NEW MINIMUM WAGE: We are waiting for the chart – Oborevwori

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, Tuesday, said the state government was waiting for the enabling chart to implement the new minimum wage.

Governor Oborevwori disclosed this while addressing staff of the State House of Assembly during the retirement thanksgiving in honour of immediate past Clerk of the Assembly and now Principal Secretary to the Governor, Mrs Lyna Ocholor.

The Governor said the State was taking its time to avoid making mistakes and thanked staff of the Assembly for their support since his days as Speaker of the 6th and 7th Assemblies.

Oborevwori said: “We are waiting for the chart of the new minimum wage because we don’t want to make any mistake”.

While congratulating Mrs Ocholor on her successful retirement from civil service, Governor Oborevwori noted that staff of the Assembly never went on strike throughout his time as Speaker of the Assembly.

“I am very happy to be in your midst today. It is also an opportunity to appreciate the staff of this Assembly.

“I could remember on the 11th of May, 2017 when I took over as Mr. Speaker. It was tough but the good thing is that none of the staff, even PASAN, went on strike for the six years I was Speaker.

“What I want to say is that anywhere you are working, be good. Anything you are doing, be good. As a Civil or Public Servant, you must do what you will be remembered for.

“If you check this state, Mrs Ocholor is one of the outstanding Clerks and I want to thank all of you for supporting her to do well.

“I want to urge you to continue to give Mr. Speaker and other principal officers of this Assembly, the same support that you people gave to us in the 6th and 7th Assemblies.

“The House of Assembly is a learning curve. You cannot pass through this place and remain the same. My prayer is that all of us will end well in Jesus’ name.

“I want to specially appreciate Mr. Speaker and other officers of the House of Assembly for the peaceful synergy with the executive,” Oborevwori added.

  • Alleged N40bn loan: DTSG opens up, says Oborevbwori has not borrowed one kobo

Alleged N40bn loan: DTSG opens up, says Oborevbwori has not borrowed one kobo

Disappointed by a misleading online report alleging that the Delta state has borrowed N40billion, the government has denied declaring that not even one kobo has been borrowed.

TheNewsGuru.com reports this was contained in a statement issued by Dr. Ifeanyi M. Osuoza, Commissioner, Ministry of Information, stating that:

“The Delta State Government notes with serious concern some reports in some online media platforms alleging that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori borrowed the sum of N40billion soon after assuming office.

“The reports are not only misleading, but also capable of creating misunderstanding and confusion in the State.

“For the avoidance of doubt, I wish to state categorically that the Delta State Government DID NOT Borrow N40 billion.

“And the Sheriff Oborevwori administration has not borrowed any dime till now. The records are there for anybody who cares for the truth to verify.

“What the Oborevwori administration did was to graciously guarantee a N40b loan facility for ALGON, to enable it offset the unpaid pension liabilities of retired Local Government personnel. Repayable over a five-year period, the loan is to be repaid through direct debits to the Local Government Councils.

“For the umpteen time, let me also state without equivocation that the so-called N465 billion debt amount is actually the existing debt profile accumulated by previous administrations in the State. Governor Oborevwori, as many would testify, is a prudent manager of resources, and has done the right thing by keeping to the terms of repayment as specified in the loan agreements.

“The Governor deserves commendation, not condemnation, for being a man of honour and integrity.

“Debt servicing/repayment improves the credibility of any administration in the global financial community as a serious minded and progressive administration, which will enjoy the respect and support of financial institutions. It is only a well run economy that can embark on debt servicing and still maintain its developmental vision and focus for the welfare and well being of its citizens, as the Oborevwori administration has continued to do.

“Meanwhile, I appeal to the media, as strategic partners of development, to always cross check their facts, as the ethics of the profession demands, before rushing to publish. I wish to reiterate that Governor Oborevwori maintains an open door policy, and is committed to transparency and accountability in the administration of the State.

Oborevwori expresses concern over abandoned NDDC projects in Delta

Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta has expressed concern over the abandonment of multiple projects belonging to the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC)  in the state and South-South region.

Oborevwori made the complaint on Friday, when the NDDC Managing Director, Dr Sam Ogbuku, and his management team visited him at the Government House, Asaba.

He, however,  pledged his administration’s commitment to partner the commission on infrastructure and socio-economic development of the state.

He lauded Ogbuku for his innovations geared toward making the commission more transparent and accountable to the people of the region.

The governor called for stakeholders’ engagements to enable the commission to align its development plans with the needs of the people.

“I know you are competent and I know what you are doing, but I want to say something because I am a realist.

“When I came in, there were some projects that the NDDC was doing that they were unable to complete.

“There are abandoned projects and I am happy that you mentioned them here.

“We have completed some of those projects and also the Bomadi Road, there is one of the bridges there, we went and did it; that was last year.

“And even when you are talking about the Sector C2, which is from Ughelli to Asaba, it is a federal road but we are doing it.

“The DSC and Effurun Roundabouts are all federal roads but we are doing them.

“We engaged Julius Berger for those projects because we are the ones using the roads even though they are federal roads,” he said.

The governor further said: “The issue of partnership is very key.

“Not only to partner with the multi-nationals but also partnership with the state is very good.

“When NDDC is on the same page with the governors of the Niger Delta, we will be able to plan and see what you want to do.

“So, when we are doing our budgets, we will know what to budget for.

“Not that we budget for something and the NDDC will also budget for the same thing; it becomes a problem.”

The governor recalled incidents where the state had to intervene on roads already awarded to a contractor by the NDDC.

“They removed the signpost of Delta State and put their own and took pictures.

“If we partner, there is no way they can go and collect the money

“So, I will also let you know that any of these projects that we are going to intervene, we will write to you and no contractor will collect money for job not done,” Oborevwori said.

He charged the commission to engage in effective monitoring of its projects to ensure that the people got value for their money.

Earlier, Ogbuku said he was in the state to discuss issues of mutual benefits to NDDC and the Delta Government.

He said that Delta, being the largest oil-producing state in the country, should have a large chunk of the recently passed NDDC budget.

According to him, the commission’s management is building a transformative and transparent organisation that would be accountable to the people of the region.

He called for partnership among the State Government, Commission and Chevron for the construction of the Omadino-Okerenkoko-Escravos Road and bridges.

He said that when the roads and bridges would be completed, they would help improve the economy of Delta State.

The governor added that the IDPs would soon return to their ancestral community.

“I am happy to receive Your Royal Majesties and the leadership of UPU.

“I am happy in the sense that you all stood by me and supported me to be governor and I thank God today that your son is the governor of Delta State.

“I want to appreciate the role that you people played and all other things you people have been doing.

“The last local government election was very peaceful. This is because of the fatherly role you played and the support you have been giving to this administration.

“I want to also thank you for your visit to the Okuama IDPs camp and also the visit to Okuama village. It is not a place to go by car; you went in a boat and also gave them relief materials.

“We are doing our best to make sure that peace returns to that place,” he said.

He tasked the traditional rulers on need to curb the pockets of insecurity in the area.

“We are doing our best; I want to assure the people of  Delta that we are working hand- in -hand with security agencies to ensure that the state is peaceful,” the governor said.

Earlier, the delegation led its Chairman and Ovie of Uvwie Kingdom, HRM Emmanuel Sideso Abe 1, and the President -General,  Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) Worldwide, Chief Ese Gam, thanked the governor for receiving them.

Sideso said the visit was to appreciate and intimate the governor on issues affecting the Urhobo people and Delta in general.
