over the many sufferings peculiar to people in the northern region of Nigeria, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Saad Abubakar, yesterday, warned that the lazy attitude of some northern governors to governance is affecting possibilities of turning around the poor situation of the north.

Abubakar who made the statement during a joint meeting of the Northern Governors’ Forum and traditional rulers at Sir Kashim Ibrahim House in Kaduna yesterday, said the northern elite must throw away their lazy attitude.

The sultan urged traditional and religious leaders to guard their utterances and avoid inciting words which could cause chaos, saying that negative stories could be circulated by rumour mongers on the social media.

“During our last meeting six months ago, we spent a lot of time to discuss many things, but from the earlier discussion, is the north much better now than we were six months ago? If yes, it means we are making progress, if no, why?

“All that has been the problem is to implement decisions taken at such a meeting by everybody. I think we are not short of solutions to all our problems, what we are short of, all of us, is sincerity and commitment to really do what we say publicly. If we don’t change, our situation will continue to get worse.

“At this meeting, we need to discuss what came out of the January meeting, how far we have gone in trying to implement some of the decisions we have taken and chart the way forward.

“I should remind us, so many of us who are also religious leaders, to be cautious over inciting utterances and ambiguous words on issues that shouldn’t have been brought up.

“What we do or how we go about some of these issues, you don’t make ambiguous statements which will be very difficult to withdraw. We are aware of the implications because the social media is so negative now that people formulate stories that never existed and polish them to be true,” the monarch cautioned.

While commending some governors for hard work and resilience with regard to education in the north, he said the traditional rulers were collectively committed to making the north the envy of the rest of the world.

“But we have to and we must be up and doing, we must throw away our lazy attitude because whatever problems we have in our region, we are more educated to find solution to them. I assure you of our support, and you must continue to see us (traditional rulers) as partners in this long and tough journey to emancipating our people from the grip of poverty and lazy life.”

The governors cautioned those agitating for restructuring of the country and the protagonists of the Republic of Biafra against endangering the unity of Nigeria, saying that the nation might not survive under such divisive tendencies.

The Chairman of the Northern Governors’ Forum’s and Governor of Borno State, Kashim Shettima who spoke at the meeting listed the current issues threatening the unity of the nation as the agitation for restructuring, creation of a Biafran State and the Fulani herdsmen’s attacks on communities. He urged prompt action to tackle these issues.

Shettima, who was represented by the Governor of Katsina State, Aminu Masari at the two-day meeting which began yesterday, said: “Agreed that being citizens of a democratic country, Nigerians are entitled to exercising their constitutionally guaranteed freedom of speech and association, and the clamour for the restructuring of the country falls within the purview of these freedoms. But the exercise of such rights outside the confines of responsibility is not acceptable.

“The resort to shenanigans, hate speech, and sometimes incitement to violence by organisations such as IPOB and MASSOB must be unconditionally condemned as they are inimical to national unity, stability, peaceful coexistence and national security.

“These elements must be encouraged to pursue their agitations within processes enshrined in our constitution and with the full and willing participation of all parts of our nation.”

The governor urged southern leaders to condemn the agitation the way northern leaders condemned the ultimatum given by some northern youths to Igbo residing in the north to leave by October 1.

On the dangers allegedly posed by those agitating for restructuring and a Biafran State, the northern governors drew attention to contemporary history of countries where such tendencies led to destabilisation.

“We must constantly be aware of the terrain and times. We have a country that has gone through a civil war, military coups and counter-coups, some of them bloody, prolonged military dictatorships, several false starts as a democracy, insurgency and banditry and a huge youth population whose huge expectations are far from being met. Our peculiar circumstances have made it difficult to deliver and what we need is trust and hope to see us through the difficult times. We shall overcome, but we need all the survival techniques our collective talent can muster.”

The governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, in an address, said: “We commend the resilience of our communities in the North-East which has begun the process of recovery from the ravages of insurgency.

“Security remains a challenge across our states. The frequency and savagery of communal clashes in some of our states, and the prevalence of untoward phenomena such as rural banditry, cattle-rustling and kidnapping need to be tackled. The festering sores left by previous conflicts in which proper closure, accountability for crimes and reconciliation were not effected appear to be accelerating a descent into impunity and a situation in which many elites are too short-sighted to recognise the dangers of embroiling our communities in repeated cycles of violence.”

  • Restructuring: Northern governors, monarchs meet in Kaduna

The Northern Governors Forum, comprising governors of the 19 Northern states on Thursday met in Kaduna to tackle the problem devoid of parochial sentiments.

The meeting also included traditional rulers from the region.

According to reports, only governors of Borno, Benue, Kano and Zamfara states who are visiting President Muhammadu Buhari in London were absent.

The meeting also discussed the disturbing insecurity occasioned by the farmers, herders’ clashes as well as the problem of the girl-child education in the North.

Katsina State governor, Aminu Masari said the regional governors and the monarchs would make the North’s stand on restructuring known after the two-day meeting on Friday.

He urged those clamouring for the restructuring of the country and other agitators to do so within the ambit of the law of the land.

Shettima took exception to the activities of the Indigenous People of Biafra and the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra.

He said another problem is Boko Haram insurgency in the North-East, which had resulted in the “massive destruction of lives and communities’ property, mass displacement of persons, threat to food security and social dislocation arising from the forced and sudden emergence of thousands of orphans and widows.”

“There are also the deeply rooted issues of child destitution thrown up by the Almajiri system, alarmingly fallen standard of public education system, youth employment and restiveness, drug peddling and abuse, and sectarian violence,” he added.

Shettima said, “We must wear our thinking caps to find immediate and lasting solutions to these teething problems otherwise we will get drowned by them.”

Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, in his welcome address, expressed concern over the continued insecurity in the North.

“The frequency and savagery of communal clashes in some of our states, and the prevalence of untoward phenomena such as rural banditry, cattle-rustling and kidnapping need to be tackled,” he added.

Emir and chiefs who attended the meeting include, Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III; Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Umar Ibn Garbai El-Kanemi; Emir of Gwandu, Maj. Gen Muhammad Bashir (retd.); Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II; Emir of Bauchi, Rilwanu Suleiman Adamu; Emir of Katsina, Dr. Abdulmumini Usman; and Etsu-Nupe, Dr. Yahaya Abubakar.

  • Northern Governors Forum disowns Arewa youth over 30-day ultimatum to Igbos

Northern Governors Forum disowns Arewa youth over 30-day ultimatum to Igbos

Governors of the nineteen northern States on Wednesday, disowned a coalition of Northern Youths, led by the Areas, who reportedly issued a 30-day ultimatum to Igbos to vacate the Northern region.

‎Borno Governor and Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum, Kashim Shettima, spoke on behalf of his colleagues in Maiduguri on Wednesday.

The forum said they are in touch with heads of their security agencies and have taken measures that will guarantee the rights of all Nigerians to live in of the 19 States in the thre geo-political zones within the north, NTA reports.

“On behalf of the Governors of the 19 Northern States, we totally condemn such irresponsible pronouncements by those groups, we condemn, we disown, and we are totally distancing ourselves from those faceless groups who don’t have the mandate of the people of Northern Nigeria to make such loud pronouncements.

“Section 41, Subsection 1 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is very explicit in safeguarding the rights of all Nigerians to reside in any part of the country with no hindrance whatsoever. But then, ‎when you see a toad dancing in the broad daylight, the drummer is not far off from the main road.

“We wish to call on the security agencies to beam their lenses on these groups, and unearth the faces behind the mask.

“Some months back, there were cases of importation of arms, illegal importation of arms intercepted at the ports, then we started hearing rumours of a coup d’etat.

“Now, a group, or a bunch of groups that do not have the mandate of the people came up with remarks capable of destabilizing the north and the country as a whole.

“We are one nation tied to a common destiny, the governance of Northern Nigeria is not in alignment with those pronouncements, and we will take whatever measures that is necessary to safeguard the lives and properties of Nigerians living in any part of the North.

“I am in contact to most of my colleagues, and they all talking to heads of security establishments in their respective overnorsdomains because we cannot afford to take chances.

“We cannot afford to toil with the destiny of this country. The 19 Northern Governors wish to call on our brothers of Igbo descent to remain calm and go about their legitimate businesses.

“Nobody can dare to intimidate, harass or dehumanize them in any of the 19 Northern States, our Governors will not allow that” Shettima said.

  • Herdsmen wreaking havoc in Nigeria are from Senegal, Mali – Northern governors

The Northern Governor’s Forum, NGF, has said Fulani herdsmen attacking Nigerians are from neighbouring Senegal and Mali.

The forum however resolved t o work with relevant authorities and stakeholders to secure the nations borders and also ensure registration of all Fulani immigrants entering the country to rear cattle.

The Chairman of the Forum, Kashim Shettima of Borno, disclosed this to journalists at the end of the forum’s meeting in Kaduna, on Tuesday

In Shettima’s words: “We also mapped out new strategies that would be used by the local Fulani herdsmen to rear their cattle without having to move across the country.”

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the chairman emphasised the need for every Nigerian to see security as his or her business, pointing out that the nation would remain backward if there was no peace.

On the indigene/settler dichotomy, the governor said that there was a push by the forum towards national integration and cohesion so that every Nigerian could conveniently settle in any part of the country without suffering any form of discrimination.

“Some of the past governors of Kano State, like the late Sabo Bakin Zawo, from Niger, and Ibrahim Shekarau, from Borno, were not indigenes technically, but were assimilated and even attained the highest office in Kano,” he observed.

He acknowledged that the country was experiencing lots of challenges, particularly in the northern region, but expressed optimism that things would get better.

The joint meeting, which had northern traditional council of emirs and chiefs in attendance, discussed issues of insecurity, the management of common assets and measures to move the region to greater heights.

  • Buhari saved Nigeria from extinction, says Northern governors

Buhari saved Nigeria from extinction, says Northern governors

The Northern Governors Forum (NGF) on Tuesday said that President Muhammadu Buhari’s victory in 2015 saved Nigeria from going into extinction.

The Chairman of NGF and Borno Gov. Kashim Shettima said this when he led a delegation on a courtesy call on Sen. George Akume; Tor Tiv V, His Royal Majesty Prof. James Ayatse, and Gov. Samuel Ortom in Makurdi.

Other governors on the delegation were Mohammed Abubakar and Abdullahi Gunduje of of Bauchi and Kano states, respectively.

Shettima described the outcome of the 2015 general election as the watershed in the Nigerian political history and commended Benue people for their continuous support of Northern agenda.

He noted that the PDP-led administration was at the verge of destroying the basic component that bonded Nigeria, adding that Buhari’s victory saved the country.

“Had President Buhari not win the election in 2015, Nigeria would have gone into extinction and as it is now, the PDP need to be proscribed.

“The North had moral duty to support Benue state following her continuous support of presidential candidates from the region,” said the NGF chairman.

He also explained that they were in the state to celebrate with the Tiv people for the peaceful selection of the Tor Tiv V, His Royal Majesty Prof. James Ayatse.

Shettima sympathised with Tiv people over the incessant attacks on their communities by suspected herdsmen, adding that the NGF would never abandon the state.

He also noted that Benue and Kano states were only the states in the North with a large heart to accommodate non-indigenes over the years as exemplified in appointments and elective positions.

He announced a donation of 100 cows as his personal contribution for the coronation of the Tor Tiv V.

Ayatse had earlier commended the NGF for identifying with the Tiv people during their moment of sadness and joy, adding that he cherished the Tor Tiv thrown he had ascended.

Akume urged the NGF to support Ortom to actualize his vision and invited the forum to attend the coronation of the fifth Tor Tiv.

On his part, Ortom commended the NGF members for their sustained support of his proposals that led to the end of herdsmen/farmers crisis in the state.

The governor thanked God for the relative peace enjoyed in the state so far and commended Shettima’s leadership quality.
