SUPERLATIVE! Nigerian-born striker, Obi scores 7 goals as Arsenal wallop Norwich City 9-0

Arsenal youngster, Chido Martin Obi, scored an incredible seven times as the club’s U-18 side beat Norwich City 9-0 on Saturday.

The 16-year-old netted five goals in the first half.

Martin Obi scored the first of his two hat-tricks within 17 minutes of the match.

He added another two after the break to take his tally to 24 goals in his last seven games.

The Danish forward’s biggest haul of the season, however, remains the 10 he scored in one game, as Arsenal’s U-16 thrashed Liverpool 14-3 in November.

This result leaves Arsenal third in the U-18 Premier League South, seven points behind leaders Chelsea who have a game in hand on them and second-placed West Ham United.

Martin Obi has a Nigerian father and a Danish mother. He has played for both Denmark and England at international youth level.

Ronaldo’s hat-trick rescues Manchester United against Norwich

Cristiano Ronaldo’s 50th club career hat-trick dug Manchester United out of a hole against lowly Norwich City as the under-par Red Devils won 3-2 at Old Trafford.

The 37-year-old’s treble was his second in his past three Premier League appearances.

It took him to 21 goals for the season, going through the 20 barrier for a 16th consecutive campaign.

Ronaldo moved to 99 Premier League goals in his career, and Manchester United could only thank him for sparing them a potentially embarrassing afternoon.

He put Manchester United two up early on, but Norwich hit back through Kieran Dowell and Teemu Pukki.

But the former Real Madrid and Juventus star lashed a free-kick winner through the grasp of Tim Krul in the 76th minute.

David de Gea sprinted from his line to expertly block Pukki’s attempted dink over the goalkeeper in the third minute, and Norwich would soon regret failing to take that golden chance.

Ronaldo saw a fizzing 20-yard shot saved by Krul in the seventh minute.

But seconds later the Manchester United man did better, with Anthony Elanga dispossessing Ben Gibson in the penalty area and squaring for an easy close-range finish.

Manchester United kept pressing against opponents who at that point appeared ripe to be picked off.

Ronaldo got their second in the 32nd minute when he headed a corner-kick from the right by Alex Telles past Krul.

Norwich surprisingly got one back in first-half stoppage time when Pukki’s cross from the left was nodded in at the far post by an unmarked Dowell.

Incredibly, having been outplayed for so long, Norwich got level after 52 minutes.

That was when Pukki tucked past De Gea after Dowell played him in and the striker stayed just onside.

Manchester United lacked coherence in attack and were out of sorts throughout.

De Gea had to save well from Milot Rashica to keep the hosts on level terms, but then up stepped Ronaldo from 25 yards to save the day.

  • Salah, Mane, Diaz score as Liverpool comeback win over Norwich City

Salah, Mane, Diaz score as Liverpool comeback win over Norwich City

Second-half goals from Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz, helped Liverpool come from behind to claim a 3-1 victory against relegation-battlers Norwich City at Anfield on Saturday.

An upset looked to be on the cards when Milot Rashica handed Norwich the lead in the 48 minute as he skipped past Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain before striking home.

However, Mane struck back with a superb acrobatic effort shortly after, and Salah put Liverpool ahead just three minutes later with his 150th goal for the club.

January arrival, Diaz ended doubts of a Norwich comeback in the 83rd minute when he opened his Liverpool account with a delightful chip over opposing goalkeeper Angus Gunn.

The result put a dent in Norwich’s hopes of staying off relegation, with Dean Smith’s side failing to keep pace with 17th-place Newcastle United, who earned a draw away to West Ham United earlier on Saturday.

Liverpool remain in second place on 57 points after 25 games.

  • EPL relegation, promotion must be decided on the pitch – Norwich

English Premier League (EPL) clubs should be relegated only if both of the top two divisions restart and complete the season, Stuart Webber, the sporting director of Norwich City, says.

The Canaries are six points below the safety line with nine games to play.

Webber however said on Wednesday it would be unfair to relegate or promote clubs based on an incomplete season.

“It’s fine if we restart and three clubs get relegated,” he said. “Football should be played on a pitch and not in the boardroom.

“But the Championship (second tier) has to restart and play all their games also.

“What we cannot accept is a situation where we play out all our games, get relegated but then the Championship can’t play… and then they automatically promote some teams who haven’t finished the season.”

Premier League clubs are in discussions to finish the season, with the possibility of a restart next month given a boost when the government said elite sports could return after June 1.

The fate of lower divisions remains uncertain.

The media has since reported that top-flight clubs would have to spend a combined four million pounds (4.92 million dollars) on testing players for COVID-19.

Such an outlay would likely be beyond the resources of smaller clubs who are reliant on gate receipts but have already furloughed staff and would not be allowed to admit spectators.

Bottom side Norwich were among those who opposed plans for Premier League games to be held at neutral venues to limit the risk of supporters turning up.

But clubs now hope such a measure can be avoided.

Webber was critical of the way the debate had been framed last week.

There had been accusations that those threatened with the drop were using concerns about neutral venues as an excuse to try and avoid relegation.

“I’m just glad that’s been levelled up a bit this week and it’s no surprise that once bigger clubs than us talk about it suddenly people want to get around the table and don’t want to beat us up any more,” he said.

“I think (the) most important (thing) is that we try and find a way of getting back (to) playing where it’s safe and where the competition is fair.

“What we can’t do is play it all out in the media and when an agenda suits us we beat up clubs for suggesting that playing in neutral venues might not be fair.”

  • EPL: Wood scores twice as Burnley bring Norwich City down

EPL: Wood scores twice as Burnley bring Norwich City down

Chris Wood scored a superb first half brace to help Burnley outclass Norwich City 2-0 at Turf Moor on Saturday and return to winning ways in the English Premier League.

The result snapped Burnley’s winless run of four games since they beat Southampton 3-0 on the opening day of the 2019/2020 EPL campaign.

It also gave Daniel Farke’s Norwich a reality check following their 3-2 upset of defending champions Manchester City last weekend.

Forward Wood put Burnley ahead in the 10th minute with his first league goal since April, guiding his header past Norwich goalkeeper Tim Krul at point-blank range.

Ashley Westwood had whipped in a perfect ball from the corner.

Norwich paid the price for giving away possession cheaply as New Zealander Wood doubled Burnley’s lead four minutes later.

He met midfielder Dwight McNeil’s drilled pass from the left with a crisp left-footed shot that gave Krul no chance.

Midfielder Moritz Leitner, who came on in the opening half for the injured Alexander Tettey, had Norwich’s best chance of the game in the 23rd minute.

However, his fierce shot from distance only rattled the post with Nick Pope beaten.

Sean Dyche’s Burnley, who have collected eight points from six matches, next travel to Aston Villa while Norwich visit Crystal Palace.
