NRC reacts over Abuja-Kaduna train derailment

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has confirmed that one of its Kaduna-bound trains on the Abuja-Kaduna Train Service (AKTS) derailed at about 11:09 am on Tuesday.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the incident occurred at kilometre 49, between Kubwa Station and Asham Station.

In a statement issued by the NRC Managing Director, Kayode Opeifa, the corporation disclosed that emergency rescue teams, medical personnel, and nearby hospitals had been mobilised to provide urgent assistance to passengers.

He added that a full complement of security operatives had also been deployed to the scene to ensure the safety of commuters and facilitate ongoing evacuation efforts.

“Our priority at the moment is the safe movement of all passengers back to Abuja,” Opeifa stated, while appealing for calm and understanding from the public.

As of press time, there were no immediate reports of casualties, while rescue operations were still underway.

NRC finally breaks silence on suspended Warri–Itakpe train service

Management of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has disclosed that regular train operations will soon resume on the Warri–Itakpe corridor.

Chief Public Relations Officer of NRC, Mr Callistus Unyimadu, made this known in a statement on Friday in Lagos State.

Mr Unyimadu, in the statement, said train service was suspended on the route to enable NRC to carry out urgent and critical track repairs aimed at guaranteeing the safety, reliability, and comfort of passengers.

“The corporation is pleased to announce that work on the affected sections has reached an advanced stage, and normal train movement will recommence in the shortest possible time.

“The NRC deeply appreciates the patience, understanding, and cooperation of passengers during this period of service interruption,” he said.

Unyimadu noted that the NRC remained committed to providing safe, efficient, and reliable rail transport services across the country.

He said that subsequent announcements would be communicated on the official date for the resumption of full operations.

NRC confirms incident on Abuja-Kaduna route, assures of normalcy

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has confirmed that one of the coaches’ wheel on the Abuja-Kaduna Train Service (AKTS) experienced hot axle some kilometres to Rigasa Station in Kaduna.

The incident, which happened on Wednesday evening is due to hot wheels friction as a result of abnormal temperature due to excessive heat on the journal housing.

However, the situation was immediately brought under control and the train marshalled to Kaduna and to safety.

Consequent upon this incident, the train service will experience some capacity issues, which may affect some customers booked on the business class.

Passengers who were booked on the affected coach for Thursday, have all been contacted through the details they provided online.

The Management is working to ensure the disruption is minimal and that normal service would resume before the afternoon services.

“We assure all our customers and passengers of their safety on our train services as we are determined to continue to provide the best travel experience on all our train networks.

We apologize and regret all the inconvenience.”

NRC mum as Warri-Itakpe train service remains grounded

Passengers were left stranded over the weekend as the Warri-Itakpe Train Service (WITS) came to an unexpected halt, sparking concerns over the state of the critical rail infrastructure and the silence from the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC).

Sources familiar with the development confirmed that train operations have been suspended since Saturday, August 2, without prior notice or official communication from the NRC.

The reasons for the suspension remain unclear, but railway staff at various stations along the corridor hinted at possible technical faults and track integrity concerns, particularly in hilly sections of the route.

Commuters and stakeholders expressed frustration over the abrupt disruption, which affected hundreds of passengers who rely on the route for daily travel between Delta, Edo, and Kogi States.

“We booked for Sunday, but unfortunately, the train did not work. No one told us anything; we got to know on the road. We had to return to Abuja,” said Okonkwo Otuya Rita, a regular passenger on the route.

“To add to it, the portal to book for tickets is currently not displaying coach options anymore. No refunds yet, no updates. Nothing”.

Observers have pointed to longstanding concerns about routine maintenance on the rail line, which passes through a terrain that experts say requires frequent inspection and upkeep.

“The terrain of the Warri-Itakpe corridor, especially the hilly areas, does not support neglect,” said a railway safety analyst who requested anonymity. “It is critical that the tracks are monitored continuously. A lapse in maintenance could lead to serious accidents”.

Adding to passenger concerns is the recurring issue of trains arriving at their final destinations late at night, raising security fears for those alighting in remote locations. Passengers have long appealed for rescheduling or morning train service from Itakpe station and additional security measures to be put in place, but the NRC has yet to implement lasting solutions.

As of press time, the NRC has not issued a formal statement regarding the cause of the suspension or a timeline for resumption. Repeated calls and emails to the corporation’s spokesperson went unanswered.

The Warri-Itakpe rail line, a flagship standard gauge route inaugurated in 2020, has become an essential part of Nigeria’s growing rail network. The current disruption raises serious questions about infrastructure sustainability and the responsiveness of transport authorities.

Analysts are calling for urgent intervention by the Federal Ministry of Transportation and a transparent update from the NRC to avoid further erosion of public trust.

“This isn’t just about one route,” said a civil society advocate. “It’s about confidence in the entire rail system”.

Warri-Itakpe train service: FG toying with lives of citizens

What began as a celebrated step toward modern rail connectivity between the oil-rich South-South and mineral-laden North-Central regions of Nigeria is now rapidly turning into a source of fear, frustration, and a glaring example of infrastructural neglect.

The Warri-Itakpe standard gauge rail service, launched in 2020 with fanfare, was hailed as a major win for national integration and ease of transportation across Delta, Edo, and Kogi States.

But recent incidents and daily passenger experiences have painted a different picture – one of declining safety standards, poor maintenance, and a seeming disregard for the lives of Nigerian commuters.

“I feared for my life,” said Rhoda Ugboma, a regular commuter who recently took the train from Itakpe to Ujevwu. “The train stalled in the middle of nowhere for over three hours without explanation from any official of the Nigerian Railway Corporation”.

Her experience is hardly unique. In recent months, there have been multiple reports of stalled journeys, malfunctioning brakes, and a growing threat of banditry along some parts of the rail corridor.

Recall that the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) had on April 10 suspended operations on the WITS route due to multiple engine failures and other technical challenges. The suspension, NRC said, was to allow for improved operational capacity and service delivery.

The Warri-Itakpe train service eventually resumed operations on April 30, and upon resumption, Thursdays were dedicated to maintenance of the tracks and rolling stock, starting May 1, 2025. Despite this, passengers continue to suffer on the train route.

Perhaps the most alarming experience yet was the January 2023 incident, where more than 140 passengers were stranded deep in a forested area between Agenebode and Itakpe after the train derailed – a chilling reminder of the 2022 Kaduna-Abuja train attack.

Over the weekend, the train returned to service with only two operational coaches after leaving passengers grounded earlier in the week. Two other coaches reportedly broke down mid-journey, compounding the hardship for commuters. “The kind of suffering people went through on Saturday is enough to shut down that train route entirely,” lamented a commuter who was aboard during the chaotic trip.

This recent development has once again forced NRC to cancel operations for Sunday, 3rd August 2025 and Monday, 4th August 2025. At the time of this report, the feature to select coaches on the WITS portal remained disabled to stop travellers from booking tickets, leaving uncertainty as to when operations will resume. No words from NRC

Another commuter added that passengers who had booked tickets online during the earlier service disruption have still not been refunded. “It’s clear that the NRC has become nonchalant, and this recurring breakdown signals deep-rooted inefficiency,” he said.

Moreover, the terrain along the rail line requires consistent and deliberate maintenance to ensure the integrity of the tracks. It would be catastrophic for a train to experience mechanical failure or derailment while navigating hilly sections. In addition, the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) must take proactive steps to prevent trains from arriving at passengers’ destinations in the dead of night, which raises safety and logistical concerns.

“How can only one train be running from Itakpe to Warri back to back, and you expect efficiency? The government is quick to award contracts for runways for Airports for the rich, while poor Nigerians risk their lives, suffer from technical difficulties, hitches and train delays. Shame to those managing the system,” one frustrated traveller quipped.

Beyond maintenance and mismanagement, there are growing concerns of internal sabotage within the NRC. According to a reliable source, management at the NRC may have compromised the integrity of the corporation by enabling private transporters to poach railway passengers, thereby ensuring their business survival at the expense of public service.

“This is no longer just incompetence; it looks deliberate,” said a whistleblower familiar with internal NRC operations. “If this trend continues, passengers will be pushed back to unsafe roads, and the whole point of the Warri-Itakpe railway will be defeated”.

Meanwhile, some insiders in the NRC, who spoke anonymously, blame the situation on budgetary constraints, poor staffing, and a lack of political will to ensure consistent safety checks.

Critics say the Federal Government has been disturbingly silent on the matter, especially given the importance of this corridor that connects Warri through Abraka, Agbor, Uromi, Ajaokuta, and Itakpe, all key economic hubs.

“The government’s lack of response is disappointing. We are at the point where this can become uncontrollable,” one civic leader warned.

The Warri-Itakpe rail service once held the promise of safe, fast, and modern transport across critical Nigerian states. Today, it stands as a metaphor for national dysfunction, where lives hang in the balance of bureaucracy, sabotage, and political inaction.

Until meaningful steps are taken to overhaul its operations, provide adequate security, and ensure regular maintenance, critics argue the Federal Government is not just failing in its duty, it is, quite literally, toying with the lives of its citizens.

NRC alerts passengers on fraudulent booking platforms

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has informed passengers to desist from patronising fraudulent booking platforms.

Mr Callistus Unyimadu, Chief Public Relations Officer of NRC, said this in a statement on Tuesday in Lagos.

“The attention of the management of NRC has been drawn to the activities of fraudulent and unauthorised platforms soliciting train ticket payments from unsuspecting members of the public via individual bank accounts.

“The NRC wishes to categorically state that these platforms are not affiliated to the corporation and any payment made through such channels is done at the victim’s risk.

“Passengers are strongly advised to desist from engaging with these fraudulent sites and must not, under any circumstances, pay into personal or unverified accounts for train bookings,” he said.

He, for the avoidance of doubt, listed the only authorised online booking platforms for NRC train services to include: Warri-Itakpe Train Service (WITS): https://nrc-fane.ng

“Abuja-Kaduna Train Service (AKTS): https://nrc.tps.ng, Lagos-Ibadan Train Service (LITS): https://nrc.gsds.ng,” he said.

He encouraged passengers to verify all booking platforms through the NRC official website: www.nrc.gov.ng or by contacting NRC customer service centers.

“The management is working closely with relevant security agencies to investigate and bring those behind these scams to justice.

“We remain committed to ensuring the safety and satisfaction of all our esteemed passengers,” he said.

BREAKING: Passengers stranded as technical glitch again grounds Warri-Itakpe train

Hundreds of passengers were left stranded on Sunday after the locomotive operating the Warri-Itakpe Train Service (WITS) suffered a major technical malfunction en route from Ujevwu in Delta State to Itakpe in Kogi State.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the disruption caused significant delays and confusion, particularly at the Itakpe train station where passengers who had booked tickets for the return trip to Delta and other destinations arrived, only to be informed of the breakdown.

The station manager at Itakpe, Mr. Paul Ikeozala, confirmed the incident but downplayed its severity, insisting it was “just a delay.” When pressed for further details, Ikeozala declined to provide additional information.

However, sources within the Itakpe train station told TNG that the incident was indeed a major technical glitch. While they declined to disclose the specific nature of the malfunction, the impact was clearly visible as affected passengers scrambled to find alternative travel arrangements.

“I have to be in Asaba first thing tomorrow morning because I have an important scheduled meeting I must not miss. I am going to Auchi, from there I will find my way,” said one visibly frustrated passenger, a contractor who refused to be named, speaking around 4:30 pm.

Some passengers opted to seek accommodation at nearby motels in hopes of catching the Monday train, while others explored more immediate but uncertain road transport options.

There has been no official statement yet from the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) regarding the incident. However, Mr. Ikeozala assured that the train would be available for operations on Monday.

Despite this assurance, a reliable source at the station revealed that Sunday ticket holders may not be guaranteed seats on Monday’s train.

“They should request for refund and book new tickets for Monday to be guaranteed sitting or they should be willing to stand through the journey,” the source said, adding that a similar arrangement had been adopted in previous cases.

TNG reports the Warri-Itakpe rail corridor has been a critical artery for travellers shuttling between the Southern part of Nigeria and the Northern regions.

Sunday’s disruption has once again raised concerns about the reliability of Nigeria’s rail infrastructure and the effectiveness of response mechanisms during emergencies.

As of the time of filing this report, there is still no word from the NRC on measures to compensate affected passengers or prevent future occurrences.

The incident occurred along the Warri–Itakpe rail – NRC reacts to viral train fire video

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has clarified the viral video claiming one of its coaches caught fire.

According to the Chief Public Relations Officer of the NRC, Callistus Unyimadu in a statement on Sunday, the incident happened three years ago and not recently.

“We wish to clarify that the incident occurred over three years ago along the Warri–Itakpe rail corridor.

“The video is outdated and does not represent the present condition of our operations or the safety of any of our train services,” Unyimadu said.

He urged the public to stop sharing misleading or outdated videos, which only create unnecessary panic, fear, and spread false information.

“The spread of outdated or false content erodes public trust and hampers national development. Such actions should be firmly discouraged,” Unyimadu stated.

He affirmed that the NRC remains committed to passenger safety, comfort, and consistent improvements in its service delivery to Nigerians.

Unyimadu also noted that the NRC continually works to upgrade its operations to meet global safety standards and align with international best practices.

“We thank the public for their support and encourage everyone to confirm information from official NRC channels before sharing,” he said.

JUST IN: Warri-Itakpe train service grounded

Warri-Itakpe Train Service (WITS) has suffered a major technical glitch and has been grounded. As a result, train services scheduled for July 15, 2025 (today) have been cancelled due to the unexpected technical issues.

“Our team of engineers is currently working diligently to resolve the problem,” management of the train service disclosed in a notice to passengers.

The notice added: “Passengers who wish to reschedule their journey will be provided with a platform to do so. Those who prefer a refund will be attended to immediately”.

Earlier, the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) had disclosed that regular train operations would not be disrupted today despite the public holiday declared by the federal government.

Recall that the federal government had declared today a public holiday to honour former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The former President died on Sunday in a London hospital after a prolonged illness.‎ Buhari’s remains will arrive from London at noon today for burial in his hometown of Daura in Katsina State, following Islamic rites.

  • FG begins reconstruction of Eastern rail line corridor – NRC

FG begins reconstruction of Eastern rail line corridor – NRC

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) says the Federal Government has begun reconstruction and rehabilitation of Eastern railway Corridor.

Mr Victor Adamu, the Railway District Manager, Eastern District, Enugu stated this while responding to national survey conducted by NAN on abandonment of railway lines in the country, in Enugu on Wednesday.

Adamu said that the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the narrow gauge tracks had commenced from Port Harcourt to Aba, in Abia State.

According to him, the narrow gauge traversed the eastern district, from Port Harcourt to Maiduguri and other parts of Nigeria.

“This district covers Enugu, Abia, Ebonyi, Rivers and part of Egbede in Benue State, which is our boundary with the north central district of about 110 kilometers.

“I am very happy to state that the segment of the contract was handed over to NRC on Nov. 28, 2024.

“We have our coaches that are running from Port Harcourt to Aba and back to Port Harcourt, five days in a week,” he explained.

He acknowledged that there was suspension of work from Aba in Umuahia down to Enugu.

Adamu, however, said that the Federal Government is doing everything possible to ensure that the construction and rehabilitation on the remaining part of the contract commenced soonest.

The district manager explained that, through the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, work on the narrow gauge had resumed.

“This is a project which the Southeast and other parts of the country will benefit from. The Federal Government is doing a lot to see that the rail lines are working again.

“Sometime in April, the Managing Director of NRC, Mr Kayode Opeifa, visited Enugu and we had some meaningful discussions with the governors of Abia and Enugu States.

“I believe that the visit will really bring out a lot of things that are going to happen on this corridor,’’ he said.

According toAdamu, there is a policy introduced by the Tinubu’s administration that allows state governments to invest in railway.

He disclosed that the Anambra, Abia and Enugu states government were ready to key into the policy.

“With this, I believe that very soon, we will start seeing the dividends from these policies,” Adamu said.

He, however, described the activities of vandals as the biggest challenge to NRC, especially as it concerned their track materials and other facilities.

According to him, in securing the railway infrastructure, NRC is working with the Nigeria Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), military and vigilant groups.

Adamu said that through the collaboration of the NRC, police, military and NSCDC, it made arrests of suspected vandals and some of them were already facing trials.

“There are some suspected vandals that were arrested in Imo, Rivers and Enugu states.

“We are doing these because these facilities are meant for Nigerians and we are expected to own them as Nigerians. This will go a long way in keeping them intact.

“Our officials are still going around to see that these facilities are protected,’’ the district manager said.

Railway operations stopped in Enugu for over two decades.
