Labour Party sacks Peter Obi’s Director-General, Doyin Okupe

The Ogun state chapter of the Labour party, (LP) has sacked the Director General of the Peter Obi Presidential Campaign Council, Doyin Okupe from the party over intra party issues.

Okupe was sacked alongside 10 others for alleged non-financial membership status, high-handedness and financial recklessness.

This was made known by the Chairman of the party in Ogun State, Michael Ashade, in Abeokute, Ogun State capital on Thursday.

Ashade noted that Okupe and others fired breached the constitution of the Labour Party.

Ashade said Okupe has ceased to be a LP member for his “failure to meet the mandatory constitutional requirements to fulfill membership status.”

According to him, Okupe had failed to pay his membership dues since the last six months he joined the Party, saying he has therefore forfeited his membership of the Labour Party and he is no longer fit to act as the Director General of Obi’s campaign council.

He stated that the offenses of Okupe amd and the other 10 are against Article 9(3) sub(iii) and Article 9(3)xi of the LP constitution.

He accused Okupe of mismanaging the funds approved for the LP in Ogun to mobilize members for the rally held last week at Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

While notifying the LP National Chairman, Barr Julius Abure of their decision, they called on Obi to immediately appoint another DG for the PCC from the North.

Meanwhile, Doyin Okupe is yet to react to the sacking as all effort to get him to speak on the matter proved abortive.

Appeal Court reinstates Adebutu, others as Ogun PDP candidates

The Appeal Court sitting in Ibadan on Monday restored Rep. Oladipupo Adebutu as the validly elected governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun.

The appellate court also reinstated the three senatorial, nine House of Representatives and 26 House of Assembly candidates of PDP, who all emerged through the party’s primaries.

All the reinstated candidates had emerged from the party’s primaries conducted by the National Working Committee (NWC) and monitored by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalled that Justice O.O Oguntoyinbo of the Federal High Court in Abeokuta, had on Sept. 27 voided the primaries that produced Adebutu and others.

NAN reports that Justice Oguntoyinbo, in his judgment, directed the party to conduct fresh primaries within 14 days.

Dissatisfied with the judgment, the PDP, through its counsel, appealed the verdict and asked the Appellate Court to set aside the lower court’s decision.

In the same vein, Adebutu also affected by the judgment of the lower court filed an appeal CA/IB/411/411A/2022 against the judgment of Oguntoyinbo.

Justice Nimpar Yargata of the Appeal Court, in her judgment, said the trial court fell into error by nullifying the primaries, which produced Adebutu, having been conducted by the NWC of the party.

Yargata said that Taiwo Olabode Idris and others who instituted the case at the lower court were not aspirants of the party and consequently had no locus standi to challenge the outcome of the primaries.

She said that the court’s decision in APC versus Umar, which the respondents relied heavily upon in their submissions before the court, had been overtaken by the current provision of the Electoral Act, 2022.

The provision of the Electoral Act, 2022 says only aspirant can query the outcome of primaries elections.

The judge declared that only the NWC of the party and not the State Working Committee has the power to conduct primaries as spelt out in Section 221 of the 1999 Constitution.

Yargata pointed out a contradiction in the respondents’ relief of a declaration to pronounce Mr Jimi Lawal as the Governorship candidate.

The judge said that those who filed the initial suit had no stand in law to so do as the issue of primary was not a human rights matter.

She said trial court “went on a frolic on its own” by voiding the primaries of Adebutu, describing Adebutu’s appeal as meritorious.

Yargata resolved all issues in favour of Adebutu and set aside the judgment of the Federal High Court with all orders made therein.

Three earlier judgments of the same court in the appeals by the PDP and the cross appeals by the respondents in the suit filed at the lower court by Prince Segun Seriki against the PDP

Justice Folasade Ojo of the Appeal Court had earlier, in a judgment, nullified the parallel primaries conducted by Seriki and others.

She had described the primaries, which purportedly produced any other governorship candidate other than Adebutu and other candidates, as “an unlawful gathering”.

Muyiwa Obanewa, one of the Counsel to the appellant, described the various judgments as well considered, saying the coast was now cleared for Adebutu and others to continue their campaign for elections.

According to Alake,  the Ogun governor has done creditably well and deserves a second term to finish what he has started.
Oba Gbadebo noted that in the last sixteen years, governors in the state have serving two terms in office, stressing that “Governor Abiodun, “having done so well also deserves a second term”.
“The governor has done very very well. In the last 16 years, two governors have done second terms, why is our governor who has done so well will not do a second term”? Alake stated.
While appreciating the governor for completing some abandoned projects in Egbaland and helping to complete the Traditional Council’s Hall in the Alake’s Palace, called on the state government to construct the road leading to the railway station in Abeokuta.
Also speaking, the Osile of Oke-Ona Egba, Oba Adedapo Tejuoso, said the entire people and traditional rulers in Egbaland are in full support of the governor’s second term bid, while the Olowu of Owu, Oba Saka Matemilola and the Agura of Gbagura, Oba Sobur Bakre, expressed confidence that the governor would perform better if given another opportunity.
Responding, Abiodun expressed his gratitude to the monarchs for confidence they have in his capacity to move Ogun to greater heights.
He said that his administration has been fair in the distribution of projects as well as appointment to all parts of the state.
While enumerating some of the projects executed in the Ogun Central Senatorial District, the governor said plans were on to finalize the concession, operate and transfer of the supposed 250 bed hospital to an international hospital management company that would complete and manage it.
” The hospital is a world class health care facility of excellence that will attract health tourism from all over the southwest and Nigeria.
We are working assiduously on the establishment of the Kajola Dry Port and Wasimi Export and Logistics Hub which will decongest Lagos port, thereby making it more efficient and further create an enabling environment for industries and manufacturers in Ogun.

“I commend our Royal Fathers from the Egba Traditional Council who have continued to keep the flag flying for the progress and development of Egbaland and by extension, Ogun State. This endorsement of our candidature for another term of four years is another appreciation of our untiring efforts in developing all sectors of our State economy across the three senatorial districts of our state”, he pointed out.
Abiodun added that the endorsement is another affirmation of the progress the state has recorded in the last three and half years, emphasizing that the success story of his administration could not be documented without the support received from the people of Egbaland.

Man kills wife after a heated argument over ownership of property

A carpenter whose identity has been given as Segun Ebenezer, has allegedly beaten his wife, Omotosho, to death following an argument that ensued over the ownership of a school in the state.

Findings show that the couple were at home talking when it degenerated to an argument bodering on the ownership of the property.

The argument later became heated and the carpenter husband got very angry, reached for a padlock and hit his wife on the head.

Upon realizing that Omotosho had sustained a severe injury , the middle-aged husband rushed her to the Federal Medical Centre, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, for treatment.

Unfortunately, Omotosho died while receiving treatment at the hospital.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Oyeyemi confirmed the incident via a statement on Monday.

According to Oyeyemi, the husband has been arrested after the deceased’s elder sister lodged a complaint at the Kemta Police Station.

He said “The deceased was rushed to Federal Medical Centre, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, by the suspect (Ebenezer) for medical attention, but died while receiving treatment.

“Unknown to the husband, the deceased had sent a voice note to her family members, informing them that her husband used a padlock to hit her head while beating her, and that if she died, they should be aware that it was her husband that killed her.

“As soon as the voice note was played to his hearing, the husband took to his heels, having realised that his evil deed had been exposed.

“Upon the report and the recording evidence, the DPO, Kemta Division, CSP Adeniyi Adekunle, detailed his detectives to go after the husband. He was subsequently traced to Akinseku village, Abeokuta, where he was hibernating, and was promptly apprehended.”

Oyeyemi said preliminary investigation revealed that the couple’s incessant quarrel had been on the ownership of the private school the deceased built in the name of herself and the husband.

He added, “The husband who is a carpenter had wanted to take control of the school but the deceased who was an NCE graduate refused.

“This has been the reason why the suspect has always been beating the deceased (Omotosho), until the fateful day when he used the iron padlock to hit her on the head, which eventually led to her death.”

Oyeyemi said the state Commissioner of Police,  Lanre Bankole, directed that the suspect be transferred to the homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation and prosecution.

Abiodun added that  the reconstruction of the road in Obafemi Owode Local Council   after years of neglect is poised to bring about a rebound in social and economic activities in the area.

  • PDP Crisis: Wike, Makinde, others should exit the party – Adebutu

PDP Crisis: Wike, Makinde, others should exit the party – Adebutu

Embattled Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Ogun State, Hon. Ladi Adebutu has told  Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, Rotimi Makinde of Oyo state and other aggrieved PDP governors who want National Chairman Iyiorchia Ayu out of the party to exit instead.

The aggrived governors have insisted that they will not support the presidential candidate of the party unless Ayu resigns.

They claimed that , Ayu had promised that he would resign his position if a northerner emerged as the presidential candidate of the PDP.

After Atiku emerged winner of the PDP primary election held in May, Wike and his supporters have repeatedly asked Ayu to resign, even as efforts to pacify them were rebuffed.

While addressing non-indigene residents in Ogun at a gathering in Abeokuta, Adebutu stated that those who could not abide by the decision of a party are free to leave or form their own party.

The Ijebu born politician lambasted the G5 governors for causing rancour within the party.

Adebutu said: “Unlike those that don’t understand that the party is supreme, that Iyorchia Ayu is our ‘oga,’ they don’t recognize that he has the power to hire and fire, we accept his leadership.

“By the Supreme Court judgements severally pronounced, those that don’t like your party has a few choices, they can either abide, go and form their own party or get out! We have chosen to abide by and obey Ayu’s dictates.

“We agree he is our chairman. We agree that Hon. Sikirulahi Ogundele is our leader in Ogun and he is representing Iyorchia Ayu. We agree to submit ourselves to the National Working Committee of the party. Those that don’t abide should go and form their own party.”

Addressing Igbo, Hausa, Igede, Ijaw, Idoma and others who were out to declare support for Atiku and other PDP candidates, Adebutu maintained that Nigerians remain one big family regardless of tribe or religion.

“We are one Nigeria because we are one family speaking different languages, but we are happy together. May we continue to live together as one family and be happy.

“We are happy that we have somebody joining us together, His Excellency, Waziri Atiku Abubakar. It is not in dispute that he is our leader and we shall all work hard to make him the president of Nigeria. He is the unifier. We have a duty to do him proud and do ourselves proud. We must continue to promote his ideologies,” Adebutu said.

Speaking on the crisis rocking the PDP in Ogun, the former lawmaker told the gathering that: “I want to reassure you that all the shenanigans of these naysayers, of these terrible human beings, have failed in their mission to disrupt our party. Let us stay united, don’t be distracted. They have a purpose to distract us. They have worked for their pay, they have worked for their purpose, they have done their job.”

He added: “Let us be focused, in the next few weeks we will be free; and when we are free, we will continue our journey.”

He accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of failing to provide security, good governance and food for the masses.

“The economy is failing every day, we are hungrier by the day, and they are weaponising poverty. They claim that the foreign exchange is crashing, therefore we have to buy things at more exorbitant prices and because of that, there is inflation. Our people are suffering from hunger, but I tell you, relief has come. Just hang in there for four months, in four months’ time, we shall get salvation, we shall get a renewal,” he said.
