  • Imo Govt. reacts to report on Okorocha, Nwosu’s defection to SDP

The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor of Imo State, Sam Onwuemeodo has stated that the Governor, Rochas Okorocha and Ugwumba Uche Nwosu are not defecting from the All Progressives Congress (APC) describing the rumor as ‘cock and bull’ story.

Onwuemeodo in a press statement on Thursday said barely 48 hours to the submission of the Governorship and House of Assembly Candidates to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) by Political Parties, “the known fraudsters in Imo politics who have sneaked into Imo APC have come up with the cheap and unfounded rumor of Governor Rochas Okorocha and Ugwumba Uche Nwosu leaving APC for SDP.

Their first claim was ADC”. Some factions in the state chapter of the party is not comfortable with the choice of Ugwumba Uche Nwosu as the governorship flag bearer in the 2019 general election for being a son in-law to the incumbent governor, Okorocha.

“Like we had intoned, this baseless rumor was manufactured by these fraudsters and been marketed by their agents on the social media.

“Nobody builds a befitting house and abandon it for those who are facing criminal charges for issuance of Dud Cheques and failure to declare their assets.

Rochas Okorocha is the ‘landlord’ of Imo APC in particular and that of the South-East in general. And he has the onerous task of ensuring that those recruited to destroy the Party in the State and indeed in the South-East do not have their way.

“With the facts on ground, Uche Nwosu is the only one that has a valid claim to make with regard to the question of who is the governorship Candidate of APC for Imo State. And nobody would expect such a person to leave the party for someone who has nothing tangible to hold unto.

Those who are still in doubt about what the situation should be in the case of Imo APC should read INEC’s decision on Ogun State People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Candidates’ list”.

The statement further added that; “For the cock and bull story of SDP or ADC, people should disregard such weightless and unfounded social media creation as there is no cause for alarm”.

His father-in-law and incumbent Governor of the state, Rochas Okorocha, was also elected as the party’s senatorial candidate for Imo West Senatorial District.

This is coming after the National Working Committee had cancelled the earlier primary which produced two aspirants — Senator Hope Uzodinma and Nwosu — as candidates and ordered for a rescheduled primary on Saturday.

Announcing the results of the rescheduled primary at the APC Secretariat in Owerri in the early hours of Sunday, the chairman of the electoral panel, Ibrahim Agbabiaka, said that Nwosu polled a total of 269,524 votes to defeat eight other aspirants.

Agbabiaka said, “With the powers vested in me as the state returning officer, I hereby declare Uche Nwosu as the winner of the 2018 governorship primary in Imo State for the 2019 general election.”

Uzodinma and five other aspirants, Madumere, Gbujie, Nlemoha, Eche, and Ejiogu had, on Saturday, announced that they would not be taking part in the rescheduled primary, saying that they were sticking to one of the results of the first contentious primary which was cancelled by NWC.

The panel also announced that Governor Okorocha polled 141,117 votes to defeat Uzodinma and Osita Izunaso, who garnered 1,359 and 24 votes respectively.

They also announced the immediate past commissioner for information in the state, Prof. Nnamdi Obiaraeri, as the winner of Imo North senatorial primary.

The panel disclosed that the professor of law got 67,438 votes to defeat the incumbent senator for the zone, Benjamin Uwajumogu, who got 5,743 votes.

Emma Ojinere was declared the winner of Imo East senatorial primary, having scored a total of 41,562 votes, as against Chima Anthony who got 37,815 votes and Max Igwe’s 275 votes.

Nwosu, in his speech, shortly after he was declared the winner, said that he would immediately commence the process of reconciling with all the aspirants who lost out to him in the primary.

He said that what was utmost now that the primaries had come and gone was to make sure that APC wins the general elections in the state.

He declared his emergence as a major political milestone in the annals of political history in the state, saying, “To my fellow youths, I am holding this mandate in trust for you. I shall not let you down.

Together, we shall move into Government House in 2019.”

  • Supreme Court affirms election of Ikpeazu, fines Nwosu N4m

The Supreme Court on Friday in Abuja dismissed an application filed by Mr Friday Nwosu, praying the court to disqualify Mr Okezie Ikpeazu as democratically elected governor of Abia.

Nwosu, a governorship aspirant in the 2014 PDP governorship primaries had challenged the nomination and emergence of Ikpeazu as the state governor on the grounds that he submitted “false’’ tax papers to INEC.

He had urged the court to nullify the election of Ikpeazu and declare him (Nwosu) the governor of Abia.

Justice Amina Adamu-Augie, in the lead judgment, described the appeal as “frivolous and lacking in merit’’.

The Justice awarded fine of N4 million against the appellant (Nwosu) to be paid N1 million each to four respondents to the appeal.

The respondents in the suit are Mr Samson Ogah, the Peoples’ Democratic Party, (PDP), Ikpeazu and the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC).

The lead judgment was read on behalf of Justice Augie by Justice Sidi Bage.

Nwosu had, in his appeal, challenged the judgment of the Court of Appeal sitting in Owerri which declined jurisdiction in the case.

The appellate court panel of five Justices presided over by Justice Jimi Bada had ruled that it lacked the jurisdiction to hear and determine the appeal.

Specifically, the court held that Nwosu’s appeal was similar to the suit also filed against Ikpeazu by Uche Ogah which the apex court had decided on May 12, 2017.

Nwosu, who contested the Dec. 8, 2014 PDP governorship primaries had accused Ikpeazu of submitting false information and fake tax documents to INEC.

He had instituted the suit at the Federal High Court, Owerri, presided over by Justice A.L. Lewis.

Justice Lewis had on July 8, 2016, dismissed the suit for lacking in merit.

Dissatisfied with the verdict, he proceeded to the Court of Appeal and finally, the Supreme Court.

  • Imo 2019: Okorocha can’t manipulate me if I become governor – Nwosu

The Chief of Staff and son-in-law to Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State, Uche Nwosu on Saturday, said the incumbent can’t manipulate him (Nwosu) if he becomes the state governor in 2019.

Recall that Governor Okorocha as at different occasions tipped Nwosu as the next governor of the state.

The endorsement has sparked a row in the state especially from the opposition, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Nwosu, who spoke in an interview with The Punch dismissed the insinuation that he would be manipulated to do the bidding of Okorocha if elected as governor.

He said, “This is another tool of blackmail employed by mischievous politicians who have been dislodged in the state. Some people are saying they do not want me to be governor because I am Okorocha’s son-in-law. They claimed that if I become governor, Governor Okorocha would manipulate me and tell me what to do. If tomorrow they say Uche Nwosu is the governor, Okorocha will not say, ‘let me give him a list’ like other people do.”

He advised other governorship aspirants in the state to discuss their plans and programmes for the people of the state instead of criticising his ambition because he is an in-law to the governor.

He added, “Yes, I am a son-in-law to Rochas Okorocha and I am very much proud to be his son-in-law. In most of the countries of the world, let me just start with (United States) President Donald Trump; his son-in-law is an adviser and America never went up in flame. George Bush was the President of the United States and after his tenure, his son became President and America never went haywire.

Governor Okorocha will not impose somebody on the people. Naturally, the time will come when the people will choose who they want to govern them.”

  • 2019: 27 Imo lawmakers endorse Okorocha’s son-in-law for governor

Legislators of the Imo State Assembly have endorsed Governor Rochas Okorocha’s son-inlaw, Chief Uche Nwosu, for the governorship of Imo State ahead the 2019 general election.

This was disclosed yesterday by Hon. Henry Uzoma Ezediaro member representing Oguta state constituency in the Assembly and House committee chairman on Petroleum, ISOPADEC and NDDC. Briefing newsmen Saturday in Owerri, the Imo State capital, Ezediaro said that following consultations and meetings by the state legislators, they have resolved that election of Nwosu as the state governor in 2019 would ensure the continuation of the programmes of the current administration.

Ezediaro said, “Without Uche Nwosu as governor in 2019‚ most of the on going projects and laudable programmes of the Okorocha administration in the state would be abandoned by any person who has not been part and parcel of the current administration.

  • EFCC arrests man for defrauding Taiwanese woman of $1.2m

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arrested one Chinedu Nwosu for allegedly defrauding a Taiwanese businesswoman of $1.2m.

TheNewsGuru.com gathered that Nwosu was arrested following a petition by the Taiwanese, Ivy Hung, in which she alleged that the suspect defrauded her company, Pollen Corporation, of the said sum.

In a petition written by the lawyer for the company, Mr. Pius Okeoma, and addressed to the EFCC Chairman, Mr. Ibrahim Magu, the petitioner alleged that the suspect and his wife were involved in the scam.

It was said that the couple sold the goods, but refused to pay the company.

Instead, Chinedu allegedly diverted the money to personal use by investing part of the sum in a transport company, African Eagle Multi-Transport Services Limited, which he co-founded with some Chinese.

He was said to have issued some cheques in part payment of the sum, but the cheques were dishonoured on the grounds of lack of funds when presented at a bank.

The petition read in part, “Our client has made several efforts to reach the said Mr. Chinedu Nwosu, including going to his business addresses in Asaba (Delta State), Nnewi and Onitsha to make him to put a value to the cheques and honour the content of the debit notes to no avail.

“Mr. Nwosu kept hiding from our client. This attitude and the non-payment of the various sums in the debit notes have put our client into untold hardship and doubts to further trust and do business in Nigeria.

“Consequently, we write that you use your good offices to investigate these allegations and prosecute the offender to serve as a deterrent to others and restore confidence in the business environment in Nigeria.”

It was learnt that months after receiving the petition, the EFCC was able to arrest Chinedu.

He had spent over a week in the custody of the commission and was said to have made useful statements to the EFCC operatives.
