Minister of Interior, Aregbesola advocates for release of 30% of prison inmates

Minister of Interior, Mr Rauf Aregbesola, has announced that he would meet with state governors over release of 30 percent of inmates from Nigerian Prison across the country.

Aregbesola made this announcement during an interview with Newsmen on Sunday

The minister said the interface was necessary as more than 90 per cent of the inmates were being held for contravening various state laws.

He also said that over 70 percent of the 75,635 inmates at present were awaiting trial.

The Osun born  minister added that  the federal offenders in the system were far less than 10 per cent, adding that the bulk of people in custody were those who have run foul of state laws.

He said they were therefore being kept under the legal jurisdiction of their respective states.

The minister further explained that the decongestion of the 253 custodial centres nationwide was necessary as some of the inmates have no reason to remain in custody.

Aregbesola called on all stakeholders to work towards a “better-structured criminal justice administration, otherwise, we will just be left with congested and overcrowded facilities”.

He said, “I have written the Nigerian Governors Forum to allow me to come and address them on how they can support the process of decongestion.

“Because the governors must buy into this system for us to do a massive decongestion, especially of Awaiting Trial Inmates.

“If we get the buy-in of state judicial authorities and the government of the states, we can pull out 30 per cent of those who are there.”

He said some of the awaiting trial inmates have stayed longer than the punishment provided by law for the crime they were arrested for.

“If you look at a man that is caught for petty theft and you are trying him for three years, even if you convict him for that crime, how long will he stay?

“How long will that fellow stay, probably six months, but without trial, he will be there for three years.

“Again, you arrested a boy under the bridge, there is no fixed crime and he is there forever and so on and so forth.

“So, we need the buying in and support from state governments.

“This is for them to critically know the situation and let them set up committees that will profile all those who are there.

“And help either to convict, release them or see if they have overstayed their required time,” the minister said.

Osun APC crisis deepens as party chair calls ‘The Osun Progressives’ bluff

The last may not have been heard about the crisis rocking the APC in Osun state as the chairman, Prince ‘Gboyega Famoodun said it would be needless to go into any pact with The Osun Progressives.

The Osun Progressives is a group in the party backed by the Interior Minister, Rauf Aregbesola, and it is seeking reorganisation of APC in the state.

Reacting to the demand while addressing journalists on Thursday, Famoodun said the group lacked competence and moral right to canvass for restructuring of APC in Osun, having worked against Oyetola’s re-election in the recently held guber poll.

He also said for the offences members of TOP committed, APC ward chairmen had been told to write reports on them, noting that the constitution of the party would be used to deal with their different offences.

The Chairman recalled how followers of Aregbesola, allegedly boasted that they would ensure that Oyetola would not be re-elected in the governorship election, adding that the group openly campaigned and voted against APC candidate in the poll.

According to him, the leadership of APC knew what to do in handling members of TOP before the governorship election.

He noted that “we, all along, had been thinking that they would have a genuine change of mind by joining us for the re-election of Governor Oyetola.

“Since they, the TOP people, under the patronship of Aregbesola, had done their worst by working assiduously and conscientiously by teaming up with the PDP for the success of Adeleke, which is the highest level of an anti-party activity that can be committed by any politician, it would be a needless venture to enter into any pact with the shameless political group that is bereft of honour.

“The said self-styled TOP renegades should be told that apart from the fact that they lack competence and moral right to dictate or canvass for the restructuring of our party, the APC in Osun State, it would be foolhardy to allow identified enemies who had worked for the success of an opposition an unfettered chance in our domain.”

He declared that though all executive positions of the party at all its levels in line with the constitution of the party have stipulated tenure, Oyetola had promised to shortly after the governorship election, carry out an effective restructuring and reinvigoration of the party.

Asked if the party would approach tribunal over the result of the last governorship election, Famoodun said, “we are going to the Tribunal and our lawyers let us know that we have good cases at the tribunal.”

But reacting, the factional state secretary of the APC in Osun, Mr. Lani Baderinwa, said the attempt to punish members of TOP would amount to impunity, insisting that the group never abandoned the party at any point.

He said, “They are suffering a kind of amnesia. They seem to have forgotten that some many waters passed under the bridge before we got to this point. The thing that they said the governor wanted to do in the text they read was actually what we started talking about 2 years ago. We said let’s restructure the party, let’s reinvigorate it, that has been what we have been talking about in the last two years.

“They now accept with us what we have been asking about since, which they refused to acknowledge. It is so sad that they have started again. Instead of getting to be reasonable, so that we can do what we suppose to do together. One of them said with or without TOP they would win.

“Is it not clear now that, that was a fallacy? We didn’t leave APC. If Adeleke said Aregbesola’s men helped him to win, did he say we voted for him? They said we are inconsequential and they are now crying wolves where none exist.”

Osun State : I regret supporting Oyetola in 2018 – Rauf Aregbesola

Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola has hinted that he regretted working for Adegboyega Oyetola to become Governor of Osun in 2018.

Aregbesola who dropped the bombshell at Ikire in Irewole Local Government Area of the state during the consultation tour and presentation of former Secretary to the Osun State Governor, Alhaji Moshood Adeoti as group’s governorship aspirant in the Saturday primary election said that he has realized his mistakes that the person that was supposed to be put forward was neglected.

According to him, Governor Oyetola has continued to wage war against him since his emergence, adding that the Governor has always believed that he didn’t want him to emerge in the first place.

“I served this state with the whole of my heart, I also served Oyetola so that he can succeed me in office.”

“When we came to this Ikire for his campaign, we were drenched in rain from Akire’s palace to this place. He is now in that office, he now claims that I am his enemy. Those who contested against him during our party primary were the ones he pulled closer while he fights me.

“I sent people to help me beg him, not that i asked that he should like me but that he shouldn’t abuse me or destroy my legacies but he wouldn’t listen.

“All that I told and warned him not to do, was what he did. He oppose what I did, all the things I did together with him for eight years, he opposed and reversed.

“He thought he can destroy me through my work, nobody was pushing him, he is pushing himself. He deliberately tows that path. He has deliberately waged war against me”.

“When I observed that he would not listen I decided to call people to chart a way forward because i believe that progressives family must not be destroyed”.

“We are the ones that bear the flag of this party, we fought for it since 2004. The owner can not stand while his possession is destroyed. Those people who don’t know how we built the party are unpredictable, they can do and undo”

“The party chairman, Famodun, was poached from PDP, he may return to that party, we must be careful so as not to allow him lead us astray.
