Edo: PDP told to suspend Governor Obaseki

The disagreement between the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party in Edo state has continued to generate reactions with the APC describing the call for Philip Shaibu’s resignation from the PDP as very irritating and unheard-off.

Earlier TheNewsGuru.com reports that Shaibu, a former deputy governor of the state who was impeached on April 8 but still remains a member of the PDP, on Sunday in Benin, described the PDP candidate for the September 21 governorship election, Asue Ighodalo, as an outsider, who should be rejected by the electorate.

Shaibu contested the primary and lost to Ighodalo  but suddenly pitched his tent with the APC candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, whom he described as a homeboy needed to govern Edo State.

Reacting to Shaibu’s support for APC’s Okpebholo, , the Deputy Director of the PDP in charge of Media, Rev. Olu Martin, has now called for the resignation of Shaibu from the party.

“It is obvious that PDP is yet to understand the hurricane that has happened in their party. Virtually everyone with political relevance has left and those still in the party are only lying in wait as undertakers to bury the party.

“Rather than ask Shaibu to resign, the PDP should suspend their outgoing governor, Obaseki, for leading them to political obscurity in Edo State.

“Comrade Philip Shaibu is an Iroko, a true definition of homeboy and a political giant in the state, like the APC candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo.

“The APC wishes to give free advice to the dead PDP that it should concentrate its energy on how to tell Edo people what Asue Ighodalo and his running mate intend to bring on board after both have served the state for 28 years without any major development.

“The only sane thing left for the PDP is to join Obaseki and Ighodalo on a pleading tour of the state and beg for forgiveness, especially after last week’s confession by the state government that question papers for basic examination in the state was leaked to public schoolteachers in the state, which eventually ended up with maize sellers.

“We are by this statement demanding that Edo State Government should immediately set up an independent panel of inquiry to investigate the circumstances that led to the series of examination questions leakages that have trailed the so-called Edo Best education programme since 2020.”

  • Obaseki begins payment of N70,000 minimum wage in Edo

Obaseki begins payment of N70,000 minimum wage in Edo

The  Edo Government said it has begun payment of the N70,000 new minimum wage to workers in the state in fulfillment of the promise to increase the minimum wage from May, 2024.

It would be recalled that Gov.  Godwin Obaseki had during the inauguration of the Labour House in Benin, announced the increment in workers’ salaries in the state from N40,000 to N70,000.

Obaseki said the increment was to reflect the current economic realities of the country and cushion  the impacts of the harsh economy on the people of the state.

In a statement, the State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, said the payment of the N70,000 minimum wage to  workers would  further demonstrate  the commitment of the  Obaseki-led administration to the welfare of Edo workers.

“The Edo government has paid the May salaries of workers in the state, reflecting the implementation of the N70,000 new minimum wage.

“This is in fulfillment of the promise made by Obaseki.

“It is also in furtherance of the commitment of the state government to meet its statutory obligations even before the end of the month,” he said.

The commissioner urged the workers to be committed to their duties to reciprocate the gesture by the state government.

Suspended Enigie: ‘It’s abominable for individual to interfere in age-long Customary Arbitration’ – BTC Cautions Obaseki

Benin Traditional Council (BTC) has cautioned Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State to stir clear on his acclaimed move to resolve the misunderstanding between Oba of Benin and some suspended enigie (dukes).

Recall that some enigie had dragged the Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II and the state government to court over their suspension.

The Enigie argument is that the Oba does not have the power to suspend them without the consent of the state executive council and Governor Obaseki.

Obaseki, in one of visits to one of the suspended enigie in the crisis, Professor Gregory Akenzua, said he would visit the Iyase (Prime Minister) of Benin to initiate the reconciliation process.

But the BTC in a strong-worded statement dated May 22, 2024, said it was an abomination for any individual to seek to interfere with the age-long and well-established process of customary arbitration of the kingdom which they expected those involved to explore.

The statement was signed by prominent Benin chiefs including: Osuma of Benin, Chief Norense Ozigbo-Esere; Oliha of Benin, Chief Edionwe Oliha; Aiwerioghene of Benin, Chief Henry Osato Bazuaye; Uwangue of Benin, Chief Ekhoerovbiye Oviasogie and Eribo of Benin, Chief Ada Igbinovia.

Others are Esere of Benin, Chief Stanley Obamwonyi; Obazelu of Benin, Chief Osaro Idah; Ine of Benin, Chief Okuonghae Edomwandagbon and Obahiagbon of Benin, Chief David Aibiokun Ehondor.

The statement reads: “Our attention has been drawn to the reported plan by the Governor of Edo State, His Excellency,Mr. Godwin Obaseki, to initiate dispute resolution of the suit filed by two suspended Enigie against His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo,Oba of Benin.

“Our attention has also been drawn to a Press Statement credited to the Honourable Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Edo State, Mr. Chris Nehikhare in which he claims that the suit filed by the Enigie is a family dispute within the Benin Royal Family

“We wish to state for the avoidance of doubt that the Benin Traditional Institution has a well-established and fully functional process of customary arbitration under the authority of His Royal Majesty, The Oba of Benin. This process of customary arbitration is well-known to all Benin traditional chiefs, including the suspended Enigie. Any traditional chief who has any genuine cause to be aggrieved is at liberty to explore this customary arbitration process. It is therefore an abomination for any individual to seek to interfere with this age-long and well-established process of customary arbitration.

“We also wish to emphasize that His Royal Majesty, The Oba of Benin reigns over the Benin Kingdom as the spiritual and royal father of the Benin people irrespective of family status, age and office.

“Consequently, it is an affront for anyone to suggest that His Royal Majesty, The Oba of Benin is in dispute with those over whom he reigns, including members of the Royal Family.

“We admonish members of the general public to be wary of the abominable efforts to undermine the Benin Traditional Institution through deliberate acts and utterances which are calculated to create confusion.

“We appeal to members of the general public to remain law-abiding, and pray for peace to continue to reign in the Benin Kingdom.”

  • Edo govt. recruited 5,000 workers in 7 years – Obaseki

Edo govt. recruited 5,000 workers in 7 years – Obaseki

Gov. Godwin Obaseki of Edo, on Wednesday, said his administration had employed more than 5,000 new workers into the state civil service in the last seven years.

Obaseki disclosed this at the 2024 May Day celebrations at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin.

He said that the 5,000 workers were recruited based on merit, and not on favouritism.

“Now, you don’t need to know anybody to get government work in Edo,” he said.

Obaseki said that he decided to increase the minimum wage from N40,000 to N70,000 because workers’ welfare remained paramount to his administration.

“But, should the Federal Government decide on a higher minimum wage and decide to make the funds available to states from the savings which they have made from  removal of fuel subsidy, Edo will adjust its minimum wage to that,” he said.

The governor said he was leaving the state workforce better than he met it, noting that the John Odigie Oyegun Public Service Academy had trained over 10,000 workers.

“From a state which ranked the highest in human trafficking and irregular migration seven years ago, we have become a state with the lowest number of multidimensional poor.

“We have one of the lowest infant and maternal mortality rate and lowest number of out-of-school children in Nigeria,” he said.

Earlier, the Chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in the state, Odion Olaye, said that the governor was approached to approve the N70,000 minimum wage for workers.

Olaye, however, urged Obaseki to fullfil his promise of paying the wage award he had promised the state workers to cushion the effect of  fuel subsidy removal by the federal government.

He also appealed to the governor to prevail on the local government councils in the state to pay the salary arrears owed from 2017 to 2023, with the improved allocation.

  • Obaseki on Shaibu’s ambition: I could not take that risk on Edo people

Obaseki on Shaibu’s ambition: I could not take that risk on Edo people

Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki has given his reasons for not supporting his former deputy, Philip Shaibu, to succeed him.

Obaseki stated that he could not take the risk of backing Shaibu to become the next governor, citing political permutations in the state that were against Shaibu.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, the governor addressed the fallout between him and his former Deputy in the build-up to the Peoples Democratic Party primary election.

Speaking on the matter, Obaseki stated, “For me, I did not understand where the ambition was coming from because it was clear that the odds were not in his favor in terms of succeeding me, and I made it very clear.”

“So, I could not take any risk on his ambition because I have to protect the Edo people. So, I could not take that risk on Edo people.”

Shaibu, in response to his impeachment, described the development as an attack on the country’s democracy.

In a social media video post, Shaibu stated, “This is not just an attack on me as an individual but on the democracy that we hold dear.”

“It is a dangerous descent into dictatorship and a threat to the foundation of our democracy. Let it be clear that this impeachment was hatched because of my ambition to contest the Edo State 2024 governorship election under the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. An ambition that is a legal right to all citizens of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

  • Onaiwu urges Obaseki, aides to stop blackmailing PDP governorship aspirants in Edo

Onaiwu urges Obaseki, aides to stop blackmailing PDP governorship aspirants in Edo

Earl Osaro Onaiwu, a frontline PDP governorship aspirant in Edo has urged Gov. Godwin Obaseki to stop blackmailing the “eight loyal and faithful” party members participating in seeking to become governor of the state.

Onaiwu who made the call in a statement he issued on Tuesday, was speaking on behalf of the eight governorship aspirants who have stood against what they termed “the flawed state delegate election of the party held at the weekend”.

He said Obaseki’s postulation that the eight aspirants were being sponsored by the G5 Governors was “baseless and a blackmail”.

According to him, the false narrative being peddled by the governor and his team is aimed at mobilising support for Alhaji Atiku Abubarkar.

He said that as a former Director-General of the PDP Governors’ Forum, he enjoyed and still enjoys a relationship with the esteemed Nigerians who have formed the G5 Governors.

“Is it not ironic that the Governor of Enugu State, Dr Peter Mbah who midwifed the flawed congress is a product of G5?” he asked.

The former director-general of the PDP governors’ forum said he played a prominent role in the presidential campaigns of Atiku Abubakar in the 36 states of the federation in both 2019 and 2023 unflinchingly.

According to him, because of that antecedent and his unwavering loyalty to the party, no-one is in a position to blackmail him.

“Obaseki and his aides were welcomed into this party by us and we cannot abandon our party for them,” Onaiwu said.

He stated that the eight of them eating the government house have been committed members of PDP long before the Obaseki joined, therefore, their loyalty to the party will remain unshakable.

He commended Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo state for his display of courage in being the first to raise concerns about the flawed and one-sided arrangements of the Edo ward Congress.

“This display of courage is laudable and shows the true character of a committed party member,” Onaiwu said in the statement.

He called on all party faithful, former PDP Senate Presidents, and former PDP Presidential aspirants to unite and speak out against the alleged injustice prevailing in the state.

He said, “It is imperative that we stand together in solidarity to ensure justice and fairness in the party’s internal democratic process.”

Nine aspirants in their letter to the acting National Chairman, Umar Illiya, and copied to the National Vice Chairman South-South of the party, Chief Dan Orbih protested the process and compositions of those to conduct the delegates election.

The petition was signed by Dep.- Gov. Philip Shaibu, Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama, Anselm Ojezua, Felix Akhabue, Amb. Martin Uhomoibhi, Hafia Hadizat Umoru, Hon. Omosede Igbinedion, Earl Osaro Onaiwu, and Barr. Arthur Esene.

  • Edo 2024: Shaibu’s talk about Obaseki’s betrayal laughable – By Ehichioya Ezomon

Edo 2024: Shaibu’s talk about Obaseki’s betrayal laughable – By Ehichioya Ezomon

It’s like the kettle calling the pot black when, the other day, Edo State Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu lamented that Governor Godwin Obaseki’s betrayed him – on account of the governor “supporting an outsider” (an unknown non-politician) for the 2024 governorship, rather than his deputy of over seven years in the governance of Edo State. Which makes one to wonder if politicians have conscience, and if it pricks them? Comrade Shaibu’s forgotten how he betrayed former Governor Adams Oshiomhole – whom he still addresses as “my father” perhaps to humour him – in order to ingratiate Mr Obaseki, who also betrayed Comrade Oshiomhole.

Let’s see snappets of Shaibu’s lamentations on January 10, 2024, during an interview on Arise Television, as reported by Vanguard: “I feel betrayed by the governor (Obaseki). I feel very betrayed. When we go to church, there are certain biblical verses that are becoming to make meaning to me.

“There is this particular verse that has been going through my mind: ‘The heart of man is desperately wicked.’ When I see what the governor is doing, the verse now makes meaning to me.”

On how he became deputy governor, and his political and financial contributions to Obaseki’s elections in 2016 and 2020, and his government,

Shaibu said: “Actually, I was persuaded, and there was no protest (from members of the All Progressives Congress (APC). I actually didn’t want to be a deputy governor. I was very comfortable in the House of Representatives.

“It took almost one month to get me to accept to be the deputy governor of Edo State. I accepted to add value to the ticket of Obaseki because Obaseki was not known, and he was not one of the politicians. They needed a young, vibrant politician that has won election before and that can add political value to the ticket.

“I added value in terms of my political structure, my finances. All the vehicles that were used to campaign in 2016 are mine. I lost about 20% of my political capital in Edo North to support Godwin Obaseki, and in supporting him even as deputy governor.

“I supported the second term bid of the governor with my finances, including how we got the ticket of the PDP. I contributed financially, both in naira and in dollars. (According to Wikipedia, Forbes & Business Insider, as of December 11, 2023, Shaibu’s net worth was $5m or approximately N2bn.) If I say betrayal, it’s an understatement. I feel very hurt and betrayed.”

So, in a manner of reciprocity, Shaibu expects Obaseki to support his aspiration to succeed him in 2024, amidst claims that Obaseki promised to back Shaibu for supporting his governorship, government, and the battle to dethrone Oshiomhole’s political hegemony, and sack him as National Chairman of the APC.

At loggerheards over the 2024 governorship – leading to Shaibu taking out court writs to preempt alleged impeachment moves against him by Obaseki and the House of Assembly, and Obaseki countering by divesting Shaibu of certain duties and powers of his office, and relocating his office outside the Government House in Benin City – Shaibu still invoked Obaseki’s name during his declaration for Governor in November 2023.

“As your deputy governor in the last seven years, I have had the privilege of working closely with our amiable governor, Godwin Obaseki, to lay a solid foundation for the progress in Edo State,” Shaibu said, apparently flattering the governor, as it’s clear by then that Obaseki’s support was for his business partner, Mr Asue Ighodalo, a Lagos-based lawyer.

Polity watchers aren’t surprised about Obaseki’s cold shoulder to Shaibu. It’s a case of “use-and-dump after Shaibu acted as the house mouse, inviting Obaseki into the house to deal decisive political blows against Oshiomhole.

Against opposition from formidable foundation members of the defunct Action Congress (AC) and Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), and the APC – including his Deputy Governor Pius Odubu – Oshiomhole single-handedly picked Obaseki as APC’s candidate, and did a yeoman’s campaign for him to win the 2016 governorship against former Secretary to Edo State Government (SSG), Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, who’d returned to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) when Oshiomhole wouldn’t look his way for the governorship.

But not long after, Obaseki broke with Oshiomhole, accusing his erstwhile soul mate and political benefactor of attempting to lord it over him and his government as a “godfather,” – which Oshiomhole really assumed in 2016 to swing the candidacy for and “crown” Obaseki as Governor of Edo State.

Yet, Obaseki – underming Oshiomhole’s benevolent spirit that broke his palm kernel for him – was to reward Oshiomhole with a series of betrayals. If Obaseki could do that to Oshiomhole, who’s Shaibu, an appendage to Obaseki already “anointed” by then Governor Oshiomhole as “Governor-in-waiting” before Shaibu’s picked as his running mate!

Shaibu should remember how the legacy members of the PDP, headed by National Vice Chairman (South-South) of the PDP, Chief Dan Orbih, kicked against his being made running mate to Obaseki in the 2020 election, and Obaseki would prevail on them that he and Shaibu were inseparable “political Siamese twins” – though Shaibu did a lot of ground-wetting, “in Naira and in dollars,” as he admitted above, to smoothen their path to retaining the governorship.

Now, the question should be: Who’s a better or worse betrayer between Shaibu and Obaseki, both of whom derived their respective position in the governance of Edo State to the political benefaction of Senator Oshiomhole?

Unless there’re contrary revelations – such as Shaibu claiming he’s pleaded with for a month to accept the post of deputy governor, without naming on whose behalf the persons pled – information in the public domain remains that Oshiomhole enabled the nomination of Obaseki and Shaibu for governor and deputy governor, and their election in 2016.

Agreed that Shaibu’s a member of the House of Representatives in 2015 – after two terms at the Edo State House of Assembly (2007-2015) – and as such, had some political pedigree and structures in Etsako Central/East/West federal constituency – one of three constituencies of Edo North senatorial district.

In that wise, Shaibu can boast he’s part of – and not entirely – the instrument the AC deployed to win Edo North in the 2007 poll that ushered Oshiomhole in as governor in 2008; the ACN in 2012 for Oshiomhole’s re-election; and the APC in the 2015 General Election, the 2016 governorship for Obaseki’s election, and the 2019 general election in the district, respectively.

But Shaibu’s bandied “political myth” in Edo North was demystified in the 2020 governorship for Obaseki’s second term in office, and in the 2023 general election – both of which the PDP lost to the APC even when Shaibu’s deputy governor on the platform of the PDP.

Meaning that all along from 2007, Shaibu held onto Oshiomhole’s coatail to win twice into Edo Assembly (2007 and 2012) and House of Representatives in 2015, and yet claims Edo North is his political stronghold. While he failed in his bid for the Edo Assembly in 2003 under the past All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), the results of the 2020 Edo governorship, and the 2023 general election show that Shaibu’s political influence is limited to Etsako West, and actually to his ward!

In closing, observers would reckon Governor Obaseki as a “better betrayer” of Senator Oshiomhole than Deputy Governor Shaibu. While Obaseki’s from Edo South, and a stranger until probably friendship, business and politics brought him and Oshiomhole together; Shaibu and Oshiomhole are of the same kindred in Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo North.

Put simply, Shaibu and Oshiomhole are kinsmen. And that’s why Shaibu’s a “worse betrayer,” whose strike against Oshiomhole – like that of Brutus against Cesaer – is the deepest cut, such that his charge of Obaseki betraying him is humourously laughable!

  • How Obaseki betrayed 2020 agreement with Hon Ogbeide-Ihama – Wike

How Obaseki betrayed 2020 agreement with Hon Ogbeide-Ihama – Wike

Minister of Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Barrister Nyesom Wike has lamented what he claims as the betrayal of Engr. Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama despite painfully sacrificing his 2020 governorship aspiration to allow Governor Godwin Obaseki win re-election.

Speaking at a New Year banquet in Port-Harcourt, Wike alleged that he along with several other governors of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP sat for 12 straight hours to persuade Ogbeide-Ihama to step down his governorship aspiration despite being the frontrunner to pick the 2020 ticket.

According to him as a condition for stepping down, promises were made to Ogbeide-Ihama and the Dan Orbih led leadership of the party among which was the nomination of four commissioners.

However, Wike lamented that none of the agreements reached between Obaseki and the PDP leadership of the party was fulfilled.

He spoke against the background of growing sentiments by party leaders for Ogbeide-Ihama to pick the 2024 ticket of the PDP.

    Wike said:

“When the heat was on in Edo State, this young man (Ogbeide-Ihama) was the frontrunner for the governorship election.

“PDP governors came, they spoke to me, we met in Government House, Port Harcourt from 6.00 pm to 6.00 am the next day.

“When you don’t want to do your own part you bring blackmail and propaganda. This young man…I told him, we should tell Orbih, withdraw, don’t run for this governorship again.

“I said don’t run. We then agreed what will be given to their group. He spent so-so amount of money, give them four commissioners, but not one was kept.

“And then the next you will see, blackmail, Wike wants to control this, Wike wants to control that, but you didn’t know Wike wants to control when you came to Government House Port Harcourt to sit from 6.00 pm to 6.00 am.”

Ogbeide-Ihama following his decision to step down for Obaseki became his campaign coordinator for Oredo Federal Constituency and his chief agent at the INEC Collation Centre in the election.

  • Obaseki frustrating me to play godfather role – Dep Gov, Shaibu cries out

Obaseki frustrating me to play godfather role – Dep Gov, Shaibu cries out

The war of wits between the Edo State governor, Godwin Obaseki and his deputy, Philip Shaibu for the soul of the state is fast becoming larger than life.

Shaibu on Wednesday accused the governor, Obaseki of betraying him by opposing his ambition to succeed him as the next governor of the state.

The deputy governor who spoke on on a national tv program early morning show, stated that Obaseki wants to play the role of a political godfather in the state, a situation they both fought and agreed should never be.

Shaibu, categorically denied any formal discussions within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) regarding a successor to Obaseki, whose term ends in 2024.

He emphasized that their shared focus remains on serving the people and dismantling the influence of “godfathers” in Edo politics.

“Anyone who said I betrayed him is not correct,” Shaibu asserted. “We all agree as a group to fight godfathers – even the Governor pledged to fight godfatherism in the state.”

This statement directly challenges recent murmurs of friction between Shaibu and Obaseki, fueled by rumors that Obaseki might not openly support Shaibu’s potential gubernatorial ambitions.

Shaibu’s interview appears to aim at dispelling these rumors and presenting a united front within the PDP on the issue of godfatherism.

However, Shaibu also used the platform to address potential criticisms around his own ambitions, stating, “It is not an Edo central or Edo north thing”, addressing concerns within the party about regional representation in the future elections, as both Shaibu and Obaseki hail from Edo central.

Furthermore, Shaibu took a swipe at his potential detractors, saying, “It is people who lack the charisma to sell themselves who are complaining.”

With tensions simmering on the issue of godfatherism and political ambitions within the PDP, the coming months promise to be filled with intriguing developments as political alignments and strategies unfold.
