Real reason why Ogun APC suspended Gbenga Daniel revealed

Senator representing Ogun East in the National Assembly and former governor of Ogun State, Chief Gbenga Daniel, was suspended for a series of anti-party actions against the party beginning from the 2023 general elections and right up to the recent House of Representatives by-election in Remo, sources familiar with the matter have said.

The senator, whose suspension by the leadership of Ward 4, Sagamu Local Government Area, was ratified by the State Working Committee (SWC), last week, at a meeting presided over by the chairman of the party in the state, Chief Yemi Sanusi, was said to have deliberately shunned the by-election campaign of the party even when the National Chairman of the party, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, visited the state to lead the campaign.

He was alleged to have sent a message to his supporters asking them to vote in the Saturday, August 17 election like they did “last time,” a reference to the March 18, 2023, governorship election during which he mobilised his supporters to vote for the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Hon Kessington Adebutu, after cutting a deal with the then candidate, who is currently standing trial for alleged vote buying and criminal conspiracy.

The APC leadership was, it was learnt, angered that the senator had enjoyed uncommon privileges since joining the party but had opted to work against it, except during his own election.

The leadership was also miffed by the allegation that Daniel and his sides began threatening the leadership of Ward 4 after an invitation was extended to him to respond to the claims against him.

It will be recalled that Governor Dapo Abiodun, was prevailed upon by traditional rulers in the state, led by the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba (Dr) Sikiru Adetona, to back Daniel’s senatorial bid and persuade the then incumbent senator, Lekan Mustapha, to concede the ticket to Daniel.

Immediately Daniel got the ticket, however, he was said to have turned against the governor, reasoning that if he stopped the governor from winning his re-election battle, that would put him in a vantage position to secure the Ogun East re-election ticket in 2027, since he and the governor are from the same senatorial district.

In actualizing this, the senator allegedly struck a deal with the camp of Adebutu following his victory at the senatorial election.

Ogun govt. ends free entry at Olumo Rock

The Ogun government says safety concerns informed its decision to introduce entry fees at the renovated Olumo Rock Tourist Complex.

Free entry to the site, which began after its relaunch, will end on Saturday, Aug. 23.

This is contained in a statement on Thursday by Mr Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to Gov. Dapo Abiodun.

The governor thanked tourists and visitors for the unprecedented turnout recorded after the reopening of the complex.

He said the turnout underscored his administration’s commitment to repositioning the rock as a world-class tourist destination.

Abiodun explained that the free access initiative aimed to help tourists rediscover and appreciate the cultural and historical significance of Olumo Rock.

“This objective has been fully achieved with thousands of visitors taking advantage of the initiative,” he said.

He, however, raised concerns about overcrowding and public safety during the surge of visitors.

“At certain points, the crowd posed risks that could have led to a stampede but for the swift intervention of security agencies and on-site personnel,” he added.

The governor therefore directed that the free entry initiative will end on Saturday, Aug. 23.

“The Ogun government regrets any inconvenience this adjustment may cause and assures the public of its commitment to a safe and memorable experience,” Abiodun said.

The commissioner emphasised the determination of the present administration to guarantee continuous treatment, care and support for People Living with HIV in the state.

To counter the potential impact of the funding stoppage, Coker said the state had implemented measures to ensure HIV test kits remained readily available.

She said the kits would be available across state hospitals and primary healthcare centres.

This, she said, would guarantee that all citizens had access to free HIV testing.

According to her, treatment facilities will remain open to support ongoing drug pick-up and the initiation of Antiretroviral medications (ARVs) for newly diagnosed patients at all 43 ART sites across Ogun.

For HIV-exposed infants, Coker assured the Early Infant Diagnosis test would continue at designated m-PIMA (Point-of-Care Immune Marker Analysis) laboratories located at Oba Ademola Maternity Hospital and General Hospital, Owode.

“The state government has set up mechanisms for feedback from healthcare workers in the field.

“This will allow for weekly assessments of the situation and timely resolution of any challenges that may arise during the suspension period.

“At this crucial moment, we will implore all concerned citizens to remain calm and support the government in its efforts towards continuous service delivery to its people.
