Umar Abdullahi the Coach of Akwa United, has vowed to avoid losing away matches, in the team’s effort to avert  relegation in the 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).

On match day 26, Akwa United played out a 1-1 draw against Gombe United at the Pantami Township Stadium in Gombe on Sunday.

Gombe United  currently occupy the 20th position on the NPFL log.

In the post-match interview, Abdullahi said that his team’s inability to pick away points had affected his team’s position on the log, placing them in relegation zone.

He said upon realising the danger that losing away matches posed to his team, they worked hard to avoid it.

According to him, the draw against Gombe United is a stepping stone that his team will build on to strengthen their effort at finishing in good position.

“I told media that losing from home has stopped.

“We don’t have to continue losing points from home but what we need to do is keep picking points from the road and it has started from this match.

“I say congratulations to us because ever since we started, we have been struggling on the road, we hardly pick a point.

“This is one of the stepping stones, by not losing away from home again.

“We know that the team is in danger and the only way we can avert the danger is by earning points.

“We came for the maximum three points but we got a point and we thank God,” he said.

On how his team beat Gombe United at home, Abdullahi said though both teams were in need of the three points to avoid relegation, his team won because they were more determined.

On their next match, Abdullahi said the management and coaching crew of Plateau United should expect a shock, as his team was now motivated to pick points away.

On the other hand, Chief Coach of Gombe United, Alhaji Kwairanga was absent from the match, while Coach Adewale Moses who took charge of the match rushed out of the pitch to escape the hostility of the home fans.

David Nnaji of Gombe United scored for the home side in the 52nd minute while Suleiman Sani equalised for Akwa United in the 61st minute of the game

3SC on course to earn continental slot – Gbenga Ogunbote,

Gbenga Ogunbote, the Head Coach of Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC), on Sunday in Ibadan said the team is on course to earn a continental slot for next season.

Ogunbote made this known during the post-match news conference after the team’s 2-0 defeat of Remo Stars FC in a 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Match Day 26 fixture at Lekan Salami Sport Complex, Ibadan.

He said that the determination exhibited by 3SC in the game was because players, management and fans knew that loosing to Remo Stars at the South-west derby would be a big setback in achieving their dreams.

“We are catching up gradually, we need to win our home games and try as much as we can to get points on the road. That is what can push us up the ladder.

“When we are down on the league table to 13th, 14th position, we always say that we are still on course.

”Then we have about 19 games and now we are talking about 12 games so I believe that anything can happen because our target still achievable,” he said.

Speaking on the first win of the 3SC over Remo Stars in eight matches, Ogunbote described the game against Remo  Stars as game of minds.

“The game is worth its name, derby, that is what we should expect from a derby,” Ogunbote said.

He described the support as a great motivation for the team to win the game.

The Benin side came into the game hungry for maximum points following a disappointing 3-1 loss at Akwa United in their midweek match.

The visitors stepped up their game in the second half, but the hosts’ defence rebuffed them.

Osaghae Junior, who was introduced in the 80th minute took the game far beyond the visitors as the substitute bagged a brace to end the match 4-0.

Oluyole Warriors currently occupy the ninth position, with 34 points, after securing maximum three points against Akwa United.

Ogunbote said that his team had been getting it right gradually since the beginning of second half of the season, but securing good points in both home and away games would make the team look more comfortable on the league table.

“There can not be third round, we are not comfortable on the league table right now. The league is still wide open both on the top and at the bottom, and a team must get it right now to be up there on the league table.

“The only fear we are having now is fatigue, because we have to be on the road to Gombe for next game against Doma United on Wednesday, then rush down for another home game on Sunday.

“This is taking a great toll on the team, “he said.

Ogunbote said that new players signed by the 3SC at the end of first half of the season were gradually fusing into the team.

He appreciated the fans for standing by the team through thick and thin.

Also, Coach Umar Abdullahi of Akwa United, while commenting on the game, said that his team planned and prepared to claim all three points of the game but football could not be predicted.

He said that the last home victory of Akwa United against Enyimba FC gave strong signal to 3SC and other teams to redouble their preparation while playing against the team.

  • Why we introduced U-17 youth league – NPFL

Why we introduced U-17 youth league – NPFL

Gbenga Elegbeleye, Chairman of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), has said that the newly introduced Under 17 Youth League would help the country select and prepare players for international tournaments.

Elegbeleye said this on Saturday while speaking to newsmen in Benin City, the Edo State capital, during the final of the maiden edition of the youth league.

“The league will serve as a reservoir for the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to select a squad for international competitions,” he said.

According to Elegbeleye, who is the 2nd Vice-Chairman of the NFF, the league will only focus on young players.

“Where we have an NPFL club, the youth team (U-17) will be like a feeder team to the various clubs.

“When you have the U-15 players, they cannot graduate immediately and be playing for the premier league, so we need them to go through the U-17.

“Plateau United FC is already benefiting. I can spot three of the boys coming into the senior team from the U-17 team; that is the spirit.

“When we play Under 15 and Under 17 league every season, it will enable us to have a pool of footballers that NFF can select from.”

Elegbeleye regretted the failure of the country to qualify for the last U-17 World Cup, saying that it was due to poor planning.

He expressed the hope that the introduction of the youth league would take care of the lapses that hindered the country from picking the ticket for the last cadet World Cup.

“For instance, we used to be world champions in U-17 football; we have won it four to five times, but unfortunately, we did not qualify for the last event.

“We cannot ask why it was so because we are not planning. We are no longer planning, and when we are not planning, we cannot get good results.

“Now, with the introduction of the youth league, we will have players that will be focused,” he said.

Three ex-internationals, Patrick Pascal, Yakubu Aiyegbeni and Seyi Olofinjana were showcased as ambassadors and role models for the youths in the  league.

Elegbeleye added that the ex-internationals would motivate the young players.

“By God’s grace, this tournament has come to stay. This is what we call, ‘Premier League U-17 season one; next one will be season two’,” Elegbeleye said.

  • Kano Pillars coach proffers solution to Super Eagles goalkeeping crisis

Kano Pillars coach proffers solution to Super Eagles goalkeeping crisis

Abdullahi Maikaba, Technical Adviser of Kano Pillars Football Club, has recommended Kingdom Osayi and Amas Obasogie of Doma United and Bendel Insurance, respectively, as good alternatives to resolve the Super Eagles goalkeeping crisis.

Maikaba said this in an interview with journalists shortly after the Match Day 13 fixture of the NPFL 2023/2024 season, which was played at Pantami Township Stadium, Gombe, on Saturday, with Kano Pillars losing 0-1 to Doma United.

He said with the form of both players, they deserved to be called up for the national team to help address the goalkeeping challenges being experienced by the team.

“Football is improving in Nigeria, especially at the league level. We hope the national team selectors will look inwards to our league.

“I recommend Doma United’s Kingdom and Bendel Insurance’s Amas to be of help to our national team. I believe these two goalkeepers can be safe hands for the Super Eagles,” he said.

On the outcome of the game, Maikaba said the fact that Doma United defeated his team by a lone goal didn’t mean the hosts were better than his team.

He said his players were unlucky not to have grabbed the equalising goal, and he expressed optimism that his team had enough opportunity to recover and get to the top.

Asked why the 18-year-old Yusuf Abdullahi could not score a goal in spite scoring five at the same stadium on Sunday, Maikaba said it was due to pressure.

He stated that the player was under pressure from those who wanted to sell him to clubs outside the country.

“After scoring five goals, there must have been a lot of pressure on him, especially those that want to sell him out.

“We had to collect his phone for him to concentrate. I think that was part of his problem today,” he said.

Maikaba commended the turn out of supporters to watch their NPFL team play, adding that such attendance was good for the development of football in the country.

“I like the atmosphere, the supporters are out for them and it is good for Nigerian football,” he said.

On his part, Doma United’s Head Coach, Akinade Onigbinde, said Osayi had proven himself as a good goalkeeper that deserved a call-up to the national team.

Onigbinde said Osayi could challenge any goalkeeper in the national team in view of his impressive saves that had helped his team secure top spot in the NPFL.

He said he could give assurance to the coach of the Super Eagles, Jose Peseiro, that Osayi would not disappoint if called up for national assignment.

“I brought Osayi to this team. I saw him when we played against Niger tornadoes in Kano last season. I saw the quality in him and since we had goalkeeping problems, I called him over, so I know he can do it.

“He has the qualities to go to a national team. He is a fantastic goalkeeper and he has saved a lot of goals,” he said.

On the outcome of the game, he said they planned well for Kano Pillars knowing how good they were.

According to him, his defenders were tactically disciplined and that explained why Kano Pillars players found it difficult to score in the game.

Osayi attributed his success so far to God and fans of Doma United for their constant prayers and support.

He said he was not under any pressure to join the national team: “If I am given the opportunity to man the goal post (for the national team), I will be so excited, and I will definitely do my best.”

Osayi was named the NPFL player of the month for November, while Doma United coach was named coach of the month.

Emmanuel Ekpenyong scored for Doma United in the 14th minute of the game to send his team to the top of the NPFL log with 25 points.

Doma now has two points ahead of Remo Stars and Lobi Stars who both have a game in hand.

Also, the 12, 000-capacity Pantami Township stadium was filled to capacity as fans crowded the facility to watch their teams play.
