  • Anambra: Gov Obiano reshuffles cabinet

Gov. Willie Obiano of Anambra has announced the movement of six commissioners from their ministries to new ones.

The cabinet reshuffle was effected after the State Executive Council meeting held in Awka on Monday.

Mr C-Don Adinuba, Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, in a statement, said six commissioners were affected.

They include Mr Obi Nwankwo, who was moved from the Ministry of Utilities to Environment, while Mr Michael Okonkwo, who was in charge of the Ministry of Environment, now takes over Ministry of Housing.

Mr Emeka Ezenwanne, formerly of Housing Ministry, is to take charge at the Ministry of Utilities while Mr Afam Mbanefo, formerly of Agriculture now to head Youths and Creative Arts Ministry.

Mr Bonaventure Enemali, formerly of Youths and Creative and Arts now proceeds to Lands, while Mr Nnamdi Onukwuba, formerly of Lands, now moves to the Ministry of Agriculture.

Adinuba said the affected commissioners had two weeks to perfect their transfers.

  • 2019: Obiano, Nwodo allegedly trade words over Ohaneze’s endorsement of Atiku

2019: Obiano, Nwodo allegedly trade words over Ohaneze’s endorsement of Atiku

Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State allegedly lashed out on phone at the President of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Dr. Nnia Nwodo on Thursday in reaction to the group’s endorsement of the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar for next month’s election.

Obiano, who was disappointed that the endorsement came on a day President Muhammadu Buhari commissioned the Mausoleum of Nigeria’s first President, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe in Onitsha, reportedly described the action of Ohanaeze and its president as idiotic.

Nwodo was said to have been shocked by the tone of the governor’s language and wondered why the matter could not be trashed out in a brotherly discussion.

According to a report by The Nation he (Nwodo) later sent a text message to the governor saying: “Your Excellency, Gov. Obiano, I was surprised to receive a call from you a few minutes ago in which you said the following words ‘Nnia, I didn’t know that you were so idiotic’

I am shocked that you can be so insolent.

I am sure that I was not so idiotic when I addressed your State Assembly asking Ndi Anambra to disregard the IPOB boycott of your election nor was I idiotic when I pleaded with the Commander in Chief to restore your security details.”

History will judge who amongst us is idiotic. If standing with the popular wish of Ndigbo makes me idiotic, I am happy to be called an idiot.”

The Anambra State Government on Friday formally dissociated itself and the people of the state from the Ohanaeze endorsement of Atiku.

It followed it up with a press conference at Agulu yesterday by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof Solo Chukwulobelu, where it branded the action of Ohanaeze as an act of sabotage.

Chukwulobelu, who stood in for the governor at the press conference, claimed yesterday that Nwodo, whose father served as Minister under Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, stabbed him in the back.

He said the endorsement of the presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and his running mate, Peter Obi, by Ohaneze Ndigbo was a slap on Zik’s face in Igboland.

His words: “We’re not part of that decision. Our position as far as the presidential election is concerned is to keep neutrality in order not to hurt anybody and the fortunes of the Igbo in national polity.

From history, the Ohanaeze had failed on four occasions where they endorsed certain presidential candidates. Shall we continue that way all the time?

That purported endorsement by the Ohanaeze was a stab in the back to the Igbo and what we are saying is that we are not part of it”

Obiano added that Anambra was mostly angered that all these happened on a day President Muhammadu Buhari was in the state to honour the late pioneer president, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, by commissioning the Zik’s Mausoleum in Onitsha

Obiano said, “We had expected Ohanaeze leaders to participate actively in the commissioning ceremony of the Zik Mausoleum, Onitsha, Anambra State, but they didn’t consider it an honour to be part of that historic occasion.

We have read bits of the communiqué purportedly issued by the Ohanaeze leadership. We regret that they do not reflect the position of the people and Government of Anambra State.”

The position of the Anambra State Government is that Ohaneze should remain a united organisation umbrella for all Ndigbo, and should not take sides with any party.”

There are major leaders in all political parties, including the three major ones in Nigeria, namely, APGA, APC and PDP.

It is deeply regrettable that the Ohanaeze leadership has chosen to go down a divisive trajectory capable of setting back Igbo unity for several years.”

  • No regrets associating with Buhari – Obiano

Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State has said that he has no regrets associating with President Muhammadu Buhari.

The governor said this in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Mr C. Don Adinuba, in Awka, the capital, on Friday.

Obiano stated that the good relationship between the Federal Government, led by the All Progressives Congress and Anambra State Government, controlled by the All Progressives Grand Alliance, had “contributed in no small measure to the unrivalled social harmony in the state which has made Anambra one of the most competitive states in the country.”

He said, “Not only do we have excellent relations with all state governments in Nigeria, we also enjoy warm relations with all political parties and their members, including candidates in the 2019 general elections.

We don’t discriminate in this state and this is visible in our administration as it is made up of members of the Peoples Democratic Party, the All Progressives Congress, and a number of non-Anambra indigenes.

We are proud that Anambra is today the most peaceful, the most cohesive and the most inclusive state throughout the country.”

He attributed the level of cooperation among federal and state agencies in the state to his strategy to make Anambra “the investment destination of first choice in Nigeria”.

I have consistently stated that investments are important for places to be peaceful and stable,” he said.

He commended intelligence and security agencies in the state for providing impressive security, especially during the last Yuletide.

Obiano said, “Frankly, I think other parts of the country should come to Anambra State and see how not only federal agencies work together but also how national and sub-national organisations cooperate fully with one another for the benefit of the people.”

Over 300 Anglican priests storm Anambra govt house, protest against Obiano

No fewer than 300 priests of the diocese of the Niger( Onitsha area) on Friday stormed the Anambra State Government House, accusing the state governor of religious bigotry.

The priests, all dressed in their robes and numbering about 300 blocked the Anambra State Government House in protest.

They vowed not to leave the scene until the governor addressed them.

It was gathered that their protest was over the alleged seizure of Bishop Crowther primary school in Onitsha by their Catholic counterpart which the Anglicans claimed belonged to them.

The Anglicans accused Obiano who is a Catholic of aiding his denomination to take over the property.

The priests who were singing different versions of their hymns carried placards of different inscriptions.

Some of the placards read, ” Willie Obiano leave our property for us,”Governor Obiano give us back our land and school”, “Religious politics in Anambra has no end”, “Bishop Crowder memorial primary school Onitsha belongs to Anglican Church”, “Bishop crowder is not government’s property”.

Governor Willie Obiano of of Anambra State, on Friday, visited the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, and his queen, Olori Silekunola Naomi to congratulate them on their wedding which held last week.

During the visit to Ife, Obiano said, “Your Majesty, I was in America, when you got married last week. As a son and longtime friend of yours, I consider it necessary to come and congratulate you and your beautiful Yeyeluwa, because you have always shown love to me, to my wife, to our government, to the people of Anambra state and Igboland in general.

“My wife and I are so proud to be associated with you as the king of this town Ile-Ife which is the spiritual home of the Yorubas.

“Kabiyesi, I pray for your long life on this sacred throne of Oduduwa, I wish you and your wife, Yeyeluwa, good health and God Almighty will bless your marriage with good children,” he added.

In his response, the Ooni said, “Your Excellency, on behalf of Yeyeluwa and I, and on behalf of the people of Ife Kingdom, I welcome you to your home, this is the throne of Oduduwa.”

“We have come a long way together, you are my longtime friend. Even when, we had nothing and when we didn’t know God had prepared exalted positions for us in this country. You have also made me so proud of you as one of the very best governors this country has ever produced.”

  • Obiano commends Buhari over suspension of Nigeria Air project

Obiano commends Buhari over suspension of Nigeria Air project

Gov. Willie Obiano of Anambra has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for suspending the establishment of Nigeria Air.
Obiano gave the commendation in a statement signed by Mr C-Don Adinuba, the state Commissioner for Information and Enlightenment, and made available to journalists on Thursday in Awka.
The governor described the action as `courageous’, noting that Buhari’s administration did not allow ego to get in the way of its suspension of the proposed carrier.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, recently announced that Buhari had approved the suspension of Nigeria Air project, but failed to disclose reason for the action.
“Buhari did not behave like most African leaders who think that policy review is a mark of weakness even when the policy is asphyxiating.
“Buhari rather behaved like what academic researchers would call an authentic leader, that is, a leader humble enough to admit policy deficiencies and even personal errors,” he said.
The governor observed that Buhari was not discouraged in making the decision by the fact that government had launched the proposed new carrier’s livery and logo with fanfare in London in July.
He said that such expenses belonged to what accountants knew as sunk or spent funds.
Obiano added that it was not advisable to proceed with a project or programme that could not work simply because government wanted to recover funds already spent on it.
“It would have been a contradiction to make an investment in the airline at a time government is divesting its 12.4 billion shares in the Nigerian Security and Minting Company.
“The failure of the proposed airline should not make the nation gloss over the need for a flag carrier.
“It should rather make us look inward and promote an airline which would be the pride of all Nigerians,” he said.
The governor urged the Federal Government to make Air Peace, which he said was Nigeria’s biggest airline, the Nigerian flag carrier.
“Air Peace has a larger fleet than the other indigenous airlines put together’’, the governor noted’’.
Obiano said that Air Peace was not just the fastest growing airline in Nigeria’s history but the most professionally managed.
“Apart from its 100 per cent safety record, its ground and in-flight services are comparable to what passengers get from such world class airlines as British Airways, Delta Airline and Ethiopian Airline,’’ he added.
The governor said contrary to the thinking of some people, a flag carrier did not have to be owned or promoted by government.
Obiano expressed confidence that at the rate Air Peace was growing, it would give global airlines in Nigeria a good run for their money earlier than most people seemed to realise.

  • ‘Obiano’ll join APC…’ says Ngige

Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, has disclosed that Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano, will join the All Progressives Congress (APC) immediately after his tenure.

The minister, who spoke to newsmen in Awka, said he was sure of the move, as he knows governor Obiano to be a pragmatist and a realist.

“When he finishes serving, he will come. I’m sure. He is a pragmatist, he is a realist. I have tried to let him know that the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) is good, but it’s a regional party. You can’t use a regional party to go and do election and fight. People have abandoned the idea of regional parties. That’s why AD, AC decided that after many years of staying at the periphery of Federal Government, they decided to coalesce with LPP; CPC and rebel faction of APGA, led by Rochas Okorocha and formed APC.

“So, regional parties are not in vogue and the governor knows. Even his predecessor, Peter Obi, when he was using APGA to canvass and do other things, it dawned on him that he cannot be playing in the region with a regional party. He can’t come to national with a regional party and that is why he unceremoniously defected. In fact, they started the defection you are seeing today. Obi is part of the early defectors.

“So, he joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), but Obiano is a progressive. Any day he will do it, we will sit with him and arrange it in such a way that the Igbo will go into a party that will reckon with them and that party is APC.”

Meanwhile, Anambra State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, C. Don Adinuba has said nothing will make Governor Obiano leave APGA.

Adinuba said both APC and PDP have failed Nigerians as they had nothing tangible to offer.

“Governor Obiano is what the great Zik of Africa would refer to as the “beautiful bride” wooed by every confident suitor. He is wanted by all the parties because of his record and brand of politics devoid of bitterness and primordial cleavages.

“But, he is not going anywhere. He is an APGA man, through and through. He is strongly backing a candidate who all Nigerians expect to win the presidential election.”

In a related development, Ngige has insisted that supporting re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari remained the best bet for the South-East to produce the Nigerian president in 2023.

  • Obiano gives July 1 deadline to“okada” riders to vacate Onitsha, Awka

Gov. Willie Obiano of Anambra has given commercial motorcycle riders popularly called “Okada riders” in Onitsha and Awka until July 1, to vacate the two cities.

The directive of the governor was contained in a statement on Wednesday in Awka.

The statement signed by Mr James Eze, the Chief Press Secretary to Gov. Obiano explained that the directive followed resolution by the Anambra Executive Council after a meeting on Tuesday .

“The ultimatum given to Okada operators in the two cities is part of the overall strategy adopted by the state government to deepen its crackdown on crime and restore sanity to Onitsha, the commercial never centre and Awka, the capital city’’, the government said.

The governor further directed residents of some make-shift structures on the banks of the River Niger stretching from Onitsha to Ogbaru to vacate the place before Aug. 1.

Authorities noted that the waterfront had been marked for demolition, saying that the demolition of the waterfront was another measure to check activities of men of the underworld in the state.

The governor said the deadline given to Okada operators and the shanty-dwellers is intended to offer them enough time to make the necessary adjustments ahead of government’s action.

He said that other resolutions by the council includes the establishment of a Committee on Environment with a mandate to clean up Anambra , clearing out garbage dumps and overflowing drainage systems.

The state government also said that the council equally resolved to demolish illegal structures that were either obstructing the way or ruining the aesthetics of the Anambra environment.

“ The committee is expected to sustain the on-going campaign to put an end to roadside trading that often leads to avoidable traffic congestion and return sanity to the roads and highways of Anambra State’’, the governor said.

The governor explained that reinforcing the hard line posture of Obiano’s administration against street-trading and erection of illegal structures across the state, the governor specifically commended the agencies behind the on-going demolition exercise in the state.

The governor said that the team should sustain the momentum until the state begins to wear a better look even as he sent a note of warning to owners of illegal structures along the famous Awka Road in Onitsha.

Council frowned at the current practice by some Awka residents who sometimes dump their refuse along the road around the Zik Avenue axis.

  • Obiano’s second mandate and Anambra success story

Obiano’s second mandate and Anambra success story

    By Carl Umegboro

GOVERNOR of Anambra State, Dr. Willie Obiano on 17 March renewed his oath of office for a second term following his landslide victory in the November 18, 2017 election.

A mammoth crowd from within and outside cheerfully witnessed the inauguration. By his laudable performance which largely, advantageously worked for him at the poll, Akpokuedike-Aguleri indeed deserved a second term. Splendidly, a cursory look in his new cabinet will convince every doubting Thomas that the state is in a safe hand and the governor is determined if nothing else, to maintain the frequency.

The distinguished figures in the list including a raconteur and media guru; C. Don Adinuba as the Commissioner of Information, who earlier served in the Presidency as a Special Assistant to then Minister of Power, Engr. Barth Nnaji, is a clear indication that the “Light of the Nation” is practically on track and automated for people-oriented governance, luxuriant growth and excellence.

In the first term, Obiano overwhelmingly consolidated, complemented the achievements of his two predecessors and took it to next level. All hitherto seemingly abandoned towns substantially received senses of belonging particularly through road rehabilitations. Thus, the choices of the people since the return of democracy have tremendously paid them. It is remarkable that Ndi-Anambra indeed have taken their destinies in their hands by untiringly ensuring that only adept leaders mount the podium as the governor of the state. It is therefore imperative to extend same approaches for the choices of their representatives at the national and House of Assembly.

From 1999, the state has experienced diverse political metamorphosis which to a large extent is providential. Dr. Chinwoke Mbadinuju’s administration was appraisingly, widely zeroed; however, a holistic evaluation may submit that Mbadinuju contributed correspondingly albeit in a different dimension. Inarguably, his tenure was the prime era of godfathers ruling by proxy. And like many other states, the anti-democratic elements invaded Anambra for control of state resources with strong backup from the Presidency then under Chief Olusegun Obasanjo.

It was completely political bullying and supremacy combats between elected government officials and Abuja clique. Funnily, Obasanjo, their arrowhead is presently spearheading a coalition for good governance in Nigeria. Irresistibly, in any contests the clique showed up interests, it was do-or-die affairs. Oddly, all elective positions across the federation were always allotted at the Presidential Villa by imposition and submitted to the Returning Officers to announce accordingly. For governors, it was either complete compliance to sinister deals particularly on security votes and sensitive positions or kangaroo impeachment and immaterial if only six signed impeachment motions against seventeen members.

Beyond jokes, to become a governor, radical aerobics were sensibly necessary for any eventualities from the presidentially-backed self-acclaimed godfathers as their hostilities came in diverse violent dimensions over noncompliance to their orders. The concert was suitable for “Things Fall Apart extra-ordinary”. Mbadinuju was the first casualty in the state with almost all appointees foisted on him.

Believably, amidst frustrations, the helpless Mbadinuju retired to faith-proclamations on the state; resorted to reprogramming the state with affirmative words and consequently, clairvoyantly changed the state’s original slogan “Home for all” to “It shall be well with Anambra State”. Unwittingly, the people both the positive-minded, indecorous and hubristic characters were daily declaring and reciting it; but unconsciously sowing seeds of progress and luxuriant growth for the state alongside his daily devotions at the government house which he personally led except when unavailable.

Eventually, due to ceaseless squabbles, Mbadinuju wasn’t returned for a second term by the clique but replaced with Dr. Chris Ngige who by mission or omission dined with the clique, hence faced legitimacy crisis after emergence as the PDP’s candidate.

In their usual overshadowing manner, Ngige has however declared a winner but immediately he was sworn-in, major crisis busted as he unpredictably, unwaveringly took full charge and sidelined the ‘godfathers’, above all, reneged on all hostile agreements over control of state machinery and treasury. Strategically, Ngige expeditiously cleared workers’ piled up arrears and energetically became workaholic; embarked on unprecedented massive road constructions despite their colossal distractions, possibly in anticipation of a rerun. It was indeed a positive drama.

Suddenly, the Christian community that hitherto rejected him reversed, embraced him over his laudable performance especially on workers’ arrears alongside mega projects. On the other hand, Mr. Peter Obi that was massively voted for as APGA’s candidate and battling for redress at the tribunal began to face apathy with open demand that Ngige with a pilfered mandate should ride on.

Along the line, the court’s gavel transferred the mantle to APGA and legitimacy crisis shifted to Obi on account of high standard Ngige set in motion. To worsen Obi’s situation, the clique conspiratorially, hurriedly impeached him and installed their man, Andy Ubah which immediately hit the brick wall. After Obi’s reinstatement by the apex court, he quintessentially espoused Ngige’s panache. However, to prevent stealing someone’s thunder, Obi had to painstakingly differentiate his projects with signposts like “this road was constructed by Peter Obi” for people to see. It critically became a battle of exploits and feats only.

The most distinctive feat of Obi that cannot be overemphasized is that despite belonging to opposition, he maneuvered his way and became the then President, Goodluck Jonathan’s Mannesmann and advantageously added value to his state. Thus, from Mbadinuju’s predictive slogan, the state progressed to the “Light of the Nation” as sensitively renamed by Obi. Inarguably, the state under Peter Obi’s leadership was a desideratum. Willie Obiano’s first term equally glowed superbly. And by extension, the light shines around her adjacent particularly Asaba, capital of Delta through real-estate developments.

Last year, Obiano remarkably approved the proposal for construction of export processing facility estimated at $150million in Ogidi. Thus, it is indeed becoming well with Anambra state. As Obiano continues to navigate the state with clear blueprints and proficient workforce, the light, perceptively, will shine brighter and brighter. Congratulations Ndi-Anambra!
