Eid-el-Fitr: Caution extremists not grounded in Islam, CAN tells Sultan-led NSCIA

The actions of the extremists, CAN said is giving Islam bad names.

The religious body gave the advice in its Eid-el-Fitr message to the NSCIA and Muslims.

CAN prayed that the aftermath of this year Ramadan will usher in peace and unity into the country.

According to a statement issued on Thursday by the General Secretary, Daramola Joseph: “The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) is rejoicing with the leadership of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs and all Muslims in the country as they celebrate the successful completion of this year’s Ramadan. We wish you all Ramadan Mubarak.

“We are not unaware that your fasting was in obedience to the divine directive: “O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous” — Surat Al-Baqarah 2:183. May God answer all your godly prayers offered throughout the month?

“We appeal to the leadership of NSCIA to continue to advice and caution the extremists who are not well grounded in the faith and whose wicked and ungodly actions are giving bad names to Islam. It is trite to know that no godly person will engage in the promotion of violence, kidnapping, banditry and terrorism or identify with the perpetrators.

“We recognize and appreciate the ‘efforts’ that are being made by the Police and other security agencies towards ensuring peaceful celebrations. May God put His fears into the hearts of our leaders to promptly do what is right, justly, and godly. We also pray that those who have compromised and are compromising the security in the country will have a change of mind and those who refused to change will be exposed and sanctioned by the Almighty God Himself”.

Covid-19: NSCIA suspends Ramadan lectures, congregational prayers, I’tikaf

The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has ordered the suspension of annual Tafsir sessions and congregational Tarawih prayers during the upcoming Ramadan in various mosques to contain the spread of the Coronavirus (Covid-19).
The NSCIA gave this directive in a statement by the Director, Administration Mr Yusuf Nwoha, in Abuja.
He said, the decision was reached at the end of stakeholders engagement of the General Purpose Committee meeting of the council in National Mosque, Abuja.
” The General Purpose Committee of the NSCIA under the leadership of its President-General, His Eminence, Alh. Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, in view of the current COVID-19 pandemic considered the reports of the Fatwa Committee and the Ad-hoc Committee on COVID-19 and observed that.
” Scholars of Islam throughout the world are unanimous that the Prophet of Islam warned against the spread of contagious diseases and urged Muslims to prevent the spread.
” The closure of the two Holy Mosques in the Kingdom of Saudi-Arabia for both congregational worship and social functions, which is applauded by Islamic Scholars throughout the world, is a pointer to its compliance to the Prophetic teachings on the subject matter” he said.
He noted that, one of the obligatory religious activity such as the weekly friday prayers was suspended as part of measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus among muslims.
”Jum’ah, as an obligatory religious activity, which is temporarily suspended to prevent the spread of COVID 19 outweighs the performance of any meritorious religious act such as congregational Tarawih and the conduct of Tafsir.
”Consequently, the Council directs that congregational Tarawih in the Mosque and the va1rious Majalis Tafsir (sessions) and I’tikaf during the month of Ramadan of 1441 A.H be suspended.
” Individual Scholars and Organisations are therefore encouraged to employ available means of disseminating information such as radio, television, other virtual facilities, print, social and traditional media for dissemination of tafsir and other da’awah activities” he said(
  • ‘Kukah’s comment on Buhari misleading’

The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Tuesday night, described, as misleading, a comment on the President, Major General Mohammed Buhari (rtd.) by the Bishop of Sokoto Catholic Diocese, Matthew Kukah.

The Head, Media and Communications, NSCIA, Ibrahim Aselemi, made this available to newsmen.

Kukah had, earlier on Tuesday, hit Buhari in his sermon at the Good Shepherd Major Seminary, Kaukau in the Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State before the burial of Michael Nnadi, a seminarian, who was killed by kidnappers.

He recalled Buhari’s promise during the 2015 electioneering. He stated that while campaigning in 2015, Buhari said if he was elected, the world would not have to worry about insecurity in Nigeria.

Kukah said five years after, the President had brought nepotism and clannishness into the military and the ancillary security agencies.

The cleric had said, “This President has displayed the greatest degree of insensitivity in managing our country’s rich diversity. He has subordinated the larger interests of the country to the hegemonic interests of his co-religionists and clansmen and women.”

According to Kukah, under Buhari, the impression that has been created is that “to hold a key and strategic position in Nigeria today, it is more important to be a northern Muslim than a Nigerian.”

In the response sent to our correspondent, Aselemi said utterances of religious leaders should be guided by cohesion.

He stated, “The comments by Rev Fr. Mathew Hassan Kukah, a leader we admire so much is very unfortunate. As religious leaders, our utterances should be guided by trio of national cohesion, security and love for our fatherland.

“The comments are misleading and carefully crafted to weaken confidence of Nigerians on Buhari’s government. Are the duo of Emefiele and Obiora Muslims from the North? Yet, Buhari appointed them Governor and Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria. Rev Fr Kukah is being economical with the truth.”
