  • Withdrawal: Disobey my order, get sanctioned, IGP warns unit commanders

The Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has warned all police Unit Commanders against flouting the order to withdraw personnel from VIPs as well as political and public office holders in the country.

The IGP gave the warning at a meeting with the Police Mobile Force (PMF), Special Protection Unit (SPU) and Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU) Commanders on Tuesday in Abuja.

Recall Idris that had on Monday ordered the withdrawal of the personnel from the group of persons which also included business entrepreneurs and those in multinational companies.

The police boss said that any commander that violates the order would be heavily sanctioned.

Sanction awaits any officer who violates the order to withdraw personnel from the above mentioned persons.

We want to ensure absolute withdrawal of personnel this time around, any violation will be met with stiffer sanction,” he said.

He said that CTU personnel were not meant to be deployed to any individual or organisations because of their critical role in the force.

Idris, who gave Tuesday as deadline for the withdrawal, said that the primary responsibility of the Nigeria Police was to provide security to all citizens.

We must face and surmount the security challenges confronting us by all means, “he said.

The police boss described the frequent attacks on police personnel in the course of their duty in the country as alarming.

He, however, blamed some of the incidents on police personnel who were not at alert while on duty.

Idris said that PMF personnel would be deployed to all schools in Yobe, Borno and Adamawa in order to prevent a recurrence of the recent ugly incident at the Government Girls Science and Technical College, Dapchi, Yobe.

  • We lose 9,028 officers annually to death, dismissal, retirement – IG

The Inspector General of Police ( IGP), Mr Ibrahim Idris says the Nigeria Police Force loses 9,028 officers to death, dismissal, and retirement annually.

Idris made the disclosure at the monthly meeting with Commissioners of Police and other top-ranking officers of the force on Wednesday in Abuja.

The IGP said that the development had seriously affected the manpower of the force.

He noted that the 308, 000 police workforce was grossly inadequate for the effective policing of the more than 180 million people in the country.

The police boss said that the country was far below the UN standard of one policeman to 400 persons adding that the Federal Government had approved the recruitment of 6,000 policemen into the rank and file.

“The issue of manpower is one problem the Nigeria Police Force is facing,” he said.

On the attachment of policemen to private persons, Idris said that the force would review it to ensure that they worked for the general public.

“There is a need for us to have a police that will work for the generality of Nigerians,” he said.

He said that he had directed police commissioners and zonal Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, to compile the number of policemen attached to individuals in the country.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015 directed that police personnel attached to unauthorized and some prominent persons in the country be withdrawn and deployed to confront the security challenges in the nation.

The Chairman, Police Service Commission (PSC), Mr Mike Okiro, said that more than 150,000 policemen were attached to unauthorized persons and Very Important Personalities (VIPs) in the country.

He said that the meeting was aimed at having a comprehensive resolution on the issue of illegal firearms in the country.

Idris noted that the alleged arming of militia groups by state governments and individuals was not in the interest of the country.

He urged the commissioners of police to embark on campaign against illegal firearms in their various commands.

Idris said that plans were underway to construct an armoury for the storage of illegal firearms seized from militias across the country.

He said that the force had taken several measures to check security challenges across the country.

  • 2019: Avoid ‘political temptations’ from politicians, parties – IGP warns officers

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, on Wednesday warned police officers to avoid temptation from political actors as the 2019 election draws near.

Describing the election year as “critical,” the police chief urged police personnel to be professional and steadfast.

He made the call during the last meeting of the year with commissioners of police and other senior officers in Abuja.

And, contrary to claims that the police has continued to disobey court order which asked it to unseal the Peace Corp headquarters building located in Jabi area of Abuja, Idris said the Force has appealed the court order.

He said police has asked the court to stay the execution of judgment on the matter.

He said the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) would now focus on violent crimes.

On the 2019 election, he said: “Officers should be aware that from next year, we are entering a critical phase in the political space of this country and this critical phase include most of the election that would be conducted.

“Officers should be steadfast and obviously do their best to ensure that wherever you find yourselves, that you do your utmost best to ensure that the political situation be handled maturely and orderly.

“We have to avoid temptations wherever we find ourselves. Try to avoid temptation from political actors and other people that may try to tempt you at the cost of having a smooth election.

“We need to be professional, especially in the coming years when election would be conducted.

“Our job is a difficult job because we are close to the civil population more than any security agency and I think at various levels, CPs should imbibe it in their officers the need to be very available and professional with the civilian population because they have trust in us and we have to serve the interest of the generality of Nigerians in ensuring that we have a fair and just election.”
