    Ogun changes age limit to contest for LG election

    The Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC) has changed the age limit for candidates in the forthcoming local government elections in the state from 30 to 25 years.

    The commission’s Chairman, Babatunde Osibodu, in a statement on Friday in Abeokuta said this was the result of a review of the laws governing conduct of the state’s Local Government elections.

    He said this was to bring the guidelines in line with Sections 7 (4) & 106 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

    “It stipulates that a candidate is qualified for the local government election if he or she has attained the age of 25 years. Following this adjustment, OGSIEC has extended the deadline for each party’s primaries by one week,” Osibodu said.

    The statement indicates that the elections’ primaries, initially set to end on Monday, will now run until September 16.

    “The collection of personal data forms (CF 001 and CF 002) by each political party has also been extended to Sept. 20.

    “Political parties which have already conducted their primaries may collect the necessary forms for each of their candidates starting from Tuesday, with submissions accepted between September 16 and September 20.

    “Additionally, a  meeting with all political parties has been scheduled for Monday at the commission’s ceadquarters in Oke-Ilewo, Abeokuta,” the statement added.

    Elections into chairmanship and councilorship positions in local government areas in Ogun will hold on November 16.

    Ogun withdraws licences of 20 private orphanage homes

    The provisional licences of 20 private orphanage owners operating in Ogun State has recently been revoked due to non-compliance with laws prioritising the well-being and safety of vulnerable children in their care.

    Adijat Adeleye, the Ogun State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development disclosed this during a meeting with members of private orphanage homes, expressed displeasure over practices and activities of some private orphanage owners’ stating that the state would not tolerate shady practices involving illegal adoption, child trafficking or maltreatment of children in their custody.

    Adeleye while speaking stressed that orphanages should operate with empathy by empowering and caring for vulnerable children and not doing anything to compromise their safety.

    She further reiterated the current administration’s committement to safeguarding children’s welfare and preventing exploitation, urging them to adhere to guidelines that were laid down.

    The state government’s actions aim to protect vulnerable children and maintain the integrity of orphanage services,she said.

    “About 20 orphanages with provisional licences were affected, but not all of them were involved in various sharp practices like not following due guidelines on child adoption among other contraventions.”

    “But we have withdrawn the provisional licences of these 20 orphanages. We want to take our time to dig deeper and ensure that they are all doing the right things.”

    “We have told the affected orphanages to reapply after a month, and we have given additional guidelines to those with permanent licences to ensure that the standard is not compromised”.

    Adejumoke Adewole, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, has maintained that the ministry would not relent in embarking on unscheduled visitation to all orphanage homes in the state to monitor and evaluate the owners’ activities and ensure proper compliance with directives.

    A representative of the private orphanage owners, Adeyemo Anthony, commended the state for ensuring that orphanage homes were monitored, pledging their support to work together with the government to ensure the welfare and well-being of the children in their care.

    INEC mourns Ogun REC

    The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has expressed sadness over the death of its Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Ogun, Mr Olaniyi Ijalaye.

    Ijalaye passed away on Monday after attending the regular quarterly meeting of the commission inAbuja.

    The commission, in a statement issued by Mr Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, in Abuja on Tuesday, expressed its deepest condolences to the immediate family of the late Ijalaye. He prayed that God would grant the deceased eternal rest.

    Ijalaye, who hailed from Owo, Ondo State, was born in 1958. He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Law (LLB) from the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) in 1982 and was called to the Nigerian Bar (BL) in 1983. He also obtained a Master’s degree in Law (LLM) from the same university in 1995.

    Until his demise, Ijalaye, who assumed duty on Feb. 23, 2022, worked with integrity, diligence, and conscientiousness.

    NPFL: Beyond Limits FC may lose promotion ticket – Club Chairman, Soname

    The champions of the  Nigeria National League,  (NNL) Beyond Limits, may not participate in the Nigeria Premier Football League next season.

    This was made known by the club Chairman, Hon Kunle Soname.

    Both Beyond Limit and Remo stars are owned by one owner, Kunle Soname. And according to the rules guiding NPFL, no two clubs from the same parent body would be allowed to compete at the elite division.

    Addressing Journalists in Lagos, , Hon Kunle Soname made it known that the club will come out with a statement soon stating if they would participate in the NPFL or not.

    Soname said that the club’s management are still in talks to debate on the requirements and challenges of participating in the NPFL.

    “Football for us isn’t a social service, it’s a business,” he stated to the media.

    “The management of Beyond Limits are in talks to see if they can cope with the challenges of the NPFL vis-a-vis the financial and the physical commitment.

    “If they feel they can cope with it, they will play, but if otherwise, they will have to think of other ways of monetising their laurel.”

    It would be recalled that Beyond Limits, Nasarawa United, El-Kanemi Warriors and Ikorodu City gained promotion to the top-flight from the NNL last season.

    One dead, five others hospitalized as Cholera spread to Ogun state

    A 62-year-old woman in Ijebu-Igbo, Ijebu-North Local Government Area of Ogun State has given up the ghost after suffering from Cholera.

    It was gathered  that the deceased woman contracted cholera while caring for her infected child, who is now hospitalized.

    Findings show that the incident happened three days ago in the state.

    Dr. Tomi Coker, the Commissioner for Health in the state has confirmed the outbreak of Cholera.

    “A 62-year-old woman died and five persons were hospitalised. It happened in Ijebu-Igbo in the Ijebu-North local government area of the state.”He said

    The chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, in the state, Dr. Kunle Ashimi, in a press conference on Thursday, acknowledged the widespread impact of cholera, which, according to him, has affected 30 states across the country, including Ogun.

    He noted that cases would be treated free of charge at designated facilities and urged the populace to imbibe preventive measures against the spread of cholera.

    Ashimi said: “Such patients will be transported to and treated free at the facilities designated for the management of cholera cases across the state.

    “We use this opportunity to appeal to our people to imbibe preventive measures for the prevention of the spread of Cholera, including avoiding open defecation, avoiding indiscriminate refuse dumping, washing hands regularly, washing fruits and vegetables well before consuming and treating water before consuming it either by boiling or treating with chemical purifying agents.

    “We advocate that where there is no wherewithal to do this, two drops of plain household bleach in 1 litre of water is a good alternative. We also implore schools to monitor food, fruit and snack vendors around the schools to ensure that they practice proper hygiene. As well, schools should reintroduce hand washing stations like was done during the COVID-19 period.”

    Cholera outbreak: Ogun announces preventive measures in schools

    Ogun Government has directed school heads to ensure good health and safety of all learners and staff to prevent the spread of cholera within the school communities.

    Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, gave the directive in a statement issued in Abeokuta on Wednesday.

    Arigbabu noted that preventive measures had been put in place to control the spread of the disease in schools in the state.

    According to him, the measures take effect from Wednesday, as schools resume from the mid-term break and the Eid el-kabir holiday.

    He listed some of the measures to include comprehensive health talks on cholera prevention, information on symptoms, transmission routes, proper hand hygiene and safe drinking water practices.

    Other measures, he added, are to ensure availability of clean water and soap for hand washing in school premises, encourage regular hand washing, especially before eating and after using the restroom.”

    He also directed school heads to promote the use of hand sanitisers with at least 60 per cent alcohol content as support to hand washing.

    There should also be regular inspection and maintenance of water sources within school premises to ensure they are safe for drinking, the commissioner also directed.

    “Monitor closely the food vendors and ensure that they collect letters from health facilities, certifying their fitness for the job,” he added.

    He explained that there would be Designate Health Officers in schools to monitor learners and staff for any symptoms of cholera (like frequent watery stooling, vomiting, etc).

    He also directed school heads to report any suspected cases immediately to the nearest Health Care Centre and to the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology.

    “By adhering strictly to these preventive measures and maintaining high level of vigilance, we can collectively safeguard our health and wellbeing during this critical period,” he added.

    Ogun assembly passes Local Government Amendment Law

    The Ogun House of Assembly on Tuesday passed the state Local Government Amendment Law 2024.

    Mr Jemili Akingbade (APC-Imeko Afon), Chairman, House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, read the report of the committee at plenary in Abeokuta.

    Akingbade, thereafter, moved the motion for the adoption of the report and seconded by Dickson Awolaja (PDP-Remo North).

    The bill was later read and adopted clause-by-clause before the Committee of the Whole.

    The motion for the third reading of the bill was moved by the Majority Leader, Yusuf Sherif (APC-Ado Odo Ota 1), seconded by Adeniran Ademola (Sagamu 11).

    Consequently, the Deputy Clerk of the House, Mrs Funmilayo Adeyemi, took the third reading of the bill before the lawmakers.

    Mr Oludaisi Elemide (APC-Odeda), thereafter, directed that the clean copies of the bill be transmitted to Gov. Dapo Abiodun for his assent.

    The assembly had during second reading of the bill submitted that the amendment was aimed at creating a full-fledged Department of Audit Investigation and Control.

    They noted that the department would be carved out from the existing Department of Finance and Accounts in the Local Government Administration.

    The lawmakers added that it would ensure transparency, accountability and effective service delivery at the third tier of government.

    They stated that the amendment was poised to ensure improved value for scarce resources of government and ensured career progression.

    Ogun: 3 Indians rescued as police kill suspected kidnappers in gun duel

    The Police Command in Ogun said it has killed two suspected kidnappers terrorising travellers on the Sagamu-Ijebu Ode-Benin expressway in a gun duel.

    This is contained in a statement on Tuesday, in Abeokuta, by SP Omolola Odutola, the command’s spokesperson.

    Odutola said that the suspects were killed during a rescue operation carried out by personnel of the command to rescue some abducted Indian nationals.

    She disclosed that the police, during the operations and with the support of the local vigilantes were able to rescue the Indian nationals

    Odutola gave the names of the Indians as Tejaram Chauhan, Kaduwal Pradhan and Medani Kathiwada, adding that they were abducted on Friday.

    She also said that cash amounting to N7.9 million and 1,500 Indian Rupees suspected to have been part of the ransom collected by the kidnappers was recovered.

    Odutola explained that the Manager of Breeze Company Nigeria Limited located on the Ibadan-Lagos expressway had on Saturday made a distress call to the Divisional Police Officer, Mowe Divisional Headquarters.

    She said the distress call was to alert the DPO that a gang of kidnappers the previous day had opened fire on two  vehicles conveying his principals at Kajola junction, along Sagamu -Siun- Abeokuta expressway.

    According to her, the manager said that the police escort attached to the first vehicle marked FST 686 YH exchanged fire with the kidnappers and managed to escape with all the occupants in the vehicle.

    Odutola said, “Three Indian Nationals inside the second bus without police escort were all kidnapped to an unknown destination.

    “The anti-kidnapping section of the command in concert with police formations in the axis with other local security agents swung into action by combing the area.

    “The policemen engaged the kidnappers in a fierce gun battle in the forest along Benin-Sagamu Papalanto and succeeded in the rescue of the victims unhurt.

    “In the course of the encounter, two of the six kidnappers were demobilised. Two AK-47 rifles, one single barrel locally made gun, one sword, cell phone , criminal charms and 65 rounds of ammunition were recovered.

    “The two demobilised suspects have been deposited at the public mortuary, while intensive efforts are ongoing to arrest the four fleeing members of the gang.”

    The police command in Ogun on Monday confirmed the abduction of travellers at Ilisan/Iperu axis on the Sagamu-Benin expressway.

    SP Omolola Odutola, the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), who confirmed the incident to newsmen in Abeokuta , noted that the abduction happened on Friday.

    Odutola, however, explained that the police could not specifically say the number of people abducted, stressing that the hoodlums killed one of the travellers yet to be identified.

    The police spokesperson added that the incident which happened on Friday, May 3 at 6:55p.m was incidented as a case of armed robbery, murder and kidnapping.

    ”We have information that about seven people with A.K 47 suddenly blocked the Benin-Sagamu expressway.

    “The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ilisan got to the scene of the incident, saw two vehicles pierced with bullets and one other vehicle.

    “Lexus jeep 300 with registration number LND 640 DY, the driver’s name is Chilaka Lugard and another Lexus jeep 350 with registration number LSR 996 JF belonging to Kingsley Chineme.

    “Inside this Lexus 350 car was found a cross bag with N113,000, two iPhones, an iPhone 6 and iPhone 11 Promax.

    “There was also a corpse of an unidentified man, who was shot in the head .

    “The third vehicle was loaded with plantain and the driver, who was among those abducted but has regained freedom was later allowed to go with the vehicle.

    “The other Lexus vehicles have been taken to Ilisan police station,” she said.

    Odutola said the Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alamutu,  had in an emergency meeting summoned on Monday, directed the tactical commanders and the mobile squadron to go after the criminals.

    She said that the police commissioner had visited the scene of the incident, saying that he assured that the criminals would be apprehended soon.

    One dead, two injured as explosion rocks Ita -oshin community in Abeokuta

    Ita-Oshin community in Abeokuta the Ogun state capital was hit by gas explosion  killing one person, while two others were severely injured.

    The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Ogun Sector Command spokesperson, Mrs Florence Okpe, confirmed the incident to newsmen in Abeokuta on Saturday.

    According to her, the unfortunate incident occurred at 4:10 pm.

    The FRSC spokesperson explained that six people were involved in the incident, saying that one person who was the motor boy, died in the incident, while two people were injured and rushed to the hospital.

    “A total of five vehicles were involved, including two Nissan cars with registration numbers AAN 544 YC, LSD 993 CY, a Sino tanker marked T23771 LA, a Micra marked GDB 841 XR and a Honda CRV without registration number,” she said.

    She further explained that the tanker suffered brake failure before it lost control and crashed into the road barricade, then went up in flames.

    She added that some vehicles and shops around were burnt.

    “The fire service was contacted immediately and the scene was cordoned-off to avoid a secondary crash”, she added.
