    Student dies after allegedly being flogged ‘I64’ strokes in Ogun

    A student named Ariyo Monday has died after allegedly being flogged “164” strokes by a teacher at Obada Grammar School in Imeko Afon Local Government Area of Ogun State. 

    Nigerian activist JustAdetoun, in a video shared on Instagram, explained that the boy’s teacher had brought a dustbin to class and told the students not to break it. 

    Ariyo then jokingly said that the trash can was purchased with student funds, which angered the teacher. 

    The teacher was said to have reported to the principal, who, in turn, authorized the punishment.

    In her account, JustAdetoun claimed that Ariyo was subjected to 164 strokes of the cane, after which he collapsed.

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) observed from the video that Ariyo was hospitalized and seemed to be in grave pain.

    Confirming the incident, Police spokesperson Omolola Odutola clarified that the punishment involved 24 strokes of the cane and 162 frog jumps.

    Odutola noted that the student passed away at the Federal Medical Centre in Abeokuta, with his body now at Ayetoro mortuary for an autopsy.

    She said, The incident happened on October 15, 2024. The deceased was asked to do 162 frog jumps and was given 24 strokes of the cane. He was rushed to FMC Idi-Aba for medical attention, and he died today [Friday].”

    Gunmen abduct Nigerian journalist in Ogun state

    Some yet-to-be-identified gunmen have reportedly kidnapped the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of TMC News, Oshibanjo Oluwatosin, who is a journalist and human rights activist, in Ogun State.

    According to reports, the armed men reportedly stormed the journalist’s residence in Ijebu-Ode on Tuesday and whisked him away.

    A source told SaharaReporters on Wednesday that his phone had been switched off. Efforts to locate him have been unsuccessful.

    “A formal complaint has been filed with the Police Area Commander and Igbeba Police Station, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State.

    “Please contact the nearest police station or call 08078608667 with any information,” the source said.

    Confirming the abduction, the state police command Public Relations Officer, SP Odutola Omolola, said, “Preliminary investigation has commenced.”

    Ogun workers to receive N77,000 as minimum wage

    Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun has approved N77, 000 as the minimum wage for the lowest worker in the state, with the payment taking immediate effect.

    This is was disclosed in a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Lekan Adeniran, on Monday in Abeokuta.

    According to the statement, the decision was revealed after a meeting of the state government led by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr Tokunbo Talabi, and the leadership of the organised labour in the state.

    The organised labour at the meeting comprised of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and the Joint Negotiating Council (JNC).

    Talabi said that the meeting was at the instance of the governor, who he said had directed that no worker in the state should earn less than N77,000, starting from October.

    The SSG stated that the governor meant well for the people of the state and had proactively taken steps to further ameliorate the suffering of the people.

    He added that the governor had also advised the organised private sector to take a cue from the policy, as their workers were not exempted from the economic realities in the country.

    The SSG noted that the governor had therefore advised that the private sector should dialogue with their relevant stakeholders to arrive at a commensurate minimum wage for the sector.

    “The governor promised to set up a monitoring team to see how it is implemented by the private sector to ensure no one is short-changed,” he said.

    On his part, the state NLC Chairman,  Hameed Benco, said the organised labour in the state was pleased with the governor having approved the N77,000 in consultation with union leaders.

    Benco stated that the minimum wage remained the highest in the country today, adding that the other sectorial salaries would be affected accordingly.

    He also mentioned that government had graciously approved the submission of labour that the new basic salary should not be taxed.

    Unknown gunmen kill councillorship candidate in Ogun

    A councillorship candidate, Adeyinka Adeleke on Saturday was shot dead by yet-to-be-identified armed men in Ogun state.

    According to reports, Adeleke was shot at Jide Jones area of Abeokuta.

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) learnt that the victim was a candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for Abeokuta South Local Government Ward 15.

    The upcoming Local Government elections will take place on November 16th.

    Confirming the incident, SP Odutola Omolola, the spokesperson of Ogun State Police Command, said the assailants, who are suspected cultists stormed the scene in an unregistered Toyota Corolla Sport vehicle and armed with a pump action shotgun and a pistol.

    The Police spokesperson added the assailants opened fire on the victim and left him dead at the scene before taking to their heels.

    The deceased was said to have been a transport union worker in Panseke area of Abeokuta during his lifetime.

    32-year-old man found dead in hotel room

    The Police Command in Ogun has confirmed that one Lanre Ogungbe, 32, was discovered dead in a hotel room at Soyoye in Abeokuta.

    SP Omolola Odutola, the Command’s spokesperson, confirmed in a statement on Friday in Abeokuta the incident occurred at 2 p.m. on Thursday.

    Odutola explained that a bottle of one alcoholic drink called “Lakoko” and another bottle of pesticide known as “sniper” was found beside the deceased in the hotel room.

    She stated that on Thursday at 3 p.m. the owner of Authentic Hotel on Soyoye road reported the incident to the Divisional Police Officer of Lafenwa police station.

    “He (the hotel owner) explained that around 2 p.m. of that same day, his hotel’s manager raised an alarm at the hotel and informed him about a customer later identified as Lanre Ogungbe, who had come to the hotel for a short rest.

    “The receptionist, after noticing that the customer had not  been seen, went to check on him and discovered his lifeless body on the bed.

    “She immediately notified the manager, who then alerted the hotel owner.

    “They condoned off the scene, leaving the exhibits untouched before the complainant made a formal report of  the incident to the police,” Odutola said.

    She said police detectives reacted swiftly, and found the deceased on the bed, alongside an empty bottle of “Lakoko” and a bottle of “sniper”, suspected to have been consumed by him.

    “There were no signs of violence found on his body.

    “His remains was evacuated to General Hospital in Ijaiye for medical examination, where he was pronounced dead and his body deposited in the morgue for a post-mortem examination,” the spokesperson said.

    Odutola said thorough investigation was ongoing on the matter.

    FG begins sale of subsidised rice in Ogun

    The Federal Government on Thursday in Abeokuta began the sale of rice at a subsidised rate in Ogun.

    The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, while speaking during a ceremony to signify the commencement, said it was “one of the numerous programmes initiated to bring succour and relief to Nigerians”.

    Kyari, who was represented by Mrs Toyin Ayo-Ajayi, the ministry’s State Director, explained that the  distribution was being monitored by several Federal Government agencies to ensure transparency, fairness and adequate security.

    The Minister stated that government had put measures in place to ensure that  the rice got to the intended beneficiaries.

    He said all that was needed was an individual’s National Identification Number (NIN) and Automated Teller Machine  (ATM) card to buy a 50kg rice at N40,000.

    “However, I want to specifically applaud Gov. Dapo Abiodun for his commitment to the welfare of the citizens of the state.

    “Ogun is one of the first set of states in Nigeria to enjoy the benefit and this can be attributed to the governor’s tenacity and visionary leadership.

    “Ogun has one of the most organised templates ensuring that this gets to the three Senatorial districts of the state and to all at the grassroots,” he said.

    Kyari urged citizens of the state to support government to make sure that all the efforts by different levels of government were appreciated.

    In his address, Gov. Abiodun noted that President Bola Tinubu’s initiative testified to his commitment to ensuring he tackled the issue of food inflation and also improve the people’s livelihood.

    He expressed his appreciation of the President for his unwavering dedication to supporting the agricultural sector and ensuring food security for citizens.

    “This is especially in the light of the present economic realities facing the nation.

    “Government has shown responsiveness, thoughtfulness.

    “This is appreciated and welcomed, particularly following the removal of petroleum subsidy, as this will go a long way in cushioning the impact of the subsidy removal,” the governor said.

    Ogun House of Assembly passes consumer protection bill

    The Ogun State House of Assembly on Thursday in Abeokuta passed the Consumer Protection Bill, 2024 in a bid to address consumer extortion, disputes and other sharp practices.

    Mr Lukman Adeleye (PDP-Odogbolu) began the process of the bill’s passage when he presented the report of the Committee on Industry, Trade and Investments during the assembly’s plenary.

    The bill is titled “a bill for a law to establish the Ogun State Consumer Protection Agency, Provide for the Protection of the interest of Consumers, Settlement of Consumer Disputes and for Connected Purposes”.

    Adeleye, who is the House’s Minority Leader, thereafter moved the motion for the report’s adoption, with Babatunde Tella (APC-Abeokuta South) seconding it and other lawmakers supporting it through a voice vote.

    The bill was later read and adopted clause-by-clause before the Committee of the Whole House.

    It was after this a motion for its third reading was moved by the Majority Leader, Yusuf Sheriff (APC-Ado Odo/Ota 1), and seconded by Dickson Awolaja (PDP-Remo North).

    The Clerk of the House and Head of Legislative Services, Mr Sakiru Adebakin, took the third reading of the bill before the lawmakers.

    Responding, the House’s Speaker, Oludaisi Elemide (APC-Odeda), directed that the clean copy of the bill be transmitted to Gov. Dapo Abiodun for his assent.

    In another development, the Speaker announced the appointment of three new Deputy Clerks in consonance with the provisions of the House of Assembly Service Commission (Amendment) Law.

    According to Elemide, Deputy Clerk I, Mrs Funmilayo Adeyemi, will oversee Planning, Training and Legal Services.

    ”Deputy Clerk II, Mr Temitope Hokon, will be in charge of Legislative Services, Information and Public Service, while Deputy Clerk III, Mr Fatai Ayodeji, is to head Administration, Finance and Supplies,” he said.

    45-year-old man ends own life over hardship in Ogun

    Ayobami Oshoko, a 45-year-old man, has committed suicide over hardship in Ogun State.

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) gathered that the incident happened at Oshoko’s residence in the Mango, Oke-Ata area of Abeokuta around 6:00 am on September 30, 2024.

    Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, SP Omolola Odutola, stated that the victim ended his life after ingesting insecticide due to the hardship he was allegedly facing.

    The deceased’s sister, identified as Funmilayo, had reported the incident to Lafenwa Police Division after discovering her brother’s lifeless body in his room, with a bottle of insecticide found beside him.

    “A friend of the deceased visited his home and asked to see him. Upon entering the room, he discovered the victim’s body on the floor and raised the alarm after finding that the victim had ingested a mixture of insecticide and herbal concoction,” the PPRO stated.

    “He left a note written in Yoruba language, explaining the reasons behind his decision. In the note, he expressed frustration with his life and stated that he felt he had no choice but to end it. A discreet investigation is currently underway.”

    Man found dead, wife in hospital after inhaling generator fumes

    A resident of the Shogoye area of Owode-Egba in Ogun State, Nwachuku Ikechukwu, has lost his life after inhaling toxic fumes from a generator used indoors.

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) gathered that the couple had turned on the generator in their living room, which left the man dead, and his wife, Oyin Falodun hospitalized after inhaling its fumes.

    Narrating the ordeal, a concerned neighbor, Oladayo Olasubomi disclosed that he had gone to the house of the couple to deliver a daily contribution of N1000 when he found them unconscious.

    Olasubomi immediately raised the alarm, which prompted residents, including community Chairman Showunmi Sunday, to alert the Owode-Egba division of the state police command.

    However, upon arrival, police operatives confirmed there were no signs of foul play.

    Confirming the incident to journalists on Saturday, the spokesperson for the state police command, SP Omolola Odutola, said that Ikechukwu died while his wife, who was rushed to the hospital, later regained consciousness and explained what happened.

    The wife said, “That when it was 2200hrs of 19/09/2024 she asked her husband whether she could put off the generating engine they were using to power their fans in their bedroom but her husband told her not to do so until when the two of them slept off.

    “That the generator must have wreaked the havoc that befell them before it put itself off when the fuel inside it finished.”

    She added that she later discovered both of them had fallen out of bed, and that her late husband had struggled to get up before he fell.

    “While Falodun is recuperating at Ore Ofe Hospital, Owode-Egba, the corpse of Ikechukwu has been deposited at the General Hospital, Owode-Egba for autopsy,” Odutola added.

    18 passengers roasted In tragic ghastly motor accident in Ogun

    Eighteen passengers have been confirmed dead  in a tragic accident involving a Toyota Hiace bearing the registration number XA 690AKU.

    According to the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, the incident occurred in the Ogbere region of Ijebu East Local Government, situated along the Ijebu-Ode/Ore expressway

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG)  reports that the public relations officer of the state-owned traffic agency, Babatunde Akinbiyi in a statement noted that the victims suffered burns that rendered them unrecognizable, while one individual sustained injuries.

    He stated that the single-vehicle accident was triggered by a fire resulting from petroleum motor spirit stored in a jerry can within the vehicle.

    “According to eye witness account and this was corroborated by the driver, there was keg full Petroleum Motor Spirit inside the bus, it fell on it’s side when the vehicle got to failed portion of the road. The PMS poured on the floor of the bus and later dropped on exhaust pipe and caused the vehicle to catch fire on transit.

    ”The partially burnt and injured driver rescued to Rona Hospital in Ijebu Ode,while the dead deposited at State Hospital Mortuary, Ijebu Ode,” the statement read.
