ADC has no pact with any political party – National Chairman

African Democratic Congress (ADC) has dismissed the report that it has opted to work with another political party for the 2023 general elections because it no longer has candidates.

National Chairman of the party, Chief Ralph Nwosu, made this known at a news conference on Monday in Abeokuta.

He described the report as “false in its entirety”, saying that all the party’s candidates were still in the race.

According to him, the purveyors of the reports are only riding on the party’s temporary challenge to hoodwink members and lie to the public that ADC had joined them.

“We have been inundated with calls and reports from some quarters that ADC has opted to work with another political party in the state for the coming election and that the party no longer has candidates.

“This is false in its entirety and we use this medium to state that all our candidates remain as they are. We have no pact or working relationship with any political party.

“We are going to contest the general elections and fix Ogun back. No political party should ride on our temporary challenge to hoodwink our members or lie to the public that ADC has joined them.

“Let me state unequivocally that ADC is united, formidable and prepared to provide the credible alternative to the failing, clueless, inhumane administration in Ogun,” he said.

The national chairman expressed optimism that the party was coming back stronger and that it would win at the appellate court.

NAN reports that the Federal High Court in Abeokuta had repudiated the validity of ADC candidates after a motion filed by Labour Party over alleged non-compliance with Electoral Act in the conducts of its primaries.

“We respect the court’s decision and will not query the veracity of those judgments.

“However, it is the considered opinion of our legal representatives that the judgments were drenched in advertent inaccuracies, especially when interrogated with existential contexts, points of law and even recent precedence.

“Consequently, we have filed for redress at the Court of Appeal and we are confident that the orders of the lower courts shall be overturned and all our candidates will be revalidated,” he said.

Nwosu called on party faithful to keep hope alive and continue working assiduously for ADC’s victory at the forthcoming polls.

45-year old man allegedly beats wife to death

A 45-year-old carpenter, Segun Omotosho, who allegedly beat his wife, Olubukola to death, has been arrested by the Police in Ogun.

The Police Command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO), CSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, disclosed this in a statement issued in Abeokuta on Monday.

Oyeyemi said detectives arrested the suspect on Sunday in Akinseku Village, Abeokuta, where he had gone to hide after committing the alleged crime.

The police spokesperson stated that the deceased, an NCE holder, had established a private school registered in both in her name and that of her husband.

Oyeyemi alleged that the suspect, who had always wanted to take over the school from his deceased wife, physically assaulted her by hitting her with a padlock on her head after a disagreement.

According to the PPRO, the wife sustained serious injury and was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre in Abeokuta, where she died.

” She, however, left behind a voice note for her family relating what transpired.

” The arrest of the suspect followed a complaint lodged at Kemta divisional headquarters on Nov.  14, by the deceased elder sister, who reported that the deceased was beaten and seriously injured by her husband over a minor disagreement.

“Unknown to the husband, the deceased had sent a voice note to her family members, informing them that her husband has used a padlock to hit her on the head while beating her.

“And that if she died, they should be aware that it was her husband who killed her.

“Acting on the report and the recorded evidence, the Divisional Police Officer, Kemta, CSP Adeniyi Adekunle, detailed detectives to go after the killer husband and fish him out from wherever he might be.

“He was subsequently traced to Akinseku village, Abeokuta where he has been hibernating, and was promptly apprehended.

“As soon as the voice note was played to his hearing, the husband took to his heels, having realised that his evil deed had been exposed,” he said.

Meanwhile, the State Commissioner of Police, Lanre Bankole, has directed that the suspect be transferred to Homicide Section of the Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation and diligent prosecution.

Brain drain: We’re losing doctors daily – NMA

Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Ogun chapter, on Monday, called on the state government to declare a state of emergency on the health sector to address the issue of brain drain among medical doctors.

NMA Chairman in the state, Dr. Adekunle Ashimi, made the call at a news conference to flag off the 2022 Physicians’ Week, with the theme: “Nigeria’s Healthcare Delivery System and the 2023 Democratic Transition: A Time to Change the Narrative.”

Ashimi expressed regret at the rate at which brain drain had hit the country’s health sector, saying that no fewer than 10,296 doctors who obtained their degrees in Nigeria were currently practising in the United Kingdom.

According to him, Nigeria has the third highest number of foreign doctors working in U.K., after Pakistan and India.

This, he said, had made the country lose its human resources in geometric progression.

According to him, until government declares a state of emergency in the health sector, the trend may continue to linger.

“We call on our government to urgently declare emergency action in Nigeria’s health sector for the sake of the citizens.

“As the situation gets worse, doctors, who stayed behind, are seriously overworked, as bureaucracy has made it difficult for heads of public hospitals to replace the doctors who had left.

“Therefore, those who are working now begin to see reasons to join the train and leave the country.

“The situation our health care is facing now means one doctor to 15,000 patients, which may be worse if the situation is not addressed,” he said.

Ashimi also appealed to government to review the Consolidated Medical Salary Scheme, saying that there was the need for commensurate hazard allowance for health workers.

He noted that the review of CONMESS had been due since 2014, based on the 2009 collective bargaining agreement signed by the government to review it after five years.

He also urged the state government to start paying the revised hazard allowance without delay, as few states had been paying it ahead of the Federal Government.

The week-long programme will feature a scientific conference, community outreach and a symposium.
