Ogun announces new date for school resumption, asks parents to sign undertaking

The Ogun State Government has announced a new date for 2nd term resumption of primary, secondary and technical schools in the State.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the State Government has also asked parents and guardians to sign an undertaking before their children and wards could be allowed in schools.

Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology in the State, Prof Abayomi Arigbabu made this known in a statement on Sunday.

According to the statement, instead of the earlier announced January 4th resumption date, schools are now to resume on Monday, January 10, 2022.

Arigbabu said the new date became necessary due to a series of pre-resumption activities put up by the Education Ministry to further reposition education in the state.

The statement had it that it was necessary for parents and guardians to sign the undertaking that they would willingly abide by all laid down rules and regulations in schools in the State, following recent occurrences.

Recently, some schools in Ogun State went under attack as parents and students hired thugs to brutalise teachers, who must have punished their children for any unruly behaviour.

Also, some videos went viral recently wherein young schoolgirls were seen smoking and videoing themselves.

To put an end to any deviant act in schools and technical colleges, the Ministry of Education asked students and their parents or guardians to visit their schools between January 4 and 10 to sign an undertaking of willingness to abide by the laid down rules and regulations while also supporting and enforcing discipline in schools.

I learnt kidnapping from watching actor Zubby Michael in movies – 23-yr-old suspect

A man who was arrested by the police in Ogun state for allegedly kidnapping a six-year-old child, has said he learned the act of kidnapping from watching Nollywood Actor Zubby Michael’s movies.

The suspect identified as Ayobamidele Kudus Ayodele allegedly kidnapped the pupil from his school in Ojo Alaba area of Lagos, on November 16, 2021 and kept him hostage for four days until a ransom of over half a million was paid for his release.

“Zubby Michael is my favorite Nollywood actor and he is good at k!dnapping roles. I decided to try out some of the methods used by Zubby to k!dnap children and adults in the movies.

“I started by visiting several schools around Ojo to see the possibility of picking children without anyone noticing. On November 16, 2021, I visited a school close to Alaba Market and stayed by the gate.

“I saw two pupils coming to school. One of them was holding a cane. I stopped them and started chatting with them. I took the cane from one of them and asked where he bought it. He mentioned the place but I told him to take me there. I whispered into his ears that I would buy him chocolates and biscuits.

“To avoid drawing attention to myself, I took the boy to an hotel in Ilogbo Eremi, Lagos. I called his father and demanded for additional N2 million. We spent four days there before his family was able to raise N550,000. The boy stayed calm throughout because he had access to my phone which had several games.

“I am sorry for causing his family so much pa!n. I am not a cu!tist or an armed robber. I do not have a gang. I just trained myself by watching Zubby Michael. My parents trained me very well, I was just impatient and greedy,” the suspect narrated.

Mother, child burnt as tanker explodes in Abeokuta

A mother and her child were burnt beyond recognition on Sunday at Lafenwa, Abeokuta, when a petrol-laden tanker exploded and went up in flames.

Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun State, Mr Ahmed Umar confirmed this in Abeokuta.

Umar said the tanker driver was manoeuvring through bad portions of the road when the vehicle fell on its side.

He said also that the FRSC, the police, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and the Fire Service were on ground, adding that injured victims were taken to the hospital.

“The two deceased were burnt beyond recognition. An angry mob who threw stones at security agents at the scene also destroyed a Fire engine.

“The police were able to calm the situation and few of the hoodlums were arrested,’’ Umar said.

The spokesman of the state’s Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps, Mr Babatunde Akinbiyi, had earlier confirmed the incident to newsmen.

Akinbiyi said the tanker went up in flames because of the uncooperative attitude of people around the incident who were scooping fuel and engaging in other unwholesome acts which sparked the fire.

He said the tanker had an axle problem and overturned at about 4:45 a.m. while making its way around Lafenwa, spilling its content on the road.

He advised the general public to vacate the area, saying that TRACE, the police, the FRSC and the Fire Service were all on ground to put the situation under control.

Several shops in the area were also destroyed by the fire.

  • Banks, shops, other businesses shut down for days in Ogun State after receiving letters of attacks from robbers

Banks, shops, other businesses shut down for days in Ogun State after receiving letters of attacks from robbers

Business activities in the Ijebu-Ode area of Ogun State have been brought to a standstill since Monday following letters of notification of attacks allegedly written and sent to the area by armed robbers.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that the fear of the imminent attacks has forced banks, shops and other businesses to remain under lock and key.

However, TNG gathered that the development is beginning to take adverse effects on residents whose business needs have been left unattended to for days now.

Despite this incident, the banks maintained that they would only resume operations if the Ogun State Government assists the police with Armoured Personnel Carriers to be mounted close to their branches.

Reacting to the development, some residents of Ijebu-Ode lamented that they have been travelling to places like Sagamu, Abeokuta, and others to deposit or withdraw money.

But the Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said there is no reason for fear of attacks, saying the police had assured the banks and residents of their safety.

“They are just entertaining fear where there is none; even the Area Commander and the DPOs have assured them that there is no need to fear,” he said.

“Why should they be afraid because there are no Armoured Personnel Carriers (APC)? Even if the APCs are working, is it not the police that will operate them?

“The police are on the ground to provide adequate security of lives and properties; they are the ones that know why they are entertaining fear. We have assured them of their protection and our presence everywhere in Ijebu-Ode and everywhere in Ogun State. There is no reason to be panicking.

“Despite all these assurances, they still doubt the sincerity of the police, I don’t know the motive behind this,” he added.

TNG could not ascertain at the time of filing this report if the Governor Dapo Abiodun-led Ogun State Government has officially reacted to the development in that axis of the state.

  • Why we invaded Abeokuta hotel to arrest 56 Internet fraudsters – EFCC

Why we invaded Abeokuta hotel to arrest 56 Internet fraudsters – EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has clarified why it’s operatives invaded a hotel based in Abeokuta, Ogun State to arrest 56 Internet fraudsters.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the EFCC made the clarification on Tuesday on the heels of an operation by the Ibadan Zonal Command of the agency.

Following the arrest of the arrest of the 56 suspected internet fraudsters, the Commission has warned hotel owners across the country to be wary of allowing internet fraudsters to congregate or hibernate around their facilities.

TNG reports the suspects arrested included Garfar Olamide Taiwo, Fadimaye Habeeb, Badmus Idris, Samuel Victor, Seun Fuad, Alli Isaac, Oyeleke Mubarak, Bolu Soetan, Koleosho Eniola, Saheed Abidemi, Olaewe Tosin, Ayedun Idowu, Oniyitan Ayomide, Akinlabi Precious, Gbadebo Sultan, Adeyemi Habeeb, Balogun Hassan, Sulaimon Ayub Damilare, and Akinsola Usman.

Others are; Ajibola Femi Sodiya, Ridwan Alani, Olusesi Lanre, Eniatimo Oludare, Taiwo Opeyemi, Akindele Kabiru Johnson Hammed, Idowu Gabriel, Adekanmi Adejumo, Peter Babatunde, Okeowo Sunday, Abudu Habeeb, Sabair Rasaq, Ademuyiwa Basit, Toriola Opeyemi, Babayode Abiola, Agbaje Habeeb, Sorinola Oluwatobiloba, Abiodun Elegbede, Kayode Daniel ,Lawal Alabi, Oyewole Korede, Aberuagba Gafar, Adekunle Emmanuel, Okunade Azeez, and Ojediran Sodiq.

According to the EFCC, they were apprehended at their hideouts which happened to be popular hotels in the ancient city.

TNG reports the EFCC as saying the operation was based on verified intelligence backed by weeks of surveillance, and that it was nearly frustrated by the hotel owners who employed various antics, including shutting down power supply, to enable some of the suspects to escape arrest.

“Despite the lack of cooperation by the hotel owners, the operatives demonstrated professionalism in ensuring that no one was hurt nor property damaged during the operations, contrary to the narrative in a section of the media.

“Nevertheless, the action of the hoteliers amounts to deliberate sabotage and obstruction of law enforcement officers, an offence punishable by Section 38 (2) (b) of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (Establishment) Act, 2004.

“The Commission has observed a worrying pattern of cold complicity by hospitality entrepreneurs who appear to be hands-in-gloves with suspected fraudsters by housing them over long spells and making internet facilities available to them.

“While the argument is being made in certain quarters that hoteliers as business people have no means of determining who a fraudster is before allowing them to lodge in their facilities that position runs counter to the law.

“Section 3 of the Advance Fee Fraud And Other Related Offences Act, 2006 provides for a prison term of between five and 15 years without option of fine for any person who permits his premises to be used for any offence under the Act.

“EFCC will therefore not tolerate situations where hotel owners or managers not only permit fraudsters to use their facilities but also deliberately shield them from arrest by frustrating law enforcement on such premises.

“If the hoteliers are not enablers of the alleged crimes, as some have demonstrated by offering information to the Commission, they are under obligation to cooperate with law enforcement officers carrying out their lawful duties. To act otherwise would tantamount to willingly becoming enablers to fraud,” the Commission stated.

TNG reports ten exotic cars, dozens of mobile phones, laptops and several incriminating documents were recovered from the suspected fraudsters arrested in Abeokuta.

“They will be arraigned in court as soon as the investigation is concluded,” EFCC stated.
