  • Ogun State Governor, Abiodun meets with Tinubu in France

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun has visited the former Governor of Lagos State and the presidential flagbearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, in Paris, France.

Recall that Tinubu went to appeal to Dapo Abiodun in Ogun state to seek his support prior to the APC special convention.

Abiodun took to his social media handles to share pictures of him and Tinubu with the caption “I spent quality time with Tinubu, the national leader of the APC”

“Spent quality time with our party leader and Presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to rub minds on numerous party and National issues,” Abiodun said.

  • Obasanjo rides tricycle, tasks youths on self employment

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Saturday engaged in commercial tricycle business as he rode and picked a male  passenger around Kuto area of Abeokuta.

A statement by Mr Kehinde Akinyemi, Special Assistant to Obasanjo on Media, stated that he (Obasanjo) rode from his Pent House residence at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), through Kuto area, amidst greetings and jubilation from  shocked onlookers along the road.

Akinyemi explained that the ride was meant to demonstrate the safety of the means of transportation and to encourage the youths to be hardworking and embrace self -employment.

“The president, along the route, stopped and picked a male passenger to demonstrate that riding in the tricycle is safe if used properly and for people to learn how to start small and grow their craft,” Akinyemi said.

“When I recently gave out tricycles to 85 young people across the nation, I received some feedback that they were sort of  inappropriate gifts and some  wondered if they were the best and suitable for young people.

“I have embarked on riding the tricycle to demonstrate to people that there is  nothing bad in riding it and using same for commercial purpose.

“With tricycles and other small scale businesses, youths can be self employed and ultimately, become economically independent.

“There is nothing wrong in young people starting small. The Keke is secure and safe when handled professionally and with discipline.

“It is a wrongful societal classification to consider all keke riders as miscreants and this has led  many young people to avoid  the virtue of starting small business.

“In fact, you can plan your business the way you wish and earn income that you can deploy to other investments.

“If you are able to get a second one, you can give that to someone else. So you become self-employed and you have also employed somebody.

“I remain committed  to the economic empowerment of young people through initiatives that can generate employment. This is how we can increasingly address unemployment in Nigeria.

“I have always have passion for youth empowerment and employment. When I started establishing farms, do you think I can run the farm alone?

“Some of the people I employed on my farms are PhD. holders.

“There are Veterinary Doctors among them, Agric economists and many more that are well educated, including some of my children that have Doctorate Degrees who  are still working with me.

“The other time I checked the people that are working with us directly  on our various establishments, we have over 5,000 and most of them are youths.

“I have always had passion for youths because there is no substitute for employment,” Obasanjo was quoted as saying after the ride.

The male passanger who identified himself as Lamidi, was said to have expressed delight at the experience, saying that, “this will remain memorable in my life.”

  • Ogun workers embark on indefinite strike over unpaid benefits

Civil servants in Ogun state have been directed  by  organised labour to immediately embark on an indefinite action starting from Tuesday June 28, 2022.

The leadership of the organised labour, comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC) and Joint Negotiating Committee (JNC), declared the strike while addressing workers at the Arcade ground of the state Secretariat, Okemosan, Abeokuta.

The workers had initially issued a seven-day-ultimatum to the state Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun on June 7 on issues bothering on the non-remittance of the 21 months workers’ deduction.

They also hammered on other issues bothering them in the state like contributory pension, review of Ogun Pension law and immediate implementation of consequential adjustments on minimum pension as mandated by the 1999 constitution.

The workers gathered and sang solidarity songs against the government while berating the governor for failing to honour the agreement contained in the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in 2020.

Addresing the workers, the Chairman of NLC in the state, Comrade Emmanuel Bankole, said the strike had become imperative following several failed attempts to meet the governor over their plight on the issue.

Bankole who was accompanied by the Chairman of TUC, Mr Akeem Lasisi, and the Chairman of JNC, Mr Isa Olude, directed all the workers to stay away from work.

According to him, the strike which will take effect from 12 a.m. Tuesday will be a total and indefinite strike, adding that there is no going back until their demands are met by the governor.

“We are here today to take our destiny in our own hands. The leadership is ready.

“We must start a new beginning; we must tell them (government) that we are workers and not slaves. The time is now; a stop must be put to this.

“Our future and the future of the workers of Ogun state is in great jeopardy.

“Governance is a serious business and whoever that is not ready for it, I think it is time we told such persons to go home.

“Having given them enough time, but they are too busy to attend to us, maybe if we go home for some time, they will have time to attend to our matter.

“There is no going back. We have given them a long rope to draw.

“It is my opinion and my conviction that Ogun state workers are saying that we should embark on a full blown strike.

“We are embarking on indefinite strike from 12 midnight; let all the workers stay back at home. The implication is that nobody is expected at work tomorrow (June 28).

“Anyone who reports for duty tomorrow (Tuesday) is a traitor and it has never been well with a traitor,” Bankole declared.

  • Some Southerners are betraying the South- Senator Shettima

Former Borno State Governor, Senator Kashim Shettima has revealed that some persons in the southern part of the country are working against power rotation  and zoning.

Shettima described them as political Judas Iscariot, saying they are working against their own region.

There has been an unwritten agreement that states that power must rotate among the geo-political zones in the country and the South are laying claims to that to advocate for zoning ahead 2023 election

However, with the emergence of Vice President Atiku as the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), some members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have also suggested that giving the APC ticket to a northerner was the only way to defeat the PDP in 2023.

Shettima, while on a visit with a presidential aspirant, Bola Tinubu, to Ogun State, expressed concern that some Judas Iscariots from the South were “hellbent on becoming spoilers” to scuttle the chances of the South to produce the next president.

Addressing the power rotation issues, Shettima posited  that the enemy of Southern Nigeria is often not the Northern Nigeria but men and women of its own stock, the Judas Iscariot of the Southern race who are ever ready to play the second fiddle.

The Senator said some presidential aspirants from Ogun could not garner more than 10 votes at the APC presidential primary election, stating that such aspirants would end up becoming spoilers.

According to him “The enemy of Southern Nigeria is often not the Northern Nigeria, but men and women of its own stock, the Judas Iscariot of the Southern race who are ever ready to play the second fiddle.

“We are living in very interesting times and for those of us in the Asiwaju team, we are moved by the forest of ideas and the realization that what this country needs is a unifying leader who has neither ethnic nor religious agenda and who is not bound by toxic regional solidarity and yet known for exemplary qualitative leadership and if you look around, the contenders and the pretenders for the Presidency of this country, there is no one that the cap fits better than the gentleman seated here.

“In our current dispensation, the dynamics have changed, there is no politician in the APC with the brand name, first name recognition, the track record, the passion for excellence that can stand toe-to-toe and even overshadow Atiku Abubakar better than Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“He was viciously witch-hunted, harassed and intimidated by the PDP controlled Federal government and that was the time he laid the foundation for modern Lagos.

“So I call on you in the spirit of oneness and for the collective interest of the Southwest who supported us when we needed him, that support intervenes on your sons who are hell-bent on becoming spoilers. It is better and more honourable.

“Ogun, you are presenting four presidential candidates and you and I know that some cannot get more than ten votes, but they are going to be spoilers, but I can assure you that on his (Tinubu’s) mandate we are going to stand.”

  • 2023: Why Osinbajo should be next president – Alake of Egbaland

2023: Why Osinbajo should be next president – Alake of Egbaland

The Alake of Egbaland, in Ogun, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo says Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo has paid his dues and deserves to be elected Nigeria’s president in 2023.

Gbadebo spoke on Tuesday in his Abeokuta, when he hosted the vice-president who was on a courtesy visit.

Osinbajo, accompanied by Gov. Dapo Abiodun, was in Ogun as part of his consultations with stakeholders ahead of the 2023 presidential election in which he had declared interest to run.

The traditional ruler said that Osinbajo had creditably acquitted himself in service to the nation and was eminently qualified to be the next president.

“Every president from this part of the country that has passed through here has succeeded in becoming the president.

“Every time the vice-president has passed here and gone for something competitive, he has always won; this will not be an exception.

“By the grace of God, our vice-president has paid his dues; he has gone through serving others and has been winning colours all the way.

“He had the same subjects in high school like I had and won laurels.

“In the university, through his research work, and in the legal practice, he has been most outstanding.

“Why should we not ask you for just one more position to the glory of God, and for the benefit of all Nigerians and you will say `no’? Certainly, not here,’’ the traditional ruler of Osinbajo’s home-state said.

He prayed that Osinbajo’s next visit to the palace would be a “thank you’’ visit after his victory at the poll.

Earlier, Osinbajo said he was in the palace to brief the traditional ruler on the progress that he had made so far in the pursuit.

“Of course, Kabiyesi knows that on April 11, I formally declared my intension to run for the position of President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“And after I did, I have consulted with our governors; consulted with our legislators and I have been in one or two states.

“Today is very special; today, I am formally reporting progress to our Kabiyesi, the Alake of Egba Land, my own dear father, whom I know, has been behind several of the other journeys in this political terrain.

“I want to say that our state has never been short of notable personalities in leadership,’’ he said.

Osinbajo said that when he was called upon to serve as vice-president of Nigeria, it was purely providential as he was not a politician then.

He said that President Muhammadu Buhari had been extremely fair to him in various ways and had exposed him to every aspect of governance.

“He has kept no secret of governance away from me; he has made sure that I have seen everything that needs to be seen.

“Again, I had the good fortune of serving as acting president on many occasions and on each of those occasions, he would tell me that as far he is concerned, I am the president of Nigeria; `do not refer anything to me.’

“Do not call me; just take the steps that you need to take, I will not question your discretion in any way and he never did.’’

The vice-president said that in the past seven-and-a-half years of serving as vice-president, he had been able to see for himself and observe for himself what had been done right.

He said he had observed what could have been done better and various other things.

“I think that when the opportunity arose for me to decide whether or not to run as president of Nigeria, I had only one question to ask myself.

“That question was whether I would be faithful to my oath to the Federal Republic of Nigeria and to the people of Nigeria to serve with all my heart and to serve with my entire mind.

“That is the only question I had to ask myself because I have served previously; I have served others in various capacities and I have given everything.

“I served under Prince Bola Ajibola, Judge of the World Court at The Hague; I served when he was the Attorney-General of the Federation; I was one of the only four advisers in the entire federation at the time.

“I was his adviser for five years; when he went to the World Court, I was with him there for at least, a couple of years; I served as Attorney-General of Lagos State for eight years.

“Of course, I served in United Nations; I have served for the past seven-and-half years as vice-president.

“I want to say that every one of those people who I served in their most difficult moments did not regret it. I am not talking about when everything was going well because that is when you know your friends.

“In their most difficult moments; in moments even when their jobs where threatened; in moments, sometimes when their lives were threatened, I was with them.

“Sometimes, I was the only one standing with them; I cannot go into details for confidentiality reasons, but that is the truth,’’ Osinbajo said.

He urged the traditional ruler to support him in his quest to better the lives and fortunes of Nigerians.

The vice-president also paid courtesy visits to the Akarigbo of Ijebu-Remo and the Olu of Ilaro, both traditional rulers in Ogun.

The woman had reported that, while she was away for a business, she was called on the phone by a good Samaritan informing her that her landlord had “tied her children’s hands and legs like goats, dragging them on the ground with the rope after he had beaten them with cable wire.”

It was gathered that one of the twins is currently on admission at Ijebu Ode General Hospital due to injury he sustained while he was being dragged on the ground by the suspect.

  • 85 year-old man murdered over land tussle in Ogun State

85 year-old man murdered over land tussle in Ogun State

An aged man whose age has been put at 85 years has been reportedly murdered by some persons said to be his family members.

A man and his son have been fingered in the death of the 85-year -old man

The deceased had alredy informed his children of a meeting with another family member in a neighbourhood.

It was further gathered that in the evening, the children of the late old man became worried when their father did not return home from Asipa, a village located after Opeji, in Odeda Local Government Area of the state.

The children of the deceased searched everywhere in the village but didn’t see their father.

On enquiry, Mufatiu’s wife was said to have “lied” that the deceased had gone to a neighbouring village.

The children later discovered their father’s body beside a small river, wrapped with a rusty roofing sheet.

It was discovered that the man bled to death as a result of a head injury he sustained.

It’s alleged that he must have been hit in the head with a stick as he bled to death.

The eldest son of the deceased Sulaiman Oladiran said his father told him he was going to Asipa alongside a relation known as Alfa Mufia.

“My father told me around 10am on Saturday that he was going to Asipa with a man we have known as his relative, Alfa Mufa. He said they have a programme there. On Saturday night, we did not see him.

“I called our brother, who is the Baale of Asipa, Chief Kehinde Omirinde, and told him about it. He told me to wait until the next day before taking any steps to locate him.

“When we did not see him until 12pm on Sunday, I called the Baale again; he said we should not wait any longer. So, we went to Asipa.

“At Asipa, we met Ibrahim Mufa’s wife, who told us to calm down, saying our father went to the next village, that he would soon return. But with the way she was nervous, I suspected all was not well. So I told my two other brothers.

“We saw Ibrahim Mufa coming from the river. We asked him where our father was and he said we should be patient. Later he said we should handle him gently or kill him. We just insisted on seeing our father. He started running away.

“At this point, the villagers have come out with sticks and cutlasses to attack us. Two of us ran away, but one of us was seized by the villagers.

“As we were running to Abeokuta with our motorbike to call the police, we met operatives of OP-MESA at Opeji. We told them what happened and they escorted us back to the village.

“When we returned to the village, they had already beaten my brother, Kazeem to stupor. The OP-MESA men arrested Alfa Mufatiu and handed him over to the police at Bode Olude.

“The following day, the police accompanied us to Asipa and Alfa Mufa took us to where our father was killed by the river. We observed that he was hit with something on the head. We saw blood on the mat they said he slept on. At the riverside where his corpse was dumped, we saw that his head was wrapped with a cloth full of blood.

“We took his body on Monday. It was already decomposing. We want Nigerians to assist us. We seek justice.”

Upon interrogation it was gathered that the deceased and some family members were involved in land tussle.

When contacted The Ogun state police command said it will look into the matter before commenting on it.
