  • Police, NIS sign MoU on Interpol

The Nigeria Police Force and the Nigeria Immigration Service ( NIS), on Thursday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the extension of the use of INTERPOL i-24/7 to the service.

The Inspector-General of Police, Mr Ibrahim Idris who was represented by the DIG in charge of Operations, Mr Habila Joshak signed on behalf of the police.

The Comptroller-General of Immigration, Mr Muhammed Babandede who signed on behalf of the service, was also represented by Mr Raymond Jaja, Deputy Comptroller-General of Immigration in charge of border management.

Idris said that the signing of the MoU would afford other law enforcement agencies in the country access to critical intelligence information on the organisation’s system.

He also said that the initiative would allow the conduct of joint national and transnational operational collaboration and as well capacity building between the agencies.

“This access when fully operational will optimally lead to a corresponding increase in the arrest of fugitives, wanted persons among others.

He added that the office of the National Security Adviser has promised to implement the programme through coordinated meetings.

The police boss said that plans were at advance stage to present MoU and other INTERPOL documents to all relevant law enforcement agencies in the country,

He said that the collaboration between the agencies would enhance the operations of their officers on the field.

Idris noted that sharing of intelligence information had nothing to do with superiority of service.

Babandede said that the signing of the MoU was an index to the commitment of the Federal Government to end criminality in the country.

He assured that the service would implement the MoU in view of the security challenge in the country.

The immigration boss also said that it gives the service a better opportunity to fish out criminally minded persons who come into the country illegally.

“The Nigeria Immigration Service will be more than ever prepared to share this synergy with other law enforcement agencies in the country,” he said.

In his remark, the Commissioner of Police in charge of INTERPOL, Mr Olushola Subair said that the MoU was aimed at intensifying the fight against crimes in the country.

He said that the NIS was an important ally to the police in fighting crimes in the country.

Subair added that with the signing of the MoU, criminals would no longer have any hiding place in the country.

TheNewsGuru reports that the NIS was the first law enforcement agency to sign the MoU.

TheNewsGuru also reports that the IG officially inaugurated the refurbished National Central Bureau Headquarters, Abuja and the upgrade of INTERPOL in January.

  • Evans drags Police IG, 3 others to court over prolonged detention

Billionaire kidnapper, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike a.k.a. Evans, has dragged the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris before the Federal High Court in Lagos over alleged illegal detention.

Joined as respondents in the motion he filed by his lawyers are the Nigeria Police Force, Commissioner of Police, Lagos State and the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Lagos State Police Command.

In a fundamental rights enforcement suit filed on his behalf by a Lagos-based lawyer, Olukoya Ogungbeje, the suspected kidnapper is praying for the order of court to direct the respondents to immediately charge him to court if there is any case against him in accordance with Sections 35 (1) (c) (3) (4) (5) (a) (b) and 36 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

In the alternative, he prayed the court for an order compelling the respondents to immediately release him unconditionally in the absence of any offence that will warrant his being charged to court.

Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, is advocating for the imposition of death sentence on convicted kidnappers as a deterrent for others who might want to embark on the heinous crime in future.

The IGP, speaking at a dialogue session he held with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), under the umbrella of Situation Room, in Abuja on Friday, said the case of recently apprehended kidnap kingpin, Chukwudidumeme Onuamadike, a.k.a Evans, should be used to set an example.

Idris lamented that Evans “has changed the face of kidnapping in this country”, saying the fact that he collected $1million ransom on six different occasions, was enough to lure some youths into the evil act.

The police boss stated that the existing laws on kidnapping needed to be reviewed to ensure stiffer punishment for culprits.

“We should start looking at punishment and the possibility of establishing special courts to address issues of kidnapping.

“On daily basis we are arresting hundreds of suspects. We should look for a way to review our laws and impose sanctions like we have in some states like Anambra, Lagos, Kano and Imo.

“We need to review those punishments, we should have a time frame for conclusion of trial of suspects.

  • Why Wike’s CSO was withdrawn – NPF

Why Wike’s CSO was withdrawn – NPF

The Nigeria Police Force, NPF has finally broken the silence on what led to the withdrawal of the Chief Security Officer, CSO to the Rivers State Governor, DSP Promise Nwosu.

The NPF said it redeployed Nwosu for taking part in a political rally organised by the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Describing his action as gross professional misconduct, it stated that Nwosu was found among the protesting party faithful on November 17, 2016, in a manner detrimental to profession.

This was contained in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja, by the Force Public Relations, Donald Awunah.

The statement was in reaction to allegations by the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, that the CSO’s withdrawal was meant to make him vulnerable to physical attacks during the forthcoming legislative rerun in the state.

Recall that Wike had announced the withdrawal of his CSO last Monday and alleged that the police were partisan and plotting to compromise his security, stressing that he was looking up to God and the youths to protect him.

However, in a reaction to the allegation, the police stated that the CSO’s participation in the political rally of an opposition party to the governor in a clandestine and suspicious manner was considered mischievous and detrimental to the security of the state and public order and also contrary to his oath of office which constituted an offence.

The statement reads in part: “In the course of monitoring the public protest, an Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations in Rivers State observed the presence of the CSO among the protesting partisan crowd as illegal, unlawful and outside prescribed schedule of the duties of a CSO.

“The active presence of the CSO to the governor in a partisan crowd of an opposition party to the governor in a clandestine and suspicious manner was considered mischievous and detrimental to the security of the state and public order and also contrary to his oath of office which constitute an offence against discipline.

“The CSO to the governor, when challenged by a superior officer demonstrated brazen indiscipline and showed disrespect to the senior officer, exhibiting conduct that violates all known norms of the force.

“Accordingly, the CSO was officially queried for discreditable conduct, insubordination, engaging in partisan political activities, illegal duty and act unbecoming of a public officer,” the statement said.
