    Minister directs new marshals to smoke out illegal miners

    The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr Dele Alake, has directed mining new marshals drawn from the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to smoke out illegal miners and all those who flout the nation’s mining laws.

    Alake gave the directive while inaugurating the first batch of mining marshals drawn from the NSCDC to combat illegal mining.

    He said that 60 marshals have been specially trained and deployed to the 36 states across the federation and the Federal Capital Territory

    The minister  said that the newly activated Mining Marshal Corp, which currently has 2,220 personnel is an inter-agency security outfit established to secure the mining environment.

    He said that plans are underway for other security sister agencies to integrate their officers in to the outfit structure across the country for a robust output.

    According to the minister, the ministry plays a pivotal role in supporting the operations of the mine marshals to ensure their success.

    `Effective intelligence gathering through our state mines inspectorate, harnessing valid data of troubled mining areas and giving the requisite directives for precise operations are necessary factors for coordination of the activities of the marshals.

    The minister earlier held a closed-door meeting with the Minister of Defence, Abubakar Badaru, to discuss securing the mining environment.

    Badaru stated that the federal government was already making a headway in routing illegal miners, as clearance operations have commenced in some troubled spots.

    President Bola Tinubu set up a presidential Inter-ministerial committee on Jan.17 to produce a blue print for securing Nigeria`s natural resources, which comprises of mineral sites, marine economy and the forest.

    Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC officers have made a passionate appeal to the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Bello to quickly wade into the issue of Federal Government package to enable them get at the appropriate time.

    In an appeal trending on social media networks, the officers pleaded with the minister to wade into the matter for NSCDC personnel to get their welfare at appropriate time like other paramilitary agencies under his ministry.

    Hear them: “Sir the wage award approved by federal government to cushion the effect of removal of fuel subsidy ours is not coming at the appropriate time compared to our sister agencies until we put it in prayers.

    “Sir we are facing challenges in time of our financial benefits before it reaches us, like implementation of promotions and payment of arrears which should be a paramount issue that a leader should consider.
    Since inception of payment wage award ours always arrived last.

    “Presently our morale is getting low because all the federal public servants have received their February wage award but ours is not certain when we’ll get our own,financial entitlement aren’t coming as at when due.

    NSCDC arrests 46 suspected criminals in FCT

    Operatives of the FCT Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have arrested 46 suspected criminals in Gwagwalada Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory.

    The FCT Commandant, Olusola Odumosu, said while briefing newsmen on Wednesday in Abuja that 42 male suspects were intercepted while on transit from Zamfara, and four others in possession of stolen armoured cables.

    “Because of their number, my men had to seek the intervention of the Army to aid in the successful arrest of the suspects.

    “We suspect they are fleeing the ongoing onslaught of the military operation in Zamfara as they all claimed to have migrated from the state,” he said.

    According to Odumosu, the suspects have after interrogation, claimed to be on their way to a mining site when they were intercepted.

    “In the course of interrogation, they were unable to disclose the mining site and company name they alleged to be working for.

    “At the time of interception, they had no evidence to show they were going on mining activities which suggested they had a sinister motive.

    “They were in possession of their personal belongings and some other weapon,” he said.

    The commandant, however, said the suspects have been cooperating with the corps in its investigation.

    Odumosu added that the operatives had arrested 27-year-old Bartholomew Anthony, a vigilante group member, in Mabushi area of the FCT in possession of stolen amoured cables, a hacksaw, jack knife, handset and N20,000 cash.

    He said that the suspect gave useful statement that led to the arrest of his three accomplices.

    The commander added that the suspect was allegedly using his membership of a private security outfit to commit heinous acts.

    The commander assured residents that the corps would continue to make the FCT safe from criminal elements.

    He appealed to the public to report all suspicious persons and promised to keep the details of such informants discreet, as security is everyone’s business.

    NSCDC loses Acting DCG Amakiri

    Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), Acting Deputy Commandant General (DCG) in charge of Critical National Asset and Infrastructure (CNAI), Mrs Helen Amakiri, is dead.

    This is contained to a statement signed by NSCDC Public Relations Officer (PRO), Babawale Afolabi, on Tuesday in Abuja.

    According to Afolabi, Amakiri died at the early hours of Tuesday after a brief illness.

    The NSCDC Commandant General (CG), Ahmed Audi, said that the demise of late Amakiri is a monumental loss to the Corps as she would be greatly missed.

    He said the late Amakiri was an exceptionally outstanding officer, a gallant and erudite senior management Staff.

    “Acting DCG Amakiri was in charge of CNAI, a position she held with utmost dedication and effective service delivery before her sudden demise,” he said.

    Audi commiserates with the family and friends of the deceased, praying that the Almighty God would grant the repose of her soul.

    The statement indicated that the late DCG Amakiri, born in 1966, was enlisted into the Corps as a Commissioned Officer in 2004 and rose through the ranks, largely due to her dedication to duty and excellent academic achievements.

    NSCDC FCT Commandant, Olusola Odumosu, in an interview sympathised with the Corps, family and friends of the deceased.

    He said that her impact in ensuring that the mandates of the Corps are achieved would forever remain memorable.

    Odumosu prayed that her soul rests in peace and her family be consoled.

    FG promotes 32,361 personnel in Interior Ministry

    The Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has announced the promotion of 32,361 paramilitary personnel of agencies under the supervision of the ministry.

    Dr Tunji-Ojo, who disclosed details of the promotions through the NSCDC Commandant General, Dr Ahmed Audi, on Friday in Abuja, said 4,498 of those promoted were personnel of the Nigerian Correctional Service out of the 7,000 wardens who sat for the promotion examination.

    Also, 4,598 Immigration officers out of 6,544 were promoted, while 1,680 out of 1,698 fire service personnel who sat for the promotion examinations were elevated.

    Majority of those promoted were, however, from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) which had 21,385 out of its 25,951 that sat for the promotion examinations coming out successful.

    Tunji-Ojo explained that no administration had achieved this feat in recent years, saying it is evidence of an unalloyed commitment to the welfare of the officers.

    While charging the beneficiaries to commit themselves to the service of the nation, the Minister said it was the first time in the history of the board that such huge number of officers were promoted.

    “You should see this promotion as a new frontier in the way and manner you carry out your responsibilities; promotions comes with enormous responsibilities and to who much is given, much is expected.

    “This feat, which remains unprecedented in the history of paramilitary service in Nigeria, is evidence of the commitment of the RenewedHope government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR) in prioritising the welfare of our officers,” he added.

    NSCDC denies killing FCT students

    The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) on Thursday denied its operatives killed two students at a secondary school in Gwarinpa, Abuja.

    Spokesperson of the FCT command of the NSCDC, Ms Comfort Okomanyi, stated that the students in question were alive and recuperating at a medical facility within the FCT.

    Okomanyi added that the FCT Commandant of the NSCDC, Mr Olusola Odumosu, visited the wounded students on Thursday after a routine inspection of their school’s premises.

    Two students of Junior Secondary School, Gwarinpa, were reported to have been hit by gunshots of personnel of the NSCDC during a scuffle between suspected cult groups.

    Okomanyi stated that the Commandant-General of the NSCDC, Mr Ahmed Audi, had set up a panel of inquiry to investigate the matter.

    She added that Audi assured that the NSCDC was determined to enforce internal disciplinary mechanism to punish any personnel found guilty in the unfortunate incident.

    Okomanyi quoted Odumosu as saying that in the fracas, NSCDC personnel fired warning shots into the air to prevent carnage by notorious ex-students who were suspected cult members, but had been expelled from the school.

    “The corps apologise to parents and guardians of the two students who were injured unintentionally during the intervention and promise to pick bills incurred in the course of their treatment,’’ he said.

    Odumosu explained in the statement that the NSCDC was invited by the school’s management for security coverage through a letter dated Nov. 21 and signed by the principal, Mr Akinfolajimi Olayinka.

    “On Wednesday, the school was invaded by some notorious elements, some of whom were expelled students and their student collaborators to disturb the peace of the school.

    “They caused mayhem and destroyed cars belonging to teachers at the school’s parking lot.

    “Armed with cudgels and other dangerous weapons, some of the hoodlums launched attack on the deployed unarmed NSCDC personnel, staff and students of the school which necessitated the call for reinforcement.

    “On account of this development and to prevent the situation from getting out of hands, the police were intimated which resulted to the deployment of policemen to the school,’’ Odumosu explained in the statement.

    Odumosu said reinforcement by NSCDC operatives and the police already restored normalcy, peace and order within and outside the school premises.

    Just in: Abuja boils as NSCDC Officers shoot secondary school students

    The Nigeria Police arrested and detained three Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps officers for shooting two students from Senior Secondary School, Life Camp, in the Federal Capital Territory’s Jabi and Gwarinpa neighborhoods.

    The two students who were shot by NSCDC operatives are being treated at Gwarinpa Hospital.

    Following the shooting, a group of enraged high school students vandalized three NSCDC police vehicles in protest of the attack on their injured colleagues.

    It was gathered that the incident occurred around 11.20am on Wednesday.

    The NSCDC personnel attached to the FCT Command of the NSCDC were at the school to provide security during an ongoing examination on the premises.

    When contacted, the FCT Police spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, confirmed the incident, while noting that the police had restored peace in the affected area.

    Adeh said, “The incident happened, but our operatives intervened in time to restore law and order, and the environment is now peaceful. Two injured students are currently receiving treatment, and the CP, Haruna Garba has ordered the commencement of an investigation into the incident.”

    Meanwhile, the FCT Command of the NSCDC is yet to comment on the development.

    When contacted for comments, the spokesperson for the FCT NSCDC, Comfort Okomanyi, said she was indisposed, while noting that she would make inquiries from the command and revert.

    “I’m sorry, I’m currently indisposed. However, I’ll reach out to the command for an update on the matter, and I’ll get back to you,” Okomanyi noted.

    Pipeline explosion averted in Lagos community

    The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Lagos State Command, has averted an oil pipeline explosion that would have led to the destruction of lives and properties in Alimosho, Lagos State.

    This is contained in a statement signed by the state command’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), DSC Oluwaseun Abolurin, on Friday.

    Abolurin said that the incident also meant to vandalize the oil pipelines of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) in Liberty Estate and its environs, Alimosho Local Government Area (LGA), was averted on Thursday.

    He said that this was in line with the zero tolerance of the Commandant General (CG) NSCDC, CG Ahmed Audi, to prevent all forms of economic sabotage in Nigeria.

    “The residents of the environment alerted the Command of leaked petroleum products, which almost caused panic and fear, leading to the close of some business activities and schools on Thursday.

    “The NNPC maintenance team came to the scene later in the afternoon, after being duly notified by the Command.

    “Maintenance operation was carried out on the lines,” the spokesperson said.

    Abolurin said that the Commandant, NSCDC, Lagos State Command, Commandant of Corps, Mr Usman Alfadarai, had ensured adequate security and safety of lives and properties in the area.

    “The operatives of the Corps had earlier cordoned the affected area to prevent unscrupulous elements from converting the ugly situation into an untoward advantage for themselves.

    “Alfadarai, therefore, directed, immediate 24/7 vigilance, surveillance, patrol and monitoring of the area to avoid further compromise.

    “Alfadarai also warned vandals to desist from the act as the command will not rest on its oars to making sure that saboteurs are brought to book,” he said.

    Abolurin said that the Lagos State Commandant appreciated the inhabitants of the community for offering prompt, credible and actionable intelligence to avoid what would have had a negative impact on the community.

    NSCDC chief confirm killing of 4 officers in Rivers

    Dr Ahmed Audi, Commandant General, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) on Saturday confirmed the killings of four personnel by suspected sea pirates in Rivers.

    Audi confirmed the killing of the deceased officers while addressing troops of NSCDC Command in Rivers, according to a statement issued by the command’s Spokesman, SC Olufemi Ayodele in Port Harcourt.

    He urged the personnel that in spite of the attacks by gunmen they should remain focussed and courageous in their fight against crude oil theft and pipeline vandalism.

    “Let me condole with the command and the families of our gallant men who lost their lives while on duty at Alakiri in Degema Local Government Area of Rivers state.

    “This is part of the hazards of the job, and the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has assured that the blood of the gallant men will not be a waste.

    “I’ll not reveal to the public our operational strategies to bring the perpetrators to book, but we are in collaboration with sister security agencies to ensure that justice is served,” he said.

    Audi said the corps had already initiated the process to deliver the benefits of the deceased victims of the gruesome murder to their next of kins.

    He commended President Bola Tinubu for enhancing the capacity and operational efficiency of the corps through his approvals for the provision of gun boats and improved welfare.

    “So, it is important that personnel continue to put in their best in utmost loyalty, dedication, and discipline in our service to the nation.

    “In spite of the challenges, I am committed to overcoming the inherited challenges, and already, we have made a headway in the clearing of all backlogs of promotion and arrears of payment.

    “Some of the achievements we have made is the introduction of career progression development courses and the promotion of officers to a new rank solely on merit and performance,” he added.

    Audi said that promotion stagnation which kept personnel on the same rank for years as well as inadequate emoluments were now in the past.

    He said the corps under his command and through the minister of interior had made considerable progress in getting the Federal Government to review salaries and allowances of personnel.

    According to him, payments of improved welfare packages are expected to begin as soon as the process is concluded.

    “So, I charge new recruits currently undergoing training to remain focused, fit, and agile as I remain undeterred and dedicated having served the corps for 27 years.

    “The success of any officer lies in diligent service, commitment, and loyalty to the country.

    “The corps has introduced Standard Operating procedures and Code of Conduct to check, correct and punish erring officer, including dismissal, demotion and sanction,” he told the new recruits.
