BREAKING: Man Utd sign Odion Ighalo

Manchester United have signed former Watford striker Odion Ighalo from Shanghai Shenhua on loan until the end of the season.

The deal to bring the 30-year-old Nigeria international to Old Trafford contains no option to buy.

Ighalo, who is still in China but is expected to fly to the UK in the next few days, scored 39 goals in 99 matches for Watford between 2014 and 2017.

He then moved to the Chinese Super League, first with Changchun Yatai.

After two seasons he moved to Shanghai Shenhua and has scored 10 times in 19 games.

His form for his country has been eye-catching, finishing as top scorer in African Cup of Nations qualifying with seven goals, before scoring five at the tournament during the summer.

It is understood there was interest from other Premier League clubs but Ighalo wanted to play for United.

He is United’s first senior loan signing since Radamel Falcao’s arrival from Monaco in 2014.

  • Odion Ighalo, Slimani on Manchester United’s radar

Odion Ighalo, Slimani on Manchester United’s radar

Nigeria’s international, Odion Ighalo is on the radar of Manchester United to solve their goals problem in the absence of Marcus Rashford following long-term injury lay-off.

Also, Algeria’s international, Islam Slimani is also being looked at. United want to secure the two players on loan.

Former Watford forward Ighalo is with Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua and has two years left on his contract while Slimani is on loan at Monaco from Leicester.

Nigeria international Ighalo scored 17 goals in 55 Premier League appearances for the Hornets before securing a move to Chinese League One in 2017.

Slimani has 13 goals in 46 appearances for his parent club Leicester but has been loaned out to Newcastle, Fenerbahce and Monaco since his arrival at the King Power Stadium in 2016 from Sporting Lisbon.

After their 2-0 defeat to Burnley at Old Trafford in midweek, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer indicated that the club – six points behind fourth-placed Chelsea after successive defeats – are in need of ‘quality’ signings, with Paul Pogba as well as Rashford currently sidelined.

A £30m offer has been submitted for Birmingham City’s 16-year-old Jude Bellingham.

Sporting Lisbon’s Bruno Fernandes remains intent on a move to Old Trafford, but talks between the clubs have stalled, with United currently £10m short of Sporting’s valuation.

Speaking ahead of an FA Cup tie at Tranmere, Solskjaer insisted the club was still working on reinforcements in a “difficult” market.

“It’s not going to be a quick fix. And it’s not going to be like eight players in or 10 players in one transfer window,” he said.

“We’ve had one proper transfer window in the summer because the Januarys are difficult, but we are trying to do something now.”

Marcus Rashford’s injury has certainly left Manchester United even lighter up front following Romelu Lukaku’s departure in the summer.

The club were confident of signing Erling Haaland from Red Bull Salzburg this month, but he chose Borussia Dortmund instead, going on to score a 20-minute hat-trick on his debut for the German side.

According to Sky Sports, United have considered various short-term solutions, including Edinson Cavani, Dries Mertens and Mario Mandzukic, but they are all 32 or over and United might be better off pursuing Lyon’s Moussa Dembele.

“United do need experience and they know that, but the trouble with players like Cavani is that they are maybe too experienced, in terms of their age,” says Sky Sports News’ James Cooper.

Dembele, who turns 24 in July, has experience of playing in England and Scotland with Fulham and Celtic respectively. He has fired 36 goals in 76 appearances for Lyon since moving to the club in 2018, and figures highly on Manchester United’s long-term wishlist.

“I think there is a realisation that they can’t get someone in for the short-term because there aren’t many suitable options out there,” says Cooper.

“But what they might try to do, rather than look for that short-term fix, is to try and bring one of their world-class targets for the summer forward to January and that’s why we have seen them sending scouts to watch Dembele.

“What the Burnley game proved is that without Rashford, you haven’t got the players there who can take the two or three big chances that come up per game. Mason Greenwood is too young to play in every game, and Anthony Martial is not scoring enough to lead the attack.

“They need someone more ruthless who can slot in, but the difficulty is that every club in the world now knows they are desperate.

“Ole has been very noble about making sacrifices and getting rid of (Romelu) Lukaku in the summer, but in hindsight he knows he should have got another body in there. Dembele could now be that man but it won’t be easy to get him.”

Strikers Odion Ighalo and Islam Slimani are loan targets for Manchester United following Marcus Rashford’s injury, according to Sky Sports.

  • I left Premier League because of money – Ighalo

I left Premier League because of money – Ighalo

Former Super Eagles striker, Odion Ighalo, has admitted that he left Premier League side, Watford to join Chinese side, Changchun Yatai back in 2017 because of ‘money’.

Ighalo scored 33 goals in 82 matches for Watford during his spell at the English club.

“There’s lot of reasons I went there [China]. I wasn’t playing much in Watford and I did not want to keep sitting on the bench,” Ighalo told the Watford Observer.

“Watford fans don’t know it but I had an offer from Crystal Palace on the table and West Bromwich but the club was looking for big money and that’s why I accepted Changchun Yatai at the time. So, instead of me sitting down there and not playing I had to move.

“When the opportunity came for me I accepted it because China could pay what Watford wanted. But this is past tense now. I am happy and Watford are happy because they made a lot of money with me. And they are still my team in the Premier League.

“I don’t know about other players. Maybe they go there for different ambitions. Me? Yes, I went there for the money I am honest but I don’t know why other players go there for.”

He added: “The league is really growing, they have a lot of foreign coaches and players who improve the league.

“All I can say is that the Chinese Super League is improving every day and I am very happy about my choice. Regrets? No everything is going well, I am happy there and working hard.”

  • Ighalo’s retirement premature – Disu

    Ighalo’s retirement premature – Disu

The former Technical Adviser of the Nigeria Football Association (NFA), Tunde Disu OFR, has said that the decision of Super Eagles Striker, Odion Ighalo to retire was premature.
Disu gave his opinion in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday while commenting on the decision of the Eagles first-choice striker.
NAN reports that Ighalo, who emerged as the highest goal scorer in the just-concluded Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt announced his decision to quit the Super Eagles after the competition.
Disu, said that Ighalo could still rescind his decision to quit the national team, adding that the team had a lot to learn from him as a senior colleague.
“The decision of Ighalo to quit the national team is premature, the team still needs him and he cannot afford to quit now.
“My reason is based on no other assumption other than the fact that the team at present did not have any standby player, with experience to take over.
“He is leaving without any replacement that is experienced enough, the players in the team now have yet to get the required playing time to step into his shoes.
“My position is not that the country did not have quality strikers, no, but other strikers should have been paired alongside him to learn,” he said.
Disu said that the decision of the striker to quit should be a concern because he was the only tested striker among his peers, noting that he should have been played alongside other strikers.
“Ighalo’s decision to quit should give the technical crew a concern because I have been in that position before. There is a need to get this right.
“Ighalo has yet to play alongside other players, maybe play as a main striker with others as supporting strikers behind him.
“Sometimes as well, we need to tweak our formation to test new players, mainly during friendly games to give a deserving view of the whole team.

“Ighalo really tried for the team and if he is considering the negative vibes from football fans, maybe that is a bit childish, he should have developed thick skin to that.
“Criticisms are part of life, we cannot run away from it, even the best footballers of this world had faced the same situation one time or the other, he cannot be an exception,” he said.
Disu also advised the Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr, to allow the players to play their natural position instead of converting them to positions that cannot allow them to realise their full potential.
“I think Rohr should allow the players into their natural position instead of converting them out of position; this is not helpful.
“I noticed that most of the players in the national team are being played out of position, Mikel Obi from defensive midfielder to attacking.
“Also, Oghenekaro Etebo from assistant striker to a defensive midfielder, same goes for Iwobi who has never played as a playmaker in Arsenal to playmaker in the Super Eagles.
“To get the best from these players they should not be played out of their natural positions they are playing in their clubs because they must have mastered the play more than what they are doing now,” he said.
Disu said that the decision of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to send Rohr on a refresher course was right, adding that same gesture should have been extended to his assistants as well.
“The decision of NFF, to sponsor Rohr to a refresher course is a right step in the right direction, he has a contract and he has done his best for the team.
“What NFF should have considered is to extend same gesture to Rohr’s assistants like Imama Amamakpabo and other technical crew members.
“Even, there are some refresher courses that are free; NFF can afford to send the technical crew to such refresher courses in other to upgrade their knowledge.
“Its high time we trust our own indigenous coaches to take over the realms of affairs of the national team.
“We have been relatively successful with coaches like Stephen Keshi who won the AFCON for us and also Shuabu Amodu who are both late now. We can also support our own as well,” he said.

Why I turned down Barcelona – Ighalo

Super Eagles striker, Odion Ighalo has revealed why he rejected Barcelona’s offer in the January transfer window.

The China-based forward was linked with a possible move to Barcelona but the transfer did not materialize.

The former Watford man ended up joining Shanghai Greenland Shenhua.

Ighalo said he turned down a move to the Camp Nou because he was not assured of playing time.

The Super Eagles frontman also said that he wanted to secure his future as his contract with Changchun Yatai was running out.

Score Nigeria quoted the player as saying that ”The deal was for me to play on loan for a season, but I was not ready to take chances as my playing minutes could not be guaranteed and at end of the season I will be a free agent.

”I preferred to secure my future my signing a longer deal in China instead and that was why the Barcelona move fell through.”

Barcelona had been in the market for a striker to provide cover for their hitman Luis Suarez.

The LaLiga leaders eventually signed Ghanaian Kevin-Prince Boateng on loan from Sassuolo until the end of the season.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that three-time African champions, Nigeria, have already booked a place in the AFCON holding in Egypt in July, with the encounter against Seychelles hardly more than an academic exercise.

But the Eagles have spoken of the need to end the qualification series on a high and maintain their reputation while using the game to kick-start preparations for the continental competition.

They take on the Pirates of Seychelles at the Stephen Keshi Stadium from 4p.m. on Friday.

A statement by Ademola Olajire NFF’s Director of Communications said that nine players including forward Ighalo, and midfielders Iwobi and Ajayi were among first arrivals at the team’s camp in Asaba.

“The bulk of the invited group of 23 will come in on Tuesday, with the international friendly against the Pharaohs of Egypt on Tuesday next week also in mind,” Olajire said.

NAN also reports that Technical Adviser Gernor Rohr called up 23 players for the two matches, with Ikouwem Utin and Effiong leaping onto the list as a result of injuries to Samuel Kalu and Ola Aina.

“We are in a good direction, we just want to continue to work hard together as a team, not to feel relaxed just because we have gotten the ticket to the AFCON,” Ighalo said.

“It’s one thing to qualify and it’s another thing to go there and perform and that is what we want to do.”

He added that “We want to compete, we want to do better than what the Eagles before us have done in the past, I just want us to keep the concentration level high, and who knows – everything is possible.”

Sanchez Flores lured me to Shenshua – Ighalo

Shanghai Shenhua new signing Odion Ighalo has described the chance to be coached again by Quique Sanchez Flores as a ‘great opportunity’.

Earlier this week, the 29-year-old made a return to the Chinese Super League, joining Shenhua following Changchun Yatai’s relegation to League One last season.

The move reunites the striker with Sanchez Flores under whom he enjoyed an impressive goalscoring run in his debut Premier League season at Watford.

“It’s important to sort my club future and I’m happy that it comes with a great opportunity to play under coach Quique again,” Ighalo told BBC Sport.

“From the beginning, he made it clear that he wanted me and I completely understand what that means.

“We’ve had some good times together and importantly it’s good to continue in a league you’ve come to understand, so I am really excited.”

Super Eagles striker Ighalo joins another Chinese club

Super Eagles striker Odion Ighalo has joined Shanghai Shenhua FC in China after Changchun Yatai FC got relegated from the Chinese Super League.

Ighalo scored 22 goals for the side in the last campaign but that did not stop them from returning to the lower Chinese football cadre.

“Shanghai Greenland Shenhua Football Club and Changchun Yatai Football Club reached a transfer agreement, Nigerian striker Odion Ighalo officially joined Shanghai Greenland Shenhua,” the club said in a statement.

“The joining of Yi Haro will effectively enhance Shenhua’s frontcourt attack and enrich the offensive means.

“With two seasons of experience in the Super League and working with current coach Flores, Ihalo [sic]will be able to integrate into the team as quickly as possible. Looking forward to his new season, he will help Shenqi to win more victories.”
