OAU to lift ban on on students’ Union in honour of late Afenifere spokesman, Odumakin

The Vice Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile Ife, Osun State, Professor Eyitope Ogunbodede, has described the death of Afenifere’s spokesman, Yinka Odumakin, as not only tragic but a monumental loss to the country, the human rights community and OAU.

According to Ogunbodede in a statement on Monday, the best tribute that the university can pay to Odumakin is to lift the proscription imposed on students’ union activities in the institution.

The statement read, “The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Eyitope Ogunbodede has paid glowing tribute to Yinka Odumakin on behalf of the Management, Staff and Students of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife. In particular, the University rightly recalled the fact that Yinka was the Public Relations Officer of the virile Students Union from 1986-1987.

“However, in his lifetime, Yinka Odumakin always acknowledged that the experience acquired by him as a student leader at the Obafemi Awolowo University contributed to his development and understanding of the society. Consequently, he had cause to express concern over the penchant of the Management to proscribe the virile student union of the University.

“Therefore, the best tribute that the University can pay to Yinka is to lift the proscription imposed on the student union of the Obafemi Awolowo University as soon as possible.”

The late Afenifere leader died last Saturday at the intensive care unit of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital where he was being managed for respiratory issues due to complications from COVID-19.

OAU gives update on mobilisation for NYSC 2021 Batch A

Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has assured its students that they will be mobilised for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) 2021 Batch A.

Mr Abiodun Olarewaju, the Public Relations Officer, who gave the assurance on Thursday in Ile-Ife, debunked rumours that only OAU had not submitted the names of its students for Batch A Corps members.

According to him, no Federal University has submitted the names of their prospective students for NYSC scheme till date.

“What we did was to travel to Abuja to effect some corrections and to bring back the corrected document for possible uploading for today or latest tomorrow.

“Actually, there’s tendency that as I am speaking with you that their names must have been uploaded to NYSC portal today.

“I am assuring you that nothing whatsoever will delay the forwarding of the names of our students between today and tomorrow to NYSC portal,” he further assured in an interview with NAN.

Olarewaju said that the Senate had confirmed their results and they had been found worthy in character and learning, which had confirmed them to be graduates of the university.

He said that since it was mandatory for them to serve their father land for a year after graduation, the management had no reason to keep them in the university or in their respective parents’ houses.

Similarly, Prof. Isiaka Aransi, the Dean, Student Affairs (DSA) of OAU, told NAN that the department was working seriously to meet the NYSC guidelines given for mobilisation of their students for Batch A service.

Aransi said that the staff had gone to Abuja for corrections of all mistakes on the list, adding, “thank God that they arrived safely yesterday with perfect document.’’

He assured that unfailingly today or latest March 5, the names would be uploaded to the NYSC portal and pledged that none of them would miss the Batch A as scheduled.

A graduate of OAU, Ademola Abbey, who studied Literature in English, expressed delight that there was “green light’’ that his set would meet up with Batch A service.

“We have been waiting for registration but we were kept waiting and they kept telling us that they are working on it.

“But today, I saw a message on my WhatsApp that by the end of the day, everything would be fine and tomorrow by God’s grace we’ll be able to do the registration,” he said.

Abbey said that the staff of the students affairs office were seriously busy with their list “hopefully today, they will round it up and by tomorrow, we’ll start our registration.’’

“So I have 100 per cent assurance that my set will meet the Batch A NYSC; I therefore commend the OAU management and DSA staff for their cooperation toward our success in life,’’ he said.

  • Poll: Returning Officer not from Ondo, OAU-INEC

Poll: Returning Officer not from Ondo, OAU-INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission on Friday ruled out the appointment of the Vice-Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Prof. Eyitope Ogunbodede as the Returning Officer for the Ondo State governorship election.

INEC said while it would not be drawn into rumors relating to the performance of its constitutional and statutory functions, the RO for Saturday Ondo State governorship election “is not from Ondo State and not from OAU Ile-Ife.”

INEC National Commissioner and Chairman (Information and Voter Education Committee), Festus Okoye, made the explanation in a statement in Abuja on Friday.

According to him, the RO would report to the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Ondo State on the date conveyed in his letter of appointment issued several days ago.

He was countering a statement by the Chairman, National Campaign Council of the Peoples Democratic Party and Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, rejecting the choice of the OAU VC as Chief Returning Officer for the election.

Makinde had said, “We are speaking in particular about the appointment of Prof. Eyitope Ogungbenro Ogunbodede, the Vice-Chancellor of OAU, Ile-Ife, as the Chief Returning Officer of the Ondo State governorship election.

“The PDP totally rejects Prof. Eyitope Ogungbenro Ogunbodede acting as Chief Returning Officer. He is a known crony of Rotimi Akeredolu SAN, candidate of the All Progressives Congress and hails from Owo, the same hometown as the candidate. He cannot be a fair party in the proceedings by virtue of their association.”

But Okoye noted that the RO for the governorship election is not from the state and not from OAU Ile-Ife.

He said, “While the commission will not be drawn into speculations relating to the performance of its constitutional and statutory functions, it is imperative to set the records straight for the benefit of the people of Ondo State and the integrity of the electoral process.

“It is the sole responsibility of the commission to appoint a Returning Officer for the Ondo governorship election and does not share this responsibility with any individual, group or political party.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the Returning Officer for the Ondo Governorship election is not from Ondo State and not from the University mentioned in the said press conference.

“The Returning Officer appointed by the commission will report to the REC for Ondo State on the date conveyed in his letter of appointment issued several days ago.

“The commission is firmly focused on the conduct of free, fair and peaceful election and implores all the stakeholders to cooperate and play their own part in ensuring peaceful election and not to engage in unhelpful speculation.

“The main concern of the commission is in ensuring a credible electoral process while the outcome is in the hands of the people of Ondo State.”

  • OAU sex-for-mark lecturer released from prison two years after

A lecturer at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, Richard Akindele, jailed for sexual harassment has been released from prison after serving a two-year term.

The Cable, an online newspaper, reports that Akindele, a professor of management accounting, was released about two weeks ago.

A Federal High Court in Osogbo, Osun State, in 2018 had sentenced Akindele to prison after he pleaded guilty to four counts filed against him by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission. The Commission had investigated sexual harassment allegations levelled against the professor by a female student, Monica Osagie.

Justice Maureen Onyetenu, who had to stand down the case two times, before finally giving her judgement, rejected a plea bargain agreed by the parties involved and insisted that the professor must be punished as a warning to higher institution lecturers in the habit of molesting female students.

Justice Onyetenu sentenced Akindele to 24 months imprisonment for asking Osagie for a sexual benefit and another 24 months jail term for soliciting sexual benefit from the victim to pass her.

The judge also sentenced Akindele to 12 months imprisonment for deleting parts of the WhatsApp conversation between him and Osagie to conceal evidence against him and sentenced him to another 12 months for falsification of age.

She held that the jail terms would run concurrently implying that the convict would spend 24 months.

In an audio which went viral online, Akindele was heard demanding five rounds of sex from Osagie to award her a pass mark in a course she failed.

  • 2019: Ogun APC candidate, Dapo Abiodun admits dropping out of OAU

2019: Ogun APC candidate, Dapo Abiodun admits dropping out of OAU

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun, has said the contention over his academic credentials is an attempt at mudslinging, adding that he never claimed to have graduated from the Obafemi Awolowo University (formerly University of Ife).

A suit filed earlier this month at a High Court in Abuja sought Abiodun’s disqualification from the governorship race for allegedly giving “false information” in the academic qualification he submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission

Abiodun, in an appearance on Sunday Politics, a live programme on Channels Television, however, said he had never misrepresented his educational credentials to anyone.

The APC candidate stated, “I never claimed to have finished from the University of Ife (now OAU). I did go to school in Ife. I went to school in the University of Ife but I didn’t graduate from the University of Ife. I never claimed to have obtained a degree from the University of Ife.”

When asked specifically about the Bachelor of Arts in Accounting degree he claimed to have, Abiodun said he would not comment further.

When also asked to state the school he earned his degree from, the APC candidate said doing so would not be proper since the matter was in court.

But that (degree) is not from Ife. This has all been an attempt to mudsling and confuse the electorate, and it’s bundled with a lot of half-truths.

I never claimed to have studied Accounting at the University of Ife. I never claimed to have graduated from the University of Ife. So, this issue has been presented as the presenter wanted it presented. I do have a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Accounting and I would like to stop at that.

The electorate know that I went to school and I have not misrepresented to anyone about my degrees. But it would be convenient for those who are intimidated and afraid of my electoral success to continue to attempt to disparage me and to present the matter as falsely as it suits them. The facts are being distorted but we will leave the matter since it is in court.”

Abiodun also said the APC chieftain, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, was not responsible for his victory at the party’s primary in Ogun State as reported in some quarters.

The APC candidate has been rejected by Governor Ibikunle Amosun, who has endorsed Adekunle Akinlade of the Allied Peoples Movement as his candidate.

Abiodun further denied claims that he won the primary as a result of his alleged closeness to Tinubu and a former Ogun State governor, Chief Olusegun Osoba.

He said, “These are accusations that have been thrown all over the place and it is not unusual in politics for people to mudsling and say things to try and bring the other person down. It’s convenient for people to say one is favoured.

I don’t see how Asiwaju, who is our leader, favouring me, had influenced the elections. I never saw any endorsement before my election.

Chief Osoba is the leader of the party in the state. He took me by the hand because I am now the candidate of the party, so everybody in the party must now support me. That is the way it works. The governor (Ibikunle Amosun) has chosen not to support me. Ideally, my governor and I should be on the same page.

So, if you have emerged through a process and you have now become the candidate of the party, everybody who is your leader in that party in that state (and) outside that state, in that geopolitical zone, should be supporting you. Anyone not supporting you amounts to something else.”

Asked to confirm if he was the favourite of the APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, in the primary, Abiodun said, “I don’t know about ‘favoured candidate.’ I don’t think primary elections are won by favoured candidates. Adams Oshiomhole did not come to conduct my elections in Ogun. I don’t see how anyone would begin to accuse Adams Oshiomhole as favouring me in place of some other persons.”
