The statement said,  “NUJ has received with shock, the brazen and barbaric attack by suspected kidnappers.

”The attack resulted in the abduction of  the Kaduna State Correspondents of The Nation  Newspaper and the Blue Newspaper, alongside  their families last night at  their residences in Danhono area, a Kaduna suburb, in Chikun LGA.

“We  strongly condemn the ugly incident and appeal to the security agencies in the state to swing into action with a view to rescuing the journalists and their families from the kidnappers’ den.”

“The Kaduna State Council of NUJ, however, enjoined all practicing journalists in the state to be vigilant in their daily activities while also praying for the safe return of their abducted colleagues and their families.”

NUJ calls for immediate release of Onuorah

The FCT Council of Nigeria Union of Journalist (NUJ) on Thursday in Abuja called for the immediate release of Mr Madu Onuorah,  Editor-in-Chief of the Globalupfront Online Newspaper.

In a statement jointly signed by its Chairman and Secretary, Òsárétín Òsádébàmwén and Ochiaka Ugwu respectively, the council expressed worries over the spate of harassment of journalists in the guise of making arrest  by the Police.

“While we are not averse to the right of citizens to seek redress over legitimate infringement on their rights, we believe that constitutional means should be strictly adhered to in doing this.

“A condemnable case in point, is the commando like raiding of the home of Onuorah.

“The manner of arrest leaves much to be desired from a legitimate force of the state; the Nigeria Police which should have been civil, instead, intimidated and forcefully whisked away Onuorah in a manner akin to kidnapping.

“We condemn this total abuse of power laced with intimidation and demand his immediate release,” the council stressed.

The council insisted that, in a situation where a citizen or organisation is believed to have a case to answer, the constitutional path should be activated and followed.

“The NUJ will continue to hold the government and its institutions accountable for the people”.

NUJ FCT condemns kidnap of Onuorah, Editor-in-Chief, Globalupfront (online) newspaper

    …wants him released immediate

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja Council, has denounced what it described as ‘the commando-like raiding’ of the home of Mr. Madu Onuorah, Editor-in-Chief of Globalupfront newspaper, an online platform, and his subsequent abduction by security agents, warning that the spate of police harassment of journalists under the guise of making arrests is becoming unbearable.

In a statement signed by Secretary of the Council, Mr. Ochiaka Ugwu, the NUJ Abuja wondered why the police would appear to have resorted to this mode of arrest in recent time, pointing out that while “we are not averse to citizens seeking redress over legitimate infringements on their rights, we believe that constitutional means should be strictly adhered to in doing this.”

“A condemnable case in point is the commando like raiding of the home of Mr. Madu Onuorah, Editor-in-Chief of the Globalupfront Newspaper (Online),” the NUJ declared. “The manner of arrest leaves much to be desired from a legitimate force of the State, the Nigeria Police which should have been civil instead of intimidating and forcefully whisking away Mr. Onuorah in a manner akin to kidnapping.”

Condemning what it called “this total abuse of power laced with intimidation”, the NUJ FCT demanded the immediate release of Mr. Onuorah, former Abuja Bureau Chief of The Guardian, whom the Council praised as a “thoroughbred professional” who has always practised by the tenets of the profession.

“We insist that where any citizen or organisation believes he (Mr. Onuorah), who is also a former Managing Director of The Authority, an Abuja-based national newspaper, has a case to answer, then the constitutional path should be activated and followed” and certainly not through arrest by abduction.

“Let it be known that the NUJ will never stop holding the government and its institutions accountable to the people,” the FCT Council surmised.

  • Rivers: Coalition of 92 CSOs ask NJC to beam its searchlight on Justice Wali+PHOTOS

Rivers: Coalition of 92 CSOs ask NJC to beam its searchlight on Justice Wali+PHOTOS

….may go to court over negation of Rule of Law in Rivers

A coalition of 92 Civil Society Organisations, CSOs under the aegis of Centre for Credible Leadership and Citizens Awareness, CCLCA, has called on the National Judicial Commission, NJC to immediately beam its searchlight Justice Charles Wali of Rivers State High Court for issuing a controversial expate motion despite a subsisting order of a federal High Court.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports the Director General of CCLCA, Dr Gabriel Nwambu made this disclosure at press briefing in Abuja on Monday.

The coalition further stressed that if the situation is not quickly addressed by the NJC it will go to Court to seek redress.
    Hear them:

The Centre for Credible Leadership and Citizens Awareness as a coalition of civil rights organization committed to good governance, upholding the principles of justice and the rule of law as the watchdog of the society has been watching with keen interest the latest unfolding events in Rivers State,Nigeria which by the mildest possible term is not synonymous to true democracy and democratic principles in line with global best practice. The rift between the Executive and the Legislative arms of Government and the actions of the chief executive officer in Rivers State which is akin to anarchy is becoming worrisome.

“Firstly, Hon. Justice J.K. Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja gave a judgement stating that the Assembly led by Rt. Hon. Martins Amaewhule is recognized by law and certified by the court.
In order 4 given by J.K. Omotosho that the 11th defendant which is the Governor of Rivers State in suit FHC/ABJ/CS/1613/2023 between the Rivers State House of Assembly and Rt. Hon. Amaewhule and others states that the 11th defendant is prohibited from making any request, presentation of nomination to any other house of Assembly other than that led by Rt. Hon. Martins Amaewhule. That judgement is subsisting.

” That judgement has not been set aside.
In another suit pending before the FCT High Court in suit FHC/ABJ/CS/1681/2024 before Hon. Justice Okoro before the Rivers State House of Assembly and INEC concerning the defection of the 27 Assembly members, the court gave an injunction restraining the INEC and the defendants from declaring the seats vacant and from proceeding to conduct elections to fill any vacancy. The first judgement made by Hon. Justice J.K. Omotosho is still subsisting and has not been set aside, the second order made by Justice Okoro has not been vacated.

“Now, the order made by Justice C.N. Wali of the Rivers State High Court recognizing the 3 law makers contradicts clearly the provisions of section 272(3) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as Amended which states that a State High Court has no jurisdiction to entertain matters bothering on the tenure of the State Assembly. This means that the Rivers State High Court also lack jurisdiction to make an order.

” In other words, the order made by Justice C.N. Wali amounts to Forum Shopping, Abuse of Court Process and tantamount to self help.

” Consequently, as a coalition of Civil Rights Organizations, we can not allow such threat to our hard earned democracy to thrive in Nigeria where we operate a constitution, where the rule of law should be practiced to the letter.

“Ladies and gentlemen, we are talking about a purported assembly where 3 persons parade themselves as law makers for an entire state contradicting clearly the provisions of section 96(1) as amendment which defines one-third (1/3) as what constitutes a quorum. If for any reason the assembly can not form a quorum, the assembly shall adjourn. It is never the intendment of those who crafted the 1999 Constitution that only 3 lawmakers shall be enacting laws for the people.

“Again, the chief executive of Rivers State relocated the Legislative Arm of Government, an institution of government, to commence sitting inside the Government House. This singular act is not consistent with the principle of Separation of Power, a complete abberation, desecration and denigration of our Constitution.

“Again, the purported screening of a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Dagogo Iboroma, before an illegitimate House of Assembly is an affront to the integrity of our legal system and a contemptuous act towards court judgments. The Federal High Court, in Suit No FHC/ABJ/CS/1613/2023, clearly ruled that only the Amaewhule-led Assembly of 27 members can determine who their clerk is. We urge Dagogo Iboroma, SAN, and all leaders of the Bar to uphold the sanctity of the law and refrain from participating in actions that undermine the Constitution and the authority of the Federal courts.

“Despite the unambiguous provision of Section 272(3) of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended without vacating a subsisting Order has gone ahead perpetrating illegality and contempt of court.

“Furthermore, we deplore Governor Sim Fubara’s intention to probe the immediate past administration.
“The Governor should also be reminded that the immediate past administration was where him served as Accountant General of Rivers State. The fact that he is calling for a probe of an administration for which he served as the chief accounting officer of the state already speaks volumes on his real intention for the said probe.

“Such actions already depicts a colouration of a hidden political motives in the enquiry and therefore has voided every outcome or report of such panel of enquiry.

“Moreover, Governor Fubara’s alleged plan to demolish the State House of Assembly is an assault on democracy and an attempt to silence opposition voices in Rivers state. The democratic process thrives on the existence of independent legislative bodies, and any attempts to undermine their autonomy should be condemned in the strongest possible term.

“Lastly, we are deeply concerned about reports suggesting that the chief executive is spending Rivers State funds outside the realm of appropriation. A replication of corruption, abuse of power and due process. This act contravenes the principles of fiscal responsibility and accountability. Public funds should be managed prudently and in accordance with the law.

“We urge the appropriate authorities to investigate these allegations thoroughly and take appropriate actions to safeguard the interests of the citizens.

“As a Coalition of Civil Rights Organizations, we firmly stand against these illegal activities and actions of Chief Executive of Rivers State. We call on all citizens, civil society organizations, and leaders of the Bar and the Bench to join us in defending the rule of law, upholding democratic tenets and principles, and safeguarding our constitutionally guaranteed rights.

“We will take all necessary steps to oppose these desecrations of our courts and the noble profession of law. “Together, we can ensure that justice prevails and the rights of the people in Rivers State are protected.

“Sport does not have a language. Sport is an integral activity that unites the people and has the power to change the world irrespective of religion, ethnic and political background.

“This is our own little way of contributing and lending our voice to national unity, peace and harmony.

  • NUJ warns against crackdown on Nigerian media, journalists

NUJ warns against crackdown on Nigerian media, journalists

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has warned against the upsurge of attacks on media organizations and journalists by public officeholders in the country over the publication of critical reports.

NUJ’s cautioning follows recent arrests, detention, and release of some journalists by Police and Military authorities over “allegations of criminal defamation and cyberstalking.” As well as an investigative report by the International Center for Investigative Reporting (ICIR) that raised concerns over the spike in clampdown on media practitioners by the state.

Achike Chude, NUJ’s National Secretary, made the position of the journalists’ body known during an anti-corruption radio program, PUBLIC CONSCIENCE, produced by PRIMORG, on Wednesday, 15 May 2024, in Abuja.

Chude called on federal and state governments to create an enabling environment for all Nigerians to thrive, devoid of harassment, intimidation, and repression of journalists, while urging public officeholders to follow due process in seeking redress against media reports other than suppressing and hounding journalists.

“We have a country today under security threats and all we want for things to work. We want a country that is secured because it is only in that secured environment that the journalist himself can operate in a secured manner,” He stated.

Chude disclosed that Nigeria’s challenges as a democratic country reflect the level of press freedom, adding that the rising attacks on journalists have been liberalized, with the ugly incidents not only happening at the federal level but across states in the country.

“The fact that there are increasing threats on the media or the journalists in Nigeria is based on the facts, and If you look at what has happened from 1999 to date, you will see that there has been an upsurge in the attacks of journalists and what makes it even much more worrisome is that you can now talk about the liberalization of the attacks on the media.”

Chude said the NUJ is committed to protecting journalists and waging a severe war against purveyors of fake news and unethical practices in the media industry.

Ijeoma Opara, an investigative reporter with ICIR, called on the President Bola Tinubu-led government to match their promise of upholding press freedom with action, urging for a review of the ambiguities in the Cybercrime Act, which predisposes journalists to “undue” arrests.

Opara urged governments at all levels to find ways to assist the media in discharging their duties, which has the backing of the constitution. “those using state powers to suppress journalists and media houses should be made to face the full weight of law if the government is ready to support press freedom.”

She called on Nigerians to speak up against the shrinking of the media and civic space as it has a ripple effect on the well-being of the citizenry.

“The Cybercrime Act of 2015, before it was amended, had been a source of concern because people had been worried about the language of the law and very recently, it was amended. Though commendable, there are still ambiguities with the language, and there is still the concern that it can be manipulated to crack down on journalists.

“While the journalist has the responsibility to report whatever is seen or witnessed bearing in mind public good, the journalist also has the responsibility to tell the truth. But we must look at Cybercrime laws, the language, and their ambiguity.

“Freedom of the press is freedom for every member of society, and I feel that both those in the corridor of power and regular Nigerians should actively be involved and call for a free press because, at the end of the day, it is for the good of everybody,” Opara stated.

On her part, Fauziya Mohammed Lukman, a Person With Disability (PWD) and reporter with Global TV, decried a hostile operating environment for journalists with disability at government parastatals.

Lukman called on the government to intervene, stressing that PWDs in the media industry are not spared from the problem of intimidation and harassment.

“I feel the government should lay more emphasis on the fact that there are journalists who have disabilities because even with disability, you have the right to do anything you want to do

“Government should come to the aid of this individual (PWDs) because it’s not easy going out knowing fully well that you may be confronted with rejection and belittling,” Lukman lamented.

She further stated: “For some reason, the press is losing its value in society. Public officials and individuals are no longer according to media people as they used to be.

“At the moment, the environment is callous for persons with a disability because unless you are working in a very highly recognized Media institution, your chances of getting invites or participating in events are minimal. So it isn’t very safe for some of the reporters.

“I went to cover an event, and I was told I wasn’t invited, but I told them I was only there for my personal goal as a journalist, and they tried to refuse access, but I stood my ground and threatened to write bad about them if they didn’t let me in, and I was allowed to cover the event,” Lukman added.

Public Conscience is a syndicated weekly anti-corruption radio program PRIMORG uses to draw government and citizens’ attention to corruption and integrity issues in Nigeria.

The program has the support of the MacArthur Foundation.

  • Press freedom: Tinubu charged on protection of journalists

Press freedom: Tinubu charged on protection of journalists

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Correspondents Chapel has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to unveil his administration’s plan and agenda on safety measures and mechanisms for media practitioners and workers in Nigeria.

The union described the toxic and hostile environment in which the media have been operating over the years, thereby putting their lives in danger, as absurd, ridiculous and unacceptable.

The NUJ FCT Correspondents Chapel stated this on Friday in a statement jointly signed by Comrade Jide Oyekunle and Raphael Oni, Chairman and Secretary respectively, to commemorate World Press Freedom Day 2024 in Abuja.

“Today we join the rest of the world to mark this year’s World Press Freedom Day. It is expedient to remind the Nigerian government of its legal obligation to defend and protect the fundamental rights of the Nigerian people, including press freedom and freedom of expression as guaranteed by section 36 of the 1999 Constitution and Article 19 of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

“The media space is shrinking, hostile and suffocating on a daily basis due to intolerant posture of some government officials to criticisms and dissenting voices.

“We, therefore, call on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to come out clear with comprehensive safety measures and mechanisms for the protection of Nigerian journalists and media workers to enable them perform their essential and constitutional role in democracy.

“Journalists in Nigeria face significant safety risks, including harassment, intimidation, and physical attacks while carrying out their duties.

“We demand concrete steps to protect  journalists while carrying out their role as watchdog of society and to ensure that those responsible for various attacks on journalists in the past are brought to justice.

“We demand accountability on the part of the government and security agents and make those uncultured security operatives who have no respect for democratic tenets and values to face the full wrath of the law.

“These attacks are unacceptable and must stop. Journalists must be able to carry out their work without fear of violence or retribution.

“We will not abdicate our statutory

responsibility in upholding the fundamental objectives of the directive principles of the state policy of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended

“We have continued to emphasise that journalism is not a crime, journalism is not an opposition, journalism is the oxygen of democracy and positive change and development of any democratic society.

“If democracy is about good governance, accountability and transparency, then press freedom should not be denied, curtailed, restricted or taken away”.

NUJ thrown into mourning as ace sports journalist, Akota dies in Abuja

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has been thrown into mourning following the death of ace sports journalist, Albert Akota.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Akota, described as a “dedicated newsman”, was the Chairman of People’s Daily Chapel of the NUJ FCT Council until his death.

The ace sports journalist died on Saturday at the Maitama District Hospital in Abuja after a protracted illness, leaving behind his wife and three children.

The NUJ FCT Council has expressed shock over the demise of Akota, describing it as a great loss to the Union and the journalism profession.

In a statement on Sunday, jointly signed by Comrades Osaretin Osadebamwen and Ochiaka Ugwu, Chairman and Secretary of Council, respectively, the Council noted that the death of the ace sportswriter came as a rude shock.

It stated that the late Akota was not only a strong member of the Council, who never missed any Council’s activities, but a committed Comrade who was always desirous to lend a helping hand to colleagues whenever the need arose.

“The former Sport Editor would be remembered for his invaluable contributions to the growth of the journalism profession, and NUJ as the umbrella body of all practising journalists.

“It is a sad and grieving moment for the NUJ family, and Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) in particular. It is more worrying that he died when his services were most needed by the council and his medium, People’s Daily.

“Akota was a dedicated newsman, an exemplary, unpretentious and hard-working Journalist, who discharged his duties with diligence, devotion and integrity.

“Akota was modest, calm and gentle during his lifetime and would be greatly missed by his colleagues and fans.

“Make no mistake about it, the Council has lost an industrious and active member to the cold hands of death. It is more painful that he died when his services are mostly needed,” the statement reads.
