Oborevwori will appoint commissioner for information soon – Perm sec

Mr Lucky Omokri, the Permanent Secretary, Delta Ministry of information, says that Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori will in due time, appoint a commissioner for the ministry.

Omokri, made this known when he received the executive members of the Asaba Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Asaba, on Monday.

The governor had appointed commissioners after his inauguration on May 29, except for the ministries of information and justice.

He said that the call by the chapel for a substantive commissioner for the ministry was genuine but asserted that the governor in his own wisdom would do the needful at the appropriate time.

He, however, charged journalists to be objective in reporting of events in the state.

Omokri also appealed for fact-check of any report before going to the press, adding that his doors were opened for journalists to verify facts.

He decried the high level of fake news and misinformation in the media space, and called on the NUJ to rid itself of quacks among its members and not to drag the noble profession to ridicule.

He also cautioned against using the media for propaganda against the government, adding that the Gov. Oborevwori-led administration and his M.O.R.E Agenda meant well for the people of the state.

Earlier, the Chapel  Chairman, Mr  Ifeanyi Olannye, said that the visit was to familiarise and to strengthen its partnership with the ministry.

He lauded the permanent secretary for receiving them in spite of the short notice and had called for a substantive commissioner in the ministry to run the government affairs.

“This ministry is the information hub of the state. Having a substantive commissioner for information will help journalists to verify information and to avoid speculative journalism.

“It is expected that the information commissioner will from time to time brief journalists on the day-to-day activities of government,” Olannye said.

He said that the leadership of his chapel was ready to partner with the ministry in implementation of the M.O.R.E Agenda of the Gov. Oborevwori-led administration to ensure development in the state.

  • Agba promises to amend laws that give power to Edo gov to suspend, depose traditional rulers

Agba promises to amend laws that give power to Edo gov to suspend, depose traditional rulers

A frontline governorship aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in the governorship election holding in the state on September 21, 2024, Prince Clem Ikanade Agba, at the weekend, said he was going to free traditional rulers from the excessive power of the state governor to dethrone and/or suspend them, if he was elected governor of the state.

Prince Agba, who made the remarks at Ikpoba Okha local government area (LGA), during his continuation of consultation with party faithful and loyalists, said a situation where a governor could dethrone or suspend a monarch was not healthy for the traditional institution in the state.

“If elected governor, I will amend the law that gives such powers to the governor to dethrone or suspend traditional ruler,” he said.

Agba, who is a royalty and a son to the late Oliola (king of Uzanu in Etsako East LGA of the state), maintained that he would sponsor the amendment of the provisions of the Traditional Rulers and Chieftaincy Law of 1979. through the State House of Assembly.

He further said that the present situation where a governor would be in confrontation with the revered traditional rulers was a dent on the valuable culture and tradition of the state.

Agba had visited Ikpoba Okha, Oredo, and Egor local government secretariats of the party in Edo South senatorial district, for consultation with the party faithful, where he delivered to the crowded audience the message of hope, anchored on his ‘TRUST” [Transforming our Rural and Urban Spaces Together] Agenda

Agba, the immediate past Minister of State for Budget and National Planning, intimated stakeholders of his intention to contest for nomination during the primary election of the APC.

He told his many loyalists that he was in the race to change the narrative of poor infrastructure development in the state.

At Ikpoba Okha, where a large turn out of women, men and youths welcomed him, Agba said as commissioner in the state during the administration of Senator Adams Oshiomhole, he was instrumental to the enactment of control measures of gully erosion in the area.

He said roads were also tarred during that period, lamenting that since then, nothing had happened.

He also noted that rather than add more infrastructure to the existing ones, buildings were being demolished by the administration of Governor Godwin Obaseki.

He disclosed that data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) showed that the state inflationary rate stands at 26.6%, saying food shortage stands at 33.5%.

He said these were necessitated by poor road networks in rural areas, which makes the evacuation of farm produce near impossible with only about 40% getting to cities.

“These are things we want to deal with if elected governor,” he said.

He declared that he would not only build schools but also employ teachers, unlike the current situation of schools without teachers.

He said that if there were trained teachers in schools, pupils could compete with others at the international level.

“I want to produce students locally who can compete internationally like in our days. I am a product of local schools. If the education I had took me to the international stage, why not now? I will revisit the state of roads, schools, and hospitals in the state when given the opportunity.

“We will also revisit the urban renewal of Oshiomhole’s administration, which has been abandoned by the present government,” he said.

At Egor, Agba reiterated his desire to see to the development of the state from the grassroots to the top, away from the current situation every segment of the society had been abandoned.

At Oredo, the immediate past minister cleared the air on the allegation that he did not award contracts to indigenes of the state during his tenure as a minister.

He declared that his hands were tied because he was a junior minister who was not in a position to award contracts.

He explained that as a Minister of Stste for Budget and National Planning, he was not in a position to award contracts, but through his connections, he was able to attract projects to the state.

He said that because his mother died of cancer, he now operates a foundation – The Clem Agba Foundation – where women can be screened for cancer-related diseases free of charge and free vaccine to boot.

He said the foundation was in the memory of his late mother.

Empowerment for girl child is empowerment for all – Oborevwori

The Wife of the Delta Governor and Founder of ”You Matter Charity Foundation”, Mrs. Tobore Oborevwori, says empowerment for the girl child is empowerment for all.

Speaking in Asaba on Tuesday as part of the activities to mark the commemoration of the International Day of the Girl Child, Oborevwori
affirmed that the world would be better when females are empowered.

Oborevwori, who was represented by the wife of the Chief of Staff, Mrs Eyoma Erijo, said “over the years, female children were seen as minor creatures whose voices should not be heard; fathers who had female children were not recognized by their families.

“Tradition once relegated the Girl Child to the background; they lacked the right to quality education and the right to a  good life.

“Factors like poverty, rape, sexual abuse, violence and early marriage derailed the success of the girl child.

“Today, the power of the Girl Child cannot be underestimated; we are witnessing a turnaround in the scheme of things.”

Oborevwori also said, “more than ever, female children are now soaring in  places where males once dominated.

”They read courses that are meant as it were only for boys;  they come out with good grades and even serve in the same committee with their male counterparts.

“Let me remind us that empowerment of a Girl Child is for the benefit of all. I therefore encourage parent here present to do all you can to empower your daughters.”

She therefore encouraged mothers and parents to make it a point of duty to serve as mentors and sources of encouragement to their children, especially the female.

Earlier in her remarks, the host and Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Community Support Services and Girl Child Development, Ms Orode Uduaghan, emphasized the need to keep encouraging the girl child.

On the theme for this year’s celebration: ”Our Time is Now, Our Rights, Our Future”, she said the rights of the Girl Child should be upheld at all points.

In her goodwill message, the  Commissioner for Women Affairs, Community and Social Development, Mrs Pat Ajudua, advised girls to protect themselves for the future.

”Now is the time to chart a course for yourself and tell God what you want out of your future”.

On her part, a representative of Anglican Girls Grammar School (AGGS), Asaba, Miss Ifeanyi Marvelous, said, “The girl child is the mother of the future, she should be seen and heard.”

The celebration was marked with different activities, including quiz competitions and speech presentations from students from various schools across the state.
