  • NCC storms Ogun, shuts down Arcelor for operating illegally

Officials of Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) on Thursday shut the premises of an internet service provider in Abeokuta for allegedly operating illegally.

The officials, led by Mr Chukwuemeka Obi, the Principal Manager, Compliance and Enforcement unit, disrupted activities at the cafe located inside Government Reservation Area, Ibara, Abeokuta.

Workers were forced to leave their offices by armed policemen after which the place was put under lock and key.

Speaking to newsmen, Obi said the commission acted in compliance with Section 31 of the NCC Act.

He explained that the Act prohibited any company from operating any telecommunications service in Nigeria without the required authorisation.

Obi said that the internet provider, with company name “Arcelor”, had been operating illegally.

“As far back as 2016, we discovered they were providing services to commercial outfits in Abeokuta, after which we wrote them to tell them they’re operating illegally.

“We asked them to come, since then till now, they’ve not come to do what they’re supposed to do. That was what necessitated this enforcement action today.

“This is like a lesson to other operators out there. We know there are so many of them operating illegally.

‘‘You cannot operate telecommunications services illegally in any part of Nigeria if you are not authorised by the NCC,” he said.

Obi said that the commission would continuously monitor all telecommunication service providers on a daily basis.

“It’s a continuous process. Anywhere we find anyone operating illegally, we’ll follow the law. NCC is good at following the law, it took us two years to do this,” he said.

The NCC principal manager, however, warned that if their seal was broken, the company would be severely punished and prosecuted.

“When we seal, the law gives us a chance to prosecute them, but what we’ve done is to give them a chance to come and regularise.

“They can start regularising their licence immediately. Normally, we give them 14 days to do what they’re supposed to do.

‘‘If they’ve done what they’re supposed to do, definitely, we’ll unseal them, but that has to be done on the stability of their request.

‘‘And if they don’t come forward within the two weeks, their office remains shut,’’ he said.

Arcelor is providing internet service to more than 300 clients.

  • Police debunks herdsmen attack along Lagos/Ibadan expressway as rumour

Investigations by the Nigerian Police have shown that the alleged attack by herdsmen along Lagos/Ibadan expressway is false, baseless, and “lie from pit of hell fire”.

The Ogun State Police Command in a statement signed by Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Abimbola Oyeyemi, for the Commissioner of Police, revealed this, and said the security alert being broadcasted on social media, especially on WhatsApp, is false and baseless.

Read full press release by the Ogun State Police Command below:

“The attention of Ogun State Police Command has been once again drawn to an alleged attack by herdsmen along Lagos/Ibadan expressway as well as an anonymous security alert letter written by a faceless student group urging students and members of public not to travel along that route. The faceless group also posted a simulated voice recording on social media where some people are crying and pleading with their alleged attackers not to kill them.

“The Command wouldn’t have dignify the disgruntled elements with a response but in order to allay the fears of public, the true security situation along that axis has to be made known to all and sundry.

“To start with, there is no any attack by herdsmen or any other group in all the stretch of Express Ways across and within Ogun State, we make bold to say that the alleged attack been posted on social media is a lie from pit of hell fire been peddled by those who are not happy with the peaceful atmosphere in Ogun State. The picture attached to the post is a picture of an accident which occurred about Eight years ago exactly on the 31st of July 2010 to be precised; while the purported voice recording was a stage managed one.

“The Lagos/Ibadan express road is one of the busiest roads in Nigeria and the Command is not oblivious of that fact, for that reason, there has been massive deployment of Police operatives from FSARS, Anti-Kidnapping/cultist unit, PMF as well as Conventional Policemen on surveillance and monitoring operatives and patrols to ward off any act of criminal activities on that road.

“In as much as there is freedom of speech as guaranteed by the constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria, such freedom does not licensed anybody to be peddling dangerous rumours that can cause breach of public peace. In view of that, the Command is investigating those behind the senseless rumour with the view of bringing them to justice as they can be best described as enemy of the State.

“We hereby enjoined the good and peace loving people of the State to discountenance the rumour and go about their lawful businesses without any fear of harassment or attack from anybody or group. Any suspicious movement or gathering should be reported to the Police and other sister security agencies as quick as possible and quick and adequate response will be accorded such report.”

  • Ogun State owes N103b local, foreign debts – Amosun

Ogun State owes N103b local, foreign debts – Amosun

Governor Ibikunle Amosun has said the state owes a total of N103bn in both domestic and foreign debts.

The Governor disclosed this while addressing teachers at the Arcade ground, Oke-Mosan Governor’s Office, Abeokuta, the state capital during the 2017 edition of World’s Teachers Day.

He explained that the N103b debt included N48.9 billion inherited from his predecessor, Gbenga Daniel, and a foreign loan of about N40 billion incurred by the state since the days of Olabisi Onabanjo.

Amosun also justified the recent loan request of $350 from the World Bank, saying it is only rational to take the loan at 1% interest rate in the interest of state development.

According to him, in a manner akin to the experience of Lagos and Edo states, the loan would be beneficial to his successors as his administration may not access over 10% of the loan before its expiration.

Amosun said: “clearly, every debt is about 103 billion including foreign and local. Even if you take the foreign loan which was about 40 billion, I didn’t take the loan, our forebears did.

If those ones are grants with 0.5%, they are just like ‘dash’, when people are shouting that we are taking loans, World Bank is not stupid, what they probably have is $1billion and they are giving Ogun State alone 35% of that, $350m dollars at 1% or 1.5%.

That money is because of love we have for Ogun State, if not, I would have stopped the loan because of these talks, but this is the time, I will not be the administration that will collect this money, at best, we will be given 10% next years because world bank has procedures.

Officially, Ogun State is owing little over 70billion, the one that is local that can be ascribed to this administration. How can anybody that is rational see a loan of 1% and you’re saying ‘don’t take’, they clearly do not know, and you can’t give what you don’t have.

My predecessor officially said they left N49.8 billion dollars, that was what was left in the handover note if all that we’ve added to it is about $20 billion, can’t you see what we’ve done?”

He reiterated that he opted to repay the bailout facility for 10 years as against 20 years proposed by the Federal Government because of his financial re-engineering in the state.

  • Another Yoruba actor passes on

Just when the Nigerian movie industry is trying to come to terms with the death of Adebayo Faleti , Nollywood has been thrown into mourning following the death of Rotimi Ayinde a.k.a Abu Olododo.

A colleague of Ayinde, Waheed Ijaduade, broke the news of his death to the attention of the public in a statement posted on Facebook on Monday.

Ijaduade termed Ayinde’s death as sudden. He said he had a short discussion with the deceased on Sunday night.

According to him:“We chatted for a while on that night. He even asked me about the outcome of a summit that I attended in Lagos. We talked about other things and we agreed to meet on Monday or Tuesday before I went to bed. I went to his residence to see him the following day (Monday) as agreed only to learn that he was dead.

“He never told me that he was sick. He appeared to be quite healthy when I spoke with him on the phone. His death remains a mystery to me” Ijaduade said.

  • Gov. Amosun disowns phoney telephone conversation

Gov. Amosun disowns phoney telephone conversation

The Governor of Ogun State, Ibikunle Amosun has disowned a phoney conversation circulating on social media purporting to be a phone call between him and Alhaji Kashim Shettima, the Governor of Borno State.

In what is turning out to be one of the most vicious and ungodly acts, meant to further create confusion in the land, a 20:38 (twenty minutes and thirty eight seconds) telephone conversation, purportedly between His Excellency, the Governor of Ogun State, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, and his Borno State counterpart, His Excellency Governor Kashim Shettima, wherein issues focusing on, but not limited to, the current Biafran agitation were discussed, is presently making the rounds on social media.

According to a statement by the Ogun State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Otunba Dayo Adeneye, the alleged conversation never took place and is the handiwork of mischief makers and agent provocateurs bent on heating the polity and setting people against themselves.

The voice in the forgery which they paraded as that of Governor Amosun is not that of His Excellency and a simple search on the internet for any speech by him, would convince those who are not familiar with his voice that the producers of the audio recording did a poor and unintelligent imitation.

The pedlars of such falsehood appear to have a wild scheme which appears to be part of what may be turning out to be the wider script, by some unpatriotic elements, aimed at further causing divisions in Nigeria. It is meant to feed into, as well as further exacerbate the already highly combustible wave of agitation in the land. This evil plot will not work. Indeed this is not the first time some unpatriotic and vile individuals would spread falsehood about the person of Governor Amosun.

Amosun is committed to peaceful co-existence of all groups in Nigeria and will not engage in conversations that would threaten the peace and unity of Nigeria. He therefore counseled politicians and other public office seekers to play politics without bitterness and dwell more on things that unite us rather than those that seek to divide us.

The Ogun State Government has assured that it will continue to liaise with relevant authorities to ensure that the late acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, Chief Moshood Kashimawo Abiola, is immortalised by the Federal Government.

The Secretary to the State Government, Taiwo Adeoluwa, gave the assurance at a meeting with the representatives of the Abiola family in his office in Abeokuta, on yesterday.

He said, “Abiola deserves the honour and recognition because he paid the supreme price for the emergence of democratic rule in the country.”

He said apart from monuments, including the June 12 Cultural Centre, Abeokuta, and the state polytechnic named after the late business mogul, the government believed that the late politician deserved more honours from the Federal Government.

The SSG said Governor Ibikunle Amosun’s administration had consistently celebrated the June 12 anniversary in appreciation of the legendary contributions of Abiola to democratic development in the country, adding that government would continue to accord his family due recognition.

He said, “Since we came on board, every June 12, we do have a formal interaction with the family of Chief MKO Abiola. This is an exercise by the state government to sustain people’s awareness and keep the memory of the late sage alive.”

Also speaking, the daughter of the late politician, who is the Special Adviser to Amosun on trade and investment, Mrs Hafsat Abiola-Costello, acknowledged the contributions of the state governor to the family.

  • Boundary crisis: Ondo, Ogun govts meet to settle disputes

The Ogun and Ondo State Governments on Thursday met to resolve the boundary issues between the people of Atijere in Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo and Makun-Omi in Waterside Local Government Area of Ogun.

The meeting, which took place at the Government House in Abeokuta, had in attendance the deputy governor of Ondo State, Chief Agboola Ajayi, and his counterpart in Ogun, Mrs Yetunde Onanuga.

Briefing newsmen after the meeting, Ajayi gave an assurance that people living in both communities would soon realise that they had no reason to fight each other.

Ajayi said that the informal meeting was only to discuss issues affecting the two communities.

The deputy governor promised to invite his Ogun counterpart to a stakeholders’ meeting in Ondo State where all the traditional rulers in both communities would have the opportunity to discuss issues amicably.

We are one. We will resolve all the issues. We are expecting the boundary commission to come and conduct the survey which had been done in Ogun, and we will amicably agree and come to live together.

The two communities have done so many things together.

The two governors of our states are credible leaders, so I believe when the community leaders see smiles on television, they will see reason that we mean well,” he said

Earlier, Onanuga, who also affirmed that the meeting was not official, explained that “the sister states deemed it fit to hold a meeting to discuss some of the boundary issues.’’

She noted that the two states had resolved to continue with the peaceful coexistence they had been enjoying in the past.

This is not an official meeting. It is an informal one at the instance of his Excellency, the Deputy Governor of Ondo State and Chairman of the Ondo State Boundary Commission.

Their administration just assumed office, the two sister states deemed it fit to hold a boundary meeting to resolve some of the issues we have between our two states and that was why the meeting was held.

I can authoritatively tell you that we have resolved to go back and talk to our people to live happily,” she said.

Onanuga said the two states would work with the National Boundary Commission to conduct a survey in Ondo State similar to what was done in Ogun after which a meeting would hold to resolve the outstanding issues.
