Peter Obi’s supporters under fire over birthday fundraiser

A planned birthday celebration for the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour party, has sparked controversy online, as critics question the intent behind a public fundraiser launched by his supporters.

The initiative—organized by members of the Obidient Movement—aims to commemorate Obi’s 64th birthday on July 19 with a rally and a series of charitable activities.

According to a joint statement released by leading figures in the group, including Dr. Yunusa Tanko, Nana Kazaure, and Morris Monye, the funds will be used to cover logistics, security, media outreach, volunteer kits, as well as community service projects such as drilling boreholes and visiting orphanages.

The organisers clarified that the campaign was entirely grassroots-driven, independent of Obi himself, and inspired by his consistent focus on social impact and good governance.

“Four donation accounts have been set up to receive contributions from well-wishers in Nigeria and abroad,” the statement noted. “We are committed to ensuring full transparency and accountability in how the funds are used.”

Despite assurances, the fundraiser has triggered divided opinions online. Supporters describe it as a heartfelt gesture to honor a leader they admire, while detractors accuse organisers of exploiting Obi’s name for personal or political gain—particularly at a time when many Nigerians are grappling with economic hardship.

“Peter Obi is a wealthy man,” one X (formerly Twitter) user posted. “Why does he need people raising money for his birthday? Feels more like a soft campaign move.”

Another wrote: “Stop calling this charity. Just say it’s a birthday rally. If it’s a cashout, own it.”

Others within the Obidient community raised concerns as well, demanding transparency around previous fundraising efforts and how those funds were allocated.

In response, Dr. Yunusa Tanko defended the initiative, emphasizing that it aligns with how Peter Obi traditionally celebrates his birthdays—with community service and acts of giving. “This is not something initiated by Obi,” he said. “It’s simply his supporters wanting to celebrate in a meaningful way, consistent with his values.”

Obi is yet to make any official comment at filing of this report.

Obi remains with Labour Party – Obedient Movement reacts to coalition speculations

The Obidient Movement says Mr Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) standard bearer of the 2023 general election is still with the party and has not joined any coalition.

The Director, Strategic Communication and Media, Obidient Movement, Nana Kazaure, made this known in a statement signed on Monday in Abuja while reacting to speculations by some media reports.

According to Kazaure, Mr Peter Obi remains in the Labour party and if ever this changes, he will make that announcement himself.

He said that the movement had been inundated with calls from LP members regarding  media publication  that Obi had been offered the running mate position to Alhaji Atiku Abubakar in a new coalition being formed ahead of 2027.

“Even as we know that the publication is imaginary to the author, we are tempted not to ignore it because of the possible far-reaching misconception it will have in the public space.

“While frank and cordial engagements with our partners and stakeholders towards a coalition continue amicably, the Obidient Movement would like to state emphatically that there is no truth or basis to the reports whatsoever.

“Without any risk of contradiction, we would like to reiterate that Mr Obi has maintained that his objective and his involvement in a coalition is to provide a united front against bad governance.

“To tackle issues of bad governance, corruption, hunger, poverty, poor healthcare, out of school children and the myriad of other problems daily afflicting the people of Nigeria.”

Kazaure said that the movement wanted politics that was progressive, standing firmly with the people and serving the great people of Nigeria and not politics just for the sake of grabbing power.

The movement, therefore, advised against sensationalism and speculation.

“At this difficult time, all Nigerians and the Media, inclusive, should emphasise and contribute to building a better country.”

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, has clarified the political party the Obidient Movement belongs to.

Taking to his X page on Wednesday, Obi distanced the movement from any political party, explaining that it is a diverse and inclusive collective that transcends structures.

In a series of tweets, he said “I like to categorically state that the Obidient Movement is not directorate of any particular political party. Any individual or individuals claiming to be leaders of this non-existent directorate are simply not members of the broader Obidient Movement.

“There may be a youth mobilization directorate in political parties but the Obidient movement is far beyond a particular political party. The Obidient Movement is a diverse and inclusive collective that transcends traditional political, religious, and ethnic affiliations.”

Highlighting the movement’s expansive and inclusive nature, obi said, “It is not domiciled within any particular party or headquartered in any particular part of the country. Its membership spans across Africa and the globe, comprising individuals from various backgrounds, including rural communities, and public, private, and corporate entities.”

“United by a shared vision for a New and better Nigeria. Guided by the principles of adaptive and transformative change, progress, discipline, and democratic values, the Obidient Movement advocates for fairness, equity, inclusivity, and justice.”

The former Anambra State governor further noted that the movement is committed to accountable governance and the realization of a better future for Nigeria, stressing that the movement rejects deceitful behaviours and strives for positive change through integrity, honesty, and accountability.

It is committed to a strictly accountable and responsible code of government. Our members are committed to contributing to the realization of a better future for Nigeria through the New Nigeria project, anchored on loyalty, integrity, and democratic values.

“The Obidient Movement seeks to foster positive change through a commitment to integrity, honesty, and accountability, rejecting deceitful behaviours.

“We serve as a beacon of hope for a reimagined Nigeria, where leadership is grounded in character, capacity, competence, compassion and the well-being of all citizens,” he asserted.

Obi added, “Let this serve as a clarification that the Obidient Movement operates independently of any political party, and its membership is not limited to any particular affiliation.

Advertisementains steadfast on driving positive change and promoting a New Nigeria for all. This is who we are and will remain for all time.”

Nigeria in great need of help urgently – Obidient Movement

A coalition of political pressure groups in the Obidient Movement, rallying support for the presidential ambition of Peter Obi, candidate of the Labour Party, has averred Nigeria is in great need of help urgently.

The support groups argued that if the situation is not salvaged, it will not portend well for the future of the country, adding that the help Nigeria needs ought to come from within Nigeria and Nigerians themselves.

During a coalesced meeting of the various support convened by Dr Harna Gorah, Dr Michael Chukwujekwu, Pastor James Ime, Ebere Obiesie and Yinka Quadiri, the coalition raised an alarm over the state of the judiciary in Nigeria.

They affirmed the judiciary is the hope of man while maintaining that solutions to the issues bedevilling the electoral process in Nigeria, and the issues of governance can only be achieved through selfless commitment to the nation.

While condemning the acts of violence, thuggery, intimidation, disenfranchisement, and killings that culminated the 2023 General Election in the country, the support groups cautioned that politicians must show firm commitments to the youths, children of Nigeria, the grandchildren and children unborn.

They observed that citizens expect a Nigeria where people of all working ages could take leadership and take Nigeria forward in the current digital era, without fear of favours, alliances, and external political interferences.

“A Nigeria where the human and economic capital endowed with natural and mineral resources could not stand against her in judgement for neglect and non-utilisation; yet impoverishing in debt and consistent borrowing. A Nigeria where the life and welfare of citizens matter.

“The country is getting worse due to the pains, humiliations, denials, ever-increasing cost of living, insecurity, banditry, Boko Haram, menace of unknown gunmen, kidnapping, illicit drugs dealings, harassment and jungle justice.

“Also, privatisation of the judiciary seems to intensionally murder the sleep in Nigeria. What option is left? Sleep is murdered, and the uncertainty of daily square meals has become a continuous source of depression for families. There is no one to cry to!

“The masses are mocked by the perpetrators of Nigeria’s sorry state. If there is a time for a turn-around in Nigeria for the sake of posterity, it is now. Yes, the time is now for citizens to take back their country,” the support groups stated in a joint communique released following the meeting.

Amongst the Obidient Movement Worldwide Support Group that were in attendance are: Peter Obi Support Network (POSN), Peter ObiDatti Presidential Global Network (PPGN), Women For Peter Obi (WPO), Take Back Naija (TBN) and Peter Obi Movement (POM).
