Okpebholo, PDP differ on probe of Obaseki $10m spent on Observer newspaper

Gov. Monday Okpebholo of Edo has announced plans to probe the $10 million reportedly spent on the state owned newspaper, The Nigerian Observer, by former Governor Godwin Obaseki.

Okpebholo made the announcement during an unscheduled visit to the Observer premises with top officials of his administration to inspect the facilities on Tuesday in Benin City.

Okpebholo noted that the once-vibrant newspaper was shut down by Obaseki for supposed renovations, adding that the company’s condition had worsened instead of meeting the goal of competing with other national dailies.

Okpebholo, frustrated by his inability to access the premises, promised to return for a more thorough inspection of the buildings, and the machines allegedly purchased with taxpayers’ money.

The governor expressed concerns about the $10 million claimed to have been spent by Obaseki to revive the newspaper, with the premises locked and devoid of staff.

“I visited The Observer newspaper company to verify the claims of $10 million spent by Obaseki to revamp the media outfit.

“The premises were locked, and no machines or staff were visible. If there had been equipment, people would have been working there, especially given the resources spent,” Okpebholo said.

The governor emphasised that Edo citizens deserved answers regarding the misuse of their funds, adding that his visit was part of his effort to ensure accountability.

However, Chris Nehikhare, the PDP publicity secretary, in a statement,  urged the governor to ask his Information Commissioner, Chief Press Secretary, and others about the machines they took custody of on February 7 at The Observer premises.

Nehikhare expressed amazement at the governor’s statement, where he claimed he wanted to probe the previous administration’s efforts concerning The Nigerian Observer.

“The most laughable part is Okpebholo’s claims that he could not access his own property during a visit to the Observer.

“On November 18, 2024, days after assuming office, Okpebholo ordered the sack of all civil servants at the Nigerian Observer,” Nehikhare said.

Nehikhare referred to the Daily Post’s article on Nov. 19, 2024, titled, “Edo: Gov Okpebholo sacks Observer workers,” for reference and further information.

“We refer the public to The Sun Nigeria’s story, “EDSG takes over full control of Observer Printing Press,” published on Feb. 7, 2025, for further details,” Nehikhare said.

Nehikhare also referred the public to a video of the equipment tour aired by TMC TV, showing the machines at the Observer premises for clarification.

He urged the Information Commissioner, Press Secretary, Observer’s General Manager, and Permanent Secretary to brief the governor about the equipment they took custody of during the inspection.

According to Nehikhare, it is absurd to order the sack of employees in November 2024 while still expecting them to be present during his visit.

  • Obaseki hammers Okpebholo for shutting down the state’s e-governance platform

Obaseki hammers Okpebholo for shutting down the state’s e-governance platform

The immediate past Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, has slammed his successor, Monday Okpebholo, for shutting down the state’s e-governance platform.

Reports have it that Okpebholo had said that the entire e-governance platform is being run and operated from the backend by unknown non-state actors, and no one within the public service of the state has administrative control of the platform.

In a statement through the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Ikhilor, the governor ordered an immediate review of the platform.

Okpebholo added that all officials and staff of Ministries, Departments and Agencies are to continue to work on the platform pending the outcome of the ongoing review.

However, Obaseki, in a statement on Tuesday by his spokesman, Crusoe Osagie, stated that Okpebholo’s excuses for shutting down the platform are shameful and regressive.

The former governor said Okpebholo’s decision was a sign of a clueless government and an insult to the sensibilities of Edo workers and the people of the state.

Obaseki stated that the platform is operated by the Edo ICT Agency, a parastatal under the Edo State Ministry of Digital Economy, with the support of expert consultants.

The statement read, “We read with surprise and deep disappointment the utterly ridiculous statement by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Umar Musa Ikhilor, where he laboriously attempted to justify the illogical shutdown of the Edo e-governance platform and the decision to revert the state’s civil service operations back to paper files to run the government.

“This irrational decision is not only shameful and regressive but also an insult to the sensibilities of Edo workers and the people of the state. It further exposes the government’s cluelessness and lack of the depth and knowledge required for effective governance and administration in the 21st century.

“To be clear, the platform is operated by the Edo ICT Agency, a parastatal under the Edo State Ministry of Digital Economy, with the support of expert consultants, ensuring a digital and efficient system for government processes and operations.

“However, the unprepared and clueless government of Senator Monday Okpebholo, having come into power through one of the most flawed electoral processes in the country, has since sacked most of the senior civil servants in the agency. As a result, the government is now hamstrung and unable to run the e-gov system effectively.

“Had the government not embarked on the ongoing indiscriminate sack of civil and public servants in the state, the officials and workers responsible for this system would have been available to explain and train them on the process and functionality of the digital system. But what else can we expect from a governor who came to power through the backdoor? He is unprepared for office, in short supply of ideas, and lacks a clear vision to drive the development and progress of the state.”

Obaseki also refuted allegations by the Okpebholo government that there is no institutional memory, saying that all government memory and data are stored in the state-owned Data Centre.

It added, “We also want to clarify that the allegations by the government that there is no institutional memory are completely false. All government memory and data are stored in the state-owned Data Centre, which was built and commissioned by the immediate past administration of His Excellency, Mr. Godwin Obaseki. The Data Centre is situated within the Government House compound, from where the Secretary to the State Government is dishing out his jaundiced statements, filled with lies and half-truths.

“For eight years, the immediate past governor, HE Godwin Obaseki, focused on nuanced policies and programmes to lay a solid foundation for the State, placing it on the path of progress and prosperity.

“We advise Okpebholo to follow this path if he doesn’t have a vision or plan for the state rather than erode the progress that has been made over these past few years with his illogical and poorly thought-out decisions and policies.”

  • Hours to handover , Obaseki declared missing as Okpebholo calls for Gov’s mental evaluation

Hours to handover , Obaseki declared missing as Okpebholo calls for Gov’s mental evaluation

Edo State Governor-Elect, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has called on the out-going Governor of the State, Godwin Obaseki, to seek immediate attention of a psychiatrist, following his recent utterances and public displays.

In a statement made available to newsmen on Sunday and signed by Godspower Inegbe, Okpebholo said Edo people are worried by Obaseki’s reckless statements and urged him to evaluate his state of mind.

The Governor-Elect in the statement raised the alarm regarding the whereabouts of Obaseki, who on Friday reportedly fled Benin City, the Edo State capital, using a disguised bus.

The statement revealed that Obaseki chased out everyone from the Government House on Friday before escaping to a yet-to-be known location more than 72 hours before his official departure from office.

The statement further noted that Obaseki is making the false claims to shift attention away from his sinister plans to leave the country through the land borders.

“As of Friday, 8th of November, the whereabout of Obaseki is unknown. He has chased everyone out of Edo State Government House. He has abandoned governance in the State, and he is on the run.

“He has escaped through the road out of Benin. He did not pass through the airport. If he is as popular as he claims, why did he not use the airport to escape? Instead, he hired a bus and disguised while escaping from Edo State.

“Obaseki is trying to push out these narratives in order to distract the public. His antics will not work. We know his plans, and we will continue to expose his shenanigans to Edo people,” the statement read.

Obaseki, on Saturday, claimed that Senator Okpebholo did not invite him to his inauguration, slated for next Tuesday. He also claimed without proof that the Governor-Elect has a stolen mandate.

“Out-going Governor Godwin Obaseki needs serious and urgent psychiatric attention to evaluate his state of mind. His recent utterances and public displays should get Edo sons and daughters worried.

“In his latest diatribe, Obaseki, who has supervised one of the biggest financial heist and misappropriated resources of Edo state, is again engaging in his usual beer parlour talks.

“According to the unpopular outgoing governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo stole the mandate freely given to him by Edo people. In his usual myopic mind, he wants to change the narratives and set a dangerous precedence,” Okpebholo noted in a statement.

The Governor-Elect said he won the elections convincingly and added that the tribunal will soon validate his claims. He said Obaseki would not get away with the reckless claims.

“Obaseki will not get away with this misrepresentation. Senator Monday Okpebholo, the Governor-Elect of Edo State, won the 21st September governorship election in Edo State.

Obaseki is still licking his wound of defeat and is yet to accept the reality. Edo people, through the ballot, rejected the planned continuation of Obaseki’s satanic government through his glorified stooge, Asue Ighodalo,” he mocked Obaseki

Okpebholo said Obaseki is trying to influence the outcome of the ongoing case at the tribunal by making false claims. He said the attempt will fail like a pack of cards.

He said: “The Peoples Democratic Party is already challenging the outcome of the election in court. We are therefore worried that Obaseki is in a hurry to pre-empt the outcome of the tribunal by repeatedly making false claims.

“Unfortunately for Obaseki, his baseless claims will not stand. The Peoples Democratic Party and its candidate, Ighodalo, have no case against Senator Okpebholo. The tribunal will soon confirm that.”

He warned Obaseki to desist from making false claims and reminded him of severe consequences that may follow if he does not stop.

Senator Okpebholo reminded Obaseki that he will soon lose his immunity and will therefore be forced to face the full wrath of the law if he does not retrace his steps.

“Although Senator Okpebholo is a man of peace, we will not sit back and allow him to keep misrepresenting the true outcome of what happened on the 21st of September.

“Obaseki will soon lose his immunity and if he continues to make his baseless claims, he will face the full wrath of the law very soon and he will prove his unfounded allegations when he is dragged to court,” Okpebholo warned in the statement.

Reacting to another claim by Obaseki that he was not invited to attend the inauguration slated for next Tuesday, Okpebholo described it as laughable, absurd, and questionable.

He said that since he won the election, Obaseki has employed every means to frustrate a peaceful transfer of power. The Governor-elect noted that Obaseki has not extended any invitation to him for a meeting or a tour of the Government House.

The statement read: “Again, Obaseki also claimed that Senator Okpebholo did not invite him to the inauguration, slated for next Tuesday. This is laughable, absurd, and questionable. Since Senator Okpebholo was declared winner, Obaseki has employed every means to frustrate a peaceful transfer of power.

“As a sitting Governor, Obaseki should tell Edo people and Nigerians if he has ever invited the Governor-Elect, Senator Okpebholo to Government House for a meeting or a tour as a responsible man. Has Obaseki called Senator Okpebholo to congratulate him since he won the election?

“Obaseki should cover his face in shame, account for the billions he has misappropriated, and apologise to Edo people for under-developing the State in the last eight years.

‘We urge Edo people to disregard Obaseki’s reckless statements and support the incoming administration of Senator Okpebholo to remedy the many wrongs of this government.”

Shaibu offers N1m bounty for information on looting in Edo as Obaseki asks Okpebholo to produce evidence

Reinstated deputy governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu, has offered N1million bounty to anyone who has information concerning alleged looting of government property as the administration winds down.

This is just as the outgoing governor of the state, Godwin Obaseki has demanded for a water proof evidence from the incoming Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo.

Shaibu in a press briefing in Benin City on Friday said he has evidence to back the alleged looting in some quarters and last minute borrowing from financial institutions.

He also called on the Economic Financial Crimes Commission, the Department of State Services and other relevant agencies to look into the alleged misappropriation of funds meant for projects in the ministry of roads and bridges, ongoing Radisson Hotel project and last minute appointments by the outgoing administration.

He said, “I have received disturbing reports of banks and other financial institutions, granting last-minute loans to Governor Godwin Obaseki. This is alarming, and not in good faith. Against that backdrop, I am issuing a strong warning to banks and financial institutions not to grant any loans or issue financial instruments to Governor Obaseki or any official of the state government in whatever capacity or office.

Also, information at my disposal shows there are last-minute plans to siphon state’s fund using NGOs as a decoy, under the guise of supporting such organisations’ projects and activities.

These actions undermine our state’s financial stability and potential mortgage of the future of Edo State. I dissociate myself and my office from any such dealings.”

He said there were reports of indiscriminate and clandestine appointments into the civil and public service with outrageous grade levels.

He added, “I condemn these actions and dissociate myself and my office from any involvement. These appointments have not only undermined the civil service’s integrity but also perpetuated a culture of cronyism.”

He also alleged that consultants were being appointed and their date of engagement being backdated, allegedly to justify outrageous expenditures.

“As the Deputy Governor of Edo State, I am inviting the EFCC and ICPC to look into the massive contract fraud that has taken place under the supervision of Ferguson Enabulele and the entire government.

“Investigation is equally ongoing to unravel the alleged involvement of some engineers in the ministry, who agreed to assist the permanent secretary to keep such funds with their registered company accounts with banks and later convert such to US dollars.”

A government official who pleaded anonymity said that the state government would not dignify the Shaibu with a response, noting that if he was important in the All Progressives Congress, he would have been included in Okpebholo’s transition committee.

  • HILARY OTSU: A house divided against itself – How Obaseki lost Edo

HILARY OTSU: A house divided against itself – How Obaseki lost Edo

The defeat of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in last Saturday’s governorship election Edo State was largely predicted on the internal rancour that bedevilled the state chapter of the party.

Senator Monday Okpebholo, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC defeated the PDP’s candidate, Asue Ighodalo by 291,667 votes to 247,274 votes. The Labour Party’s candidate, Olumide Akpata came a distant third with 22,763 votes.

For a state that had been ruled by the PDP the election was seen as a referendum on the outgoing administration headed by Governor Godwin Obaseki. The referendum boiled down to delivery of good governance and management of human relationships.

In both respects, the PDP entered the election on a negative.

The election was held on a rainy day that clearly demonstrated the government’s failure in road infrastructure.

It would be recalled that election materials were late to arrive because of the rains which prevented vehicular movements largely on account of the bad roads that have emerged in many areas of the state.

So, for many voters the visible impact of bad roads was a reflection of their bad review of the Obaseki years in governance. Without reference to the promises of the PDP candidate, it was the suggestion of many that so long as the PDP candidate was riding on the support of Obaseki that he would continue on that trajectory.

However, even more than the visible impact of road infrastructure was the poor management of human relations which made Obaseki to be a loner on election day.

That figure of political loneliness was captured during the collation of election results at the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC headquarters in Benin when the governor drove alone to complain about the alleged manipulation of figures.

Commenting on the development, Obaseki’s deputy, Mr Philip Shaibu, who is estranged from him said that the governor need not have done that were it not for his loneliness.
“We were the ones who used to do all such things for him. He need not have gone to INEC office by himself,” Shaibu said on Arise Television on Tuesday.

That claim of loneliness was largely reflected in the way the governor reportedly pushed aside those who backed him to power who crystallised into the Legacy Group.

After he was pushed away from the APC in June 2020, Obaseki was welcomed into the PDP with mixed feelings. Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama who was on a roller-coaster to win the PDP governorship ticket was made promises including a senate ticket which never came to pass.

The party which had Chief Dan Orbih, the national vice-chairman, South South as leader gave him every support. Orbih became campaign manager and mounted the rostrum every where in Edo State to pave victory for Obaseki in 2020.

Following the victory, Obaseki took more than 11 months to constitute his cabinet. In that time he ran the government with the two former APC members he brought with him to government; his deputy, Shaibu and the Secretary to the State Government, Osarodion Ogie.

Mutters began to be expressed by the PDP members who thought that having sacrificed the two top positions in government that Obaseki will reward them. But no. The governor’s response was that the PDP should dissolve its structures across the state so that he would appoint those who came with him from the APC into the PDP structures.

The PDP members firmly rebuffed him. That was the beginning of the crisis. Many PDP members told him to go with his government and that they would hold their party.

Dr Tony Aziegbemi, the chairman of the state chapter of the party was at one time suspended and recalled as the crisis grew.

As the crisis grew, Obaseki summoned some party leaders who were differential to him and senior government officials on October 11, 2021 where he announced the suspension of Orbih, Ogbeide-Ihama among others he defined as trouble makers.

“I will not leave PDP. I am the leader of PDP and by the grace of God I will lead PDP well. Any body that doesn’t want me to lead or want to accept my leadership will leave PDP for me,” he said on that day.

That was seen as the last straw on the camel’s back by many. It was following this that Orbih who had held the party for more than a 15 years before Obaseki began separating with him.

Orbih started coalescing the old PDP members and eventually became known as the Legacy PDP. With the power of incumbency, the group despite having the majority of supporters in the state executive lost the recognition of the national leadership of the party who ceded party tickets in the 2023 election to the candidates’ slate presented by Obaseki.

The Legacy Group kept away from the 2023 General Election, and where not, supported others against their party leading to the humiliating defeat of the PDP in the presidential and National Assembly elections.

It was the first time that the PDP would lose the National Assembly elections in Edo State as the party did not win a single Senate seat. Indeed, even with Adams Oshiomhole as governor the PDP was able to show muscle in national assembly elections getting the majority of seats.

The National Assembly election results in 2023 forced Obaseki on a save my life crusade ahead of the State House of Assembly election. His motif was to insinuate that a defeat for the PDP would lead to the emergence of an APC House that would be dominated by Adams Oshiomhole.

It was a trick that worked somewhat. The PDP eventually won control of the House of Assembly in March 2023. That House of Assembly victory perhaps gave Obaseki the confidence that he could still muscle his way through in the governorship election. Though he tried to make peace with Orbih but the effort was not seen as convincing enough.

For example for the first time Obaseki showed up at the traditional Christmas party hosted by Orbih at his Ogbona country home to identify with him last December. But many saw it as a move by the governor to buy over those he had consistently derided as dead woods.

When Asue Ighodalo emerged as candidate, the governor against the advice of Legacy PDP members and others insisted on foisting Osarodion Ogie, seen as one of his surrogates who came with him from the APC as the running mate.

It meant that for two election circles that the original PDP would not have any of its own on the ticket of the party.

Obaseki’s fate was worsened by the way he managed the PDP primary which led almost all of the 10 other aspirants who vied for the ticket with Ighodalo to take position against their party. Though Orbih was not visible in the public face of marshalling the opposition, he nevertheless was believed to have been the fulcrum around with the opposition by the PDP Legacy members vented out their frustration.

Obaseki it would be said helped to bring diverse foes together to stop what many of them saw as a third term for himself. The result was the bruising defeat of the PDP which on election day did not have the ground commanders to protect the votes the party claimed to have polled.

Edo poll: Civil servants’ll be first victim if opposition wins – Obaseki

Gov. Godwin Obaseki of Edo has said that civil servants in Edo would face negative consequences if the opposition wins the upcoming governorship election in the state.

Obaseki said this during a thank-you meeting with public servants on Tuesday in Benin.

Obaseki highlighted the progress made in technology-driven operations within the state’s civil service and urged voters to make the right decision in the election to maintain this momentum.

He warned that electing leaders who lacked experience and ideas could be disastrous for the state.

He praised Ighodalo as a capable leader, who would continue his work and urged voters to defend their votes to ensure Edo’s continued development.

“I came to appreciate and thank you from the bottom of my heart. I won’t have achieved what we achieved without you.

“I am finishing the first part but the journey must not stop. It must continue, the engine of development must continue to run

“The rate at which we need to run will be very high when we make the right decision. We can’t afford any mistakes come Saturday.

“Those who want to take over power by all means are uneducated and have never worked in any better place.

“My message to you is that, that is a risk we can’t afford. It is not about Obaseki but democracy and development.

“The risk is about allowing people without ideas of what to do to lead. People who can’t even articulate their ideas, people who can’t read a balance sheet.

“Edo will face a major risk if you miss it on Saturday, ” he said.

According to Obaseki, any mistake you make will affect you first before others. You will be the first victim.

On his part, Asue Ighodalo, said that Obaseki had done tremendously well and the transformation in the civil service was second to none.

“Edo State public and civil service is number one in Nigeria. Obaseki has done well and I will continue from where Obaseki would stop.

“You all here will be my priority, function together and continue to make Edo state a progressive state and this shall be our focus, “he added.

Ighodalo charged the people to come out enmasse to vote and defend their votes.

Mr Anthony Okungbowa, the State Head of Service (HoS), thanked the governor for the tremendous reform he had made in the civil service and prayed to God to bless him.

He also thanked the governorship candidate for finding time to come to address them.

Governor Obaseki, thereafter, inaugurated the newly installed Third East/ Sakponba Road Junction traffic light.

BREAKING! Again, Shaibu floors Obaseki as Appeal Court confirms he’s authentic Deputy Gov

The Court of Appeal, Abuja Division, has dismissed an appeal by the Edo State House of Assembly, affirming that Comrade Philip Shaibu remains the Deputy Governor of Edo State.

The Appeal Court upheld the earlier decision of the Federal High Court in Abuja, which voided Shaibu’s impeachment and ordered his immediate reinstatement to office.

The court warned that any individual aside from Shaibu parading themselves as Deputy Governor would face legal consequences.

This development comes after the Edo State House of Assembly impeached Shaibu on April 8, citing reasons such as perjury and leaking government secrets.

However, Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court ruled that the impeachment procedure breached due process and ordered Shaibu’s reinstatement.

The court also set aside the appointment of Omobayo Godwins as the new Deputy Governor, replacing Shaibu. The Inspector General of Police was directed to provide Shaibu with necessary security to enable him to resume office and perform his functions as Deputy Governor until the end of his tenure.

He said that the swearing-in of the appointee would be held at a date to be announced.

  • How my fight started with Obaseki – Philip Shaibu

How my fight started with Obaseki – Philip Shaibu

The reinstated Deputy Governor of Edo, Philip Shaibu has revealed the cause for the frosty relationship with his principal, Governor Godwin Obaseki, saying it was all political.

Shaibu, who described Obaseki as a dictator, said he became more resolved to pursue his governorship ambition after the governor threatened he would destroy him if he did not back down.

Shaibu, who has now defected from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress, spoke on Wednesday when he paid a courtesy visit to the APC National Working Committee in Abuja.

He said, “The truth is that the issues were all political. I declared to contest for the governor of Edo State. That is where the fight started.”

Looking pensive, the deputy governor told journalists that he did everything humanly possible to pacify his boss to no avail.

“He (Obaseki) said, ‘You cannot contest because I have my plans’. The next thing was that he would destroy me if I continued. For me, no man can destroy the plan of God. As an activist, that day I made up my mind that I was going to contest. As of the time our conversation was on, I was still consulting. I went into the race and I won it because I played high-powered politics. They are not politicians. They rode on our back to where they are. In the politics I played, I actually had 400 out of the 572 delegates.

“A week to the primary, I lost some and had 381. So I brought those 381 on the day of the primary but they were refused accreditation. They took the accreditation tags and gave to their appointees to go and do Aso Ebi reception at the stadium they call primaries. Now, the court has ruled that the delegates I had were the authentic delegates and the ones they brought were fake. So as it is, they have boxed themselves into a corner where I don’t want to go because it is a legal issue.

“We are in court and by the grace of God, I had already been vindicated by two judgments. What is critical is that I want to prove internal democracy must be respected and allowed to play. You can lobby, you can talk to people and people will understand. If the governor had shown leadership, maybe I wouldn’t have contested because I am not a desperate person. My ambition is not inordinate. I have an ambition to fix the state. If somebody else can agree that we collectively fix it, I will follow. But the governor wanted to behave like a military dictator. And for me, we fought. I have captained people that have fought for this democracy. I started from the youth wing. I am sure I am one of the top people you will mention for this democracy that we now have. And for me, I cannot watch this democracy be derailed and allow dictatorship to take control.”

He described as false the claim that he went away with 22 official vehicles after his impeachment.

According to the accountant-turned-politician, the governor bought only one official car for his convoy in the seven and a half years of their administration.

Shaibu said, “The easiest way to have a disagreement is money. Even my official entitlements, most of them I didn’t even apply for them. That is, anything that has to do with going to meet the governor to apply for anything, including my personal or official entitlement. I confined myself within the official salary that came to me. “Recently, I saw an advert that I should return 22 vehicles. Only one vehicle in the seven and a half years that the governor bought for my convoy. Only one. Every vehicle you see in my convoy, some of them, especially the Landcruiser I used for three years with a coat of arm and flag as staff car, the Prado I used as back-up for three years, was the same that I used as the Majority Leader of the Edo State House of Assembly.

“It was the third year of his first term that the governor eventually bought a Landcruiser jeep. Even when they were bringing the jeep, it had an accident on the way. We had to change the wheels and it took two weeks for us to fix it. I never made it an issue, because for me, anything that will bring trouble I was able to manage it. I am happy that I gave everything and I was never found wanting. I was not impeached because I stole money, I was not corrupt, or because of incompetence.

“Today, the court has also told us that what they said was gross misconduct was never a misconduct. They said I gave out government secrets. I have worked diligently with this man. I was asked to perform his duty as acting governor and I was able to organise the security system. I have not done anything wrong to warrant impeachment.”

When asked if he could ever forgive Obaseki for treating him as an outcast, Shaibu hesitated before nodding.

He said, “The only person that is perfect is the Almighty God. None of us created by God is perfect. One of the greatest commandments in the world is ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ If all of us can actually take to that commandment, there will be peace in the world. But I have just discovered that there is no perfect relationship with what has happened between the governor and me.

“From my own end, I gave everything. I gave all to have him succeed. Because, for me, it is about the state and the state in everything. So, I gave everything even my official earnings. I forfeited lots of my official entitlement. Why? It is because I didn’t want any trouble or disagreement.”

Commissioner’s sack, an admittance of failure – APC slams Obaseki

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo has described the sack of the state Commissioner for Health, Dr Samuel Alli, as an admission of failure by Gov. Godwin Obaseki.

The state governor disengaged Alli on Monday, saying the ex-commissioner was a barrier to his government finishing strong.

However, in a statement signed by Comrade Orobosa Omo-Ojo, Director of Publicity Committee, Edo APC Governorship Campaign Council, the party said the sack did not come as a surprise.

The APC frowned at the scapegoating of Alli, alleged to have been reduced to a mere supervisor in the state Ministry of Health.

It advised Obaseki to stop looking for more scapegoats, just as he was accused of preferring to use consultants to drain the state’s resources.

“The government statement claiming that Gov. Obaseki is resolute on his finishing strong objective and that he will remove any obstacles that may hinder optimal service delivery to the people in the remaining four months of his administration is deceitful and deceptive,” said APC.

“Truth is, it’s late for Obaseki and the PDP to save themselves from the shaming that awaits them as a result of their complete failure to attend to the basic needs of Edo people,” it said.

The party mentioned some of the failed basic needs as healthcare, education, food security, infrastructure, and the general well-being of the people.

“There is no magic that Obaseki can use to complete the several uncompleted projects that now look like abandoned projects,” said APC.
