  • Wikki Tourists FC spends N2.4m on 5 home matches — Spokesman

Wikki Tourists FC of Bauchi says it has spent N2.4 million to execute its five home matches played in Jos, Plateau, since the beginning of the 2017/2018 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).

The club’s Media Officer, Bala Kurba, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Bauchi.

Kurba said the team had to play its home matches in Jos due to the ongoing renovation of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium, Bauchi, its base.

He said the Local Management Committee (LMC) had earlier approved the New Jos Stadium, along Zaria Road for all the team’s home matches.

“Following this development, we have been subjected to spending N480,000 per match to enable the team execute its home matches.

“We spend N120,000 for the pitch, while the remaining N360,000 is for security, match officials and other unforeseen expenditure that were earlier not captured in the club’s budget.

“The team is currently occupying the 13th position on the league table with 13 points, whereas, we could have performed better if the team has been playing its home matches in Bauchi,’’ he said.

The spokesman called on fans and supporters of the club to be patient, while expressing optimism that the team would still do better in their remaining matches of the league.

  • NPFL Match Day 6 Review: Rangers, Go Round FC move up as Kwara United stun Lobi Stars

Kwara United Football Club of Ilorin on Thursday halted Lobi Stars’ unbeaten run in the 2017/2018 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) season after beating the Makurdi-based side 1-0.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Stephen Alfred’s goal at the Kwara State Stadium in Ilorin handed Lobi Stars their first defeat of the league season.

The result meant Lobi Stars dropped two spots down the log to fifth position, while Kwara United moved up to 17th position from the bottom spot.

In arguably the biggest fixture of Match Day 6, Rangers International FC defeated Rivers United 1-0 through a 59th minute goal by Kelvin Itoya at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu.

The result shot Rangers to the eighth position on the log, while Rivers United are now joint 15th with city rivals Go Round FC of Port Harcourt on the log.

In Omoku, near Port Harcourt, NPFL debutants Go Round FC stunned Nasarawa United 2-1 at the Krisdera Hotel Stadium to move out of the relegation zone to the 15th position.

The Lafia-based clubside slipped to a disappointing 18th position on the NPFL 20-club log.

NAN also reports that a total of five goals were scored in the three matches played on Thursday to bring the total of goals scored on Match Day 6 to 15.

The goals came from eight home wins and a draw.

The last Match Day 6 fixture, between Niger Tornadoes FC of Minna and Heartland FC of Owerri, will be played on Wednesday.

  • El-Kanemi Warriors will win 2017/2018 NPFL title, Borno govt official says

Yusuf Mohammed, a Deputy Director in the Borno Sports Council, says El-Kanemi Warriors Football Club of Maiduguri are sure to win the 2017/2018 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) title.

Mohammed told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Tuesday he was comfident the team would finish at the top of the season’s league table in September.

“By the special grace of God, El-Kanemi Warriors will be among the top four clubs in the country’s league.

“In fact, I am confident that we are going to win the Nigeria Professional Football League title,’’he said.

Mohammed assured that the team would soon return to its glory days, following the recent recruitment of coach Imama Amapakabo as the club’s Technical Adviser.

NAN reports that Amapakabo, the former coach of Rangers International FC of Enugu, signed a two-year contract worth N750,000 per month and a sign-on fee of N15 million.

The coach had led Rangers to the NPFL title in 2015/2016 before leaving the Enugu-based club under controversial circumstances last season.

He was signed on by the Maiduguri side after the sacking of Ladan Bosso who led El-Kanemi to a sixth-place finish in the just-concluded NPFL season, and will be hoping to replicate his success with Rangers at his new club.

“I can assure you that we will not only do well in the league, but also go ahead to play in the continent.

“We still recall some of the laurels we won against the likes of Al Ahly of Egypt and also the Challenge Cup we won against Stationery Stores FC of Lagos in Makurdi.

“This was when Retd. Col Abdulmumuni Aminu was the Governor of the state.

“Late Amodu Shuaibu was the Coach of the team then and I am confident that with the coming in of our new coach Imama Amapakabo, those glory days will be back in the shortest possible time.

“The quality of Amapakabo cannot be overemphasised as everyone in the league is aware of his capabilities and with the calibre of the technical crew at his disposal, I believe he will deliver.

“Our governor, Kashim Shettima, has also promised to support the team 100 per cent and I am confident that what happened in Plateau last season will happen in Borno, come the end of the 2017/2018 NPFL season,” he said.

NAN reports that El-Kanemi Warriors of Maiduguri will begin their NPFL 2017/2018 season with a trip to Port Harcourt to tackle Rivers United FC on Jan. 14.

The defending champions, Plateau United, start their title defence away to Nasarawa United.

The 2017/2018 NPFL season has been slated to kick off on Jan. 14 and to end on Sept. 30.
