VIDEO: Popular media personality narrates terrifying experience as Warri-Itakpe train derails

Popular media personality, Taribio Walson Oweifawari, who was on the Warri-Itakpe train when it derailed on Thursday has recounted the terrifying experience.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the Warri-Itakpe train derailed in a frightening incident that caused panic among passengers.

The train was travelling from Itakpe in Kogi State to Ujevwu in Delta State when the bizarre incident happened.

Narrating the terrifying experience, Oweifawari wrote on Facebook: “My flight to Yenagoa from Abuja on United Nigeria was cancelled, even before I left Yenagoa.

“So, after the Port Harcourt own to Abuja was also cancelled at short notice, I decided to do return trip with the train.

“On our way back today [Thursday] this is what happened. My coach is VIP and it is Coach 1. The coach immediately after ours is Coach 2 and it derailed.

“Hai!!! I just kept shouting Jesus when it looked like ours was going to tumble. Just a little bit more, that coach would have fallen off the high point, and taking our coach with it”.

While details of the incident are still sketchy at the time of filing this report, it was gathered that all passengers and crew members notwithstanding arrived at their various destinations safely.

According to Oweifawari, a broadcaster with Radio Bayelsa, she reached home at 12 midnight.

TNG had gathered that the train on one trip had earlier overshot a station it was supposed to stop due to brake failure.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has confirmed the development and announced the suspension of normal commercial operations on the Warri-Itakpe Train Service (WITS) route.

BREAKING: Warri-Itakpe train service suspended – NRC confirms

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has announced the suspension of normal commercial operations on the Warri-Itakpe Train Service (WITS) route.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports this is coming after the train operating the WITS route suffered a “minor derailment” on Thursday.

“Dear esteemed customers, due to an unexpected fault, train operations are suspended for today. We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your understanding. Thank you for your continued patronage,” the terse statement reads.

Meanwhile, it was gathered that the train operating the WITS route derailed on Thursday, 4th of July 2024. All passengers and crew members notwithstanding arrived at their various destinations safely.

A source in NRC, who refused to be named, disclosed efforts were ongoing to restore the affected track to normal traffic.

Recall that the Warri-Itakpe rail line, a 326 kilometres railway facility, was inaugurated by Muhammadu Buhari as Nigeria’s president in September 2020. However, commercial transportation of passengers did not commence until October 2020.

The Warri-Itakpe rail line, which runs from Ujevwu in Delta State, through Edo and Ajaokuta and terminates at Itakpe in Kogi State, was conceived more than 30 years ago. The rail line was conceived to connect Nigeria’s iron ore mining in Itakpe and Ajaokuta, and steel production belt in Aladja, Delta State.

Since the inception of full commercial operations, the rail tracks have suffered from the activities of serial vandals, and the train has derailed on several occasions.

In August 2023, management of NRC announced suspension of the WITS as a result of a derailment at the Ajaokuta station.

Earlier, about 148 passengers and 38 crew members had escaped death as a result of a derailment inside Kogi forest in January 2023. Train operations were suspended for about 3 months until April 2023.

Highway to the grave: Warri-Itakpe Train Service, a disaster waiting to happen

Passengers plying the Warri-Itakpe Train Service (WITS) might be seeing an end to train services on that route soon. Recent events, bothering on safety of passengers, and a lack of maintenance culture, indicate train services on the route could soon come to an end.

There are twelve (12) train stations on the WITS route, located in Ujevwu, Agbarho, Okpara, Abraka, Agbor, Igbanke, Ekehen, Uromi, Agenebode, Itogbo, Ajaokuta and Itakpe. The WITS rail line runs from Itakpe in Okehi local government area of Kogi State to Ujevwu in Udu local government area of Delta State.

Harrowing road journey to WITS train station

To access the Warri-Itakpe Train Service, passengers, who resides in Abuja, Nigeria’s federal capital, have to embark on a 3 hours+ road journey to Itakpe in Kogi State, where the train station is located. Hundreds of passengers, who embark on the harrowing road journey to use the WITS have expressed displeasure in using the train service.

Though passengers have consistently threatened to stop using the service, due to the nature of Nigerian roads, riddled with potholes, and the high cost of travelling by road, there is obviously no viable alternative to the train service.

Meanwhile, since the train service was inaugurated, the federal government has endlessly promised to link the WITS to the federal capital territory (FCT) to remove the inconveniences of having to travel to Itakpe before using the service.

Passengers, from inception, had lodged several complaints of the stress of travelling by road from Abuja to Itakpe to board the train. The complaints have obviously fell on deaf ears. Notwithstanding, it is the expectations of passengers that one day they can travel from Abuja to Warri by rail, without the hazards of going by road.

Activities of vandals and ceaseless derailment

Since the inception of full commercial operations, the rail tracks have suffered from the activities of serial vandals, and the train has derailed on several occasions.

In August 2023, management of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) announced suspension of the WITS as a result of a derailment at the Ajaokuta station. Earlier, about 148 passengers and 38 crew members had escaped death as a result of a derailment inside Kogi forest in January 2023. Train operations were suspended for about 3 months until April 2023.

In a recent development, it was gathered that the train operating the WITS route derailed again on Thursday, 4th of July 2024. All passengers and crew members notwithstanding arrived at their various destinations safely. Despite the derailment being said to be minor, train services along the route have been suspended until further notice.

No official statement has been released by the NRC on the derailment yet. However, a source in the Corporation, who refused to be named, disclosed efforts were ongoing to restore the affected track to normal traffic.

Meanwhile, as a frequent user of the train service, riding on the train from Ujevwu to Itakpe on Wednesday, 3rd of July 2024, I practically had my heart between my teeth when the train wobbled along its track at several locations; one, on top of a valley crossing.

Riding on the train on Wednesday, something told me the Warri-Itakpe Train Service is a disaster waiting to happen. A derailment on top of a valley crossing will spell doom. Passengers on the trip reported how the train had earlier overshot a station it was supposed to stop due to brake failure.

With the harrowing road experience to access the train service coupled with the activities of vandals and safety concerns with using the train service, the plight of the passengers, therefore, could be likened to a case of “between the devil and the deep blue sea”. Sadly, a highway to the grave.

Raking in over N1.4 billion in Q1 2024 alone, the NRC cannot procure spare parts for the turnaround maintenance of the train and coaches. Delays, it was learnt, are usually due to NRC engineers struggling to fix brake pads. On Wednesday, NRC engineers struggled to fix brake pads from about 6:00 am to 10:32 am when the train departed Ujevwu.

“We usually carry out routine checks on the train. We carry out the checks before the train departs Ujevwu every morning. When it gets to Itakpe, we also carry out the checks. Usually, we change brake pads, where they have worn out. But the one of today was just overwhelming,” one of the engineers [names withheld] told me.

Every time the train delays in departing Ujevwu, it means passengers, who left Abuja as early as possible, and patiently waiting at the Itakpe station for the arrival of the train, are doomed to arrive at their destination in Warri late into midnight. This is not to mention how passengers suffer without seats to wait for the arrival of the train at the station.

Needless to say the interiors of the coaches and the seats are now filthy. The curtains to keep off sunlight have worn out. The conveniences on the coaches have all stopped working. The sockets for charging phones have all gone bad. Coaches detached for maintenance are never returned. Coaches are no longer enough and when there is high volume of travellers, a greater number of passengers are made to stand all through the duration of the journey. The 8:00 am train operating from Itakpe to Ujevwu has long stopped operations.

To make matters worse, is the activities of vandals. The spate of rail tracks vandalism along the route and across the country, generally, has reached an alarming rate. It is inconceivable that some unscrupulous persons would use their hands to destroy what they are supposed to protect. It is wicked, evil and an act of murder to remove rail tracks and expose train passengers to danger, which in some instances can be fatal.

Recall that troops of 1 Division, Nigerian Army in Kaduna State recently apprehended 47 suspected rail track vandals while on routine patrol along Kakau Daji-Anguwan Ayaba in Chikun Local Government Area of the State.

The suspects had loaded two trucks with the vandalised rail tracks before their arrest. On a visit to the crime scene, more vandalised rail tracks were found concealed in the nearby bush waiting to be evacuated by the criminal syndicates.

Similarly, operatives of the Nigerian Navy School of Armament Technology in Kachia, Kaduna State, also recently intercepted three trailers loaded with vandalised railway track materials, discreetly concealed in animal feed.

Plying the WITS route, one is quick to observe that some rail tracks have been tampered with. This is readily visible at a section immediately after departing the Itakpe train station, and at several sections along the rail line. The tracks and concrete work visibly litter everywhere along the sections.

Although arrested suspects have confessed to having gang leaders, a reliable source alleged collusion by railway workers. Because, how do you explain vandalised railway properties littering everywhere with no actions taken to retrieve them for safekeeping. They are not reported?

The source also alleged sabotage, stressing that, denied personal gains, railway workers can abandon duties, at the expense and detriment of the travelling public.

It is sad how the NRC puts the lives of people at risk without necessary mechanisms put in place to checkmate the activities of vandals and to check the excesses of railway workers.

One no longer wonders why the Nigerian Senate is pushing for the amendment of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) Act to include insurance fee, thereby providing adequate insurance cover for railway passengers.

At this rate, we might be seeing an end to train services on the Warri-Itakpe Train Service corridor soon. If this lack of maintenance culture persists, normal train operations on the route could be grounded sooner than later.

  • Bill to amend NRC Act passes 2nd reading

Bill to amend NRC Act passes 2nd reading

The Nigerian Senate has passed for second reading, a bill to amend the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) Act.

This followed the presentation of the general principles of the Bill by the sponsor, Sen. Solomon Adeola (APC-Ogun) at plenary, in Abuja on Thursday.

Adeola in his lead debate said the bill was read for the first time on July 20, 2023.

He said the sought amendment NRC bill intended to include in the act insurance fee, thereby providing adequate insurance cover for passengers and goods against any damage that may occur while patronising the railway corporation.

He said in recent time, there has been resurgence in railway transportation in Nigeria due to the modernisation of the rail transport system in the country.

Adeola said from Abuja to Kaduna, Lagos to Ibadan and more recently Port-Harcourt to Aba, passengers board trains as alternative to other modes of transportation.

He said goods are also now being transported in bulk using trains.

The lawmaker, however, said a critical gap existed in the current rail system as a result of comprehensive insurance coverage for passengers and goods using the services of NRC.

“On March 28, 2022, dare devil bandits attack a train from Abuja to Kaduna at Katari in Kaduna State.

“The train derailed and damaged beyond heavily affecting the rail tracks, coaches and some passengers kidnapped exposed to trauma including about eight persons that lost their lives,” he said.

According to him, there was no insurance coverage of any kind for the passengers as the NRC act does not provide for such.

“It is worthy of note that most sectors of the transportation systems offer some form of insurance protection.

“On Nigerian roads, most commercial vehicles, like buses and taxis, are required by law to carry passenger liability insurance.

“This insurance offers financial compensation to passengers in case of accidents, injuries, or even death,” he argued.

Adeola said a glaring gap existed as there was a lack of mandatory insurance for train passengers on the NRC services.

He said a robust insurance scheme would enable the NRC to prioritise safety measures.

“Knowing passengers and cargo are insured could lead to improved service delivery.

“This, in turn, will boost confidence in the railway system, potentially attracting more passengers and cargo volume for the NRC,” Adeola said.

He urged lawmakers to support the second reading of the bill.

Deputy President of Senate, Barau Jibrin (APC-Kano) who presided over the plenary commended the sponsor of the bill.

He expressed hope that the President Bola Tinubu would assent to the bill in line with international best practices on rail transportation when finally passed.

Barau consequently referred the bill to the Committee on Land Transport for further legislative inputs and to report back to plenary in four weeks.

Rail transport: Train engines in Nigeria to start running on LNG

Minister of Transportation, Senator Sa’idu Ahmed Alkali has disclosed that locomotives being used for train services in the country are being retrofitted to operate on both liquified natural gas (LNG) and diesel fuel.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the Minister of Transportation to have made the disclosure when he recently visited the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) workshop at Idu in the Abuja, where the locomotives are being retrofitted.

Senator Alkali said the Monday’s visit was to assess the progress made so far of retrofitting the locomotives to operate on both LNG and diesel fuel.

“During our examination, we engaged with the engineers involved in the project and observed that the process has reached an advanced stage. The engine is set to undergo a test run, marking a significant milestone as the first of its kind on the African Continent,” he said.

TNG gathered that the train engines when completely retrofitted will operate on a combination of 30% diesel and 70% Gas fuel. This means that upon startup, the engine will initially run on diesel before seamlessly transitioning to gas for the duration of the journey.

“The objective is to reduce maintenance costs by approximately 60 to 70 percent and regulate carbon emissions, as this presents one of the most straightforward methods for managing local air pollution.

“Upon completion, the trial will commence on the Abuja-Kaduna rail corridor due to the planned installation of the retrofitting workshop in Abuja, which is intended to facilitate the testing process starting in this June, 2024.

“Subsequently, this process can be replicated on other corridors throughout the nation,” Alkali said.
