Victims recount ordeal, say they paid millions into ex-FCC officer’s account

Mr Andulamalik Ahmed and Ali Yaro both victims of alleged job racketeering at the Federal Character Commission (FCC) say they paid N1 million and N2 million respectively for job placement in the commission.

Ahmed and Yaro made this known when they appeared as witnesses at the ongoing investigation by the House of Representatives ad hoc committee probing job racketeering and mismanagement of IPPIS in Abuja on Tuesday.

Speaking on the issue, Ahmed, an indigene of Adamawa said he met the driver of the Commissioner, representing Taraba, Mr Yisha’u Gambo who promised to get him a job in the FCC on the condition that he paid the sum of N1 million.

He however said he refused to pay the money to Yisha’u because he was an ordinary driver.

“It was Yisha’u who introduced Mr Harunu Kolo, a former staff of the FCC and the desk officer of IPPIS in the commission.

“I paid N1 million into Kolo’s account when I confirmed that he was a staff of the commission, I refused to pay to the driver for security reasons.

“I transfered N1 million to Kolo’s account. We initially agreed on N1.5million with Gambo, a driver to the Commissioner, representing Taraba.”

He said 27 of them were issued appointment letters having paid the requested money, adding that in spite of the fact that appointment letters were issued, they were not posted to any designated MDAs.

“The Head of Human Resources in FCC confirmed to us that our appointments were genuine before they cleverly took it from us. I was engaged for two years before I was disengaged without posting.”

He said contrary to information by the FCC that there was no recruitment since 2017, there was recruitment in 2021 and all the commissioners had a hand in the recruitments exercise.

“Kolo convinced me to pay so that our employment can come after that of Directors and the Commissioners.”

Ahmed who betrayed emotion begged the committee to help get his job back, adding that he was not satisfied with receiving salary without doing the required job.

On the other hand,  Yaro, another witness from Borno said he was made to pay N2 million to secure a job in the FCC.

“ I paid N2 million into Badamasi Jalo’s account, another victim but acting as agent for collection of monies for Kolo.

“Kolo and Badamasi both assured me that I will get appointment letter in January,” he said, adding that he was captured on IPPIS on Aug. 5,  2021, but never got placement.

“ I graduated 11 years ago and I had a chance to become Boko Haram but I refused because I wanted to be a good citizen,” he said.

Meanwhile, Rep Yusuf Gagdi, the Chairman of the committee said the testimonies from the two victims should encourage all Nigerians who have been shortchanged to appear.

“I am very happy that you said you had the offer to become a Boko Haram but refused.

” We cannot cry like you but our hearts blead for this country, we are going to do justice for you, we are not here to witch hunt anybody.

“You have told us who you gave money to. We will invite you again for a closed-door meeting with the other 27 victims, ” he said.

Gagdi re-invited Kolo to again appear before the committee on Wednesday by 10 a. m.

He also summoned the driver to the Taraba Commissioner and the Secretary to appear before the committee.

  • Police to sanction officers discharging domestic duties for govt. officials

Police to sanction officers discharging domestic duties for govt. officials

The Osun Police Command says it will henceforth sanction its officers attached to government officials caught carrying out domestic duties for their principals.

The warning is contained in a statement issued by the command’s Spokesperson, SP Yemisi Opalola, and made available to newsmen in Osogbo on Monday.

Opalola explained that police officers attached to government officials were to protect their lives and property and not to serve as their domestic workers.

“The command is miffed with consternation the way and manner government officials and personalities use police orderlies attached to them for domestic duties, such as carrying handbags, umbrellas and opening of gates, amongst other menial duties.”

“The command, therefore, warns police officers attached to these officials to stop carrying out or serving purposes other than protecting their principals from security threats,” the statement added.

It further stated that “such behaviour is highly unethical, unprofessional and would attract appropriate sanctions against erring police personnel.

“Government officials are therefore enjoined to employ the services of domestic staff and personal assistants to carry out such services,” the statement added.

Military officer refuses to vacate apartment, claims unexpired rent

A Military officer, Joshua Olorunfemi, has refused to vacate his rented apartment, claiming that his rent is yet to expire.

Olorunfemi told an Ilorin Area Court sitting at Igboro Centre on Thursday, that his annual rent was N152,000 against N165,000 as claimed by the landlord’s lawyer.

He insisted that his receipt of payment read February but his rent had not expired.

He explained that there was an oral agreement between him and the landlord which made him pay half of the rent of N70,000.

The tenant further said that part of their agreement was for the landlord to repair the sitting room ceiling, but he refused and made him suffer, as the leaking roof almost spoiled his property.

“When I complained to the Lawyer in charge, he sent N15,000 to me, to repair the house  but I fixed the sitting room and other parts of the apartment with N115,900,” Olorunfemi explained.

Mr Olanrewaju Babalola, a Litigation Secretary managing the property, had earlier told the court that the tenant defaulted two months rent and the landlord wanted repossession of his property for personal use.

Babalola said that the tenant had been served eviction notice, but refused to vacate the apartment and tendered the documents to the court as evidence.

The presiding Judge, AbdulQadir Ibrahim accepted the documents as exhibits P1 and P2.

He ordered the tenant to produce all his evidence of payment and provide proof that his rent has not expired.

The case was adjourned to May 30, for proof of payment and all other evidence to the case.

  • Army denies forceful eviction of retired officer

Army denies forceful eviction of retired officer

The Nigerian Army (NA) has dismissed as misleading, reports in a section of the media that soldiers invaded the Enugu residence of a retired army officer and evicted his family.

The Director, Army Public Relations, Brig.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, in a statement on Thursday, said the story was deliberately skewed to tarnish the image and reputation of the Nigerian army.

According to Nwachukwu, it is expedient to set the record straight and clear grey areas on the ejection of the retired senior officer.

He said House 7 on Abakaliki Lane was among Federal Government houses accommodating Nigerian army officers in Enugu for over two decades.

He said that the house was allocated to retired Col. EL Ugwoke, then a Major, as his official residence when he was posted as the Deputy Commander 82 Division Intelligence Group in 2007.

Nwachukwu explained that the officer continued to occupy the house even after he was posted out of the division.

He added that it was later discovered that he attempted to dubiously appropriate the house to himself, using some officials of Enugu State Government.

Nwachukwu said that in 2020, a committee was instituted by then General Officer Commanding (GOC) to ascertain the status of the property.

He said that the property was discovered to be among the houses handed over to 82 Division by past administrators to ameliorate the accommodation challenges of the Division.

“That the said property was not among 26 residential quarters officially handed over to the Enugu State Government in 2015.

“That there are no documents to confirm that the said property was sold or paid for by anyone.

“It is worthy of note that officers of the army occupying institutionalised houses are expected to vacate such accommodation while on posting or retirement.

“However, the retired senior officer failed to comply knowing fully the rippling effects on accommodation status of others posted in, and serving officers,” he said.

The Army spokesman also said the alleged brutalisation of the retired officer’s wife and children in the said publication was outright falsehood aimed at whipping up undue sentiments.

He said the Nigerian army was a disciplined institution with utmost regard for family institution and the vulnerable, particularly women and children.

According to him, the ejection process was audio and visually documented, as it was envisaged that such allegation could arise.

“Emphatically, neither the wife nor children were brutalised and no property was damaged in the process of eviction.

“The retired senior officer’s belongings were simply transfered from the house in question to his personal house at number 127 Park Avenue, GRA Enugu to pave way for other serving officers to be accommodated.

“This was after serving the retired officer three previous official notices and several appeals for him to vacate the property after his retirement in 2021.

“The general public is advised to disregard this misleading publication as it is devoid of the actual facts of what transpired.

“The Nigerian army will not relent in catering for the wellbeing and welfare of its serving and retired personnel within the ambits of legitimacy,” he said.
