2020/2021 NPFL season was best in history, LMC says

The 2020/2021 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) season which ended on Aug. 5 was the best in the history of domestic football in Nigeria, the competition’s organisers said on Friday.

Shehu Dikko, Chairman of NPFL’s organising body League Management Company (LMC), said while the 2020/2021 was challenging it still brought out the best in everybody involved.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Dikko spoke in Abuja during a “Guest Forum” organised by the FCT Chapter of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN).

“The season was innovatively challenging, in spite of the history-breaking feats achieved by the participating clubs. But then, we all know it as a fact that Nigerians always come out top when their backs are against the wall.

“When our backs are against the wall, Nigerians will come out with something spectacular and fantastic,” Dikko said during the session used to review the season with members of the media.

He went on to praise the 20 clubs which participated in the competition, saying it was necessary to do so as they were fundamental to the event.

“They gave everything they could to make sure the season was concluded the way we envisaged it, in spite of the challenges, financial stress and logistic challenges, and all others.

“There were instances when we played three or four games within eight days and the clubs were able to meet up.”

Dikko also had words of praise for the clubs’ players. “They really worked very hard, very well and cooperated with the club officials and management.

“In doing this, we must not forget the referees, other match officials, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the media as well.

“Everybody was absolutely exemplary. They all did quite well as they cooperated with the league body and NFF to make sure the league was run very well.

“The media kept working very hard to bring out the positives, doing what they have to do to make sure the season was a success.”

While giving a breakdown of how the 2020/2021 season which started off on Dec. 27 went, Dikko stated that it was the best in the history of Nigerian football league in terms of statistics.

“Technically, I can say it is the best league that has been played, not just in the NPFL but since we started playing professional football in Nigeria.

“Commercially also, it was the most challenging, even as it was also the most innovative. Because we came with some innovations that people never thought was possible.

“But they were very challenging, because the finances did not come the way we expected them to come.”

”In terms of organisation also, it was really challenging, because of COVID-19 and the financial stress but everyone came together and we delivered,” he said.

NAN reports that the 2020/2021 NPFL was won by Akwa United Football Club of Uyo, with Rivers United of Port Harcourt finishing in second place.

2020/2021 NPFL ends with 5 clubs seeking 2 tickets, 4 others fighting relegation

The 2020/2021 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) season ends on Thursday with many high points to look forward to, even without the competition’s title at stake.

The season began on Dec. 27, and it has trudged on since in spite of issues of the absence of title sponsors as well as the accumulation of match indemnities and other entitlements to match officials.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that all these will now come to an end (at least for this season) with Match Day 38 fixtures at 10 venues on Thursday.

Akwa United Football Club of Uyo have won the title since Match Day 37 on Sunday, after whipping MFM FC of Lagos 5-2 to move to 71 points for an unassailable nine-point lead.

But much is still at stake, with qualification tickets for the 2021/2022 CAF Champions League and 2021/2022 CAF Confederation Cup on the line, as well as relegation to the lower league.

The position of second-placed Nasarawa United of Lafia is under threat and they may miss the chance to join Akwa United in qualifying for the 2021/2022 CAF Champions League.

A win will however take them far away from the chasing pack of third-placed Kano Pillars, fourth-placed Rivers United, fifth-placed Enyimba International and sixth-placed Kwara United.

But each of all the five clubs have a chance, provided they win and their nearest rivals lose, with one CAF Champions League ticket and one Confederation Cup ticket at stake.

With all five of them playing away, the situation is unpredictable and only those who can grab away wins will pick the tickets to play on the continent.

FC IfeanyiUbah and Adamawa United are already relegated, but the other two to join them can be any two of Warri Wolves, Sunshine Stars, Wikki Tourists and Jigawa Golden Stars.

Warri Wolves need more than a win to escape the drop, while Sunshine Stars and Wikki Tourists need to just win to scale through.

But that will be if Jigawa Golden Stars do not draw or win at MFM FC.

NAN reports that two clubs are to join the duo of Adamawa United and FC IfeanyiUbah in dropping to the Nigeria National League (NNL) for the 2021/2022 season.

On the other hand, the second-placed team will join winners Akwa United in playing in the 2021/2022 CAF Champions League, while the third-placed team will play in the 2021/2022 CAF Confederation Cup.

‘Don’t join mushroom clubs in Europe’- Pinnick warns NPFL players

NFF president Amaju Pinnick has appealed to players in the Nigeria Professional Football League to stop moving to obscure leagues in Europe.

In a bid to better their lives, players in the Nigerian top-flight have moved to countries like Vietnam, India, Uzbeskistan and other lesser known European countries.

The careers of some of them have been truncated by these wrong choices.

Pinnick has however promised to help the players join top clubs in Europe.

“If you’re living in Nigeria, you’re going to a top club. Villarreal, Valencia, Lille, and all those proud footballing clubs and not to one mushroom club that you’re better off,” he said as quoted by Brila.net.
“I want to expose you, people, to the highest levels so when you’re going to a foreign club, and we won’t allow any agent take you to countries like Cyprus, Belarus, etc., no, never we won’t allow it and I will make sure no transfer is issued on situations like that.”

Mikel Obi should consider NPFL move – Makinwa

Veteran Nigerian coach Henry Makinwa has encouraged John Obi Mikel to consider a switch to the Nigeria Professional Football League, saying it would be a “massive win” for the Nigerian top flight.

Mikel joined EFL Championship side Stoke City on a short-term deal after leaving Turkish Super Lig outfit Trabzonspor not long after the coronavirus pandemic first became a global crisis.

However, his contract with the Potters expires at the end of the 2020-21 campaign – prompting speculation in the media about where he would continue his professional career.

“That would be highly welcomed if he can consider that option,” Makinwa told Goal when asked if Mikel should make a return to Nigeria.

“I once wrote about this many years back but that could not stand then. If he does that, we will welcome him back home.

“It would be a massive win for the NPFL and the local fans. I made the same appeal to our qualified Nigerian coaches abroad like Finidi George, Emmanuel Amuneke, Haruna Doda and so on to come home so that we can build the country’s football together.”

Warri Wolves crush Katsina United 4-1 in enthralling football encounter

It was a dominant display in the second quarter-final game of the ongoing 2021 Nigeria Professional Football League, NPFL/La-Liga U-15 Promises Youth League in Enugu, as Warri Wolves beat defending champions, Katsina United, 4 -1.

The Junior Wolves opened scoring in the 22 minutes of the enthralling encounter through Abdul Samuel, after some beautiful team interchange of passes in the build up.

The impressive young Seasiders held the advantage until the 38 minutes, when the young Changi Boys leveled terms with an Umar Abubakar’s effort on goal.

A minute later the defending champions got the perfect response from the Seasiders, as Uwakwe Sampson restored their lead with a well timed strike.

The first half ended with the young Seasiders as the side in the lead.

Ten minutes into the second half, Vwegba Solomon made it 3 – 1 for the rampaging Wolves.
